Office Buildings in Finland

This book aspires to create a wide perspective on the various trends in current Finnish office architecture from the classic and traditional brick buildings to imaginative glazed towers and glass facades of today. The book presents 14 contemporary Finnish office buildings – a selection of the very best of Finnish office architecture from the present century. The buildings in this book have been selected by Reijo Jallinoja, professor of architecture. The nature of the book is markedly “professional”. In a way it is a handbook of office building design in which the buildings are presented over several pages with their floor plans and technical details giving the reader a thorough idea of each building and the planning background, as well as learning

about how to design the Finnish way. The examples in the book show that Finnish office architecture can represent both cutting-edge high-technology and humane and caring architecture.

Wood Architecture in Finland

PHOTOGRAPHEd By JUSSI TIAINEN

This book presents Finnish wooden architecture from recent years, superbly photographed by Jussi Tiainen. The book features ten intriguing wooden buildings, each an essential part of our everyday life: offices, houses, schools and training centres, leisure centres and churches. The buildings are of different sizes, designed in different styles and built with different methods – from the small and intimate St. Henry’s Ecumenical Art Chapel, with its fish-like form, and the Kärsämäki Church, a modern building built using traditional 18th century building methods, to the Finnforest Modular Office, a prefabricated and modular frame building as well as Europe’s tallest wooden

office building. This diverse selection of buildings has one common feature – they are all built with the most sustainable and ecological of building materials: wood.

Alvar Aalto Summer HomesErkki Helamaa and Jari Jetsonen

This book presents small, intimate and personal summer houses and saunas designed by Aalto – early works as well as later ones that have been published only rarely. Included are two summer homes that Aalto designed and built for himself: Villa Flora (designed together with Aino Aalto), from Aalto’s early production, and the world-famous Experimental House in Muuratsalo. The summer homes featured in the book were designed by Aalto for his relatives, close friends or clients for whom he already designed larger commissions. Villa Vekara, the Korpikoto Hunting Lodge, Villa Kihlman, the Enso-Gutzeit Country Club and Sauna, Villa Eino Manner and Villa Oksala were all individually designed and took into account the wishes of the client.

Wooden Urban Villages

EXAmPLES OF mOdERN WOOdEN TOWNS

This book tells the success story of Finnish wood construction and throws new light on the direction of housing construction in Finland today, where more than a decade of development and construction of modern wooden towns and compact, low-rise housing has created a wealth of knowledge and a diverse variety of pioneering and resident-oriented wooden residential milieux.

Modern wooden town construction is investigated from three key perspectives: past and present studies, experiences and newly completed building projects. The book’s expert commentary and presentations of completed wooden housing areas showcase the best of

Finnish expertise in wood construction and highlight the myriad possibilities of building in wood. Finnish and English texts.

SPIRIT OF NATURE WOOd ARCHITECTURE AWARd 2006

“There is a special feel to living in a room of solid joined beams, a room not simply clad in wood but made of wood through and through”, says Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, the fourth recipient of the international Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award. He explains in his interesting article “The Body of Wood” his ideas of designing and constructing traditional log cabins. This book presents three projects by him: Haus Luzi, realized in 00, and Haus Annalisa and Pension Briol which are still plans. These are featured with beautiful water colour sketches and models and plans, which give a good idea of the designing process.

Small Houses in Finland Esa Piironen (ed.)

The book presents a selection of the best single-family houses in Finland from the last twenty-five years. Each of the 9 houses presented shows a different approach to the design of a small house, from the site placement to the plan layout, facades, massing, and use of materials, all the way to the handling of the construction details. All the houses were individually designed for single families, and are situated in different environments, from the countryside to the city and from the seashore inland. The houses in this book have been selected by architect Esa Piironen, who himself has designed a number of small houses. Characteristic of his approach has been a commitment to environmentally friendly and humane architecture.

Archipelago

ESSAyS ON ARCHITECTURE

Edited by Peter MacKeith

Twenty-three essays and poems from a range of architects, curators, academics, historians, philosophers and students, from friends near and far, represent the breadth and diversity of Juhani Pallasmaa’s friendships and his presence in the dynamic of architectural culture. However, a parallel intention of Archipelago is to open further doors and windows into architecture’s past, present and future. Each of the essays can be read as singular efforts in research or meditation. Archipelago is a gift given twice over: once to an inspiring Finnish architect and scholar Juhani Pallasmaa for his 0th birthday, and a second time to the ongoing discussions of architecture.

The Architecture of Image

EXISTENTIAL SPACE IN CINEmA

Juhani Pallasmaa

This book explores the shared experiential ground of cinema, art and architecture. Pallasmaa carefully examines how the classic directors Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Michelangelo Antonioni and Andrei Tarkovsky use architectural imagery in creating emotional states in their films. The author also explores the startling similarities between the landscapes of painting and the landscapes of film. Pallasmaa suggests that the architectural imagery of poets, painters and film directors could re-sensitise architects to the inherent poetics of architecture.

Encounters Architectural EssaysJuhani PallasmaaEdited by Peter MacKeith

Architect Juhani Pallasmaa´s Encounters binds together a highly selective collection of essays, lectures, and articles in an edited, thematically comprehensive format. Several essays, previously given as lectures, are published here for the first time. Important essays, with previously limited availability –”The Geometry of Feeling,” and “Hapticity and Time,” for example – are included, as are lesser known articles addressing specific architectural works, the figures of Aulis Blomstedt and Alvar Aalto, and the consequences of a contemporary culture obsessed with materialism and consumption. An equally careful selection of images accompanies the essays.

We invited 40 young and promising architects to send us material: photographs and drawings of both built and unbuilt projects, such as office buildings, hotels, libraries, housing, summer houses, commercial buildings, and interior design. This rich and varied material makes up a totality which vividly shows the direction of contemporary Finnish architecture into the future.
