Michelin has won Rally Italia Sardegna
seven times as a WRC qualifying round
In 2012, Sébastien Ogier posted a fastest stage time
in a Skoda Fabia S2000/Michelin
Jacques Morelli, Manager of Michelin Motorsport’s WRC
programme
“Rally Italia Sardegna is one of the toughest rounds of the
season. Running order can be very important and Sébastien
Ogier faced a big handicap being first on the road in 2016.
Tyre choice, and choosing how many spares to carry, can be
decisive but it’s a highly complex process given the expected
heat and the abrasiveness of certain stages. Although it is
only short (14.14km), Tergu-Osilo could be the hardest-
wearing stage of the entire championship!”
Rally Italia
SardegnaRallye Italia Sardegna succeeded from the Sanremo as Italy’s WRC qualifier in 2004
The former Costa Smeralda, the forerunner of today’s Rally Italia Sardegna,
was a classic European Championship round in the 1980s and 1990s
Loeb is the most successful driver in Sardinia (four wins), followed by Ogier (three)
In 2012, Ott Tanak scored his first WRC podium in a Ford Fiesta RS WRC/Michelin
It was in Sardinia in 2011 that Mini made its WRC debut
Juho Hanninen (Skoda/Michelin) won the 2010 event which counted towards the former IRC
Dani Sordo and Kris Meeke were Junior podium finishers in 2005 (Citroën C2/Michelin)
MISCELLANEOUS
Cycling’s Giro d’Italia visited Alghero, Sassari and Olbia in Sardinia in 2017
TEAMS / DRIVERS
Andreas Mikkelsen is standing in for Stéphane Lefebvre in the N°9 Citroën C3 WRC/Michelin
FORMATBased in Alghero since 2014
The rally revisits Olbia for first time since 2013 for an overnight halt
and a Tyre Fitting Zone
Mickey Jump on Monte-Lerno stage is a classic WRC spot
Terranova (SS2/6, 14.54km) and Monte Olia (SS3/7, 19.05km)
are back on the menu
96.34 competitive kilometres are new
Chief characteristics
The selective, narrow and twisty stages and hot weather make big demands on tyres.
The hard-packed, stony ground is covered with a top-coating of fine sand which the first cars
on the road sweep clear. Stones eventually become exposed and some stages can get badly
cut up and hard-wearing for tyres. Since the loss of Greece’s Acropolis Rally,
Rally Italia Sardegna has emerged as the WRC calendar’s roughest fixture.
