Description of the tripmeter

Purpose: Tripmeter series Rally Computer 3 is a professional device for use in flat, off-road and navigation car rallies. Flexibility in the use of measurement blocks enables selection and adjustment of the measured parameters to the specifics of the given rally. Aluminium, water-tight casing provides protection against external factors. Top-class electronics ensures reliability and high precision measurements. The measurement results are presented on super-bright red LED displays. The tripmeter is operated by 3-key keypad, with each key permanently attributed to the most important measuring functions.

Tripmeter should be installed in a conspicuous place allowing unimpeded access to the front panel. Installation of the tripmeter can be facilitated by supports screwed onto to the sides of the casing. Do not install the tripmeter in places exposing it to damage or obstructing its proper functioning. When connecting to power supply, ensure that the connection to the voltage source is reliable and stable (within the range from 8 to 30 V). ATTENTION. Disconnecting the tripmeter does not cut it off completely from the power supply. The tripmeter continues to consume power (reduced to minimum). When tripmeter is not used for extended periods it is advisable to disconnect it from car installation. This will prevent the battery discharge. It is best to install an external switch, which totally disconnects the power supply.

User’s Guide Introduction. Rally computer 3 tripmeter can operate in two measurement modes. The modes are selected from the position of the start screen with the [F1] key. DIST mode also switches on automatically after turning on the tripmeter’s power supply. This is conditioned on turning off the power supply from the position of the start menu. More on mode switching in the chapter: MEASUREMENTS.

The main parameter is the key difference between measurement modes.

DIST – when you need to measure and quickly delete the TRIP short route and have access to other parameters.

STAGE – when you need to measure STOPWATCH section time and have access to other parameters.

When you need to measure and speedily delete the TRIP short

route

The measurement in this mode can be selected

from the start screen by pressing respectively the [F1] key followed by [OK] – the screen will display

Turning on/off. After switching on the power supply, the tripmeter: – in case when it had been turned off while no measurements were made or had been turned on for the first time – starts working in the DIST mode – in case when it was turned off while making measurements - continues measurements made before the power supply was switched off Turning off the tripmeter is possible only from the position of the start screen by a prolonged (12 sec.) continued pressing of the [F1] key. The tripmeter, while being turned off - after 7 sec. - shows the serial number and the programme version before it turns itself off.

From the position of the start screen, in case when the yellow conductor designed to connect to the ignition shows no voltage, the tripmeter turns itself off automatically after 1 min. In case when the functionality of turning off the tripmeter from the start screen - while the ignition is switched off - is not required, the yellow conductor, together with the red conductor, can be connected do DC supply.

Preparation for work Tripmeter configuration

Entry to configuration menu is possible:

after restart of the tripmeter from the keypad, or

after switching on the power supply when the tripmeter was in the start screen position. In both cases we will see:

We move through the menu by pressing the [F1] key, we select the desired function by pressing OK. The change of value is done by pressing the [F1] key and we confirm by pressing [OK]. The change of a parameter is confirmed by the display blink. We exit each menu branch by using [CLR]. From the menu to the normal work

After restart from the keypad or upon switching on the power supply (when the tripmeter, before being turned off, was in the start screen position) the display will show the digits 88888 and then the currently chosen k constant.

At that time [F1] should be pressed three

times and [OK] one time. Following which the display will show: Conf.

To execute a reset, the tripmeter has to be put in a start screen position (from any work position, by a prolonged pressing of the [CLR] key) and then the following keys should be pressed in the corresponding order:

[CLR] and hold it

3. pulses – The display shows IMPS – selection of the work mode – with trip pulses and GPS or only with GPS a) I-off – work using only GPS system – measurement is made only from 5 km/h. b) I-on – work using route pulses obtained from the vehicle or from an additional sensor and the GPS system – this measurement ensures the greatest accuracy.

Vehicle’s k constant

Vehicle’s „k” constant is the number of pulses generated by vehicle covering the control distance. In our tripmeter the recorded value must correspond to the distance of 1000 m.

While measuring at the distance of 1000 m, the measured value can be directly recorded in the tripmeter memory.

In case when the sample distance is of a different length, the value should be accordingly adjusted:

length of the measurement distance in meters

The number of pulses measured along the distance x A = number of pulses per 1000 m

While measuring the number of pulses per one turn of the wheel we have to use the following formula:

Units – the display shows UNIT – selection of units for route measurement– km or mile: meter – metric system imp - imperial or British system

Page 9: Rally computer 3 Rally computer 3.GPS* · Rally computer 3 – User’s Guide SPARKELECTRONICS Robert Skierski, Office: 01-424 Warszawa, Al. Prymasa Tysiąclecia 78a, tel / fax :

tire circumference in meters

the number of pulses measured per one circumference x A = the number of pulses per 1000 m

The „k” constant can be measured by the tripmeter or we can enter a known value. Up to ten various “k” constants, measured e.g. for various tire sizes, can be entered into the Rally computer 3 tripmeter memory, and during a rally we can simply chose the desired one. Particular „k” values are recorded under numbers 0 to 9. The value of k constant indicating the passage of one kilometre is not limited. For a rectangular pulse of the amplitude of 5V and the k constant =400 000 p/km, the tripmeter operates correctly up to the velocity of 180 km/h. K constant of the value exceeding 99999 p/km is displayed with lit dots between each digit. The entered or measured value of k constant should be activated by choosing it !!!

K constant – measurement

While the tripmeter is in the starting position press concurrently [OK] and [F1] keys.

Key [F1] deletes measurement and immediately starts the next count, therefore while starting the proper measurement one should press the [F1] key. [OK] key stops the measurement, and by pressing [OK] once more we select the window with the possibility of entering k constant for recording the measured value.

The window displays value 0. Measurement starts automatically so as to check whether the pulses are counted (underneath one can see that 88 pulses were counted).

Using the [F1] key we enter the digit from 0

to 9 and confirm with [OK]. The tripmeter

blinks to indicate that the entry was made and exits to the start screen.

Auto-calibration using inbuilt GPS module.

Only for Rally computer 3.GPS. The functions of auto-calibration are activated from the position k constant - measurement. After entering the measurement of k constant the second pressing of [F1] (3 seconds) causes activation of auto-calibration. This mode is indicated by blinking of the TRIP diode. The conditions of measurement:

With an insufficient number of satellites all the displays show minuses.

With at least seven satellites but the velocity below 20 km/h, the display shows blinking 0.

With both conditions met the display does not blink and k constant is counted. After travelling the distance of 1000 meters (as measured by the GPS without having to refer to the measured road section) the counting of pulses stops. Prolonged pressing of [OK] key starts the option of selecting the k constant, on which basis the measurements are recorded in the tripmeter memory.

k constant – recording

Selection of k constant

From the tripmeter’s starting position press [F1] and hold it. For the duration of three seconds the display shows the mode option which disappear after three seconds. Then, still holding the [F1] key with subsequent pressing of [CLR] we review the programmed values of constants. The displays show the numbers of consecutive coefficients, and after a temporary standstill of the keys, the number of the constant changes into its value. The choice is made by releasing the [F1] key when the displays show the desired value.

From the tripmeter’s starting position press

[OK] and [CLR] keys. The display shows

_ sign. With the help of upward pointing arrow enter the first digit of the k constant and then press [OK] to accept the given digit

and move it leftwards. An underscore appears – which means that the second digit should be entered. After entering all the digits keep pressing [OK] (disregarding the underscore

appearing in the last place, it will not be taken into account). The value will blink and then the underscore will appear in waiting for entering k constant, according to which we want to record the measured value. Using [F1] key select the digit from 0 to 9

and confirm it with [OK]. Displays will blink

thus confirming that the value was entered and the tripmeter will resume the starting position.

In case of selecting k constant with the value equal 0 or in case of not making any choice, the tripmeter will display an error in the form of following digits: 21747.

Measurements. Selection of the work modes.

Activation of TIMER time count.

On the start screen press the [F1] key.

The screen shows the mode name. Consecutive pressing of [F1] key changes

the available modes. The choice is

accepted by pressing [OK].

After selecting the mode, the display shows _ (underscore)and at this point the TIMER time can be enter. In case this option is not required press [OK]. When wanting to enter it using the arrow key, increase the value of the first digit, [OK] key moves the entered digit to the left, the next digit is entered, and so till the end, until all values are entered. [CLR] can delete what was entered in error, prolonged pressing of [CLR] results In exit to the screen. Attention! The maximum time that can be entered amounts to 9h59m59sek. which on display shows as: 95959. After entering all the digits press and hold [OK]. At this point the tripmeter is ready for measurements.
