he Ralston Area Chamber of Commerce is redefining the Chamber experience! We invite you to explore the many op-

portunities for you, your business and your employees to join us and get engaged! From talent development to networking, economic development to public policy, the Ralston Area Cham-ber is leading the way.

The Ralston Area Chamber of Com-merce and its 300 local business mem-bers welcome you! This publication is designed to be a guide to the Cham-ber’s services, the membership of the Chamber and the Ralston community. Learn more about the organization, our services and products. We offer business development and advocacy resources to businesses of all types.

With the large number and diversity of our programs, we are able to offer something for literally all types of businesses.

The favorable responses we receive indicate these programs are being welcomed by our members, while our traditional programs, such as the Business Exchange Network, Annual Awards Banquet and Auction and Independence Day Parade continue to grow in popularity and attendance.

Our Chamber’s success would not be possible with-out the cooperation and assistance of our dedicated Chamber Board of Directors and great city officials. We extend sincere thanks to Mayor Don Groesser and his fine staff and department heads, and to our dedicated city council.

The generosity of our schools, community clubs and business people — all of whom offer hours and hours of volunteer time and sponsorship — add to the ongoing success of your Chamber.

It’s a community effort that brings us together and adds growth and vitality to the Ralston area. We offer thanks and appreciation to each of our members and associates.

Sincerely,The Ralston Area Chamber of Commercewww.ralstonareachamber.org 402-339-7737

Welcome

To good neighbors, old and new: We are delight-ed to have you as a vital part of our community.

Speaking as Mayor of Ralston and on behalf of our city government, we recognize that our citizens are our most important asset. We continue to provide an environment that enriches our community and its residents.

Although an island surrounded by much larger cities, we continue as a small town with a “Spirit of Independence.”

As you drive by 72nd and Q Streets, you may notice our amazing new arena complex that hosts the Omaha Lancers, Omaha Beef and UNO Men’s Basketball. The arena holds 3,500 to 4,000 people for various types of family events. We have two sheets of ice that provide entertainment for all ages, and the lobby can be used for weddings, din-ners and special gatherings. Behind the arena is a new 270-unit apartment complex.

The enthusiasm within Ralston grows with the addition of the newcomers. We bid you all a warm “Spirit of Independence” welcome.

Sincerely,Donald A. GroesserMayor, City of Ralston

Since then, things have really begun to bloom for the city.

Since it opened, the arena has played host to sporting events, concerts, trade shows, graduations and more.

Arena General Manager Paul Hendrick-son and his staff are working hard to bring more and better events to the venue.

They have brought in wedding recep-tions, breakfast and lunch meetings and other types of events.

Side developmentsThanks in large part to the new Ralston Arena, there is a new energy in the city. A Holiday Inn Express is under construction to the south of the arena, with a

completion date in mid-2014.Menard’s opened a new home improvement store a few hundred yards from the

amount of home tenants we have,” Hen-drickson said, pointing to teams such as the Omaha Lancers and the Rollergirls.

The arena just signed a long-term con-tract with a craft show operation that will hold two shows a year at the arena.

The Ralston Area Chamber of Com-merce also hosts its networking event, Schmooz-A-Palooza, at the arena.

See Page 8 for more about Schmooz-A-Palooza.

With these new and varied events come more visitors to Ralston.

According to Groesser, the city is es-timating that 650,000 unique visitors will visit the arena each year.

That’s something the city can take bet-ter advantage of, and in some cases it al-ready is.

A new hotel is going up just south of the arena. The Holiday Inn Express is ex-pected to be ready for guests by mid-2014.

Part of the mayor’s vision for Ralston is to make it a destination, similar to the Old Market or Midtown Crossing.

Groesser said he would love to see more of those arena visitors stay a little

longer in Ralston and visit the city’s downtown dis-trict.

The new Menards home improvement store is evi-dence of more excitement near the arena site.

Besides the Menards there are new retail stores and restaurants that have opened or are planned for the area, Groesser said.

Hendrickson pointed out that the arena is work-ing on building more relationships with downtown Ralston businesses.

“More businesses are tagging into what we are doing here,” said Hendrickson. “It benefits every-body.”

Here’s Ralston! The arena has played host to numerous, varied events, including an indoor football league, college basketball and hockey, roller derby, hockey tournaments, graduations, trade shows and the Schmooz-A-Palooza.

Concerts have included such stars as Wynonna Judd, Kenny G and Rodney Atkins.

Why ever leave Ralston?Ralston is working on creating a new master plan. According to the mayor, the last time this happened was in 1994.Along with his vision of Ralston as a destination spot, the mayor is asking for

input on what the Ralston of the future will look like. The goal is to have the finalized plan complete by December 2013 and adopted

by the city council by January or February of 2014.For more information about the comprehensive plan, visit www.cityofralston.com.

What’s the big deal?New retailers coming into the area might help the city

keep up with bond payments on the arena.A state law allows Ralston to collect up to 70

percent of the sales tax revenue generated at new businesses opening within 600 yards of an arena. From earlier reports, projections show that Ralston

would need about $50 million in retail sales each year to keep current

with bond payments. The average Menards store does about $40 million in

sales annually.
