Mrs. Lowry & Son

Dir: Adrian NobleStarring: Vanessa Redgrave, Timothy Spall, Stephen LordThis is the beautiful, delicate, intimate and amusing story of thebrittle but vital relationship between L. S. Lowry-one of thegreatest artists of the 20thcentury-and his bedridden, unhappyand controlling mother. Engrossing and entertaining, Mrs Lowry &Son offers up a veritable masterclass in acting, with VanessaRedgrave and Timothy Spall spellbinding as a mother and sonseparated by art and ambition. Lowry (Spall), not yet establishedas an artist, works as a rent collector, walking the streets ofSalford, mixing with factory workers and observing the townclosely. In the evenings, he takes art classes and paints until theearly hours of the morning. He is resolutely loyal and well-mannered towards his bitter mother, Elizabeth (Redgrave), whotries to dissuade her bachelor son from pursuing his artisticambitions and never misses a chance to tell him what adisappointment he is to her. Adrian Noble's wonderfully observedfilm gently reveals how Lowry's snobbish mother is the obstaclepreventing him from fulfilling his artistic ambition, as hedesperately tries to create something that might make her happy. This lovely film is punctuated by delightful moments of humour, asit depicts the impact a bitterly obsessive mother had on one ofthis country's greatest artists.

Judy

Director: Rupert GooldCast: Renée Zellweger, Bella Ramsey, JessieBuckley1968: Having fallen on hard times, and desperateto re-establish herself, Judy Garland (anastounding Renée Zellweger) is left with no otherchoice than to accept a residency in London toperform a five-week, sold-out series of concerts.Separated from her children, who are back in LosAngeles where her ex-husband is fighting her forcustody, and heavily dependent on drugs andalcohol, she battles loneliness. She reflects onher life, specifically her childhood, which wasirreparably damaged by studio chief Louis BMayer. Yet every night she still manages to dustherself off, welcome her fans and become “JudyGarland”, the star they all know and love.

This play was first presented by The CuriousEnsemble in The Viking Theatre in September2019. It played to full houses for two weeks andwas a popular and critical success. It will tournationally in Spring 2020.

Writer Maura Laverty’s life is a fascinating tale oftalent and tenacity; she is brought back to life inthis charming play full of detail, wit and tragedy. The play mimics the form of the old biographicalBBC TV show hosted by Eamonn Andrews calledThis Is Your Life. In this case, a forgotten celebrityis dug up and taken through her life story in front ofa live audience (us) with plenty of internetcommentary and Twitter interaction. This televisuallight-entertainment shape is an ingenious solutionto covering the biography of someone about whomlittle is know. Writers Bairbre Ní Chaoimh andYvonne Quinn knit much psychological subtlety intothis schematic shape…
