    RAMSEUR, COLERIDGE, FRANKLINVILLE

Recently, the town of Ramseur submitted official forms to theNorth Carolina Rural Center to get involved in the NorthCarolina Small Town Economic Prosperity (NCSTEP)demonstration program. This initiatives goal is to helpsmaller communities target their crucial needs an develop a

course of action for improving things. According toncruralcenter.org, NCSTEP wants to:

    1. Support small town revitalization as a critical element ofNorth Carolinas public policy agenda.

    2. Prepare small town leaders to more effectively plan andimplement local economic initiatives.

    3. Promote a climate within small towns that encouragescitizen involvement, open dialogue and innovation.

    4. Stimulate job-creating investments in small towns by bothlocal and external sources.5. Encourage small towns to think beyond their town limitsand actively build connections with regional economicinitiatives and a wide range of economic partners.

According to Town Administrator Kevin Franklin; if Ramseur isselected, the town would receive $25,000 in grants up front topay for workshops, training sessions, and the development ofan economic plan of action for the town. The back end of the

2 year program could possibly bring up to $100,000 in grantmoney to implement these plans. These studies would helppinpoint parts of town that are available for businesses touse, highlight types of businesses that would most likelysucceed in these areas, and name methods in which thetown could bring successful businesses to these vacantbuildings and/or lots. Franklin and other town leaders hope tofind out whether we qualify for the NCSTEP sometime inApril. For more on NCSTEP go to ncruralcenter.org

The weather manin the winter used

to be a symbol ofweekday freedom for students aching forsome time out of school, and the tidings ofice and snowfall were fun for a while.Unfortunately, now everyone is slowlyrealizing that we can have too much of agood thing. Not only are spring breaks in jeopardy, but many of the areas localbusiness owners are feeling, pardon thepun, left out in the cold.

I am down at least 60 or 65%, ifnot more lamented one restaurant-runninglocal, it was bad enough before, but allthis snow keeps most of our normalcustomers at home. Even after the stormsubsides, many businesses who rely onthe senior populations patronage dontsee them return until the snow melts away.To many, it feels like a tag-team attack on

their livelihoods. Its no secret that the localeconomy is a challenge in itself. The shaky

situation nationally, combined the jobs thathave left Ramseur in recent times. One

flake and I might as well stay home, another entrepreneur commented, I washaving a good nap before you came in!

On the other hand, a few industriesdo well in these situations. The grocerystore looked like a war zone soon after the

word got around about the weather.Johnny Luck of Lucks TV said his

business walks the weather tightrope.Cold and rainy weather is good for me,because everyone wants to stay in andwatch TV. But if they cant get out of theirhouse to come see me, that doesnt do meany good either! With more days lookinglike a frigid ghost town, we can all lookforward to the warmth and energy thatspring will bring in the coming months. Ifwe can just make it to April, well be alright.another shop owner predicted, until thenwe gotta wrap up and hunker down.

    For over 38 years, the

Eastern Randolph Cabinet Shop hasmanufactured custom cabinets fromhigh atop the hill in Franklinville. Twoyears ago, owner Danny Burgessbegan a new phase of his career inthe form of a line of custom, old-fashioned desks called Tables ofTime. I was able to talk to Mr.Burgess for a few moments in hishillside shop about what this linewas and what it meant to him. Itstarted after I made some custompieces for a customer and wanted itspecially engraved. I also decidedthat I needed a desk that I could just sit down and write a leader tosomeone or read at. His Tables of Time line arent made to housekeyboards, mice, and CPUs; but are meant as a simple unit madefor storage and penning snail mail as if it was before the internettook over communication. I love technology Burgess laughed, but

thats not the point of this line. The point, as a found out, mainly is to

remind the owner of certain timeless truths communicated in each ofthe lines four different scriptures. (Joshua 24:15, Revelation 22:13,Romans 5:8, and the ever popular John 3:16)

The line of desks is specifically registered and recorded forhistorys sake and could serve as a special family heirloom, passedfrom one generation to the next. The line consists of 4 styles of desk, two made from cherry wood and two from maple that are paintedover by hand and given an antique look to them. They also come infour finishes: Antique Cherry, Smokey Mountain Blue, AutumnBrown, and Cinnamon. We make all of these from scratch, from theground up. Danny told me, they are all solid wood through andthrough. (meaning there is no particle board to be found) Burgesswill spend anywhere between 8 to 12 hours on each desk. He hopesto start offering custom designs with custom verses or names verysoon, and also may begin crafting hope chests by the end of theyear. You can find out more about the Tables of Time line atwww.tablesoftime.com or by calling 336-824-5540.

Amidst the talks of revitalizingdowntown Ramseur, the NAPA Autoparts store currently located at 1521Main Street recently announced that it

would be moving locations. We areaiming for the move to officially beginMarch 17th, said store manager BradHill. We will be fully closed forbusiness on the 20th and hope to bedone moving and 100% ready forcustomers by the end of the month -March 31st. This decision seems totow a tough line, with many locals

wanting to restore Main Streets formerglory. I think its no secret that it wontbe good for downtown Hill lamented, but we are also in tough economictimes and we have to think about ourbottom line. I would love to see

downtown come back to life, but wehave to do something here.

Since they purchased the storetwo and a half years ago, owners Craigand Mitch Breedlove have felt it best torelocate the store to a higher traffickedpart of town, but the opportunity wasntavailable until recently. The newlocation, 137 King Road, is just behindthe Silver Dollar pawn shop in whatused to be Dollar General. (and highlyvisible to the constant traffic onHighway 64) Not only will it be goodfor us, but I think it will be good for thepawn shop, furniture showroom, and allthe other businesses in that area. Hillpredicted as he helped some localpatrons downtown. Its not going to befun moved all these rooms full ofinventory, but it will be worth it once weare settled.

The store will also benefit from alot more parking space in their newlocation compared to the few streetside spots they have access to on MainStreet. We have to do this beforesome other parts store comes to townand puts us under. So in review: more

exposure to passing traffic, busierbusiness neighbors, and more parking- a combination no sensible businessowner would pass up on.

So as we see yet another stapleof downtown leave Main Street andwhispers of more of the same to come(via the rumor mill), one cant help butthink if its possible to stimulate newbusiness in such a forgotten about sideof town? With a struggling andunpredictable economy, businesses willcontinue to do whatever is necessaryto keep their doors open and food ontheir family tables. Just remember:Location, location location!

    Name: Happy Spivey

    Mayor Since: 1995

What are your day-to-dayresponsibilities as Mayor?

My job is to guide the effortsof the commissioners and townadministrator toward our goalsas a town. I basically spear-head a team effort to solve theproblems we have beenentrusted to fix by the voters. And I field most complaints!

What is the best part of your job? I honestly loveevery part of it. Even the animosity and complaints thatcome every once in a while, because I learn how to dealwith those situations. I also love working with the staff.

We may have the best set of town employees that Ive

ever worked with. They all genuinely love Ramseur.

If you could do one thing over, let s call it a MayorMulligan, what would it be? Back in the 90s I hadthe opportunity to fight against an annexation that wouldmake use of our water resource and wouldve helped ourtown prosper; but I let it go. I ll never let that happenagain. We have to fight for whats best for Ramseur.

What is the most important thing for everyone toknow about local government? All I can say isPLEASE PLEASE get involved! Only 5% of thepopulation voted in Randolph County in November. Mostpeople only get involved when something goes terriblywrong. Come to meetings. Ask questions. Support thepeople who you trust. Want to throw me out? VOTE.Want to keep me here? VOTE. We need your input!

Anything else? Well just that Ramseur is the best placeto live in Randolph County! Quote me on that!

My first conversationwith Henry Kingcovered everythingfrom mail orderbrides and dirty

ankles to life inprison. But thatswhat happens when

you spend an hour or two withFranklinvilles resident award-winningauthor and newspaper legend. For thoseof you old enough to remember, youprobably know Mr. King from his 30 yearsof interesting columns while working for

the Asheboro Courier-Tribune. You mayalso have read one of his 8 publishedbooks, like Who Said There Aint NoSuch Places, its sequel Dirty Ankles IsFar from Bath, NC or Places to Pray inNorth Carolina. For me, I just knew hewas an old fella whom everyone seems toknow and has a collection of arrow headson his porch. But after spending anafternoon with Henry King, I realized that

this was a man who has lived his life asfully as he knows how - and as he arrivesat a great milestone this month, can relivehis fondest moments as clear as we couldwatch it on a high definition TV. Henry King was born in Baltimore,Maryland in 1920. King grew up with adeep fascination and appreciation fornature and the world around him. As aboy, he learned to follow through with hisinterests 100% - like when he taughthimself how to twirl lassoes like thecowboys or how to execute intricate hoopdances like the Native Americans he

admired. This habit of fully immersinghimself would help him become one of thearea s most read and sought-after journalists. I would really get myself intothe stories I wrote King recalled, if I waswriting about the city garbage service, Iwould wake up at 4:30 am and ride theroute with them. When I wrote on the localmattress store, I literally spent the night inthe store to see how the mattress slept.

No place was off limits to Henry, like whenhe decided to spend the night in theLiberty jailhouse just to see how life wasbehind bars. (and found out what it waslike to sleep next to the local drunks) (See King page 8)

Many may know him as a local mainstay, but why did Henry decide the makeRandolph County his home? Well, it wasin nearby Asheboro where he met the

great love of his life: Maxine Fraiser. Kingrecalled the day in stunning detail: I wasin military training nearby and we gotdropped off one weekend in Asheboro toenjoy some time off. I was standing on thecorner trying to figure out what to do next.As I looked around, something odd andwonderful caught my eye. It was the mostbeautiful woman I had ever seen, and shehas white hair! I had to see her up close,

so I went down the street and crossedover so I could walk by her without makingher think I was tracking her down. As Icame close, I realized she didnt reallyhave white hair; but blonde, and the lightfrom the nearest building was shining onher at just the right angle. King madeanother pass and eventually gathered thenerve to introduce himself. It was now ornever Henry told himself. He later took ataxi out to some strange town calledFranklinville, where Maxine said shehailed from, and began courting his futurewife. Soon after this, Henry was shippedup to New England and eventuallyoverseas to fight in World War 2. I didntsee Maxine for four whole years and onlya few times before we were married, but

we courted through letters the wholetime. King recalled, I would always callher my mail-order-bride and I was hermail-order-groom! After the war, Kingdecided to settle in Franklinville to beclose to Maxine. I would work 6 days aweek at the cotton mill, then come backand work on building this house Henryexplained about the residence he still callshome. They stayed in the attic of his in-

laws house until their dream home wasfinished. I wanted to test myself to seehow far I could go. I didn t knoweverything about building houses but Itook notes from other people. I used tosay I built this house with my own 8fingers! (minus the two pointers he usesto hunt and peck the keyboard with!)

Henry King eventually foundhimself running around North Carolina, chasing the stories that seemed buriedtoo deep in the cracks and crevices of the

state to be headlines in the paper. Hewould find a way to lure you in withattention grabbing statements (when Ifirst met (so-and-so), she was wearing adead mans overalls) and find thosediamonds in the rough that most peopledidnt know exist. He recalled one storywhere he came happened to investigate arandom slingshot he noticed out by amailbox. Upon further investigation, he

met a sling shot sharp-shooter who hadamazing power and accuracy. He said hehad to get good at the sling-shot becausehe grew up in the Great Depression andhis family relied on him to kill rabbits andsquirrels for supper. Kings story, oncepublished, was picked up by local, regional, and eventually national newsoutlets. The guy ended up on The TonightShow with Johnny Carson, shooting stuffout of his hands on national TV. Allbecause someone followed a hunch andpaid a little attention to detail. Kingofficially retired from the news room in1981, but continued to write a fewcolumns until 1985 when he suffered astroke.

Since then, King has kept busyauthoring books and enjoying the manyhobbies he has picked up over the years. He has finished a collection of poems and

is currently working on a new book aboutChristmas in North Carolina. Out of all thethings I learned in my brief time talking toMr. King, one thing about him stuck outthe most. Its a quote that he hasobviously lived by his whole life, and Ihope to take to heart myself: Im notgoing to live life in the grandstands. Imgoing to be in the front row or out on thefield. Henry King turns 90 years old on

    March 10th. Happy Birthday Henry!

    At The Wella guest column

At the center of the Village is a deep well oflife-giving water where the townspeople meet.As they draw water their voices blend in theculture, society and wisdom that they share. Each month meet here at the well to hearthose voices. Continuing from last month we find agroup of women huddled together in a home, deciding what to do next. One of the womenhas been attacked by her husband and it islearned that he has kept her prisoner in herown home. The confusion and twistedconversations used by him to distract her fromthe truth of her life has come to a head. She isnow away from the home for the first time in

years and terrified of what is to come. Aknown demon is sometimes easier to deal withthan an unknown one. Her fear of what willhappen next puts her into a near anxietyattack. Where are your children? someonethinks to ask. They were playing with childrenat my next door neighbors home. Oh dear, that is right beside where he is now! Ok. Wehave to work fast. We need a plan. What if he

begins to look for her or goes to pick up thechildren? We take a moment to speak withher directly. This is very important so listenvery carefully. Do you want help in yoursituation? It is a quiet, tense moment. Shestiffly nods her head. The fear is great. Is nowthe time to change the situation is my nextquestion. Again, the lump of fear in her throatkeeps her from speaking and her head nods. Someone look up the Spousal AbuseHelp Line in the phone book. Call them to see

what they recommend that we do at this point. They have helped women through thissituation thousands of times. Who here isfamiliar to her children? Go to the housewhere they are and invite them to come withyou. Tell them that their mother has sent forthem. Avoid their father at all costs. Get therequick, before he does. Two of the women leave together onthe task to pick up the children. They plan

while on the way there, not to tell what isactually happening. They must leave no cluesfor the husband. His anger could be verydangerous to everyone involved. When theyget to the door where the children are playing, the phone rings and it is the father asking thatthe children to be sent home. Hand motionsby the just-arrived women tell the phone-answerer to put him off a while. They arehaving cookies now she fumbles. We hopehe has not sensed anything. No I havent

seen her, we hear her say, knowing he hasasked about his wife. We tell her that themother has sent for the children and there is aproblem that we cannot discuss. We call themother on the phone and she speaks to thechildren, asking them to come with us. Thatwas good. The first part of our plan hasworked. We leave word with the neighbor totell him that the mother picked them up. Thechildren cry at the sight of the mothers swollenlip and blackening eye. They have not seenthe wounds before because he was alwayscareful to hit, poke, pinch and hurt her inplaces underneath her clothes. Meanwhile, the county has dispatched

a patrol car to pick her up at a location in townthat is not directly in this neighborhood. Weprepare for the switch. She is nervous andwishes she had brought some things she mayneed. If she had carefully planned her exit, allthings would be in a better place. Once she is in the Deputys car, shecollapses and sobs. Her mind races in fear.Where has the strength come to do what Ihave just done? Will I be able to hold up?

What will he do when he gets his hands on meagain? Will anyone believe me, since theythink he is such a swell guy? Where will I go?How will I pay my way? What if he tries totake the children? Where will I find help?Little does she know that she is going to aplace where the good work that we beganwill continue. They give her a check-off-list ofAbusive Relationship Warning Signs. This will clarify and identify the

relationship woes as real abuse. Checkthe box beside the question if it applies, the directions say. This is what it asked. She carefully read and checked the items. Her mind followed along with somecomments. Do you feel nervous aroundhim? Check Do you have to be careful toavoid his anger? The resource people and a state-provided lawyer knew from the form that thewoman was in the right place. She wouldneed protection. They took her informationand her statement. She was offered refuge ata Safe House. She took it. And her nextfearful, tenuous step toward a new life had

What a crazy winter weve had tothis point. Repeated snows, ice, heavywinds not what we typically expect. Andit may not be over yet! Some predict wemay be in for one more snow in the middle

    of the month.

All of this whacky weatherhas likely left all kinds of debris in youryard. Mine currently has some twigs andsticks, a few leftover leaves and acorns, some larger branches, etc. As theweather starts to break and we havemilder temperatures, now is the perfecttime to start cleaning up this debris. Thisnot only helps by making the lawn cleanerand neater, but it also provides a clean

slate for the lawn to come back from itswinter rest. The ground clutter and debriswill suffocate existing grass as it emergesout of dormancy and prevent new grassfrom being able to get the sunlight it needs

to become established. All of this willresult in patchy, uneven lawn. While were talking about cleaning, another excellent idea this time of year isto do your seasonal maintenance on your

    lawn equipment.

Clean up your mowersand trimmers, replace or sharpen blades, change filters, change oil, lube, etc. Alsocheck your belts on riding equipment forexcess wear or cracking, and replace asneeded. The better condition theequipment you use, especially when itcomes to blades, the better results you willsee! March is also a great time for those

who missed the fall seeding season to getsome fresh seed down and allow time forit to become established before thesummer heat and dry-out takes its toll. Ifwe should happen to get the mid-month

s n o w m e n t i o n e dabove, seeding priorto that event is aprime opportunity asthe melting snow willprovides for very wetground for the seedto bury itself. If youseeded last fall andhave areas that didnot come in as wellas you would havehoped, or not icepatches that were

damaged by theharsh winter, thiswould also be youropportunity to reseedthese areas. Early springis also the time forapply ing l ime, i fneeded. The optimal

soil pH range for most grasses is 6.0-7.0.Anything below 6.0 and you have acidicsoil which will affect the general health ofthe lawn and benefit from lime. There area couple of ways to check the soil pH, one

being a small pH tester that can bepurchased at many farm and gardenstores. I will not attest to the accuracy ofthese devices, however they should beable to give you a general idea of whatrange youre in. The second way isthrough the NC Department of Agriculture.Sample boxes are available for free at NCCooperative Extension locations Randolph Countys is located at: 112 West

Walker Avenue in Asheboro. After pickingup your soil sample boxes, you will simplycollect soil samples from your yard, sendthem to be tested as directed by theinformation on the provided sample boxes, and in a few weeks, receive a detailedreport on the pH and nutrient content aswell as additional information. The reportwill also provide you very specificinformation on what additives your soilneeds and in what amounts. All of this isprovided at no cost and is an incrediblyvaluable resource. And finally, for those of you whoare truly passionate and aggressive inpursuit of that beautiful lawn, you canmake your first cutting toward the end ofthe month to even everything up. Whendoing this, you should have your blades

set very high with the intention of onlycutting the very tips off.
