Meet the MayorThe current Mayor of Ramsgate is Cllr Kim Gibson The deputy Mayor is Cllr Mary Dwyer

only a few have served at a time of great peril in Ramsgate as did Cllr ABC Kempe.Cllr Kempe was Mayor just prior to and during World War Two. He was a major influence in the construction of Ramsgate’s famous air raid shelter tunnel system, which saved so many lives in that conflict. Cllr Kempe is also the only Mayor to have served five consecutive terms. He was noted for his fondness for wearing a top hat around town, but unfortunately this picture does not include his celebrated headwear.Look out in a future issue of this magazine for an article on the unique tunnel system and how it saved lives in wartime. The work of the Mayor remains unchanged to this day in promoting Ramsgate and leading the town as its first citizen.

If you have a special event or run a community organisation and would like to request a visit from the Mayor, contact Ramsgate Town Council via the website, by telephone or by letter. Details are elsewhere within this magazine.

Cllr Gibson writes…I had the honour of becoming Mayor of Ramsgate in May this year and I have been able to go to events and meet people from all over Kent in this role. But I am still Cllr Kim Gibson, as well as Mayor, and wherever I go (officially or otherwise) I tell people of the wonderful place Ramsgate is, and they are very impressed that we have the only Royal Harbour in the UK.  Being Mayor has given me a great way to network, bringing people together to assist each other.I am also, together with a great team, able to raise money for local charities while working with local businesses and local people, and hopefully putting on events that are fun. I have been extremely lucky that loads of people have been willing to assist

me in one way or another. There are too many to thank personally, but I would like to take this chance to thank all those that have assisted in making things happen in this town, now and for future events.  Anyone who would like to help, please contact me. We are in this together.

The role of MayorThe Mayor and deputy Mayor are

current town councillors who serve a minimum of one year in the role before retirement or re-election.The election of the Mayor and

deputy Mayor takes place every year in early May as part of the annual statutory meeting of the town council, which is open to the public.

There has been a Mayor of Ramsgate since 1884, when the Corporation of Ramsgate was formed. Altogether there have been

64 Mayors, of which three have served more

than four times. All have added to the history of the town, but

REO - Ramsgate Event Organisers - were set up two and a half years ago, as an independent group and in association with the Ramsgate Town Council, to help bring back the community spirit of days gone by. The idea is that the 25 groups who organise most of the events in Ramsgate work together in support of each other and not against each other. We encourage each group to invite other event’s groups to attend their event to promote forthcoming events. A joint group may attract more funding and it has access to a store of equipment that can reduce the cost of staging an event. The group can also share expertise with smaller and newer members, plus joint advertising with our own editorial magazine, the Ramsgate Rocks, our first year produced and distributed 5,000 copies of a 44 page A6 Events Booklet, including 6,000 additional information postcards. Next year Ramsgate Rocks will have 10,000 copies. As a group, we also get much better access to the radio, Academy FM and the local paper, the Isle of Thanet Gazette. The Group meet up once every two months at the Council Chamber in the Custom House, home of Ramsgate Town Council. The next meetings are Monday 18th November and Monday 13th January at 7pm. If you are an organiser of a Ramsgate Event, please join us.Ralph Hoult Chairman 07969 672 674 | [email protected]

Chilton Lane East allotment site has 110 plots varying from half plots to full plots. We recently entered two competitions and did really well. The first one was the Kent Allotments and Garden Council competition. It was held on July 1st. We had to enter six plots, which were extremely difficult to pick out from 110.I mentioned to the plot holders that I had entered the allotment site into two competitions but not when they were. I wanted the allotment to be judged on how we are on a daily basis. We also entered the Kent Wildlife Trust competition. We have a school plot on our site and they did very well in achieving Bronze and Chilton Lane East allotment site achieved Silver. We were thrilled with this result and are waiting for the feedback on improvements that can be made to the allotment site. We will get the feedback at the presentation ceremony. On Sunday August 11th we held our annual site BBQ. Eighty people attended and we had a very lovely time and there was plenty of food for everyone. Phew!At the BBQ we held the judging of the onion competition. There were some very good onions, even if one was not edible. Ha, ha!After all the onions had been weighed, Jim Bailey won 1st prize, Paul Daniels came 2nd, Sheila Redmond 3rd and Godfrey Power 4th. After the plot holders saw the onions that won, there are now more keen to try and beat the record. The challenge is now on!We are a very friendly allotment site and try to be as encouraging and positive as we can.Mrs Kaye Daniels Site Rep, Chilton Lane East Allotments

Montefiore WoodlandIf you go down to the woods... In April 2011 Thanet District Council handed over the area known as the Montefiore Woodland in Dumpton Park Drive to the Ramsgate Town Council, to own and to manage it “in the wider public interest”.The Council manage the site on behalf of the people of Ramsgate and with the support of a group of conservation volunteers. Largely thanks to the enthusiastic support of two local Councillors, a group of conservation volunteers was formed to look after it, and ‘The Friends of Montefiore Woodland’ held their first Open Meeting in February 2012. The main aim of the Friends is to maintain and improve this natural woodland area - the only one of its kind in urban Ramsgate, and home to parakeets, foxes and hedgehogs - in order to conserve the habitat and wildlife, and encourage its responsible use by members of the local community. They also hope to persuade local residents to take an active role in the group’s activities. The woodland is located on Dumpton park drive next to the Montefiore Medical Centre and

The Ramsgate FundRamsgate Town Council supports a wide range of community organisations via its Ramsgate Fund. Bodies large and small can apply for support for their projects. The fund is open to community organisations based in Ramsgate or those that can show that the work they are promoting will benefit Ramsgate. The fund is for capital items only and there is an upper limit of £3,000. In exceptional circumstances the council may subscribe a larger sum at its discretion. The fund is cash limited and in some years demand may exceed the funds available. In assessing each application, the council will look at the benefit to the community, whether your organisation has applied elsewhere for joint funding (a good idea) and what resources your organisation will contribute itself, whether in cash or in kind.An application form is available from our office at the Custom House, Harbour Parade, Ramsgate or directly at www.ramsgatetown.orgAn example of a project part-funded from the Ramsgate Fund, as well as by Thanet District Council, is the recent renovation of the Ramsgate seafront shelters by the Ramsgate Society, below.

Saturday, October 5th, 2013, saw the 150th anniversary of the first passenger trains running from the Ramsgate Harbour station. The opening was an important milestone in the town’s history as the new station was a key element in the arrival of the holidaymaker. Ramsgate became one of the country’s greatest seaside resorts, which also attracted the rich, famous and royalty. The Harbour station was also known as the Sands station due to its location adjacent to Ramsgate’s golden beach. Trains arrived via a mile-long tunnel hewn from the chalk cliffs towards Broadstairs. This tunnel was to take on a more sinister role in 1940, when it became home to over 1,000 people following a disastrous air raid on the town.

In 1939 the borough council had the foresight to construct a 2½ mile network of tunnels around the town, which provided deep shelter from air raids and shelling during WWII. This new network connected with the former railway tunnel to make Ramsgate one of the safest towns in the country, despite its location close to occupied Europe. The railway tunnel continued in use after the war, providing access from Dumpton to the seafront via a narrow gauge electric railway. The “Tunnel Railway” finally closed in 1965 and the system has remained abandoned ever since. However, June 1st, 2014, will see the reopening of part of the former railway tunnel to the public as a heritage attraction from where guided tours of a section of the ARP tunnels will be conducted.
