    PTSA PRESIDENT TAKES NOTEJill Rintoul

irst I would like to welcome our new Prin-cipal Claire Mawhinney who will officially be at Randall full-time starting February

3rd. We are excited for her to start and look forward to working with her in the future. The announcement was the night before our arti-cles were due so will have more to update next month!

The PTSA is proud to announce, that due to your support through membership, donations, and fundraisers, we have just provided grants for our staff totaling just over $6,500! These grants will be used to benefit our students in the classroom and special activities or clubs. We were able to provide funds for classroom supplies, music equipment, technology, books and much more! We thank all the staff that applied for the grants and the committee that took the time to go through each and every one.

It is not too late to join the PTSA. So if you keep meaning to—NOW is the time as the cut-off is near. Please consider volunteering when asked. Now more than ever, we are be-ing asked to help many of the clubs with their fundraising or projects during the day. Also, we are still under our goal for cash donations and would appreciate your support so we can do more for our students and staff in addition to the grants. You can pick up forms in the front office or download them from the PTSA website. We will be having a General PTSA Meeting on Thursday, February 20th at 4:30PM in the cafeteria before conference night starts if you wish to attend. As always, if you have any questions or need to get in touch with us please email us at [email protected].

RANDALL VOLUNTEERS HAVE HEART ON MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAYAndrea Tamayo, R.A.Y.S. Council

On January 20th, 2014 a group of 38 kids and teens celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by taking a “day on” to volunteer at the Alafia River State Park to get rid of air potatoes, an invasive species.

Thirty-four of the student volunteers were from Randall Middle School, one was from Bevis Elementary School and three were from high school. All of the volunteers participated in the same event and made an impact on the park. They had to rustle through leaves, dirt and foliage to find the air potatoes. To make sure they wouldn’t grow again, they used their hands to dig up the large potato roots from the ground and remove the vines wrapped around the trees.

The work they did was tough and dirty, many kids ended up with burs all over their legs and arms. Most of the volunteers said they had tons of fun and were glad they were helping the environment and their community.
