    The Devil Beat

    Greetings RPS Music Family,

On behalf of the entire RPS musicfaculty I wanted to wish everyone ahappy New Year! I hope that theholiday season was full of family time, relaxation and fun!

2011 was an incredibly successful yearfor the Randolph Music Department. Our band and choral ensembles

continue to grow at all grade levels.

A brand new music curriculum, TheBlue Devils Band Binder, wascrafted by the RPS music faculty andimplemented at the elementarylevel.

We welcomed our brand new, fulltime RCMS Band Director; theincredibly talented Ms. MackenzieViventi.

The RHS band performed at theMICCA festival for the first time inalmost ten years.

    The RCMS Jazz ensemble was

    formedOver 250 4th and 5th grade students

signed up to play an instrumentThe first annual All Chorus Day

was held to great success!100 band uniforms were purchased

for the RHS Marching BandElementary school PTOs invested in

Orff instruments for the generalmusic curriculum

These are just a few highlights from2011. I am confident, more thanever, that we will see even greateraccomplishments in 2012! As we lookforward to the New Year, I thought itwould be nice to share what othershave said about the power of music:

Music expresses that which cannot be put

into words and cannot remain silent

    ~Victor Hugo~

" Music can change the worldbecause it can change people."

    ~ Bono, U2~

    "Music does bring people together.

It allows us to experience the same

    emotions.

People everywhere are the same in heart

    and spirit.

No matter what language we speak, what

    color we are,

the form of our politics or the expression

of our love and our faith,

music proves: We are the same."~ John Denver ~

"I think music in itself is healing.

It's an explosive expression of humanity.

It's something we are all touched by.

No matter what culture we're from,

    everyone loves music."

    ~ Billy Joel ~

"Music gives a soul to the universe,

    wings to the mind,

    flight to the imagination,

    and life to everything."

    ~ Plato ~

In closing, I have a New Yearchallenge! I challenge everystudent, parent, guardian, family andfriend to do one thing: make musicpart of your day, every single day.Listen to radio on the way to work;listen to your iPod before going tobed; attend a concert as a family. The possibilities are endless, butmore importantly, the rewards areendless. Music is an incredibly

powerful medium that brings joy toall. May you experience the joy ofmusic in 2012!

    Sincerely,

Eric M. LapradeMusic Department Chair, K-12Randolph Public Schools

Happy New Year from Lyons SchoolMusic! The music classes and the

instrument lessons have been verybusy. Here are some of thehighlights:

Kindergarten Students haveplayed simple accompaniments tosimple songs on the new Orffinstruments purchased by the PTO.Theyve learned about tone colorby playing different rhythminstruments as they sing a simplesong. Just before vacation, students experienced what its liketo sing in two different groups(with a little help from theadults!). They are learning thesound of Sol-Mi and are reallyimproving at keeping steady beat.

Grade 1: These students arelearning to read and performsimple rhythm patterns. Theyrealso learning to singindependently, identify high andlow sounds, and show they knowthe difference between soft andloud. Steady beat is refined. We

use a lot of games to reinforcethose concepts.

Grade 2: The second gradestudents have been performingsimple rhythm patterns usingstandard notation. They have alsolearned how to draw whole noteson the lines and spaces of thetreble clef staff and each one hasa letter name. These studentshave also played a simpleaccompaniment to a singing game

using our new Orff instruments.Steady beat, high and low sounds, soft and loud sounds continue tobe explored.

Grade 3: Third grade students arereading and performing morecomplex rhythm patterns. Theyhave learned the lines and spacesof the treble clef staff. Thisprepared them to sing a song usingonly their own voices and Orffinstrument accompaniment. Justbefore vacation they sang theirfirst partner song.

    E.G. Lyons Schoo(cont.)

    They will begin playing recordeJanuary.

Grade 4: These students havebeen very focused on learningabout note values and the line

and spaces of the treble clef stTheyve been performing rhythpatterns more fluently. Thishelped them to read a simple Oinstrument accompaniment to song they learned forThanksgiving. The fourth gradstudents are also adding many musical terms and notation totheir vocabulary.

Grade 5: The fifth grade studeare really gaining experience w

music reading. They have beeworking on both treble and basclef staffs. They have beenintroduced to simple sixteenthnote rhythms. They have sungaccompanied themselves on Orinstruments. They are currentworking on rhythm compositionwhich they will perform in claslater in January. This class, toreally building its musicalvocabulary.

Instrumental music: Our fourand fifth grade band studentscontinue to progress through thnew Blue Devils Band Binder.

There are six assessments durinthe year, called Blue Devils BaChallenges, that measure studeachievement. Almost all studehave completed the first two. Were really proud of theiraccomplishment!

    High School

Greetings from RHS and Happy 2012!

The Randolph High School MusicDepartment has had a wonderfullybusy Winter Season! The studentsled the community in song onDecember 1, 2011 at the Lighting ofCrawford Square, where they weresimultaneously able to show offtheir stylish music apparel asfurnished by the Boosters.

The Winter Concert was incrediblywell-attended by families, studentsand staff, with each ensembleboasting strong, energeticperformances. The fourteen-member Percussion Ensembleimmediately captivated the crowdwith the primal piece Serengeti;this striking work was notablyexecuted without a conductorpresent.

Concert Chorale performed an eerierendition Sinjays Medieval Gloria, marching unaccompanied andindependently to the stage guidedonly by the candles they cradledin their hands.

The Chamber Singers impressivelyscintillated the audience with aneclectic array of pieces, highlightedby the nostalgic Christmastime isHere (fromA Charlie BrownChristmas) and the jovial ThreeHungarian Folk Songs by MatyasSieber. Both choral groups wereaccompanied by talented RHS seniorAlexander Buiel.

The Jazz Band transformed andenlivened the audience during theirfive song set -bodies were dancingin their seats throughout theperformance- taking some out oftheir seats during senior JaiceRottenbergs impressive drum solo.Fellow senior Maxwell Parkerconducted the standard

Canteloupe Island, which he alsotaught to the ensemble himself as

    Randolph

    High School(cont.)

    part of his senior internship.

The Concert Band ended theevenings event with a nocturnallythemed program. Listeners weretreated to seasonal marvel ThePolar Express; they painted abeautiful picture with their soundwhich did justice to the book andfilm, respectively. Prior tojourneying to the North Pole, theband heartily demonstrated theirdedication and musicianship durinBruce Yurkos sinuously intense

    Night Dances.

The most meaningful part of theevening took place during the lastnumber, where the combinedensembles invited alumni to join ostage. Former Randolph BandDirector and RHS Alum Dave Berryshared that he enjoyed beingincluded in the event, and that itwas a lot of fun. What wasimpressive to me, Berry notedwhile taking a break at the Senior

District Music Festival, was the[warm] reception from the highschool students themselves, makin[the alumni] feel welcome. Headded that this experience hasinspired him to connect with moreof his own musical progeny fromRandolphs music program toencourage them to take part in thevent in the future.

Presently, the department is sharthe successes of Maxwell Parker,

Cody OToole and Kaylie Nighorn athey participate in the SeniorDistrict Music Festival. In a fewshort weeks, students will auditiofor Junior and Senior SEMSBA , forwhich they are now preparing.

Thank you again for your support these brilliant students!
