Upcoming Programs & Events

Dear Rotarians,

I am honored to serve as your club president for the 2014-15 Rotary year. What an amazing opportunity to join local Rotarians and be a part of Rotary International. It is exciting to imagine what can be accomplished as we work together to improve our community and the world.

I invite each of you to join us for fun, fellowship, and an opportunity to practice “Service Above Self”. I want to encourage every member to participate this year in some way. Expect to be engaged and challenged in ways you never imagined as our new board and committee chairs bring our membership together to make this a year in which we can springboard our community, district, and global efforts to sustainable and expandable initiatives that will literally make change in the world.

Yours in Rotary Service, Diane Winnemuller

In the March issue of The Rotarian, Diana The lending libraries beat out Bill Gates at No. 25 and Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi at No. 50. Today, there are more than 16,000 lending libraries in 55 countries. The Little Free Library phenomenon was started by Rotarian Todd Bol.

Randolph Rotary continues to build libraries in our community one book at time. Each week, we donate a book to Randolph County Partnership for Children. We also put dictionaries into the hands of third graders each year.

One of our goals for the upcoming year is to reach more children in Randolph County through our literacy efforts. With that idea in mind, we would like to provide 5th graders a book entitled Your Greatest Power. This book has inspired many people to consider their power of choice. If we can inspire rising middle school students to explore their options, we will create a legacy in our community and hopefully a book that children and parents alike will want to share.

Sixty-seven million children worldwide have no access to education, and more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. One of Rotary’s goals is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy.

In the March issue of The Rotarian, Diana Schoenberg wrote about a grassroots effort to establish neighborhood lending libraries. The editors of Reader’s Digest ranked the libraries as No. 11 on the list of the “50 Surprising Reasons We Love America.”

FAMILY DAY WITH THE WINSTON-SALEM DASH DASDASH

Don’t miss the opportunity to have a family night out with members of our club and others in the district on Saturday, August 2.

Tickets are $7.50 each and include a Dash cap, Playball! program, and Burger King Value Meal. Kids will also have the opportunity to run the bases after the game, too.

Bring your children and grandchildren for a fun-filled evening. We would like to charter a bus depending upon the number of attendees. More information to come!

Special thanks to Michael Ayers and Drew Maerz for chairing the Service Above Self and Public Service Award Programs. The exceptional recipients of the 2014 service awards inspired each of us. As Randolph Rotary club members, we often meet individuals in our community who exemplify the spirit of ‘Service Above Self’. As we continue to grow our membership, please invite them to join us for lunch and check out what rotary is all about.

MAKING UP IS HALF THE FUN

Kim Lisagor, member of the Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo Daybreak, recently shared her thoughts about making up missed meetings. She makes it a point to put Rotary on her travel itinerary. One of her favorite experiences happened while visiting her parents in Vancouver. After having lunch with the Club of Vanncouver Chinatown, Kim was invited to join a few Rotarians as they visited the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. National Geographic featured it as one of the world’s “hidden travel gems” after her visit and she would have missed the opportunity to see it if it weren’t for local Rotarians.

Another Rotarian, Marvin Axler, of the Rotary Club of Garden State of Cherry Hill, N.J., and his wife, Marilyn, have enjoyed make-ups all over the world. Axler, a Rotarian of 30 years has had a perfect attendance record for 28 years. Once, while the Axlers were vacationing on a French island, they were temporarily stranded during an airline strike. While attending a make-up meeting at a nearby hotel, they met an airport administrator who helped them find an earlier flight home. On another trip, they lost their passports while exploring Venezuela’s Margarita Island. During a Rotary dinner, they met government officials who helped them get to the U.S. Embassy so that they could get new passports. Axler says, “It’s one of the things in Rotary that people don’t often take advantage of: We have a family all over the world.”
