ARARARARARCHERCHERCHERCHERCHERY NOY NOY NOY NOY NOW W W W W A A A A A YEAR RYEAR RYEAR RYEAR RYEAR ROUNDOUNDOUNDOUNDOUNDAAAAACTIVITYCTIVITYCTIVITYCTIVITYCTIVITYThere is now a new schedule and place for archery. Shootingwill be on Tuesday evenings starting at 6:00 PM. We will nowshoot year round and not take a break during hunting season. The new location for the archery range is on the 100 competitionrifle range. (east of the public line) We start shooting at 6:00 butyour help in getting set up before that is appreciated. 3-Dtargets and bag or block targets will be available to shoot. Youmust pass a shooting proficiency test to shoot at the 3-D targets. The fee is $5.00 and shooters under 18 are free. Any type ofbow can be used but the arrows must be tipped with field ortarget points (no broadheads). If you are a club member, andwish to shoot your bow during the time the range is open to thepublic, contact one of the discipline leaders for information.

In order to shoot well, shooters must exercise excellent “sight alignment”and “trigger control,” both at the same time! Trigger control is important becausethe gun is held in one hand, at the end of an outstretched arm, and and “fault” intrigger control can easily cause a perfectly aimed shot to miss the target center bya substantial margin.
The bullseye league at WAC meets every Thursday evening at thebullseye range, where a 60-shot course of fire is completed - 20 shots each ofslow, timed, and rapid fire. On the first, second, and (sometimes) the third Sundayof the month, an “1800,” consisting of two 900s, is fired, typically with a .22 and acenterfire pistol, often .45 caliber. There is also bullseye training for juniors, on thefirst and third Thursdays of the month (check the monthly calendar), on the PublicLine, immediately after the regular bullseye league. (Although the club calendarincludes a “senior bullseye league,” that is not in operation). There is no need fornew participants to worry about their score, because no scoring is done, exceptthat shooters might keep a record of their own scores. For this reason, there are noscores reported in this newsletter, even though many people participate!
We invite you to come and see what shooters are doing when they shootbullseye. In order to shoot, you must be “qualified,” meaning that you havepreviously participated successfully in bullseye at WAC, or else you must becomequalified by demonstrating that you can keep all of your shots in the bullseyescoring rings in slow, timed, and rapid fire. If you want to qualifiy, contact bullseyeleague chairman Stewart Bierbower at (727) 576-8537, or [email protected].

Although there are few articles in the newsletter about “Bullseye” atWAC, there is nevertheless an active bullseye program. For those who donot know, “bullseye,” also called “precision pistol shooting,” is the traditionalone-handed pistol program that has been in effect since the 1940s.
The National Pistol Championship is conducted at Camp Perry,Ohio, in July, along with Smallbore and High Power Rifle Championships. ABullseye match consists of 90 shots, comprised of 30 shots each, of slowfire, timed fire, and rapid fire, for a total possible score of 900 (which no onehas ever shot). Slow fire can be fired either at 50 yards or 25 yards(depending on the range and match rules) and timed and rapid fire are firedat 25 yards. In slow fire, 10 shots are fired in 10 minutes. In timed and rapidfire, strings of five shots are fired in 20 and 10 seconds, respectively.Targets are scored after 10 rounds. All of the participants shoot at the sametime (subject to range capacity) and shooters score the other shooters. Abullseye 900 takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours to complete.
