Chemical group Italmatch Chemicals has acquired Magpie Polymers, a French start-up that has developed

an advanced, patented precious metals separation technology with extreme selectivity in difficult-to-treat

waste or process water This latest-generation technology by Magpie Polymers captures metals, such as

palladium, platinum, silver and gold, that would otherwise be lost. According to Italmatch Chemicals, this

investment allows the group to further consolidate its focus on industrial water and process treatment, thus

expanding and refining the current production range, as well as reaching new added-value market targets.

"This transaction permits us to embrace open innovation," said Sergio Iorio, CEO of Italmatch Chemicals,

"and to continue our growth via both internal and external guidelines, through quality, research,

Ardian's Italmach Chemicals has bolted on French start-up Magpie Polymers. Magpie was previously

backed by venture investor Emertec Gestion. Magpie's core product is a resin-based filtration technology

that enables the collection of traces of precious metals. Ardian acquired Italmach in a management buyout

in July 2014. The business bolted on US rival Compass Chemical International in June 2016. Founded in

1997, Genoa-based Italmatch supplies chemical additives that can be used in connection with lubricants,

water treatment, oil and gas products, and plastics. It has operations in Italy, Spain, Germany, UK, Asia and

the US. It employs around 500 people and generates around €340m of revenues.

open innovation, Italmatch ha infatti comprato l'azienda francese Magpie Polymers, giovane startup che ha

gestito da Emertec Gestion. L'investimento in un progetto così altamente innovativo permette a Italmatch

Chemicals di consolidare ulteriormente il proprio focus nel settore del trattamento acque a uso industriale,

espandendo e perfezionando l'attuale gamma produttiva con la possibilità di intercettare anche nuovi target

di mercato ad alto valore aggiunto. Magpie Polymers ha infatti sviluppato una tecnologia che permette di

trattenere metalli quali il palladio, il platino, argento e oro che altrimenti andrebbero persi. A inizio giugno

Italmatch ha annunciato il closing di un'operazione di finanziamento del piano di investimenti e contestuale

rifinanziamento del debito del gruppo (si veda altro articolo di BeBeez). Lo scorso settembre Italmatch ha

comprato dal gruppo Solvay il ramo di azienda specializzato nella produzione e marketing di additivi a base

di fosforo per il settore minerario, la lavorazione dei metalli, l'inibizione di corrosione e la pigmentazione

(scarica qui il comunicato stampa). Sempre da Solvay nel gennaio 2016 aveva comprato il ramo d'azienda

attivo nella produzione di soluzioni e additivi a base di fosfonati e acido fosfonico per la desalinizzazione e il

trattamento acque, mentre nel giugno 2016 aveva comprato Compass Chemical International negli Usa (si

veda altro articolo diBeBeez). Italmatch ha chiuso il 2016 con 340 milioni di euro di ricavi, un ebitda di 49,5

milioni e un debito finanziario netto di 105 milioni, dopo aver chiuso il 2015 con 263 milioni di euro di

Italy's Italmatch Chemicals has acquired Magpie Polymers, a French startup that has developed an

advanced and patented technology for selective filtration to recover precious metals. Founded in 2011 as a

spin-off from the Ecole Polytechnique, Magpie Polymers produces proprietary technology that captures

metals, such as palladium, platinum, silver and gold, that would otherwise be lost. The investment allows

Italmatch Chemicals to further consolidate its focus on industrial water & process treatment, and expand its

production range. "This transaction permits us to embrace open innovation and to continue our growth via

both internal and external guidelines, through quality, research, development, technology and performance,

but also through new and important acquisitions," said Sergio Iorio, CEO of Italmatch Chemicals. "Magpie is

La start-up française Magpie Polymers vient d'être acquise par Italmatch Chemicals, a annoncé, le 7 juillet,

le groupe italien de spécialités. Les modalités financières de l'opération n'ont pas été divulguées. Spin-off

de l'École polytechnique, Magpie Polymers est spécialisé dans les polymères de filtration permettant de

séparer et récupérer les métaux précieux dans les effluents de déchets. Dotée d'une technologie

propriétaire permettant une sélectivité extrême, l'entreprise tricolore peut ainsi récupérer des métaux

comme le platine, le palladium, le rhodium, l'argent ou encore l'or, mais aussi d'autres métaux, des

composés organiques et l'eau dure ou salée. Ses produits sont utilisables dans des installations adaptées

aux résines échangeuses d'ions, avec une sélectivé accrue. Magpie Polymers est basé à Saint-Pierre-lès-

Nemours (Seine-et-Marne) et était auparavant détenu par le fonds d'investissement FLM (Emertec

Gestion). Pour Italmatch, cette acquisition est l'occasion de renforcer et d'étoffer ses activités dans le

domaine des traitements d'eaux industrielles et de procédés, notamment pour le secteur de l'industrie

minière. Détenu par le fonds européen Ardian depuis 2014 (CPH n°682), le groupe italien de spécialités

fondé en 1997 est focalisé sur les additifs de performance pour les lubrifiants, le traitement de l'eau, le

pétrole et gaz et les plastiques. Italmatch recense plus de 500 salariés dans le monde pour un chiffre

d'affaires annuel de l'ordre de 340 millions d'euros. Le groupe détient six usines en Europe (Italie, Espagne,

Allemagne et Royaume-Uni), quatre dans la zone Asie-Pacifique (Chine et Japon) et deux aux États-Unis

depuis l'acquisition il y a un an de l'Américain Compass Chemicals, spécialiste des phosphonates et

additifs pour le traitement de l'eau et du pétrole et gaz (CPH N°764).
