Today’s Standard

• MCC8.NS.1 Understand informally that every number has a decimal expansion; the rational numbers are those with decimal expansions that terminate in 0s or eventually repeat. Know that other numbers are called irrational (non-terminating and non-repeating decimals).

EQ and Today’s Goal

• EQ: How do I distinguish between rational and irrational numbers?

• Today we are learning how to distinguish between rational and irrational numbers and will practice sorting numbers in to these two categories.

Two Kinds of Real Numbers

• Rational Numbers

• Irrational Numbers

Rational and Irrational Numbers

What’s the difference?

Page 12: Rational vs Irrational Numbers PPT

Rational Numbers

• A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a fraction or ratio (rational).

• When the fraction is divided out, it becomes a terminating or repeating decimal.

Rational NumbersNice numbers.

1.    = 0.1

2.  7  = 7.0 or 7/1

3. -5.9 =

Rational: -6,-1/2, 0, 2/3…

Integers: …-2,-1,0,1,2..

Whole: 0,1,2,…

Natural: 1,2,3,….

Irrational NumbersAn irrational number is not expressed as a

fraction. As decimals, irrational numbers do not repeat in a pattern or terminate.

= 3.141592654…..

= 1.414213562…..

OR = 3.25225222522225…

Closing

• Each student will be given a number on an index card.

• Students will determine whether their number is rational or irrational. Students will stand up and go to the side of the class (predetermined by teacher) that is labeled rational or irrational.

• Class discussion on why students think that their number is rational or irrational.
