WHAT IS SO IMPORTANT?

Teaching PDHPE is so important because it is making people aware of the effect that their lifestyle choices have on their bodies. With appropriate education our students will be able to make the necessary changes in their lives to become healthy.

Being Healthy is not about just being fit. It is a state where you are mentally, physically and spiritually grounded.

PHYSICAL INACTIVITY: A GLOBAL PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM

According to the World Health Organisation people are adopting increasingly more sedentary lifestyles. What is the real problem with this?

Physical inactivityGlobally, around 31% of adults aged 15 and over were insufficiently active in 2008 (men 28% and women 34%). Approximately 3.2 million deaths each year are attributable to insufficient physical activity.

HOW MUCH PHYSICAL ACTIVITY SHOULD WE DO?

The recommended amount of activity for a child between the age of five and seventeen is sixty minutes per day and there are also benefits for doing more than this each day.

Everyone can do exercise of some sort or another. Those who are less able can start by doing short amounts of activity and building up as they can.

IS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY WORTH IT?

According to WHO (World Health Organisation) Regular and adequate levels of physical activity reduce the risk of hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, breast and colon cancer, depression and the risk of falls;

improve bone and functional health; and are a key determinant of energy expenditure, and thus fundamental to energy balance and weight control.

Of course its worth it!

OVERALL BENEFITS An active lifestyle has been proven to improve the quality of ones life. PDHPE helps to increase awareness about the issues with a sedentary lifestyle however it is also much more than that.

PDHPE looks at growth, physical, social and emotional. It helps us to develop our communication skills, influences the choices that we make, teaches us road safety as well as safe environments and much more.
