No more teachers, no more books … now wait a minute … there are always more books!

JOIN US FOR A SPECIAL NAIDOC WEEK

CELEBRATION OF A NEW LOCAL BOOK!

School holidays are coming

around again—so soon?

When you’ve stopped being

exhausted from all your

schoolwork, head down to the

library and join in the Wild and

Woolly holiday activities!

There will be art classes at the

Noosa Regional Gallery and

the Cooroy Butter Factory

Arts Centre; make pom pom

and softie monsters to cuddle;

create animal portraits; or join

in the great Lego Building

Challenge!

OR … you could catch up on

some reading with some of the

new books hitting the shelves

this month!

Maliyan, a proud eagle meets a turkey, Wagun, who is a silly bird, and together these two new friends begin to do silly-bird things. The Elders and Maliyan’s parents are very disappointed, warning Maliyan that it’s hard to soar like an eagle when you are surrounded by turkeys.

Maliyan sees the error of his ways and together with the other animals, works to clean up the mess wrought by too many silly birds. But some birds will always be silly…

WILD & WOOLLY CRAFTS

Knitting Neds welcome

Have you ever wondered

how you can knit without

needles?

You can use just your

fingers, or make a simple

tool called a Knitting

Nancy (or Neddy).

Join us at Noosa and Cooroy libraries as we make our own Nancy

or Neddy, then knit whatever you like.

We’ll also learn how to

knit the normal way, with knitting needles, and make some cute woolly gifts to share! See holiday program

for details.

Coming Soon … Would you read this book? Set in a future when all the animals are believed killed by a virus. People are not allowed contact with any creatures, in case they can catch it too. A twelve year old boy, Kester, who can’t speak, has been living the past 6 years in a home for children, where he is fed formula and has no friends. When he hears cockroaches and pigeons talking to him, he thinks he might be going mad. The creatures help him escape, and take him to a place where the last wild animals have survived. But they need help. And Kester is their last chance. 100 animals and 2 children embark on a quest to save “the Last Wild”. Will they succeed? Coming to a library near you!

Rad raw reads: reviews, by kids, for kids We always love hearing what you think of the

books you read , even the ones you don’t like.

My name is Ruby, I am 9 and I live in

the rainforest at Yandina.

My favourite author is Astrid Lindgren

but I also love the author of the Ivy and

Bean books- Annie Barrows.

The book that hooked me was:

Pippi Longstocking, written by Astrid

Lingren and illustrated by Tony Ross.

Pippi Longstocking is the main

character in the story. She is really,

really strong and wild. She lives on her

own (with no parents!) in a little house

called ‘Villekulla Cottage’. Her best

friends are her neighbours, Annika and

Tommy.

Pippi, Annika and Tommy go on lots of

adventures like the time where they

went to the circus and Pippi becomes

part of the show because she is so

strong. Stronger than the strong man!

My favourite part was when Pippi out-

smarted the police by climbing onto her

roof. They had come to make her go to

school but they couldn’t catch her!

If I could play a character in this book it

would definitely be Pippi because she is

funny and awesome. She also has a

horse and a monkey called ‘Mr Nelson’.

Have you ever felt that you

are jinxed? That no matter

what you do, you will always

seem like a failure?

Eric Vale knows how you feel

Ever since he got stuck with

his awful nickname, every

attempt to

shake it off

seems to fail.

But he never

gives up

trying.

Of course, he

escapes into

his own fantasy world by

creating his comic super hero,

Secret Agent Derek ’Danger’

Dale, in his journal.

In his private writings, comic

hero Derek ’Danger’ Dale

always comes out as the one

who wins the day.

You may have liked reading

Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but

RAW Magazine

thinks you will

like Eric Vale,

Epic Fail and

sequels even

more.

We have inside

information that

the next series of

books will feature Secret

Agent Derek ’Danger’ Dale in

his own adventures.

BIG WORDS When little words are not quite enough

From a secret location, the Word Spy

reports on the mysteries of the English

language.

Where did it come from?

Why is it so weird at times?

A secret message is enclosed!

Can you decipher it?

Sometimes, when

writing a story,

we can find it easy to

use the first words that

come into our heads.

When you think about

it, these words can be

a bit, well,

plain: flat

or lifeless.

Never fear!

RAW Kids

Magazine

can help!

Each issue we will be

bringing you new and

exciting words that you

can use to spice up

your amazing written

creations.

You can also find your

own BIG words by

looking in a

thesaurus

(which is not

an ancient

dinosaur but a

book or web-

site filled with

wondrous new

words to use.)

GIVE THESE WORDS A TRY

INSTEAD OF ...

mad, try : furious livid, outraged, vexed,

infuriated, fuming

Candy Land by Xanthe C. Aged 9

Far, far away from here, there’s a land of candy.

Not many people have heard

about it, but if you have, you

must keep it a secret. If you

don’t, it will be a world wide non-

secret.

Candy Land is a far away land

with no such things as humans,

cats, dogs and everything we

know about. Candy Land is all

just made from candy (isn’t that

obvious). Well, if you ask me I

would say that it is the world’s

most beautiful place ever. If you

don’t believe me, then listen to

this - it has popcorn mountains,

crystal clear white chocolate

waterfalls, lemonade springs

and red M&Ms as hail.

NOTHING CAN BEAT THAT!

The trees are covered in mint

leaves with red raspberries in

between.

The bad thing about this

dreamland is the terrifying

gingerbread queen. She has

the power to shoot sweet

sugar snacks like sherbet,

snakes, strawberry cream and

smarties. She also has

a red liquorice

laser, which is

so strong that it

killed her servant

the red jelly

snake. He did

everything for

her, even cleaned

her toenails (eew).

But enough of that.

Only gingerbread people lived

there, but the special thing

about them was that they

could make marshmallows in

a minute (now that’s a

record). Another thing about

the gingerbread men and

women was that they sing

and talk like angels. Even in

the morning and both night

and day, sad or

happy, you name it,

they’re angels!

One gingerbread’s

name was Bubblegum.

She loved this dreamy

land. She lived in a big

gingerbread house, with a

bit of every candy you can

think of including sour snakes

and lolly pops. She also had

musk sticks as fences.

“Only ginger-

bread people

lived there”

KIDS

WRITE

People on farms have fairy

floss sheep. When they are

sheared, they just press a

button and hey presto - it’s

done. Then the fairy floss

gets sent to the ginger

makers and the ginger

makers stitch, stitch, stitch;

sew, sew, sew, with their fruit

sticks. And there you have it,

now you only have to add the

smarties and you are finished

and this is what all the ginger-

bread people wear!

Xanthe attended a Voices on

the Coast workshop at Cooroy

Library in April, Creating

Fantasy Worlds, with author

Louise Cusack. This piece is the

result of that day.

Well done, Xanthe!

What’s your favourite animal? Your cat? A giraffe? A spotted quoll? Is your favourite animal from a book: a hungry caterpillar, or a beautiful butterfly? Eric Carle, Very Hungry Caterpillar author, has created a gallery and we are all invited to add our creations. Draw or make your favourite animal, scan and add your art to a worldwide collection at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. We’ll be creating our own drawings and models during school holidays at your library, and at Butter Factory Arts Centre. Watch for dates on the library website: www.library.noosa.qld.gov.au

Why did the chicken

cross the road? Look behind you!!

Kids dRAW A special part of RAW Magazine is reserved for kids who love to draw. Next school holidays, join us at Cooroy and Noosaville libraries and Butter Factory Arts Centre, while we create some fantastic artwork inspired by our wonderful books.

These two works by Ruby, aged 9, are heading for the Eric Carle Museum. thecarlefavoriteanimal.blogspot.com.au/ You can add your drawings too!

If you would like your drawing (any subject) to be in a future issue of RAW Kids Magazine, just send it to us.

Wild and woolly recipes to share with family and friends!

You will need:

An adult (just in case)

60 grams of cheddar cheese 2 plain tortillas ground black pepper

tomato salsa guacamole yoghurt to serve

You might ask an adult to help. Grate cheese onto a small plate.

Heat large non-stick frying pan over medium heat.

Put tort i l la in heated pan

Sprinkle cheese over tortilla in an even layer. Grind black pepper over.

Put second tortilla on top of cheese.

Cook for about 3 minutes until the bottom tortilla is crisp and golden

underneath. Check by lifting the edge of the tortilla with a spatula.

Slide spatula under tortilla and carefully flip over the whole

quesadilla. Cook for a further 2 minutes until

quesadilla is golden on second side.

How many ways to say YUMMY? Make this recipe and your friends will tell you!

Quesadillas are a kind of fried sandwich from Mexico. This quesadilla is just made from cheese but you can add vegetables or herbs, like coriander, chillies, spinach, chicken or ham as well!

This recipe will make enough for one quesadilla cut into 8 wedges.

Now comes the FUN part! (More adult help required!)

Carefully slide the quesadilla onto a large chopping board and cut in quarters so that you have four pieces. Then cut each quarter into half to make 8 wedges.

Pile the quesadilla wedges onto a plate and serve straight away with the salsa, guacamole and yoghurt. To find out how to make these just check out the Brilliant Book of Easy Recipes. In a library near you!

Pom Pom Monsters Your pom pom monster can be simple or

complex. It’s up to you.

All you need is a pom pom maker (anything from a piece of cardboard, a cookie cutter,

or a fork, to a fancy pom pom machine.

Design your monster. Does it have one head or two? Eyes, ears, teeth, body, arms, legs,

tail, etc. Is it friendly or fierce?

Make all the parts. You might need to spend time getting the eye colour just right, or the

arms and legs the right length.

Assemble all the parts, then glue them in

place. Of course, monsters don’t have their body parts in the same order as we do!

Now, try to frighten your granny!
