It’s been a rollercoaster couple of weeks for the Red Bulls. First up, there was the emotional high of New York’s triumph at the Emirates Cup tournament in London. Taking on, and eventually beating, such legends as Paris Saint-Germain and hosts Arsenal to the tournament title was a huge success for the Red Bulls and a major landmark in the club’s history. That victory, though, was followed up by the low of a regular season defeat by Real Salt Lake last weekend. As coach Hans Backe explains inside, the team now needs to up its game and they get the chance to do just that this evening against the Chicago Fire, who, despite its league position, is always a difficult team to beat. The Fire has been bolstered by some new signings too, so will represent a tough challenge tonight. However, with your support, the Red Bulls can bounce back and get back to the kind of truly special form that led to glory in London!

Real tough time at Rio tinto Juan Agudelo (top) upends Will Johnson of Real Salt Lake during a combative second half against Real Salt Lake last weekend. The Red Bulls had upped their game in the second period after falling behind, but despite battling hard, as Thierry Henry (above) demonstrates against Andy Williams, it wasn’t enough and the New York side left the Rio Tinto with no points after a 3-0 defeat.

two great results in london were followed by some sloppy mls errors, says hans backe

cup of joy has

we are going to reach the playoffs, we need to clean up our game.

it’s been a hectic few months for us and fortunately, we are done with the hardest part of our

schedule travel-wise. for the rest of the season, we only have four

road games, and we no longer have to fly out to the west coast.

with six games left here at red bull arena, i am fully expecting us to solidify our playoff position and get our game to where it needs to be heading into the mls Cup playoffs.

we haven’t been good enough over the past few weeks and there

are many teams fighting with us for a

continued support and enjoy tonight’s match.

good evening and welcome back to red bull arena for tonight’s match. our opponent tonight is the Chicago fire, a team that, despite their standing in the eastern Conference, is always a tough opponent.

we learned earlier this season when we played them in Chicago that they are a quality side. they also have recently brought in pavel pardo, who grabbed a goal on his debut, and who is a great addition to their club.

a couple of weekends ago, we were able to get two massive results in london and win the emirates Cup. to be able to compete with paris saint-germain and arsenal the way we did was very impressive for our club. to shutout psg and fight back to earn a draw away to arsenal speaks volumes about the character of our team. we defended very well over the two days.

unfortunately, we had a very disappointing result against real salt lake in league play last weekend. we did not look like we had very much energy and we made a number of unforced errors. we were very sloppy and if

two midfield tickets right next to the owners’ box,” Caccese said. “The view was incredible!”

The atmosphere for the match against arsenal was memorable and 60,000 people singing and chanting in unison, Caccese wondered what would happen if Thierry henry scored against arsenal, where he is still an icon. he asked a local fan and was told that “the place would go absolutely nuts!”

henry didn’t score, but he was a main contributor in the red Bulls’ victory, combining with roy miller to force the arsenal own-goal that sealed a 1-1 tie and the championship for the red Bulls. when the final whistle sounded, the crowd did go nuts, but in an unexpected way. Two angry fans headed Caccese’s way, but not with any ill will toward him in mind.

“They passed by us and proceeded to lean over the railing and yell at the team’s owners and directors,” he said. “i love the passion of these fans!”

The couple stayed to watch the red Bulls accept the emirates

Cup trophy and then watched henry take a lap of honor around the field, saluting the arsenal fans, who still

idolize him. The trip was

something Caccese will never forget, a once in a lifetime

experience, especially as the red Bulls came home with the emirates Cup!

it started as an ordinary day for richard Caccese. The staten island, nY native was at work, driving his street sweeper on manhattan’s upper west side for new York City’s department of sanitation. Then he received a voice mail from the new York red Bulls that transformed his day completely.

The message informed him that he was the winner of the red Bulls’ emirates Cup sweepstakes. he and a guest were headed to london to see the red Bulls take on paris saint-germain and arsenal.

“i actually slammed on the brakes and stopped the broom,” Caccese said of his reaction to the news. “i listened to it again and said: ‘unbelievable! me?’”

richard and girlfriend sally traveled to london and on friday, June 29 were at arsenal’s training facility to watch the red Bulls practice. after the session, the couple got to chat with some of the players, including Tim ream and dax mcCarty.

The next day, at the tournament itself, the couple picked up their upper-level corner seats and watched the red Bulls upend paris saint-germain. But on sunday, for the title game against arsenal, they got a seat upgrade.

“on sunday, we picked up our tickets at the media office, and we received

Back in 2007, a glorious few minutes against the chicago fire saw Jozy Altidore and JuAn PAblo Angel write themsleves into cluB history

record breakers fire up red bulls

May 24, 2007 – giants Stadiumnew york red bulls 3-0 Chicago Fire earlier this season, against the houston dynamo on may 21, dane richards wrote himself into the red Bulls’ record books when he scored just 39 seconds into the match.

while richards’ strike was the fastest in the side’s history, it wasn’t by much. indeed, he was just 16 seconds quicker off the mark than the previous record holder, Jozy altidore, who, against the chicago fire in 2007, scored one of the most memorable goals in club history.

then just 17 years old, altidore’s 55-second strike took shape when Juan Pablo angel took the ball downfield where he spotted John wolyniec with his back to the net. angel clipped the ball to wolyniec, who then immediately fired it towards altidore. the young striker wasted no time and ripped the ball into the back of the net.

the irony of altidore’s goal is that the record-setting strike would never have happened had todd dunivant not been injured during training, a loss that prompted head coach Bruce arena to start altidore at left midfield.

Just moments after the 17-year-old’s wonder goal, the red Bulls set another scoring record when the fire’s cJ Brown failed to clear a richards cross. the error allowed angel to pounce and the colombian rifled a shot to the back of the net on the 2:22 mark. the altidore

and angel scores meant new york eclipsed dc united for the fastest two goals in mls history.

after an adrenaline-fueled first few minutes, the game settled down as the red Bulls consolidated and the fire attempted to recover from the double blow. no further goals came in the first half but as the teams trooped off at the break it seemed clear that, with a 2-0 lead, the red Bulls were well on their way to a fifth victory of the season.

when the second half began, chicago began to finally string some passes together and the new york goal came under attack. red Bulls ’keeper Jon conway provided new york’s backline with a steady presence, however, and every shot was easily cleared by the redoubtable ’keeper.

noticing that a swing in momentum could be occurring, angel tried to change the pace by utilizing the free attacking style that arena had been constantly preaching to his red Bulls.

in the 69th minute, angel took the ball from just outside the six-yard box and pulled a nifty feint, which sent chicago’s chris armas sprawling. angel then only had to tap the ball past chicago goalkeeper matt Pickens.

angel’s second goal of the match moved the score line to 3-0, which was all the red Bulls would need in order to ensure victory and to move their record to an impressive 5-1-2 mark.

staying powerdane richards has seen almost everything in his five seasons as a red bull, but as the lightning-fast forward heads for his best ever season there’s one thing left on his must-see list – an mls cup title...

as a squad member of the new york red bulls, dane richards has nearly seen it all.

he was there in 2007, when the team brought in its first designated players claudio reyna and Juan pablo angel. in 2008, he helped carry the team to its first ever mls cup finals berth with a scintillating playoff performance. and then came 2009, the season richards has tried hard to erase from his mind.

red bull arena arrived in 2010, bringing with it a new era, a new regime and of course new superstars. now in his fifth year with the club, there isn’t much that the second-longest tenured red bull has missed. but he’s quick to point out the biggest omission from his résumé; an mls cup championship. he simply and succinctly says of his career so far, “i haven’t won any mls cups yet, so it’s not excellent.”

a lot has changed over the past five major league soccer seasons, and specifically for the red bulls, but richards has always been there, his blazing speed on display up and down the right flank. he’s endured three full-time coaches in five seasons, starting with bruce arena in 2007, when he first was selected by the team. there were the ups and downs of Juan carlos osorio’s reign in 2008 and part of 2009. now, richards lauds his current coach hans backe, who has, he says, brought a new stability

and organization to the club over the past few years.

“hans likes to play football, you know,” richards says. “we’re a passing team, we try to keep composure on the ball. whenever we’re dangerous we tend to get a lot of goals.”

the threat of the red bulls’ attack is at its height when the Jamaican speedster is on his game. throughout his career, richards has often showed those flashes of fleet-footed brilliance. his outstanding performance in the second leg of the 2008 western conference semifinals against the houston dynamo immediately springs to mind. richards played a part in all three goals that day in texas and was undoubtedly the best player on the

field. the red bulls never get to an mls cup final without him.

last season, after a sub-par start to the season by his standards, richards turned it on down the stretch, helping to propel the red bulls to the eastern conference regular season crown. having registered just a single assist and no goals in his first 17 outings in 2010, richards suddenly caught fire and in his final eight games he scored five goals and set up two more.

but richards deflects any praise and insists that he is still looking for ways to improve. “i just want to be consistent. not hot-cold, hot-cold,“ he says emphatically.

he seems to have found the consistency he so sought. richards is

on pace to have, statistically, his most productive season as a professional. while he missed some time with the red bulls in the middle of the year, representing Jamaica at the concacaf gold cup, but he has produced whenever he has suited up for the new york side. in his first 17 appearances this season, richards scored three goals and notched five assists. prolific play and such an attacking threat from the Jamaican could be a key factor if the red bulls are to make a run for the mls cup that richards so desires.

“what we need to do is win some games and get in the playoffs, and we can take it from there”, he says. “because in the playoffs anything can

happen. we proved that back in ’08.”and richards feels that the current

squad has the ability to do something special this season. but, while he brands this year’s red bulls the most talented group of players he’s been part of, he is quick to point out that talent alone rarely translates into wins and that hard work and production between the lines are essential.

“on paper we are unbelievable,” he said. “we just need to put it together on the field and we’ll be dangerous.”

if the red bulls do play to their potential, richards feels he will finally get that elusive mls cup. if he indeed raises that trophy with his teammates at the end of the year, he will have truly seen everything.

An attacking Rihcards is upended by Bruno Guarda of FC Dallas during the sides’ recent clash at Red Bull Arena.

We make things bloom. New Jersey’s future success depends on our ability to

effectively manage the need for environmental protection with the need for a growing

economy. At PSEG, we’re committed to both. For three decades, we’ve been working

to reduce the environmental impact of our own operations and working with others

to achieve effective, innovative solutions to today’s environmental issues. We’re

committed to reducing our carbon footprint through investments in renewable energy,

efficient central power generation and energy efficiency measures. And, through

investments in our customers and communities we’re helping them reduce their carbon

footprint as well. Balancing economic development and environmental protection is

critical to creating a better, healthier world for our children. It’s one way in which we’re

making things bloom in New Jersey.

Started in 2006, the Student of the Game program is a club partnership designed to strengthen ties between the Red Bulls and the area’s youth soccer organizations. The program includes discounted tickets to Red Bulls home matches and several unique experiences including Center Circle Banner and an opportunity to watch warm-ups on the field prior to a match. Other benefits, including Player Appearances and Player Clinics, will be hosted by the club at its facility for its members. There are also

opportunities to host special events at Red Bull Arena or enjoy discounted menu options for tailgates in our hospitality bays. The Student of the Game partnership has limited availability for the 2011 season. If you would like information on how to get your club involved with the Student of the Game program this season, or for other great opportunities for your soccer club at a Red Bulls match this year, please call 1.877.RBSOCCER or visit the Fan Services tables located on the concourse.

Revs on the rise? It’s tough being a Revs fan at the moment. A dismal start to the season saw them win just four games from their first 14 outings and things haven’t improved much since then, with just one more win to add to their tally since, a 3-2 loss to Chivas USA last weekend being the latest blow suffered.

So where do the problems lie? Well there are ailments at both ends of the pitch, but its in offense that the major troubles are being felt. Sure, the Revs’ defense has let in 33 goals so far but that statistic would be largely irrelevant if the team had been banging in goals at the other end. The opposite is the case however. The Revs have scored just 22 times in its 23 games so far and have the second worst shots-on-goal record in the league, registering just 80 attempts compared with the Red Bulls’ 108. From those 108 shots New York has also scored 38 times, the best scoring record in MLS. On the evidence of the Revs’ recent record New York should get a shot at a clean sheet at Gillette Stadium.

Having said that, New England, despite last week’s defeat, is improving. A three-game unbeaten road swing against DC United, the Colorado Rapids and Sporting Kansas City will have given the team confidence, as coach Steve Nicol pointed out. “We haven’t had the results we wanted, but the effort has always been the same and the attitude has always been the same,” he said. “Eventually and deservedly so, we’re beginning to get some reward for it.”

The only thing that may dent that confidence is a mounting injury list. A number of first team players have been sidelined in recent weeks and Nicol has struggled to field a full team. That’s debilitating and the sort of thing that saps any team’s will to win.

LAST TIME OUT THE RED BULLS HANDED THE new england Revolution A 2-1 DEFEAT. HOW WILL NEW YORK FARE WHEN THEY MEET THE REvS AT GILLETTE STADIUM?

revved up to fight the revolution

Key PlayerIt may be predictable but it’s hard to ignore the always influential Shalrie Joseph. The Revs have struggled to find the net but when they do discover their touch in front of goal it’s usually Joseph charting the course. He’s scored six goals this season and while, admittedly, three have come from the penalty spot, Joseph is the player keeping New England ticking over at the moment.

ForecastThe Revs have improved in recent weeks but their injury woes don’t inspire much confidence. The Red Bulls, on the other hand, will have been given a big boost by their Emirates Cup win and though they looked weary against RSL last week they will be determined to carry some of that positive energy into the regular season. Look for the Red Bulls to return home with all three points.

from malcolm dixon just before the halftime whistle.

new york took the lead early in the second half when defender Tyler pinho won a penalty after being taken down in the box. malcolm dixon stepped up to put his team 2-1 ahead. The penalty galvanized new york, who created some good chances to put the game out of reach, but they couldn’t make them count. with 10 minutes to go, their profligacy came back to haunt them after chivas scored a penalty of their own. but the red bulls responded, stephen elias scoring off a set piece to give new york a 3-2 lead and the cup.

“we have a talented group of players in this age group,” Zaun said of the win. “i think it says a lot about the depth of our talent pool when we can send seven players to a national team camp and at the same time send the rest of the team to a prestigious tournament and win it going against the other mls academies.”

The new york red bulls u-15 squad traveled to dallas, Texas last week to test themselves against other top mls academy teams in the 2011 generation adidas cup. new york passed, with flying colors, compiling a 2-0-1 record in the group stages before posting a 3-2 victory in the final against chivas usa’s u-15s to win the trophy.

“we are very happy for the players and the academy,” u-15 head coach Jeff Zaun said. “This is a great tournament to win.”

new york came to the tournament without the services of seven players who were away at the us u-15 national team training camp in los angeles. as such the red bulls got off to a slow start, with a 0-0 tie against the seattle sounders, but in the next game new york started strong and controlled the match against the houston dynamo, dante perez scoring both goals in a 2-0 win. The victory put the red bulls on top of the group, tied for first with the la galaxy. The match between the table-toppers would determine the group winner as well as chivas usa’s opponent in the title decider.

The red bulls came out flying, an early goal from malcolm dixon giving them a 1-0 lead. Joe swenson scored before halftime to make it 2-0, but la pulled one back just after the break. before any more damage could be done, however, stephen elias scored two stunning goals to give the red bulls a 4-1 win and a place in the final.

in the 25th minute of the title decider, chivas got behind the red bulls defense off a long kick from the goalkeeper and took a 1-0 lead, but the red bulls quickly responded with a good goal
