After a historic year during which transmission ofthe wild poliovirus vanished from Nigeria and the

continent of Africa, the crippling disease is closerthan ever to being eradicated worldwide, said tophealth experts at Rotary’s third annual World PolioDay event on 23 October in New York City.

More than 150 people attended the spe-cial Livestream program co-sponsored by UNICEF,and thousands more around the world watchedonline. Jeffrey Kluger, Time magazine’s editor atlarge, moderated the event.

Anthony Lake, executive director of UNICEF,

lauded the Global Polio Eradication Initiative’ s ef-forts. After nearly 30 years, the GPEI, which in-cludes Rotary, the World Health Organization, UNI-CEF, and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Pre-vention (CDC), and is supported by the Bill &Melinda Gates Foundation, is on the cusp of endingpolio. It would be only the second human diseaseever to be eradicated.

Lake urged the partners not to lose their momen-tum: “At a time when the world is torn by conflicts, when the bonds among people seem weaker and

more frayed than ever before, ending polio will benot only one of humanity’s greatest achievements, but a singular and striking example of what can beachieved when diverse partners are driven by acommon goal -- when we act as one,” he said.

The event highlighted recent milestones in polioeradication: In July, Nigeria marked one year with-out a case, and in August, the entire African conti-nent celebrated one year without an outbreak.

That leaves just two countries where the virus isregularly spreading: Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In a question-and-answer session with Kluger, Dr.John Vertefeuille, polio incident manager for theCDC, discussed the reasons for Nigeria’s success, including strong political commitment at all levelsand the support and engagement of religious andcommunity leaders.

“The foundation to Nigeria’s success has been theincredible dedication of tens of thousands of healthworkers who have worked, often in difficult cir-cumstances, to ensure that all children are reached

with the polio vaccine,” said Vertefeuille. Innovative changes, including strategies for reach-ing children who were often missed in the past, better mechanisms for ensuring the accountabilityof health workers, and the engagement of doctors,

journalists, and polio survivors, also aided Nigeriain reaching its goal.

Polio eradication is progressing in Afghanistan andPakistan. In Afghanistan, cases dropped from 28 in2014 to 13 so far this year. In Pakistan, transmis-

sion of the disease dropped dramatically, from 306cases to 38.

Kluger and Vertefeuille agreed that eradicating po-lio is a wise financial investment. Vertefeuille saidfinancial savings of $50 billion are projected overthe next 20 years.

Failure to eradicate polio, he noted, could result ina global resurgence of the disease, with 200,000new cases every single year within 10 years.

Growing “shed movement” among Rotary clubs in Australia, UK & Cana

From the November 2015 issue of  The Rotarian

Left with a deep emotional void after the loss

of his wife four years ago, Ron Bowden discov-ered the perfect respite, a place filled with the

whirring of buzz saws, the clanking of

wrenches, and the listening ears of a band of

     brothers: his local men’s shed.

An Australian phenomenon, the sheds are

communal buildings equipped for light car-

pentry and other woodworking, bicycle repairs,

or leatherwork, where men (women are wel-come too) gather to tinker and socialize. Bow-

den, now a member of the Rotary Club of

    Toowoomba East, Australia, initially whiled

away time at a shed sponsored by the Rotary

Club of Mt. Gravatt in Brisbane before moving

to Toowoomba, where he and Past District

    Governor Phillip Charles helped establish

Toowoomba City Men’s Shed Inc., which ope

ates two such structures on the grounds of lo

    cal churches.

Rotary clubs have helped ratchet up the men

shed movement; Australia now has over 1,00

and more are coming in Great Britain, Irelan

and Canada. People can join for a nominal

membership fee; honor boxes fund expenses

such as tea and coffee. In 2007, during its sec

ond convention (held in a Sydney suburb

named Manly, naturally), the Australian Men

Shed Association drafted its motto from a lin

in a speech: “Men don’t talk face to face, they

talk shoulder to shoulder.” Bowden concurs:

“If the men have any problems, then they can

talk about them. Ten minutes later, they’ll be

     working.”

    Dengue Prevention

This photograph shows a mother applying mosquito re-

pellent to her child’s skin in order to prevent mosquitoes

    from biting.

How to reduce your risk of dengue infection:There is no vaccine available against dengue, and there are no specific medicationsto treat a dengue infection. This makes prevention the most important step, and pre-vention means avoiding mosquito bites if you live in or travel to an endemic area.

The best way to reduce mosquitoes is to eliminate the places where the mosquitolays her eggs, like artificial containers that hold water in and around the home. Out-doors, clean water containers like pet and animal watering containers, flower planterdishes or cover water storage barrels. Look for standing water indoors such as invases with fresh flowers and clean at least once a week.

The adult mosquitoes like to bite inside as well as around homes, during the day andat night when the lights are on. To protect yourself, use repellent on your skin whileindoors or out. When possible, wear long sleeves and pants for additional protec-tion. Also, make sure window and door screens are secure and without holes. Ifavailable, use air-conditioning.

If someone in your house is ill with dengue, take extra pre-cautions to prevent mosquitoes from biting the patient andgoing on to bite others in the household. Sleep under a mos-quito bed net, eliminate mosquitoes you find indoors andwear repellent!

WAR vs. DENGUE:  HOW TO AVOID DENGUE

PHILIPPINE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH reports almost 92,800 dengue casesfrom January 1 to September 19, 2015, higher by 23.5% than last year.

    DOH urges public to

    always practice cleanliness,

eliminate all possible breeding places of mosquitoes, and

seek early consultation for fevers lasting over 2 days.
