Wagner College Clinic

Wagner College, in collaboration with Richmond County Baseball, held a free

clinic at the RC Complex exclusively for RCBC members on teams ages 8U-13U.

Wagner Head Coach Jim Carone and his staff and players ran the clinic with over

50 RCBC players in attendance. “It was a great experience for our players” said

Coach DeFendis, “and a chance for them to see what a college baseball workout is

all about.” For more pictures, visit Photo Albums on www.rcbclub.com.

The Hit-And-Run

I am not a fan of waiting around for things to happen. I like being aggressive and putting pressure on

opposing defenses. We normally don’t have nine batters hitting .300 in the lineup, so there are times

when we need to take advantage of the runners on base. I love utilizing the hit-and-run throughout

games, and like to make my opponent as uncomfortable as possible when on defense. Stealing a base

involves putting the defense in motion, and this is what adds an extra layer of difficulty.

The hit-and-run puts pressure on the pitcher, catcher and the rest of the defense, and also creates oppor-

tunities for the offense. I prefer to utilize it in a hitter’s count (0-0, 1-0, 2-0, 3-1) when the batter is more

likely to see a fastball. A tip is to choke up and, if you are right-handed, you’re looking to go opposite

field. If you’re left-handed, then shoot for the six hole. The goal is to go against whichever middle

infielder is most likely to break for the bag. But don’t force it. If the ball is inside, pull it. The batter is

supposed to protect the runner at all costs. You must swing the bat in this situation, no matter if the ball

is high, way outside, or in the dirt. The worst case scenario should be a swing and miss with the runner

ending up on second, or runners on second and third if the play was called with two on.

This is a team play for the hitter, and he needs to protect the runner at all costs. The runner’s job is to

get a good primary lead with the mindset that he is stealing a base and hopefully advancing to third.

While in motion, on the third step, you should be peaking in to locate the ball to see if contact was made

or not. If it was, the runner is now responsible for finding the ball. If it is behind him, he is looking to

the third base coach for a stop sign. If not, he is heading to third base. If the ball is in front of the

runner, in center or left field, he needs to decide whether to advance. Base running should be aggressive;

the goal is to be on third base, and you should hit the inside of second base on the turn. The closer you

are to home, the better chance you have to score. It’s that simple.

I like to recommend using the play in rally situations, when the pitcher has just given up a couple of

runs, or when the batter is struggling. This way, he can simply focus on swinging away. Also, hold off if

a pitcher is struggling with control because you do not want to run yourself out of innings. On the other

hand, when the pitcher is dominant, that is when you may have a better opportunity, as scoring

opportunities may be less.

Players don’t need to be fast. They just need to be good base runners. I hate going station to station.

I would rather be aggressive and make something happen!
