Welcome Coffee
Thursday, September 19, 2013 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM
New Leaf Bakery
Hardesty-Higgins House and Visitor Center
212 South Main Street
Harrisonburg, VA 22801
Please join us as we renew friendships and welcome new
members to our community in this historic location. The
Hardesty-Higgins House and Visitor center is also home of the
Valley Turnpike Museum and the Harrisonburg-Rockingham
Civil War Orientation Museum.
The air has gotten crisp and although unofficial, it feels like autumn. The return of children to school
always coincides with the start of the RCMA calendar year. We had a very successful year last year:
our Holiday Wreath Sales and Holiday Market earned over $1000 and we were able to donate more
than $5000 to community including bringing the national spokesperson of “The Bullying Ends Now” to
Montevideo Middle School. (The full list of donors is listed below.) Our social events have enjoyed
greater attendance than in previous years and we plan to continue to build on our success.
We will be starting with our traditional Welcome Coffee (56th) at the New Leaf Bakery on September
19 in the Hardesty-Higgins House. We also have an opportunity to tour the Valley Turnpike Museum.
We are aware that due to work schedules, many members cannot attend our inaugural event, so we
will have an informal October Grill Fest planned where we can greet new members to our community
or sit back and enjoy a beer or hot apple cider with friends.(Sam Arthur is ordering the brats!)
The 14th Annual Holiday Crafts Market will return to Spotswood Country Club on November 14th. We
are pleased to be hosting 9 new vendors in addition to the return of some old favorites, and we are
continuing our popular wreath sales online and at the Holiday Market. We are still soliciting vendors
for the Holiday Market, so please let me or Kathy Lareau know if there is a vendor we should consider.
In addition to dispersing philanthropic funds at the end of the year to the community, we will continue
supplying SAVE (“Hands Are Not for Hitting” and “I Can Handle Bullies”) materials to area schools. We
have been supplying SAVE materials for a decade.
We hope that many of you will be able to join us at some the events we have planned. Martha
Waligora and Kathy Kollman, assisted by other board members, have been busy these past few weeks
updating our data base and directory so the directory will be available at the Welcome Coffee to paid
members. Debbie Reilly, Kathy Lareau, and Debbie York have spent the summer developing an
exciting Holiday Market for November and Beth Nelsen will be managing wreath sales again this year.
Dawn Kern is investigating an evening at Bluestone Vineyards for the spring and we are revamping
our Girls Night Out with an evening of wine, cheese, and chocolate. Guy’s Night will continue with Beer
and Brats in February and RCMA will be hosting its 4th annual Chili, Beer, and Bonfire. I am looking
forward to seeing some of you this week!
Sincerely, Gail Arthur, RCMA Chair
