    Rules for the Ethics in Finance - Robin Cosgrove Prize

    ObjectivesThe Ethics in Finance - Robin Cosgrove Prize aims to encourage and

    promote: (a) Awareness of the fundamental role of ethics in the world of finance; (b)Precise identification of ethical issues in financial activities and institutions, in boththe public and private sectors; (c) Implementation of initiatives and projects

    concerning teaching and legislating for ethics in finance.Candidates are invited to submit written papers that have not been previously

    published that examine the role of ethics in finance, especially taking account of thethree aspects of the question mentioned above. The papers could be analytical incharacter or they could be proposals for practical projects. In all cases, they shouldmeet three criteria: intellectual rigour, innovative ideas, and clear conclusions. Themaximum permitted length of the papers is 5,000 words or up to 30,000 characters,including spaces and annexes.

    Jury

    The Jury has been delegated by the Organisers with the task of selecting themost meritorious contributions from the eligible candidates and of designating theprizewinners.

    The Jury is composed of eminent persons who sit in their private capacity on apro bono basis. The members of the Jury are also active in financial institutions aswell as in the academic world, the media, non-governmental organisations, andregulatory agencies.

    The Jury will deal with the papers on an anonymous and confidential basis.The Jury will work in two stages: first, it will select a restricted number of contributionsto be nominated for the Prize, and secondly it will designate one or more

    prizewinners and allocate the sum of USD20,000 between them.Decisions of the Jury are definitive and no appeal will be permitted. The Jury's

    methodology remains confidential and will not be divulged.

    The Jury reserves the right not to award the Prize.

    The Prize SecretariatThe Observatoire de la Finance is the Secretariat for the Prize. It coordinates

    the work of the Jury, distributes information, takes charge of the website and, for thecandidates, it is the sole interface with the Prize, excluding any personal contact withmembers of the Jury.

    The Application DossierTo be eligible, candidates must be persons aged, at the oldest, 35 years (born

    after 1 April 1976). Contributions from more than one author are eligible on conditionthat all the authors meet the age criteria.

    Texts should be submitted either in English or in French, the two officiallanguages of the Prize. In the event that the original paper is written in anotherlanguage, this version may also be attached to the application.

    Candidates are required to use the "Expression of Interest" form on the

    website in order to establish a contact with the secretariat, in advance of submission.The application dossier should comprise the following:

    the Official application form completed and signed ;

    a copy of an official and valid identity document showing the date of birthand a recent photograph (for all authors);

    the text in English or French, formatted according to the instructions given;

    if a translation is submitted, the text in the original language may beattached;

    a signed declaration by the author(s) stipulating that they wholly own the

    rights relative to the text and that it is free of any plagiarism;

    a declaration renouncing temporarily the publication of the text submitted forthe Prize and a commitment to cede to the organisers the right to publish thetext in English or in French as an original publication, in the event that the textwere to be selected by the Jury;

    an authorisation to publish the name and photograph of the candidate in theevent that they are prizewinners, as part of the promotion of the Prize.

    The complete application dossier must reach the secretariat of the Prize by nolater than 31 of March 2011 Application dossiers will not be returned.

    Previous nominees and winners conditionsWinners of previous editions of the Robin Cosgrove Prize could not take part

    in the Prize anymore.

    Nominees, people whose papers were selected by the Jury for the final roundand whose names was published on the Prizes website, can participate again.However, they are requested to submit a new paper on a different subject.

    Announcement of the PrizeThe nominees will be informed during autumn 2011. The prizewinners will be

    announced at a special ceremony to be held late 2011.

    The winning texts will be published in the Journal "Finance & the Common

    Good/Bien Commun".

    Applicable law and jurisdictionThe present Rules and the awarding of the Robin Cosgrove Prize are subject

    to Swiss law. In the case of litigation between a candidate and the organisers of thePrize, the place of jurisdiction for all legal action is Geneva, subject to an eventualappeal to the Federal Tribunal at Lausanne.

    Participation in the Prize competition indicates that candidates accept theserules.
