RCSI AND RCPI LICENTIATES

The sister colleges of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and RoyalCollege of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) are honoured to ask today’s graduands torecite the following declaration. These historical licentiates commenced in 1886when the Medical Act of 1886 recommended that the various medical licensingbodies in Ireland joined together to award diplomas covering medicine, surgeryand midwifery, as all three were required for medical registration. As a result of the1886 Medical Act the Conjoint Board was established by RCSI and RCPI, and thelicences of both Colleges were awarded together for the first time. Each Collegehad its own declaration to be made by those obtaining its licence, so that to thisday the declaration of the RCSI and the declaration of the RCPI are made bythose becoming Licentiates of both RCSI and RCPI. The declaration today is anaffirmation regarding the Licentiate’s future observance and demeanour and is animportant part of admittance into the profession of medicine.

THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS IN IRELAND & THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS IN IRELAND - MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF BAHRAIN LICENTIATEThis is the traditional declaration of RCSI and RCSI Bahrain for those receiving a licentiate to practise as medical practitioners in RCSI and RCSI Bahrain.“I, .............., do hereby solemnly and sincerely declare and promise that I will observe and be obedient to the Statutes, Bye-Laws, and Ordinances of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland & the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Medical University of Bahrain and that I will, to the utmost of my power, endeavour to promote the reputation, honour, and dignity of the said College & University.”

THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS OF IRELAND LICENTIATEThis is the traditional declaration of RCPI for those receiving a licentiate to practise as medical practitioners in RCSI.“I, .............., do hereby solemnly and sincerely promise and affirm, that I will observe the Statutes, Bye-Laws, and Ordinances of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, and that I will, to the utmost of my power, endeavour to preserve the honour and reputation of the College.”

DECLARATIONS

The RCSI Graduates Declaration is a commitment to the highest standards of professionalism and ethical practice in your career, as taught during your studies here at RCSI. It was developed by consensus among students, based on the traditions of the Hippocratic Oath. It is a common oath read by graduands of all of our undergraduate health professional programmes and all postgraduate practitioner and research degrees. We ask that graduands make the declaration publically in the presence of your faculty, fellow graduands, family and friends.

Graduates Declaration » I will practice my profession with conscience and dignity. » The health of my patient will be my first concern. » I will maintain the utmost respect for human life. » I will remember that there is art to my profession, as well as science, and that warmth,

empathy, and understanding may outweigh treatment alone. » I will respect the confidential information that is entrusted in me, even after a patient has

died. » I will not permit considerations of age, disease or disability, creed, ethnic origin, gender,

nationality, political affiliation, race, sexual orientation, social standing or any other factor to intervene between my duty and my patient.

» I will not use my professional knowledge to violate human rights and civil liberties, even under threat.

» I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge with those that follow.

» I will abide by the code of conduct of my profession and I will promote high standards of practice, life-long education and research in the interest of human health.

» I make these promises solemnly, freely and upon my honour.

THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS IN IRELAND – MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF BAHRAIN

Having first opened our doors to 28 medicine students in 2004, under license from the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain, a vibrant school of Nursing and Midwifery admitted its first cohort of students in October 2006 and RCSI Bahrain now has a student population of almost 1,300 from 40 countries around the world.

In February 2009, a purpose built university campus adjacent to the King Hamad University Hospital, was opened by the then President of Ireland Mary McAleese and the late His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.

The role of the university is to provide healthcare education and training to world standards in Bahrain, drawing students from Bahrain, the other GCC countries and beyond.

THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS OF IRELAND (RCPI)

Beginning in 1564 as a Fraternity of Physicians, in 1667 the College was granted a Royal Charter by Charles II. The roll of the College includes the names of such famous Irish medical men as John Stearne, Sir Patrick Dun, John Cheyne, Robert Graves, William Stokes and Sir Dominic Corrigan.

Associated with RCSI in the conjoint Board, the College plays an active part in education and examination of undergraduate medical students. In its postgraduate professional role it is responsible for teaching, examining and training in the medical specialities and associated disciplines.
