Mendeley
What is Mendeley?
Mendeley is a free reference management with web-based, desktop and mobile versions where
you can store, organise, highlight and annotate all your PDFs and references.
Please note that Mendeley is not officially supported by the Library so we may not be able
to resolve any difficulties you have with this software.

1 Getting started
1.1 Register and download Mendeley
1. Go to http://www.mendeley.com/ Click on
2. Once registered you will be prompted to download Mendeley Desktop
1.2 Download the ‘web importer’
1. Go to http://www.mendeley.com/import/
2. Install, download or add the bookmarklet to
your bookmarks / favourites, depending on what
browser you are using
1.2 Install the Word plug-in
1. Close any Word documents you have open
2. In Mendeley, click Tools and Install MS Word Plugin
3. Once installed, the Mendeley ‘Cite-O-Matic’ tool will appear in the References tab in
Word

1.3 Choose your citation style
1. In Mendeley, click View and Citation Style
2. In the drop-down click More Styles
3. A pop-up window will appear
4. Click on the Get More Styles tab and search for the citation style you want to use, for
example Cardiff University Harvard

2 Adding references to your library
2.1 Adding references using PDFs
Add PDFs to your Mendeley library simply by dragging and dropping the file into Mendeley.
This will automatically create a reference in your Mendeley library.
2.2 Creating a watch folder to automatically add PDFs to
Mendeley Desktop
When you place a document in a watch folder, it will be automatically added to Mendeley so
you can annotate, cite, and browse its references. Adding files to Mendeley using watch folders
makes it easier to add multiple papers in one go and keep them where you want on your
computer.

2.3 Synchronise PDFs with your Mendley Web account
If you want to have access to your PDFs from anywhere, activate the file synchronization
feature. By enabling this feature you are able to access your PDF files in your Mendeley Web
library.
1. Make sure that “All Documents” in the “My Library” pane is selected
2. Select Edit Settings
3. Adjust the settings to your needs
4. Click Sync & save
5. Login to your Mendeley Web account and see the results in your library

2.4 Adding references from the following databases:
EBSCO databases (includes: CINAHL, ERIC, British Education Index)
PubMed
Google Scholar
LibrarySearch and Articles&More
Web of Science
1. Run your search in the
database. When the results are
displayed, click on the
Mendeley web importer (this
may look slightly different
depending on what browser you
are using) and log in if
prompted
2. Either choose to export all the
references shown on the page,
or select certain references
3. Click Save

2.5 Adding references from Proquest databases (includes:
British Nursing Index)
1. Tick the Checkbox next to each article
2. Click Save
3. Click RIS (works with EndNote, Citavi, etc.)
4. Click Continue
5. A file will download, select to save the file
6. In Mendeley, click File, Import
and RIS – Research
Information Systems.
7. Browse to find the file you
saved, click Open
8. The reference(s) will be added
to your Mendeley library

2.6 Adding references from OVID databases (includes: Medline, EMBASE, PsycInfo)
1. Tick the Checkbox next to each article
2. Click Export
3. Select RIS
4. Select Complete Reference
5. Click Export Citation(s)
6. A file will download, select to
save the file
7. In Mendeley, click File,
Import and RIS – Research
Information Systems.
8. Browse to find the file you
saved, click Open
9. The reference(s) will be
added to your Mendeley
library

2.7 Adding references from Scopus
1. Tick the Checkbox next to each article
2. Click Export
3. Select Save to Mendeley
4. Click Export
5. Login if prompted
6. If you are sent to the web version
of Mendeley, return to the desktop and sync

3 Using Mendeley within Word
3.1 Adding a citation to Word
1. Place the cursor where you want the citation
2. Click the References tab
3. In the Mendeley Cite-O-Matic toolbar click Insert Citation
4. Search for an author or keyword
5. Choose the correct reference and click OK
6. The citation will appear in the text

3.2 Amending or adding page numbers to a citation
1. Place the cursor in the citation. Where it previously said Insert Citation, it should now
change to Edit Citation
2. Click Edit Citation
3. Click on the author/date of the citation in the search box
4. Add pages etc. using the pop-up and click OK

3.3 Creating a bibliography
1. Once you have added citations to your document, place the cursor where you want to
insert the bibliography
2. In the Mendeley toolbar, click on Insert Bibliography
