HISTORYThe University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech)dates its beginning from 1958, originally as theJamaica Institute of Technology. In 1959 the nameof the institution was changed to the College ofArts, Science and Technology and it becameincorporated in the College of Arts, Science andTechnology (CAST) Scheme of 1959. This wasvalidated by an ACT of Parliament in 1964. In1986, the CAST Scheme was revised in order tomake the College a degree-granting institution, andthe College became legally empowered to conductaffairs under a governing Council and AcademicBoard.

The institution was formally accorded Universitystatus on September 1, 1995 as the University ofTechnology, Jamaica. The University ofTechnology, Jamaica Act 27-1999, which makespermanent provisions for the establishment of theUniversity of Technology, Jamaica was approvedby Parliament on June 8, 1999 and signed into lawby the Governor General on June 19, 1999.

The history of the institution is intimately connectedwith the social and economic development ofJamaica. From just over 50 students and fourprogrammes in 1958, UTech has grown to becomeJamaica’s premier national institution with astudent population of over 11,000. It now offersmore than 70 programmes at the certificate, diploma and degree levels through its five facultiesand two colleges. The University has furtherexpanded access to its programme offerings tomeet the demands of business and industry byestablishing campuses and satellite locationsacross Jamaica. In addition, several programmesare franchised through links with communitycolleges, and most programmes are linked tonational and international professionalorganisations.

Syllabuses are modeled on the English polytechnicsystem, with emphasis on flexibility of approach

work-based learning and professional linkagesafforded through co-operative work basedprogrammes. Flexibility in the University’sacademic programmes is reflected in the variousmodes of course delivery, which include theestablishment of a Semesterised mode of deliveryintroduced in academic year 1999/2000 and furtheradjusted and piloted in 2009-2010. Under theSystem, the academic year was restructured intothree academic sessions and all courses of studymodularized. Several credit and non credit coursesare offered during the Summer Session from mid-May to August.

Franchise and Outreach InstitutionsFive national community colleges (Brown’s Town,Excelsior, Montego Bay, Portmore and Knox) havefranchise arrangements with the University. Underthis arrangement, first and/or second years ofundergraduate degree courses in the College ofBusiness & Management and Faculty ofEngineering & Computing may be pursued at theseinstitutions. The University also operates anOutreach Centre at Portmore Community Collegeand National Tools and Engineering Institute(NTEI).
