2004 and up Maxima/Quest/Altima with an RE5F22A transaxle in failsafe, the check engine light is on with no transmission codes stored. No access to transmission data available on the scan tool. Code P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor (Phase) Circuit Bank 1 (part # 23731-6J90B) or P0345 Bank 2 (part # 23731-AL61A) is stored. The Camshaft position sensor is a 3 wire Hall Effect type (fi gure 1). Nissan technical service bulletin (TSB)# NTB04-063 refers to problems with both camshaftposition sensors with a complaint of a hard start condition when warm or cold. No information about the transmission being in failsafe.

Standard diagnostic procedure; address any engine codes before trying to diagnose a transmission problem. Especially important for transmission shift adaptive strategies that depend on engineoperation. There is no written information to document this issue. Only information found in thefactory manual is a transmission code for engine RPM input (P0726) (fi gure 2) failsafe mode 1. Failsafe mode chart in fi gure 3 verifi es that the transmission would be in high gear with all pressure solenoids off.

Step 1: Ground check; voltage drop check on the ground terminal (fi gure 4) should be approximately 0.1 volt or less. Repair as needed.Step 2: 12 volt supply from ECM relay; back probe sensor pin 3 (fi gure 5). if ok go to next step if not check voltage at relay using wire the diagrams in fi gures 6 and 7. Repair as needed. Step 3: Sensor signal (DC Hertz); back probe pin 2 (fi gure 8), if ok check signal at ECM. No signal at ECM, check circuit for an open or short. Repair as needed. No signal at pin 2, go to next step.

Step 4: Connector pin voltage; check voltage supply on pin 3 with the harness disconnected (fi gure 9) if ok, check connection (loose pin, bent etc.), go to next step. No voltage repair wiring or replace connector retest.

Step 5: Sensor resistance; With harness disconnected check resistance from Camshaft Positionsensor pin 1 to pins 2 and 3, then from pin 2 to pin 3 (fi gure 10). The values listed in fi gure 10 are factory specifi cations. Replace as necessary.

Note: Problem may be intermittent, updated sensors have been released to address this issue.

Note: Checking resistance (ohms) as a test for no pin voltage in step 4 from the wire going into the back of pin 3 to the pin itself (fi gure 11). With only one or two strands of wire making contact, the meter reading will show continuity (no open circuit). The poor connection will not allow the proper amount of voltage fl ow (amps) to the pin itself.
