Pastor’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

The season of Lent begins this week with Ash Wednesday, the day we traditionally come to the church to receive ashes on our foreheads. Only this year the ashes will be given at the front doors of Good Shepherd, where you may also receive Holy Communion. The priests will be at the entrances to distribute the Eucharist and the Lenten ashes, but you can’t come into the church because then we would be required to take your names and contact numbers, and that’s impossible for us to do when it’s a “drive by” manner of receiving. And the ashes are given by way of a little sprinkle on the top of your head, rather than a cross on your forehead.

So keep the following in mind:

In-person Mass and other Group gatherings are currently suspended

under Provincial Health Order.

Livestream Mass Saturday 5PM Sunday 9AM Watch on YouTube: www.youtube.com/user/SOSParish followed by Drive-Up Communion for approx. 30 minutes after Mass

Ash Wednesday 9:15AM followed by distribution of Communion and Ashes 9:45AM - 10:45AM 6:30PM - 7:30AM

Live streamed Mass at 9:15am, followed by the giving of Holy Communion and Ashes at the entrance doors to Good Shepherd church

*you must park your car, walk up and receive, and then exit the parking lot.

2. 6:30 – 7:30pm: distribution of Communion and Ashes at Good Shepherd

(*confessions cancelled)

You are encouraged to follow the Mass on YouTube, come for Communion and Ashes if possible, and enter the spirit of Lent with the special discipline of fasting and abstinence from eating meat that is always part of the Ash Wednesday tradition.

Have a prayerful week.

Fr. Francis Drive-by Farewell

Dear Parishioners,

Last weekend, you would have heard that the

Archbishop has given me a new assignment, so I will be

leaving Star of the Sea Parish. The Archbishop has re-

assigned me to Holy Rosary Cathedral as Assistant Pastor

effective Feb 18th 2021. Although it was very short notice,

I am reminded what my formators emphasized when I was

in seminary - that of the spirit of priestly obedience. So, I

accept this new assignment with my whole heart. Pray for

me!

As I prepare to move to my new home, I remember the

first time I came to this parish in July of 2018. I was

immediately welcomed by you and you made it feel like

home for me for the last 2 1/2 years. Thank you for your

kindness and generosity. I met and got to know so many of

you and I will always remember you in the sharing of our

faith, praying together, celebrating mass, going to seniors

home and hospital.

My dear friends, remember Jesus is always at work in

our lives. I am humbled and grateful that He has chosen

me to become a priest and to share with you my priestly

ministry. We know that all things work together for good

for those who love God!

Thank you so much. I know I will miss you but keep me in

your prayers. And on my part, I will continue pray for you.

Why we NEED to join this campaign:

Canada is the only democratic country in

the world where it is legal to abort a baby

any time during the 9 months of

pregnancy

Over 100,000 unborn babies are

surgically aborted in Canada every year.

A third of reported abortions are repeat

abortions as it is often used as an

alternative to birth control.

Three of ten pregnancies end in abortion.

Sadly, our current government is decidedly

pro-choice and continues to promote both

abortion and euthanasia throughout

Canada.

This Year, the campaign for Vancouver 40 Days for Life will take place from Wednesday, February 17 to Sunday, March 28. Due to pandemic restrictions we will not be able to stand in silent prayer at the BC Women’s Hospital in Vancouver. Here is what you can do this year:

Our Parish has selected Thursday, March 4th as our day to focus on

the campaign. Good Shepherd Church will be open from 7AM to 7PM for prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament which will be on exposition for the 12 hour vigil. You are encouraged to spend an hour or more in silent prayer for the unborn. There is a max 10 person allowance, so you can call the Parish Office 604-531-5739 ahead of time to reserve your prayer time. Specific 40 Days for Life prayers and intentions will be made available.

For those who are shut-in or unable to come to the church, you can

pray & fast while focusing on the elimination of abortion in Canada. Most importantly, prayer and fasting are what God hears and desires.

Now is an opportunity to write a letter or an email to our government

leaders expressing your opposition to abortion in Canada. Let us NOT become discouraged or complacent. God can accomplish miracles through our prayers and fasting when we surrender to His will and purpose and do whatever we can to defend life from conception to its natural end!

Leviticus 13: 1-2, 44-46 Psalm 32: 1-2, 5, 11 1 Corinthians 10: 31-11:1 Mark 1: 40-45

Pope Francis 16.01.20 Holy Mass Santa Marta (Domus Sanctae Marthae) www.vatican.va

Today’s Gospel passage (Mark 1:40-45) presents to us the healing of a man afflicted with leprosy, a disease that in the Old Testament was considered a grave impurity and required the leper to be separated from the community: they lived in isolation. His condition was truly pitiful, because the mind-set of the time made him feel unclean even before God, and not only before mankind. Even before God. Therefore the leper of the Gospel beseeches Jesus with these words: “If you will, you can make me clean” (v. 40).

The leper’s request is a simple prayer, an act of confidence — but at the same time, a true challenge. It

is plea that comes from the depths of his heart, which also reveals something about Jesus and His compassion for us. Jesus, suffers with and for us, He takes the suffering of others upon Himself, comforting them and healing them in the name the love of the Father.

The phrase, “If you will…” is a prayer that gets God’s attention. It is a challenge, but also an act of confidence: I know that He can do it, and so I entrust myself to Him.

The leper was able to make this prayer, because he saw how Jesus acted. This man had seen the compassion of Jesus. Compassion, not pity, is a refrain in the Gospel.

Compassion gets involved, it comes from the heart and gets involved, and it leads you to do something. Compassion is suffering with, taking the suffering of the other person upon yourself in order to resolve it, to heal it. And this was the mission of

Jesus. Jesus did not come to preach the law and then return to heaven, washing His hands of us. He came to be close to us, and He reains always at our side. Jesus came in compassion, that is, to suffer with and for us and to give us life itself. The love of Jesus is so great that compassion led Him precisely to the Cross, to give His life.

This expression can be turned into a prayer that we can use every day:

“Lord, if you will, you can heal me; if you will, you can forgive me; if you will, you can help me.” Or, if you want, you can make it a little longer: “Lord, I am a sinner, have mercy on me, have compassion on me”. A simple prayer that can be said many times a day, inwardly, from the heart, without saying it out loud: “Lord, if you will, you can; if you will, you can. Have compassion on me”. Repeat this.

The leper, with his simple and miraculous prayer, was able to obtain healing thanks to the compassion of Jesus, who loves us despite our sinfulness. He is not ashamed of us. For He came precisely for us sinners, and the greater a sinner you are, the closer the Lord is to you.

And each time we approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation with a contrite heart, the Lord also repeats to us: “I will; be clean!”. How much joy there is in this! In this way the leprosy of sin is overcome;

we return to joyfully experience our filial relationship with God and we are fully readmitted into the community.

Through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, our Immaculate Mother, let us ask the Lord, who brought wellbeing to the sick, to heal even our inner wounds with his infinite mercy, and thus give us back hope and peace of heart.

Why a Small Group Right Now? read full article at: beholdvancouver.org

Wanting deep relationships is something built into us but it’s not always easy. It’s hard to get past surface-level conversations or find the courage to be vulnerable. But just imagine: How great would it be to have a group of friends that supports and encourages us in our daily lives? Journey through the ups and downs of relationships, careers, faith, and more with us? A group of friends willing to pray for us when we needed it most?

This kind of connection and community is exactly what Jesus had. Though he was the son of God, He still chose to eat, journey, and spend most of his time with a small group of men and women. And they became the apostles—but not before they were Jesus’ friends. And it was in a small group setting where the apostles came to know and love Jesus—just as we can do in our own small groups.

The goal of a faith-based small group is

ultimately to help every member of the group mature in their relationship with Jesus. Being in a group like this, we benefit from the wisdom, love, and encouragement of others just as they each benefit from the gifts we have to offer. In other words, a small group is founded around one, enduring mission: to grow closer to Christ.

Why Is It So Important Right Now?

It’s certainly reasonable to think that holding off on joining a small group makes sense for now. We may tell ourselves that, once things return to some semblance of normal, that we’ll then be in a position to join a group.

But now more than ever, connection is important. Our relationship with God can get diluted in the chaos of not being able to go to Mass, or seeing as many people in our community. It’s a time that requires intentionality.

Of course, there is something to be said about meeting face-to-face, which many might not be able to do at the moment. But Zoom calls, Facetime, or just a phone call can still work. It’s not always ideal, but we don’t have to be physically present in a small group to still benefit spiritually, intellectually, and emotionally from one.
