Selectel is the leading provider of data center services in Russia. It hosts the largest socialnetwork in Russia, Vkontakte*, as well as offering public cloud hosting services to othercustomers. Selectel has thousands of customers worldwide and serves them using its owndata centers located in Moscow, St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region.

Challenge

To compete internationally, Selectel wanted to deliver a level of performance competitorscould not match. In its public cloud offering, Selectel was using hard disk drives, but thesecouldn’t give it the market segment-leading performance it needed. Selectel wanted to im-prove the cost of performance (measured in input/output operations per second, or IOPS)and its power consumption.

Solution

Intel® Solid-State Drives (Intel® SSDs) offer a reliable alternative to traditional hard drives,with breakthrough storage performance. Following an initial pilot program, the 180GB IntelSSD 520 Series is used as an affordable alternative to hard disk drives in Selectel’s cloudinfrastructure. The 240GB Intel SSD 525 Series is used in client installations, including forvideo caching on the VKontakte social network. Selectel is now piloting use of the Intel SSD910 Series as a high-end caching option for the cloud, with deployment expected to followthis year.
