I didn’t even ask my newly made friends in Music Producation what it was until showtime. I found out that it was a chorale concert of CSB’s Choir. Some songs such as “True Colors”, “Lazy Song”, “ Ilay Gandangan”, and many more were showcased. During the show, my friend told me that CSB won in an international competition. I could not believe I watched international winners. I did not expect the choir to be good because I’ve never heard CSB Choir perform yet (Yes, I’m the guy that approaches something for the 1st time with contempt. Especially if it’s a band, musician, and choir. All the other stuff, I’m very open). I found it very e ntertaining , add in good company, I thought the package was complete. My friends and I had such a great time, we even tried applying what we’ve learned in Music Theory to the mix. We tried and somewhat failed. The idea of audience participation was fun too, although very common and cheesy, but I found it to be the highlight of the night. Few of the audience members showcased their talents: a guy rapped “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj and I think a co uple sang a duet of a B runo Mars song. I tried reviewing this in my head a few t imes (because it was a few months ago, so memory’s a bit hazy) and found that that night was a great night to start off the term and my life in CSB. I hope there are more of these performances because I’ve wanted more of the CSB Choir for quite sometime now.

    1. Himig ng Karilyon

I decided to watch Himig ng Karilyonbefore I even knew what it was about. I didnt even ask

my newly made friends in Music Producation what it was until showtime. I found out that it was a

chorale concert of CSBs Choir. Some songs such as True Colors, Lazy Song, Ilay Gandangan, and

many more were showcased. During the show, my friend told me that CSB won in an international

competition. I could not believe I watched international winners.

I did not expect the choir to be good because Ive never heard CSB Choir perform yet (Yes, Im

the guy that approaches something for the 1st time with contempt. Especially if its a band, musician,

and choir. All the other stuff, Im very open). I found it very entertaining, add in good company, I

thought the package was complete. My friends and I had such a great time, we even tried applying what

weve learned in Music Theory to the mix. We tried and somewhat failed.

The idea of audience participation was fun too, although very common and cheesy, but I found

it to be the highlight of the night. Few of the audience members showcased their talents: a guy rapped

Super Bass by Nicki Minaj and I think a couple sang aduet of a Bruno Mars song. I tried reviewing this

in my head a few times (because it was a few months ago, so memorys a bit hazy) and found that that

night was a great night to start off the term and my life in CSB. I hope there are more of these

performances because Ive wanted more of the CSB Choir for quite sometime now.

    2. Taking Chances (Short Film)

My friends and I were suppose to watch Pineapple Express, but due to some reason Pineapple

Express was moved to an earlier slot. So my other friend, his lady friend, and I (the third wheel),

watched Taking Chances by mistake. Apparently, the theatre was scheduled to screen it.

Taking Chances was a short film that featured the talents of the Film students of CSB. I thought

it was just flat out cheesy. Maybe it was missing-Pineapple-Express-and-watching-another-film part that

lead me to think that it was cheesy, but with internet nowadays, movies can be downloaded, so I wasnt

too upset that I watched the wrong film or maybejust maybeit WAS just cheesy. Anyway, from what

I can remember, the film was about a girl that wanted to take a chance and tell a guy that he met at

the frosh orientation that she like him; she did, but it all ended with the girl hugging the guy with tears.

When my friend, his lady friend, and I saw that last part, I remember saying WHAT?!out loud. I did notthink students of CSBs standards settled for the mediocre ending. The hug was not the oh-my-god-that-

is-such-an-awesome-scene-im-gonna-cry. No. It was the hug-tears-cheesyline-i-want-to-leave-the-

    cinema kind.

Im sorry if all of the above seem very harsh, but I mean good. I thought that CSBs Film

department had high standards and quality of work because I saw my other friends work (Film Student,

CSB) and it was AWESOME. I could not believe that he made it. All in all, there was potential, but I think

    some more improvement is needed.

    3. The Boy with the Striped Pajamas (12th floor SDA Cinema)

The story is simple: boy is bored, boy goes exploring, boy finds boy with striped pajamas, they

become friends, boy finds out that boy with striped pajamas is a jew, boy feels bad for boy with striped

pajamas and helps him, and boy dies with boy with striped pajamas. Simple? Yeah, well, this got me so

bad that even the next day I could not think straight. Ive got nothing to say about this movie, but

    damn excuse my French.

If youve never seen this movie, then I suggest you go see it becauseall my frustration about this

movie will become clearer. Throughout the movie, violence and cruelty were shown to the Jews because

the storys setting was World War II or around that time and while I was watching, I couldnthelp but

imagine that I had Telekenisis like Sylar from the TV Series Heroes(Wow, I did not know I can be this

geeky). Sylar had this power that enables him to kill people without even touching his victims. I imaginedmyself having this power and using it against the Nazis. By the way, Im not that kind of person. This is

just me imagining things for the purposes of portraying my thoughts and feelings that I had during and

    after the movie.

Ultimately, I liked the movievery good storyline and a very tragic ending. I just didnt like the

fact that the characters were German and they were speaking with a British accent. It was just plain

    weird.

    4. Klasikal (Music Week 2011)

Being in Music Production, like any other course in Benilde, has its perks; for example, a free 1

hour performance from a great pianist, musician, and member of the Music Production faculty. Ms.

Karen Francisco showcased the works of great composers both in the Philippines and abroad; some

include the works of Levi Selerio, Frederick Chopin, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and many more.

I came from a school where classical music was everything. I loathed every last bit of it, but for a

time, classical was the only thing that kept me going. When pop, blues, and rock caught my attention,

classical musics hold did not last one second. I stayed away from classical music for a few years until

now. This was the first in about four years that Ive listened to classical music. This was the first time, in

my older self, that Ive listened to classical music diligently and attentively.

Classical music, on its own, is very appealing to the senses; add in the very grandiose playing of

Ms. Karen Francisco and youve got ecstacy with music. An explosion, although very sweet, of music that

is the very best from Benilde. Let me just say that SHE WAS GREAT! From the very start of the

performance to the very end, my ears were wide open. The music she played was very appealing for

someone who was coming back from pop-rock-blues music to classical.

Ultimately, I had a great time. By the way, this was part of Music Productions MusikWeek 2011

which featured performance by some of great Filipino artists of this generation. Right now, Im very

excited to see JC Magsalin with the Vince Lahorra Jazz Quartet and Francis De Veyra with Radioactive

Sago Project. I hope to have more Musik Weeks!

    5. JazzJazzan (Musik Week 2011)

Jazz: a genre of music that never fails to inspire and impress. It has been a great week for Music

Production students because Musik Week was a success! Great artists, great performances, and great

company. Seriously, I had so much fun watching 3 of 5 performances. Jazzjazzan was the second

    performance I went to.

Jazzjazzan was the part of Musik Week that featured the Vince Lahorra Jazz Quartet and

Radioactive Sago Project. Vince Lahorra Jazz Quartet consist of Vince Lahorra on Saxophone, Mel Santos

on Keyboard, Dave Harder on Bass (a professor in Benilde), and Lawrence Nolan on Drums. When I

heard this quartet, a long lost love for Jazz found its way back to me. Man, I cant describe the feeling

when I was listening to the quartet. Its like booze with sticky food (peanut butter, kakanin, etc) on a

rainy daycool enough to get hooked. Describing jazz is so difficult because its form is so free. VinceLahorra Jazz Quartet showcased jazz pieces such as Spiderman Theme, Pink Panther theme, The

Chicken by Jaco Pasturious, and many more.

On the other hand, Radioactive Sago Projects playing turned the Black Box into White. It was

very loud! Before the show, I was very excited to hear them play because Ive never heard them live nor

have I heard them again since 2005 or so. Man, GREAT sound with GREAT lyrics. I didnt know every one

of them, except the dj, was from UP. One member that really caught my eye was the Saxophonist, Ms.

Roxy Foxy Modesto. Lets face it: Saxophonists have this appeal to them more than guitarists or any

other. This was the first time Ive seen a woman play the sax and let me tell you it was SEXY. Everytime I

see a girl playing a popular instrument (e.g. drums, guitar, piano), I feel very intimidated, but when a girl

plays the SAX, WOW, now thats something else. The other band members slaps me right in the face

too; although, theyre singer, Lourd de Veyra, was not there because he had work. Mr. Francis de Veyra,

the bassist and brother of Lourd, is a professor in Benilde. Besides Ms. Modestos playing, Mr. De Verya

created basslines thats crazy enough to punch a whole in the space time continuum and plus he was

singing while playing his basslines. Radioactive Sago Project showcased some of their hits such as Hello

Hello, Gin Pomelo, and my favorite Alak, Sugal, Kape, Babae = Kabaong.

Again, I loved every second of it and I hope more Musik weeks to come.
