We are excited to announce...

TO FIND OUT MORE

Q What made you want to be a Duffy role model?

A Creativity and imagination are characteristics that should be

treasured and held in the highest regard. Unfortunately I think we do not encourage creative thinking in children enough. Reading is a way of allowing anyone to wander off into an imaginary world. Duffy Books is a great cause because as a Role Model you are involved

in the process. You get to see first-hand how this charity has an impact on a child.

Q What was the most enjoyable part of each assembly for you?

A When the principal announced to the school that Duffy books were being

handed out, the body language of every child changed. They sat up and were fully engaged. It put a huge smile on my face and I won’t forget those moments.

Q How would you pitch to a new candidate who is thinking

about being a Duffy Role Model?

A If you are looking to contribute towards a worthy cause, you

can’t look past Duffy Books. Reading is a fundamental skill in life that most people take for granted. The look I saw when these children saw their books was one of pure happiness.

Q How do you see the programme benefiting the

next generation of our country?

A It is important that we are part of a country where we want

to give back to society. Whether that is through Duffy Books or other initiatives, people can do incredible things. We have the ability to make a difference in each other’s lives and it is our individual responsibility to ensure that we contribute to this in one way or another. A programme like Duffy Books can inspire an entire generation to not only read but to dream. As clichéd as that might sound, no child should have that taken away from them.

Our first day of Role Model assemblies for Term 1 kicked off with a bang as we arranged a special surprise for Hapuku

School and Kaikoura Primary School – our two Duffy Kaikoura schools. A long-time supporter of the programme and double Olympic Champion, Mahe Drysdale packed his bags and headed south to surprise and inspire our Duffy kids after the hard-hitting December earthquake.

Mahe was joined by Hayden Weal, also a Duffy Role Model with a background in the film industry. Both Mahe and Hayden had a great trip saying it really opened up their eyes to how life has been since the devastating earthquake.

Kaikoura Primary principal Nigel Easson said the students have been tired since the earthquake, but were excited about their special guest.

“The earthquake left some students lacking confidence and energy. We are so grateful to be a Duffy school and we hope Mahe’s visit will be the

push the students have needed to be inspired to regain confidence”.

DUFFY THEATRE We caught up with the red Duffy Theatre team to learn more about them. Check out what they had to say!

Q What place have you enjoyed visiting the most on tour in term 1?

What place have you enjoyed visiting

the most on tour in Term 1?

Dunedin!

Biggest difference from first week of tour to

last week in Term 1?

The changing of the show, by the end we felt really settled as a group

and a show.

Biggest difference from first week of tour to

last week in Term 1?

I was definitely tired by the end of week 10 compared to week 1! Instinctively acting and

adapting during a show to bring the kids back or regain their attention.Jess

Tavita

Biggest challenge so far?

Not getting to stay in places long enough to explore them properly, I feel like we try

to see everything but are missing out on so many beautiful places and

attractions.

Biggest challenge so far?

Getting used to tour life and changing places often, wish we could stay longer to check out all of the beautiful sites we

pass through.

Biggest difference from first week of tour to

last week in Term 1?

Taking ownership of the show, some small tweaks along the way have made it feel like

our own which we love! Also learning to read the energy of the audience and

adapting to it.

What place have you enjoyed visiting the most

on tour in Term 1?

Passing through Queenstown traveling from Haast to Lumsden and

wishing we could stay there!

What part of the show do you enjoy doing the most?

I really love the introduction of the show as well as introducing Millicent, the kids love

her and her outfit.

What part of the show do you enjoy doing the most?

Teaching Millicent to read is a real highlight for me and it hits home the

literacy message in the show.

The experiment in the show really captures the kids as does the introduction

of Zanezelda in her awesome costume. Wanda always gets some

good attention too!

Ross on the West Coast. We stayed on after the show and planted trees with

Changing places often. Many places we are only staying for one night and it becomes hard to settle into a room
