TipsforParentsonReadingtoYourChildren
Find a cozy spot in the house to read to your child, but be
sure there is plenty of light.
Set a special time for each day to read for at least 15
minutes with your child. This could be in the afternoon after
your child comes home from school or right before bedtime.
Be sure, even as your children get older to have to them
read for 15 30 minutes per day.
With smaller children, take some time to first go through the
book and look at the pictures. Let your child make
predictions about the story based off the pictures, then when
you read the story, your child can see if they were right!
If your child is an emerging reader, let them try and read the
book to you. Help your child with words they may not know
by showing them how they can sound out the letters of the
word.
Another strategy you can use if your child is having trouble
with a word is to look to the illustrations for clues. After reading a story, talk to your child about the book. What
was their favorite part or their favorite character? Have them
retell you parts of the story or ask them questions about
certain parts of the story to check your childs reading
comprehension.
Always encourage and praise your child for a job well done.
Make sure you surround your child with books, so theyalways have the opportunity to start a new adventure and
build a love for reading!

Blue Star FamiliesStrong families. They are the heart and
soul of our military and our nation.
These are stressful times. With a record-long 11 years
of war, frequent deployments, a punishing operation
tempo and economic hardship at home, our military
families face unprecedented challenges. As we shift
from war to recovery and reintegration, our militaryfamilies need us now more than ever.
Blue Star Families

Our mission is simple: to support, empower and
connect military families to each other, their
communities and local and national policy-makers.
To do so, we work directly with the Department of
Defense as well as senior members of our local, state
and federal governments -- including the Senate,
Congress and the White House -- to bring military
families most important issues to light.
community advocates to develop and offer
programs that help military families -- from
kids literacy and entertainment initiatives
to suicide prevention and programs
that help communicate the publics
often unexpressed appreciation foreverything these families do every day.
