In this lesson you will

find out about natural disasters.

Page 3: read maps. learn how to protect yourselves against the elements of nature

3

Natural disasters come in

many shapes and sizes.

Hurricanes, for example,

are severe tropical

storms.

Page 4: read maps. learn how to protect yourselves against the elements of nature

4

Hurricanes form in the

southern Atlantic Ocean,

Caribbean Sea, Gulf of

Mexico, and in the eastern

Pacific Ocean. They gather

heat and energy through

contact with warm ocean

waters.

7

Hurricanes rotate in a counter-

clockwise direction around an

"eye“. Hurricanes have winds of

at

least 74 miles per hour.

When they come onto land, the

heavy rain, strong winds and

heavy waves can damage

buildings, trees and cars and, of

course, take

human lives.

Page 8: read maps. learn how to protect yourselves against the elements of nature

8

We can use meteorological

instruments to predict an

oncoming hurricane.

An earthquake, however, is

another story.

Page 9: read maps. learn how to protect yourselves against the elements of nature

9

Most times, you will notice

an earthquake by the gentle

shaking of the ground. You may

notice hanging lamps swaying or

objects wobbling on shelves.

Sometimes, you may hear a low

rumbling noise or feel a sharp jolt.

11

Earthquakes are the

shaking, rolling or

sudden shocking of the

earth’s surface.

Earthquakes occur along

"fault lines" in the

earth’s crust.

Page 12: read maps. learn how to protect yourselves against the elements of nature

12

Earthquakes can be felt

over large areas, although

they usually last less

than one minute.

Earthquakes cannot be

predicted -- although

scientists are working on

it!

Page 13: read maps. learn how to protect yourselves against the elements of nature

13

The intensity of an

earthquake can be

measured on an

instrument called the

Richter scale. Earthquakes

below 4.0 on the Richter

scale do not usually cause

damage.

Page 14: read maps. learn how to protect yourselves against the elements of nature

14

Earthquakes over 5.0

on the scale can cause

damage. A magnitude

6.0 earthquake is

considered strong and a

magnitude 7.0 is a

major earthquake.

22

In addition to

earthquakes and

hurricanes, man has to

deal with many other

kinds of natural

phenomena, such as

thunderstorms, lightning,

floods, and drought.

Page 23: read maps. learn how to protect yourselves against the elements of nature

23

Thunderstorms effect

small areas when

compared with

hurricanes. The typical

thunderstorm is 15 miles

in diameter and lasts an

average of 30 minutes.

Page 24: read maps. learn how to protect yourselves against the elements of nature

24

Nearly 1,800

thunderstorms are

happening at any moment

around the world.

That's 16 million a year!

Despite their small size, all

thunderstorms are dangerous.

Every thunderstorm produces

lightning, which kills more

people than tornadoes do, each

year. Tornadoes are __________dangerous

Page 27: read maps. learn how to protect yourselves against the elements of nature

27

The lightning is seen

before the thunder is

heard, because light

travels faster than

sound.

The average flash of

lightning could turn

on a 100 -watt light

bulb for more than 3

months.

Homework

Think of five things that you could do to help the victims of a flood. Take into consideration what the families have lost and what they would need the most. Remember, sometimes it’s the little things that count the most.
