I WANT TO BE A P.E. TEACHER

I want to teach P.E. when I grow up. I would really like to teach athletics.

Last week, our P.E. teacher, Mr Lim, taught us many interesting things about athletics. He told us that it is very important to warm up first and stretch properly. He also showed us some exercises to make our muscles stronger.

The more I learn about athletics, the more I want to tell others about it. Don’t you think becoming a teacher is the best way to do so?

Question 2 (C)

Instructions:

This question can be introduced by getting students to mention any career talks that they may have attended at school.

Introduce or revise relevant vocabulary, such as: recruit, department (within a government ministry), eyesight, minimum, single (= not married), practical. It may also be necessary to explain the difference between firefighters and fire officers. (The latter are more senior or experienced and have higher qualifications).

Ask the students to look at the questions in (a) to see what information is required. Then read the tapescript twice or thrice, pausing only briefly between sections, while the students

complete/check their answers.

Tapescript

Good morning, boys and girls. I’m Hajah Halimah, and I’m going to tell you about the Brunei Fire Service and how we recruit new firefighters.

The Fire Service is quite a big department. In the whole country, there are 21 fire stations. Altogether, there are 1,300 firefighters and fire officers, including 150 women. We need about 70 new recruits every year...............................................................................................................................................................................

So who can join the Fire Service? Well, all applicants, male and female, must be between 18 and 28 years old. They must have completed Year 9. They must pass a medical test and have good eyesight.

There is also a minimum height for firefighters. Men must be at least 1.63 metres tall, and women must be 1.52 metres. Men must also have a chest size of at least 86 cm.

Finally, men can be married or single, but women must be single...............................................................................................................................................................................

Now let me explain how to apply. You may see an announcement on the television or in Pelita Brunei. The announcement will tell you to go to the Fire Service Headquarters in Berakas. First, you will do some written tests, with simple questions on Mathematics and a short composition in Malay. After that, you will have an interview with a Fire Officer.

People who do well on that day will come back one week later to do some practical and fitness tests. For example, we want to know if you can carry a hose and climb up a long ladder.

If you pass these tests, you will have a final interview with a Senior Fire Officer. And then you are ready to begin your training.

23
