1. ! AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

1.1! All children will be taught to read and write through the Read Write Inc. Phonics ! programme. This programme is aimed at all pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 ! who are learning to read and write. Children are taught to:

• Decode letter-sound correspondences quickly and effortlessly, using their phonic knowledge and skills

• Read common exception words on sight• Understand what they read• Read aloud with fluency and expression• Write confidently, with a strong focus on vocabulary and grammar• Spell quickly and easily by segmenting the sounds in words• Acquire good handwriting

1.2! Children will progress onto Read Write Inc Spelling and English lessons once they ! can read with accuracy and speed (on completion of the Read Write Inc Phonics ! programme).

2.! ORGANISATION

2.1! RWI Phonics, Reading & Get Writing! sessions take place Monday - Thursday from ! 10.45 - 11.45 with no exceptions. Any trips or visits that will impact RWI groups ! should be discussed with the Phonics Leader prior to booking.

2.2! A teacher or TA will lead each homogeneous (at the same reading level) group of ! Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children for RWI Phonics, Reading & Get Writing! ! lessons.

2.3! An additional member of staff will be available every day to cover groups if staff are ! absent.

2.4! Reception will teach Phonics as a whole class during Autumn 1. Children will be ! assessed at the end of Autumn 1 and organised into 4 homogenous groups within ! Reception during Autumn 2. During Autumn 1 and Autumn 2, Reception should ! focus on covering a Speed Sounds lesson every day.

2.5! All staff must use the RWI handwriting phrases to ensure consistency throughout ! school (note that we form ‘k’ and ‘f’ differently).

2.6! Handwriting will be taught discreetly in addition to RWI lessons, but children should ! be encouraged to join digraphs and trigraphs in Phonics, Reading & Get Writing! ! lessons.

3.! DELIVERY

3.1! RWI focuses on using the 5 Ps:• Praise - children learn quickly in a positive climate.• Pace - good pace is essential to the lesson.• Purpose - every part of the lesson has a specific purpose.

• Passion - this is a very prescriptive programme. It is the energy, enthusiasm and passion that teachers put into the lesson that brings the teaching and learning to life.

• Participation - a strong feature of RWI lessons is partner work and the partners ‘teaching’ each other. This is based on research which states that we learn 70% of what we talk about with our partner and 90% of what we teach.

4.! PLANNING

4.1! Teachers and TAs must use planning from the ‘Speed Sound Lesson Plans’ ! Handbook for Phonics and the framework in the ‘Phonics Handbook’ and ‘Get ! Writing! Handbook’ for Reading & Get Writing! lessons.

4.2! Teachers and TAs are responsible for planning for and resourcing their RWI groups, ! with the support of the Phonics Leader as required.

4.3! All planning should be photocopied for each lesson and annotated as necessary, ! then stored at the back of the blue folder for each group.

5.! RESOURCES!5.1! Each member of staff teaching a Phonics, Reading & Get Writing! group should ! have a box of resources including:

• Small flashcards (Set 1, 2 and 3)• A4 flashcards (Set 1, 2 and 3)• Simple Speed Sounds poster• Complex Speed Sounds poster• Fred Frog • Set of green words• Set of red words• Set of alien words• Pinny• Read, Write, Inc. Phonics Handbook• Read, Write, Inc. Speed Sound Lesson Plans Handbook• Read, Write, Inc. Get Writing! Handbook

5.2! Ditty and Reading books are stored in the cupboard in the staffroom.

5.3! Ditty and Get Writing! workbooks are stored in the shelving in the staffroom.

5.4! A 1-1 box RWI Phonics box is available for planned interventions with individual ! children.

6.! SEN AND MORE ABLE PUPILS

6.1! 1-1 interventions should be organised for any child who is not making expected ! progress (identified by Phonics Leader). These should be planned for and carried

! out every day until these identified children have caught up to the required ! standard.

6.2! The needs of all children will be met as children are regularly assessed every 6-8 ! weeks (every half-term) and organised into homogenous groups based on ability.

7.! ASSESSMENT

7.1! All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 who have not completed the RWI ! Phonics scheme will be assessed every 6-8 weeks (every half-term), and Phonics, ! Reading & Get Writing! groups will be organised based on this information. This ! data will be uploaded to OTrack by the Phonics Leader.

7.2! Children will be assessed 1-1 by the Phonics Leader, their class teacher, the ! Associate Headteacher or Executive Headteacher.

7.3! Once children have completed the RWI programme, they should move on to ! English lessons based on the National Curriculum objectives and RWI Spelling.

8.! MONITORING

8.1! The Phonics Leader will: • Ensure that RWI assessments are planned for and carried out for all

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 pupils every 6-8 weeks (every half term).• Organise children into ability groups for Phonics, Reading & Get Writing!

and assign a teacher or TA to each group based on assessments every half-term.

• Organise ‘drop ins’ for RWI Phonics, Reading & Get Writing! groups to offer support and ensure consistency across groups.

• Model lessons for staff to observe.• Attend update RWI meetings and report back to staff.• Organise support and training for staff.• Upload children’s RWI assessments to OTrack every half-term.• Organise for resources to be sent home and lead workshops for parents

as necessary.

9.! HOMEWORK

9.1! Every child in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will be given a RWI ‘Set 1 Speed ! Sounds book’ and ‘Set 2 & 3 Speed Sounds book’ to practice Phonics at home. ! The teacher or TA responsible for their Phonics, Reading & Get Writing! group must ! inform parents/carers of the sounds the children have been covering during the ! week every Thursday.
