Overlooking Mark Twain’s mighty Mississippi River, Southeast Missouri State University is the kind of place that people across the globe imagine when they think of college. The beautiful campus is an eclectic mix of old and new. Classic limestone buildings blend harmoniously with contemporary structures. Southeast was recently named the safest campus in Missouri and among the safest in the nation by StateUniversity.com.

Our academics combine the best of tradition with technology of the future. Career training and broad-based liberal arts education emphasize writing and critical thinking, which are required in all occupations. In addition, hands-on learning opportunities and internships in every major prepare you for your first job.

With more than 1,600 undergraduate courses, we teach everything from the classics to robotics. This extensive curriculum offers unique opportunities—pre-medical students take fine arts courses; musicians confront computers; nutrition majors crunch numbers in statistics courses and scientists play the trombone.

Across the curriculum, technology enhances learning— in language labs, in the management of stock portfolios, in practicing the latest nursing techniques, in chemistry, in graphic design, in education, in sophisticated science labs and at the new River Campus.

You may choose from more than 200 areas of study and many programs that have additional, prestigious accreditations from national and international organizations. This is important because it means you can study a variety of subjects, choose from numerous majors, and meet people who are pursuing a range of interesting careers. Unlike a liberal arts institution or an engineering school whose mission is very specific, you can stay at Southeast and change your mind about your major or enhance your career potential by adding a double or even a triple major.

With an enrollment of more than 11,000, our academic programs blend the advantages of a large institution with an emphasis on small class sizes that makes learning interactive and fun.

2005—Southeast is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC)—one of only two universities in Missouri!

2005—“Rowdy” the Redhawk

becomes our new mascot.

2005—Princeton Review includes the Harrison College of Business on its list of the “Best Business Schools.”

2002—After nearly 20 years of National League for Nursing Accreditation, the bachelor’s program in nursing receives 10 years of accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The master’s program was accredited in 2001.

2003—Kaplan’s Guide lists Southeast among only 30 universities as a national “Hidden Treasure.”

2006—U.S. News & World Report names Southeast in the top tier of “America’s Best Colleges.”

2006—Innovative Career Linkages program is initiated.

2004/2005—$2 million renovation of Towers East and South residence halls is completed.

2004—Enrollment reaches 9,618—another record year.

World Class. In the Midwest.

2002—New Vandiver Residence Hall meets rising student enrollment.

2005—Enrollment breaks 10,000 students.

The college experience of a lifetime. The job of your dreams. A life that is amazing. That is what most students (and parents) want from a college education. At Southeast, we want the same for you. We want you to learn your profession, gain the experience or internship you need, and help you get that first paycheck!

The growing—and changing—student body has had an impact on everything and everyone. The physical changes of the campus are the most visible. Two new residence halls. The River Campus. The polytechnic building. An information commons in the library. And so on.

Students and faculty are experiencing change of a different kind. Classroom activity has reached a new level of productivity, as students are brighter and more prepared than ever. Enrollment is at an all-time high. The impact on the honors program has been dramatic with more students than ever choosing to participate in and complete the honors curriculum. The number participating tripled in five years!

All of this means that Southeast has become Missouri’s most academically competitive regional university.

2008—Chemistry labs in Magill Hall are remodeled with more renovations coming.

2007—The River Campus becomes home to the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts, making Southeast the only university in Missouri to have a separate campus dedicated exclusively to art, dance, music and theatre.

2008—Heather MacDonald Greene Multimedia Center is completed in Kent Library.

2008—Aquatic center, with two pools, hot tub and climbing wall, opens in the Student Recreation Center.

2008—Southeast’s national public radio affiliate expands into new studios serving more than 102,000 people.

2009—New residence hall opens this academic year to meet growing enrollment–the third in less than a decade.

2010—Southeast is named the safest campus in Missouri and among the safest in the nation by StateUniversity.com.

2011—To meet growing demand, a new cybersecurity major is added. The U.S. Department of Labor predicts 135,000 new jobs in this field by 2018—a 21 percent increase in Missouri alone.

2011—Princeton Review again names Southeast as one of the “Best in the Midwest, ” representing only about 25 percent of the nation’s four-year colleges.

Southeast students have access to more than 30 international exchange and study abroad opportunities in London, Paris, Spain, Portugal, North Africa and Western Europe, to name a few.

Doctoral level professors make learning interactive with classrooms that have Internet, cable TV, direct satellite feed and electronic presentation capability.

St. Louis employers rate the “St. Louis Interview Days” as the best recruiting event in which they participate in the Midwest. More than 100 Southeast business students are involved each year.

Employers and students value our techno-savvy environment. In a recent survey of 98 nationally known business programs, Southeast ranked in the top 7 percent in learning to use and manage technology.

Our increasingly popular business programs have made us one of the major colleges of business in the Midwest. The Donald L. Harrison College of Business is accredited by AACSB International—the gold standard of business school accreditation—an honor held by only 5 percent of institutions offering business degrees worldwide. Even in an economy that is unpredictable, industries across the board need college-trained applicants to fill business-related positions. Health care, hospitality, manufacturing and others rely on accountants, auditors, economists, information system managers and analysts to make their companies thrive. As a Southeast business graduate, you will be in demand. Graduates enjoy a job placement rate of nearly 100 percent within the first year after graduation. You may choose from career fields including accounting, economics, finance, international business, management and marketing. Tougher accounting and auditing regulations make accounting a great option. Companies look to accountants to determine how they can operate more efficiently. Economists and finance staff make businesses run more profitably, and thus are in high demand. Prepare yourself for the global work force with a major in international business. If you are serious about developing skills that make organizations successful, choose an option in management or solve real-world problems in our popular marketing program. These programs and more await you in our college of business.

For seven consecutive years, Princeton Review included Southeast’s Harrison College of Business on its list of “Best Business Schools.”

One hundred percent of our students have the opportunity to participate in internship programs with companies nationwide.

Our accounting curriculum prepares students for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designations. Students may go to work directly into an accounting field or go on to complete the 150 hours required by Missouri, and other states, to sit for the CPA examination. Our first-time pass rates on the CPA exam continue to be well above the national average.

Our entrepreneurial studies program is Missouri’s most comprehensive, offering options for both BSBA and MBA degrees. The Douglas C. Greene Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is one of the most comprehensive entrepreneurship-focused university centers in the Midwest.

Business programs are housed in Dempster Hall, a wireless Internet environment featuring an electronic presentation lab and more than 400 networked computers with the latest software.

Unlike many universities, our small class size lets you learn from faculty who provide personal attention to make your college career productive. Few public universities our size—11,000 students overall—offer business classes with only 26 students per professor. You get a virtually private education at a public university price. The combination of expert faculty, the latest technology and our spacious business building gives you the best college experience. Teaching and learning extend beyond desktop computers to anytime, anyplace, anywhere via iPods, laptops and other wireless devices. Class materials are accessed through podcasting/vodcasting in MP3, MP4, RSS or Atom formats, with new technologies developing rapidly. Dempster Hall is a wireless Internet environment. One hundred percent of our students have the opportunity to participate in internship programs with companies nationwide and are an important part of our curriculum. Active learning occurs throughout your time here. Students work on team projects with local and regional companies, manage a real-life financial portfolio, and visit the New York Stock Exchange or the Chicago Board of Trade, as well as participate in the International Business Study Tour.

Accreditation by the Network of International Business Schools recognized Southeast for “deep” internationalization of all facets of its business program. Only four institutions in the United States made this international list.

Worldwide Accreditation

Our students regularly score above average on the national Major Field Achievement Test. Business graduates work in prestigious firms such as American Airlines, AT&T, Boeing, KPMG International, Maritz, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Procter & Gamble, to name a few.

For many, the desire to teach has been a lifelong consideration. Perhaps it is because learning is something we have all experienced in a personal way. Regardless of how we came to think about the classroom, the future for teachers is bright. There are critical shortages of teachers in the fields of special education, math, science, foreign language and technology. If you are considering teaching as a profession, you are looking at the right university. For more than a century, Southeast has been preparing and sustaining some of the nation’s brightest and best teachers. Moreover, we have a record of accomplishment to prove it. Consider these recognitions received over the years.

Most importantly, our education program is fully accredited by the National Council of Teacher Education (NCATE), which sets the highest standards for teacher education programs nationwide. Recognition is great; however, it is the day-to-day interaction with faculty and the innovative curriculum that help our students succeed. Because you begin assisting and observing in area classrooms starting in your first year, you accumulate more teaching practice and knowledge than graduates from other universities. This approach gives you a distinct advantage in the job market. It also gives you confidence as you step into the classroom for your first job. You experience a variety of teaching settings culminating with a full semester of student teaching during your senior year—not the traditional eight or nine weeks, but 16 full weeks of actual on-the-job training. This experience can be in one of more than 35 countries in Asia, Latin America, Africa, Europe, the South Pacific and the Middle East, or in a Native American school in the United States. Of course, you can request to student teach in your hometown or somewhere nearby.

Americans are keenly aware of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and using leisure time wisely, and careers in these areas are consistently on the list of top career choices. Opportunities are varied and many require time spent in nature, on sports fields, at national parks, in health clubs or places other than a desk. Whether your interest lies in physical education, exercise science, fitness, strength and conditioning, managing athletic teams, outdoor adventure or another aspect of health and recreation, our programs can propel you to an exciting career. Programs in athletic training, exercise science and health promotion prepare you to work with active individuals to help them recognize, prevent and rehabilitate injuries. Facilities such as the human performance laboratory, athletic training laboratory and the bone density laboratory prepare you for a technology-reliant field. Our sport management program is one of 53 nationwide approved by the Sport Management Review Council and one of only a few in the Midwest. It is no wonder our students are in demand. Many have trained with and/or are employed by organizations such as the New England Patriots, St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Sports Commission, Ladies Professional Golf Association, Lowe’s Motor Speedway, U.S. Navy, YMCA, Rawlings Sporting Goods and health facilities around the country. The world’s focus on international peacekeeping is causing young people to join the military. Aerospace studies (Air Force ROTC) offers opportunities to pursue officer positions in the United States Air Force. With stipends and scholarships, you can even earn a graduate degree funded by the Air Force. After graduation, you are guaranteed a job with the U.S. Air Force in exchange for a four-year military commitment. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs in communication disorders is increasing. Our undergraduate program prepares you for graduate studies in speech and language pathology, audiology and education for the hearing impaired. Our master’s program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The pass rate of our graduates on the national certification exam is nearly 90 percent compared to the national average of around 76 percent.

In Air Force ROTC, juniors and seniors can join the Professional Officer Corps, which allows you to assume commanding positions over members of the General Military Cadets.

Having our own Speech and Hearing Clinic on campus helped us earn a place on the U.S. News & World Report list of leading graduate programs.

A Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptometer (DXA) enables students to measure bone mineral density, a marker for osteoporosis, and is the standard for measuring body composition/body fat. Southeast is one of a few universities to have such technology.

The human performance laboratory in the Student Recreation Center offers equipment for exercise, metabolic measurement systems, Monark leg ergonometer, cycling simulator, lactate analyzers, body composition measurement devices and more.

The recreation program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Recreation, Park Resources and Leisure Services, sponsored by the National Recreation and Park Association.

Students can participate in one of three state licensed centers—one for senior adults, a child enrichment center and our center for disabled adults.

With crime at the forefront of national attention, our popular criminal justice program prepares you for careers in law enforcement and corrections.

Criminal justice majors learn from skilled, interdisciplinary faculty with expertise in criminal justice, criminology, sociology and criminal law. Southeast has a strong connection with the Law Enforcement Academy and has more than 30 years of partnerships in all branches of criminal justice at the federal, state and local levels. Our students intern with the U.S. Marshals Service; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms; the U.S. Secret Service; Federal Probation; Missouri Division of Probation and Parole; Missouri Youth Services and other law enforcement agencies. The Criminal Justice Association provides opportunities for field trips and firearms training, volunteering at events and networking with criminal justice professionals. Beginning in the junior year, nursing students have clinical opportunities that give hands-on experience in medical centers, outpatient settings, home health agencies and long-term care facilities. Our students benefit from the latest technology in a program that is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. They routinely have a 100 percent placement rate after graduation. All students enter as pre-nursing and admission is competitive. The baccalaureate and master’s programs are fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The focus of human environmental studies is on quality of life of children, individuals and families. The American Dietetic Association accredits our dietetics program as well as our postgraduate internship. If you major in child development, you might be placed in our nationally accredited child enrichment center for your clinical experience. Family studies majors work with families, including experiences at the Hoover Eldercare Center and the Horizon Center. Fashion merchandising, hospitality management and interior design students find jobs and internships in businesses locally and in large metropolitan areas. Family and consumer science education graduates are in great demand in area high schools. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, social work is one of the fastest-growing careers. Our nationally accredited program requires you to complete 448 hours of field education under the supervision of experienced social workers. Because of our accreditation with the Council on Social Work Education, your chances of employment after graduation are high.

The dietetics program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education and the American Dietetic Association. After completing an internship, students are qualified to take the test to become a registered dietitian. Our graduates have a success rate of nearly 100 percent on the national exam.

Criminal Justice students can choose from options in corrections, law enforcement and security management.

Nursing students benefit from the latest technology in our nationally accredited program. An example of nursing technology is SimMan, a simulated “patient” programmed with conditions such as cardiac and respiratory irregularities, trauma and diseases from which students learn to identify and treat. The cost of this equipment prohibits many universities from having one.

According to surveys by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, most employers are more concerned about candidates’ skills than their major. The skills they want most include communication and critical thinking, skills for which liberal arts graduates are known. An education in the liberal arts gives you broad-based training for careers in business, the arts, media, education and the legal profession. Southeast joined institutions worldwide in securing prestigious mass communication program accreditation by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). Only one other institution in Missouri has this elite accreditation. In addition, our public relations program is one of only 28 institutions—none in Missouri—that holds certification by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). Only 12 other institutions in the world have recognition from both ACEJMC and PRSA for their mass communication program. Campus media, student publications and internships prepare you for a variety of exciting careers. Students have opportunities to work on the student-managed radio station, KDMC Rage 103.7, the Arrow student newspaper, and the “U2” campus television station, all under the supervision of faculty from the Department of Mass Media. Students gain practical experience in their internship that is part of the required curriculum in the department as well. Students work with the latest desktop publishing equipment and software for advertising, journalism and public relations. Our certified historic preservation program is one of a few U.S. programs that offer a four-year degree and is among a small number to have full membership in the National Council for Preservation of Education, confirming it has passed the strictest scrutiny. Historic preservation majors have interned at the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, D.C., Navy Museum in Washington, D.C., Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania, Harry S. Truman Home in Independence, Mo., Fort Ticonderoga in New York and others of similar national and international distinction.

If you are a budding author or simply love English, you will be surrounded by a world of writing and publishing when you become part of our campus community of writer-publishers.

The Importance of Writing … what we do to support you in that effort It is unthinkable to send college graduates who are not competent writers into the work force. In all jobs, you encounter memos, reports, proposals, etc. This kind of writing cannot be learned in a course or two in college. We approach writing differently than many colleges and universities. While other institutions designate specific courses, Southeast integrates writing throughout your curriculum. At universities where writing is assigned to English departments, students rarely learn how to write from experts in the various fields. In our “writing in the disciplines” model, students get writing instruction at all levels and in all areas of study. There are plenty of resources to make sure you succeed! Our writing center staff helps you analyze and improve your paper in terms of grammar, citations and clarity. They will not write a paper for you, but will work with what you have written to improve your paper. Input is possible face-to-face or via email. Before you graduate, you must pass a writing proficiency exam. Employers consistently comment that this makes our graduates attractive. In today’s career market, it is critical to have every advantage.

If you are a budding author or simply love English, you will be surrounded by a world of writing and publishing when you become part of our campus community of writer-publishers. The student literary magazine Journey recently received first place in the Southern Literary Festival competition. Imagine how you will feel studying our exclusive collection of William Faulkner or holding a book inscribed by Albert Einstein. Immerse yourself in the culture and language of a different country by majoring in global cultures and languages in a department that is recognized as one of the nation’s 30 model programs. With increasing globalization, a foreign language can improve your chances for employment. Surveys indicate oral and communication skills are a high priority for employers in today’s workplace. Gain these skills in communication studies and corporate communications through courses in debate, public speaking and interpersonal communication, as well as leadership and team building. Seek individual or group help in the Oral Communication Across the Curriculum Center. Political science prepares you for careers in law, business, government, politics, etc. Each year approximately 30 students from a variety of majors around the University travel to Washington, D.C. to conference with some of the nation’s top scholars at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Students work with government personnel, including the likes of Sam Nunn and Henry Kissinger, and discuss global policies. Our pre-law program provides a comprehensive foundation to study law. During the last five years, Southeast’s pre-law students have exceeded the national LSAT average score, and their placement rate in law school approaches 100 percent. Psi Chi, the national honor society for psychology, and the Psychology Club co-sponsor the much-anticipated annual Student Research Conference during which students across campus display their scholarly endeavors. Philosophy majors study the texts and traditions that define Western thought and analyze contemporary problems in cognitive science, legal theory and applied ethics. Students majoring in philosophy have a 100 percent acceptance rate to graduate and law school.

Psychology students use clicker technology to respond in class. With remote control units, “clickers,” students learn interactively, and software immediately summarizes and displays responses.

Consider a place where students go on to veterinary school, some go on to manage golf courses, to teach, or to work in cybersecurity or automated technology. The School of Polytechnic Studies is such a place. Today’s industrial and agricultural environment is dynamic and highly dependent on technology. It is impossible to imagine sending graduates into the work force without the latest technical and management skills. The Otto and Della Seabaugh Polytechnic Building features modern classrooms and laboratory space, teleconferencing and interactive television capabilities, fully networked computer labs, and an industrial space for training and research. A Technology Resource Center promotes interaction with area industries. All bachelor’s degree students complete real-world experiences, applying concepts from the classroom and improving their chances for employment. Graduates in engineering technology, industrial education and technology management enjoy some of the highest job placement rates in the region. Our new sustainable energy systems management option prepares you to work in facilities management, energy conservation, green manufacturing and renewable energy technology. This innovative major responds to world needs to address global warming, air pollution and ecosystem destruction. Employment includes environmental consultant, facilities manager, energy specialist, etc. Another exciting new major is cybersecurity. As technology becomes more sophisticated, so do the means of cyber attacks on critical digital infrastructures!

As people worldwide seek economic, military and personal advantage over us and our country, cybersecurity experts are increasingly being hired. The U.S. Department of Labor predicts 135,000 new jobs in this field by 2018—a 21 percent increase in Missouri alone. Our cybersecurity major prepares you for these jobs in demand.

All of the bachelor of science programs in the Department of Industrial and Engineering Technology are nationally accredited.

Industrial and engineering technology students enjoy a high placement rate of graduates in professional careers with outstanding salaries.

Southeast is a designated Center of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing Technology.

Sustainable energy systems management majors have incredible opportunities to work in green technology–in green economic sectors associated with energy efficiency, green manufacturing, green construction, facilities management and renewable energy generation. Employment in these sectors currently shows high demand and is projected to increase in the coming years.

Performance spaces feature “sprung” floors to minimize strain on dancers, as well as the latest light and sound technology.

In 2007, a world of performance, culture and art opened to students and the region at the River Campus. With the coming of this magnificent facility, the number of new students planning to major in the visual and performing arts doubled in one year. Classic beauty and modern technology converge at Southeast’s new campus—Missouri’s only campus dedicated exclusively to art, dance, music and theatre. Overlooking the Mississippi River, a Cultural Arts Center and transformed Seminary Building are now home to the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts. Five interconnected art studios for painting, drawing, printmaking, fibers and design encourage art students to share their creativity. Two computerized looms, as well as two presses in the printmaking studio, are available. The computer design lab has the latest hardware and software, preparing graduates for the job market. A student/faculty art gallery features technology that allows for the display of 3-D animation, as well as painting, prints, ceramics and sculpture. As a dance student, you experience the intensity of ballet, the freedom of jazz and the aesthetics of modern dance in facilities that are impressive. Our dance studio is surpassed by none with quality sound technology and a “sprung” floor. Dancers perfect the smallest details in a studio that overlooks the Mississippi. They learn alongside students in theatre, music and art. They dance in two major “dance-exclusive” shows per year in addition to musical theatre events. The Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall matches the standards found in major theatres of New York and Chicago. The 50-line fly system includes 3 lines devoted to “Diva” orchestral shells that can be flown into place. Adjacent scene and costume shops are busy places as students build or sew for upcoming shows.

You can find internships and professional experience at the Berkshire Theatre Festival, the Lucille Lortel Theatre in New York, the McLeod Summer Theatre or the University of Connecticut Summer Theatre, as other Southeast students have. Become part of highly selective, summer master classes such as Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. You may find yourself continuing on for advanced study at Washington University, Indiana University, Juilliard or Northwestern. In 2008, the Golden Eagles Marching Band performed at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland becoming the second American university marching band to perform there twice. In 2009, the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra exchanged music as well as culture in China when they performed concerts in Shanghai and Beijing. Eleven soundproof practice rooms in the Seminary Building, all with a view of the Mississippi River, allow students to hone their craft. Music students perform in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall, a visually striking room with world-class acoustics. The electronic music lab houses the latest software for composing, recording and editing music, such as ProTools, a small-scale version of the system used to produce the soundtrack of “Lord of the Rings,” Mach 5, Sampletank, and Finale, a program for composition. Faculty bring a wealth of training and experience to our students and hold degrees from Eastman, Northwestern, Indiana University, the University of Michigan and the London School of Music, among others. They have performed in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and internationally in Germany, Japan, China and Ireland. Visual arts faculty have exhibited in national venues, as well as Japan, Korea and Europe.

College is a lot different than high school and new students face many changes. For one thing, college is harder. There is more homework, long papers and short deadlines. With more freedom, time management becomes increasingly important. Sleeping until noon and skipping classes are options, but not good ones! Following are a few of the ways we help new students–freshmen and transfers–transition into the intellectual and social community at Southeast.

f Living/learning communities cater to student preferences–business, education, first-year students, health and human sciences, honors program, visual and performing arts, etc.

f “Engage in 8!” gets you involved during the first eight weeks, focusing on activities including athletics, cultural events, national speakers and programs to help you survive.

f Opening Week is a time of fun and learning with social events and opportunities to learn about clubs and service activities.

f A student wellness campaign keeps you healthy in spite of long nights studying and more food choices than you have ever known.

f “Finish in 4!” is a computerized planning tool to help you select the right courses to graduate in four years–or close to it. Immensely popular, the DegreeWorks program is like a GPS system for your college career.

f Trained residence hall staff supports you during this exciting time. If you need a tutor, financial advice or just someone to talk to, they are the ‘go to’ people.

By now, you probably get it. Once you are on campus, we want you to thrive and eventually leave with your college diploma in hand.

Southeast was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as a top 40 “Best First-Year Experience” among U.S. colleges and universities.

There are lots of fun opportunities for students outside the classroom. So many, in fact, your biggest challenge will be deciding what to choose. The night with nothing to do is rare. A typical week offers a women’s soccer match, a classical music concert, a comedy act sponsored by the Student Activities Council, a dance or intramural sports tournament. The beautiful Show Me Center is a performance arena that hosts entertainers, concerts, ice shows and Division I men’s and women’s basketball. Students get in free to Southeast athletic events in this facility. Are you interested in getting involved? With more than 150 organizations as diverse as the magic club, ultimate frisbee, dodgeball and Up ‘til Dawn, there is something for everyone. Whether it’s the late-night pizza run, registering student voters or cheering the Redhawks on to victory, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to get involved. There is a lot going on when students get together at the University Center between classes. Lunchtime entertainment, career services and three dining areas provide a perfect location for students to “meet and greet” throughout the day and night. You won’t have time to be bored at the student union! At Southeast, we develop leaders. The Cornerstone Leadership Program is a sequence: First-Year Leadership Program, Emerging Leaders, and President’s Leadership Academy. Student Government represents students on campus. Student Activities Council plans and organizes campus events, and the Residence Hall Association is the student voice for their living environment.

Many consider Southeast’s residence halls to be the best in Missouri.

Living on campus is an integral part of the college experience. Students who live in one of Southeast’s 11 residence halls eat their meals in one of nine dining areas, study in the lounges or computer labs, and sleep—when there’s time! Southeast’s residence halls come in many different styles including community-style, suite-style, group living and apartments. Students share a double room with a roommate, giving new students opportunities to meet other students and to get to know the campus. Each floor or wing is staffed with a resident assistant who is available to connect you to University resources. You have many choices about where you will live. Your room has furniture, but you make it your own with posters, pictures, etc. Each room has 24-hour Internet access and cable TV. Dining on campus isn’t just grabbing fast food and running—it can be a culinary experience! Students living in the residence halls can choose from dining areas open from early morning to midnight. There’s always someplace to pick up a bagel, salad or pizza, or it can be an opportunity to enjoy a meal with friends and have a lively discussion about today’s psychology lecture.

Foreign trade. Global economy. International culture and exchange. Southeast recognizes the significance of a study-abroad experience in today’s world. That’s why Southeast offers more than 40 study-abroad programs. Knowledge of a second language increases the choices of overseas studies. Although most are taught in English, others are in the language of the host country. Some are independent; most are with other students and faculty. There are short-term (two or three week) cultural excursions, semester and year-long study programs, spring break trips—even internships. Our students enjoy an active international component in our curriculum, and each year hundreds of students take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad. Locations vary but have included France, Germany, Spain, Scotland, Italy, Russia, Finland, Korea, Kazakhstan, Ireland, England, Austria, Belgium, Sweden, Korea, Japan and the Netherlands. Students have worked at a chocolate factory in Ghana, taught in Ireland, learned French in Paris and studied international economics in Italy. They have performed in the symphony in China, worked in a castle in Germany, and learned from businesses worldwide—earning college credit!
