Kansas Youth Art MonthCelebrate at the State Capitol Art Exhibit!

Kansas Art Education AssociationYAM Exhibit March 2, 2013

Every year March is set aside nationally to celebrate YOUTH ART. The Kansas Art Education Association coordinates a celebration at the state level, which features an art exhibit at the Capitol Building in Topeka and a reception for student artists, parents, and teachers. This year KAEA will be partnering with Sargent Art in sponsoring four different prize opportunities to help celebrate. Sargent will be providing student and teacher prizes in the form of art supplies for each of the following categories- Elementary, Middle and High School. Sargent will also provide one overall state winner (student, parent and art teacher) with a grand prize of an All-Expenses paid trip to New York City to visit Art Museums. This packet will provide all the information you need to make you and your school a part of the celebration of YOUTH ART in Kansas!

February 1 Start making local plans for Youth Art Month

February 20 Deadline to mail YAM art work to your Area YAM volunteer (List of Area YAM volunteers is listed below)

Arts Day at the State Capitol…combined arts agencies / lobbying

February 25 Artwork for YAM Exhibit at the Capitol is due to YAM Area Representatives unless educators are planning to deliver theartwork in person on the evening of March 30 and help hang work at the Capitol the morning of March 31.

March 1 Artwork DUE: Delivered and given to a YAM person for sorting and photographing (by the evening of March 30 we will be working at a hotel location to be announced later).

March 2 Hang artwork for YAM Exhibit at State Capitol—8 a.m. KAEA Board meeting - 10:00-2:00Art awards and Reception 2:00 to 4pm

March 2 YAM take-down at State Capitol, immediately following the reception

April KAEA Board Meeting at the Salina Arts Center 10:00am - 2:00pm – YAM artwork will be picked up by YAM Area Representatives if they didn’t attend the take down at the State Capitol.

Rules for Submitting Artwork

1. EVERY art teacher (members and non-members) in the state may be represented by ONE piece of student artwork from every school they teach at.(for example if you have two elementary schools, you may enter one piece of artwork from each school)

2. Artwork must be completed by students enrolled in grades K-12 in the 2012/13 school year.3. For display reasons, artwork must be 2-dimensional - any medium. HOWEVER, if you only teach 3-dimensional classes, take a good photo of the 3-D work for display and matted the photo for Youth Art Month. If you are a KAEA member and are entering your student’s work to be included in the Sargent Art Competition, you may enter the actual 3-Dimensional piece for both display and judging. Please pack the item well.* This rule is subject to change if a different display venue is found.4. Maximum size 24 x 30 including mat (NO FRAME – NO GLASS), we are suggesting that you mat your work with a white or black matt board that is in good shape.

The mat may be hung with pins creating holes in the corners of the artwork. The inclusion of acetate will prevent your artwork from being photographed and possible publication!5. Artwork must include an artist statement or learning statement written by the student, limited to the

space provided on the label.6. Three required labels (provided below) must be filled out and attached as instructed.

AWARDS Information:Sargent Art YAM prizes*Sargent Art will provide student and teacher prizes for the winner in each of the following categories: Elementary, Middle Level and High School in the form of art supplies and a certificate for the student.Sargent will provide ONE overall state winner; his/her (one parent) and the art teacher will be awarded an expenses paid trip to New York to visit Art Museums.

*** Only active KAEA members and their students are eligible for Sargents prize offerings.

Educators may choose one of the following methods to make sure that their student’s artwork arrives in Topeka for the State Capitol Art Exhibit:

1. Art work delivered to YAM committee member by March 30 for sorting, photographing and labeling at a hotel (location to be announced) or call Shawny 316-641-7334 or Linda Morgan. 620-694-0981 and we will be happy to let you know our location.

2. Educators may contact the YAM Volunteers (see list of volunteers below) nearest to their school to make delivery arrangements for delivery.

3. Educators may mail artwork to the YAM Volunteers nearest to their school. If mailing - mail all artwork from your school in one box if possible. Package the artwork carefully to prevent damage. If mailing, include return postage (and or stamps) and school address label for quick return – (No metered mail) All artwork being mailed must be postmarked on or by February 20, 2013.

Return of Artwork – Educators may choose one of the following methods to make sure that their student’s artwork is returned to their school:

1. Educators may pick up artwork from the State Capitol on the YAM takedown day – March 2, 2013 directly following the reception.

2. Educators may make arrangements with their YAM Volunteers for the return of the artwork.3. Educators that wish to have artwork returned by mail should include

return postage (and or stamps) and school address label for quick return – (No metered mail). 4. The YAM Volunteer located in the area nearest to the educator’s school that received the artwork will return

the artwork. 5. If no return arrangements have been made (i.e. Postage, delivery or pick-up) the artwork will become

property of The Kansas Art Education Association.

Additional Youth Art Month Activities Use the Mayor Proclamation enclosed to have your Mayor DeclareYouth Art Month in your community

and send us a photocopy with your artwork.

Send in the Press Release enclosed along with your student’s picture with theirart work to your local newspaper and send us a copy with your artwork. (Please make sure you give Sargent Art credit for sponsoring the prizes for the event)

Host an art exhibit in a public place: libraries, banks, education centers.

Contact your local legislator and offer to loan them student artwork to display for the month of March.

Take your class on a special art field trip.

Hold a parent/child hands-on art workshop.

Display a student art exhibit on the Internet!

Invite the student and their parents to the OPENING RECEPTION held at the Capitol building in Topeka on March 2, 2012 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Awards will be presented at 2:30. Also, send a press release to your newspaper with the student’s picture. (Invitation attached below)

Everyone throughout the state should take this opportunity to represent the quality art education going on throughout the state by submitting artwork and taking part in this celebration. In recent years, record numbers of teachers have submitted work.

How to request a YAM Mayoral Proclamation or School Board Resolution:1. Write a letter. Include the suggested proclamation and/or endorsement. (see attached one)2. Make a follow up call. One week later is suggested.3. Your major will read the information, approve the proclamation and have it prepared for his/ her

signature. After you pick it up duplicate it for distribution. 4. Include an appearance request. The mayor’s secretary will probably contact you regarding this matter.5. The Board of Education will usually add the request to the agenda.

Public officials are usually eager to participate in YAM, if you will just ask them.

WHEREAS, art education contributes powerful educational benefits to allelementary and secondary students including the following:

« Art education develops students’ creative problem-solving and criticalthinking abilities;

The art exhibit will have a Reception for student artists, their families, and educators Saturday, March 2, 2013from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Reception will be held in Topeka at the State Capitol Building, 900 S.W. Jackson. The student artists attending the reception will receive an honorary badge and light refreshments will be served. This event would be a wonderful opportunity for you to show support for the arts in your school/ community!

Because of construction at the Capital Building, the artwork will only be on display at the reception on the 31st. We hope you will try to make it to this special event. Sincerely,

LOCAL STUDENTS HONORED WITH ART AWARDS

Carlea Holt, junior from Cheney High School won a 2nd place art award and Allyson Hallowell, junior won a 3rd place art award for their participation in the Youth Art Month Flag Contest. The awards will be presented at a ceremony held at the state capital on March 31st. Amanda Martin, Jessica Voss, Becca Kopper, Kelsey Reida, Katie Slusser, Jaiden Ferguson, Tasha Dawson and Ariel Abbott all won honorable mentions for their entries.

The Kansas Art Education Association had over three hundred entries submitted for its annual Youth Art Month flag contest. The winning flag entries will be on display at the state capital on March 31 as well as be included in a display at the National Art Education Associations conference in NYC.

The KAEA flag contest if part of the national event “Schools Flags Across the U.S.. Flying High” organized by the Council for Art Education Inc. to promote and support quality art education for all students. This year’s theme for the event is “Art Shapes the World” the flag design was required to reflect the theme as well as be representative of the state of Kansas. A celebration will be held in Washington, DC the first week in March to honor student designers.

LOCAL STUDENT TO HAVE ART DISPLAYED AT THE STATE CAPITAL CHENEY HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH ART MONTH ACTIVITIES

(Student Name),(grade) from ( ) School will have art work on display as part of the Kansas Art Education Associations Youth Art Month celebration at the state capital on March 31, 2012. Youth Art Month is celebrated every March to emphasis the importance of a great quality art education programs in schools. Art education helps promote higher level thinking skills and teach children that complex forms of problems are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and opportunity. Art education equips students to form mental images, which can be used to solve problems- an ability that chemists, engineers, and architects use to create models and inventors use to think of new ideas.

Every teacher from the state of Kansas is eligible to submit one piece or art work from each school they teach at to be part of the display. Students of KAEA member’s art will be judged by a panel of judges and Sargent Art will be awarding prizes to the top winners in each of the three categories Elementary, Middle School and High School. Student winners and their teachers in each category will receive art supplies. The overall grand prize winner will win an all-expense paid trip to New York City, organized by Sargent Art. The student winner will get to take one parent and their art teacher on the trip with them. While in New York students will visit art museums, attractions and attend a Broadway play. The Kansas Art Education Association had over two hundred entries submitted for in last year’s contests.

Awards will be handed out by Kansas’s very own Vincent YAM-Gogh at a reception that goes from 2 to 4 pm at the State Capital, light refreshments will be served and there will be additional art activities for everyone to participate in. The event is open to the public.

YAM was created in 1961 by the ACMI, a non- profit association art and craft material manufacturers, in cooperation with the National Art Education Association, it is an annual observation that is celebrated nationally with a variety of activities. Cheney High School will also be having a special display of art work at the Cheney Public Library, School Board Office, and business thru out town.

Dear KAEA member,

Your students are invited to join Kansas students from all across the state to participate in the annual Youth ART Month flag design contest. Youth Art Month is a nationally observed celebration of the visual arts and is celebrated each year during the month of March. Its goal is to emphasize the value of visual art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs.

This year we are expanding the Kansas YAM flag contest. Flag entries will be divided into three different grade levels Elementary K-5, Middle level 6-8 and High School 9-12. A winner will be chosen for each level. The Student flag designer and their teacher will receive a prize courtesy of Molly Hawkins Wholesale Art Supplies. From these three winners, we will select one overall Grand Prize winner. The Grand Prize winner’s design will be made into the Kansas YAM flag which will represent Kansas at the National Art Education Conference in New York City. In March, a National flag event will be held in Washington DC and the Grand Prize flag designer be recognized in a ceremony.

Space permitting we hope to display all flag entries at the state capital during our Youth Art Month Celebration on Saturday, March 31st, 2012.

Who Can Participate: Students of current Kansas Art Education Association Members (membership has it’s perks)

The flag theme for 2012 is “Art Shapes the World” students need to design a colorful flag that incorporates the theme and also represents the state of KS.

Copyrighted material (such as comic strip characters or team logos) cannot be published

Your design should include the Youth Art Month Logo

Media: Any two dimensional Media such as markers, watercolors, acrylic, tempera, pastels, crayon, chalk, pencils, collage or computer graphics. NO photography please.

ARTWORK: Submit all artwork on 8.5 x 11 inch unlined white paper. It is important not to fold the artwork for mailing and the entry forms below must be completed and taped to the art work. The label in the bottom right hand corner and the release form taped to the back.
