Define Your SpaceNote what elements will not be changing. First, you need to take into account everything that will be

staying in the room, including flooring,window treatments, fabric,wallcoverings, countertops and brick or

stone accents. This will help you to consider what colors are already part of the overall room scheme.

Note the architecture of your space. What does your room say on its own? Is it modern,classic, colonial?

Do you want to enhance the feeling of the space or create an entirely new feeling?

Note the open transitions that exist into other rooms. Does this room open to other rooms or hallways?

Color can change from room to room,but be aware how adjacent rooms may complement or clash.

Establish a transition color scheme so all the rooms and spaces move nicely.

What is your inspiration for this space?How will the room be used? Consider the functionality of the room when starting to select color.

Will there be a lot of reading done in this space? Will it be used for family congregating or more

formal entertainment?

Consider Lighting SourcesView the color in natural light.A room that is

bathed in natural light changes throughout the

day impacting the actual appearance of color in

your room. Rooms with northern exposures

pull in cool light while rooms with southern

exposures have more of a tendency to drain a

color’s vibrancy.

Take into account the artificial lighting used in

the room. Incandescent bulbs tend to make col-

ors appear more warm,while halogen light does

the opposite. Lampshades also make a difference.

A white paper shade gives off cooler light and a

creamy,off-white shade provides a warmer light.

Once you’ve viewed the colors in their actual

environment you will get a true sense of the

feeling they create.

Create a Mini Color Scheme BoardCollect chip samples of the colors you’ve

selected. If you need a larger area to view, buy

small paint samples and paint your colors on an

oversized board. Then gather samples of any

fabric, flooring,or wall covering that you may

use and lay the elements together,overlapping

your colors.

Now step back and look at the total palette

you’ve created. This is the best way to

determine if your selections truly create the

look that you’ve envisioned with the rest of

the elements in your room.
