A BOY’S FIRST LOVESam Neyer, 12, lifts a bucket of food to bring to his cattle on Sept. 17, 2010 outside his home in Shepherd, Mich. Neyer is a third generation farmer on his family’s dairy farm. “I want to be a farmer when I grow up,” Sam said. “I want to take my dad’s job and expand the farm like he did.”

Sam Neyer of Shepherd, Mich. is already confident in his career choice at age

13. In fact, the family busi-ness harnessed Sam’s interest when he was only a toddler. “I want to be a farmer when I grow up,” Sam said. “I want to take my dad’s job and expand the farm like he did.” Neyer Dairy Farms is a third generation farm with all three generations active in work. The Neyer family owns roughly 1,200 cattle over two locations and milk 1,000. Sam’s main job is to feed the baby cat-tle and to clean each stall. He

recently saved enough money to buy his own tractor and plow. “I feel farming is one of the most important jobs in the world,” he said. Sam is in the eighth at Sacred Heart Academy in Mount Pleasant. During the school year, he spends his weekends on the farm and works every day over the sum-

mer. He already looks ahead to attending college and Michigan State University to study agricultural science. Although his maturity and life is different from many other 13 year-olds, Sam is still a normal teenager. What makes him different, however, is that he already started his career and found his first love.

“I feel farming is one of the most important jobs in the world.”

In addition to the hundreds of cattle on the farm, Neyer and his family raise several in their backyard.

THE POWER OFPRAYER

God saved Montel Beavers. The Jackson teen-ager said he remem-

bers the exact moment during a Wednesday evening service when he was 10 years old. “I felt like I needed to be saved because I knew if God came back, I wouldn’t go to Heaven,” Beavers, 15, said. Since that point, Bea-vers has devoted his life to serv-ing God and his ministry. He spends most days volunteer-ing or praying at his parish the Church of God, 565 Robinson.

His passion of reli-gion makes him different from other teenagers, Beavers said. “(My religion) saved me and prevented me from doing things other teens are doing now a days, like drinking,” he said. Although Beavers joins oth-er teenagers in his church’s Youth Group and Gospel Choir, he hopes others his age will consider and think about religion on a deeper level. “I think people need to hear the Gospel,” he said. “God wants you to be saved and wants you to serve Him.”
