Our TOuriNg PhilOSOPhyWe believe travel is not just about seeing a new destination, it is about experiencing it. We believe famous landmarks are just the beginning of the itinerary, that meeting locals, exploring quintessential villages and simply relaxing in street-side cafes are equally important. We believe a traveller should be able to indulge in their own sense of adventure with a flexible tour that leaves time for personal interest stops, and that a traditional inn filled with the aroma of country cooking is far superior to a mainstream hotel. We believe you can learn more about a country in 15 minutes on the back roads than you can in two hours on the freeway!

SMAll grOuP TOurSBack-Roads Touring Company is a UK based tour operator which has been running high quality small group tours in the UK and Europe for over 22 years. There are a plethora of travel options available in the UK and Europe, however, few tour companies offer the experience of travelling in small, intimate groups of no more than 16 passengers accompanied by a professional guide. A Back-Roads tour is a unique touring experience. We not only take you to well known historic cities, castles and popular sites but we are also able to access lesser known regions, taking you behind the tourist facade. A small group is a less intrusive way to travel and offers a more authentic cultural experience. We avoid the motorways wherever possible and prefer to travel through smaller villages and towns so that you may engage with the locals and experience their way of life. Our tours are regionally focused and designed to be more leisurely in pace with no long travel days or early dawn starts. There is always time for another glass of wine or unscheduled stop! We have included most entrance fees and lots of meals to offer great value for money. Whether you are travelling solo or with a partner or friend, we can assure you that once you have experienced a Back-Roads tour you, like so many of our guests, will want to travel with us again.

ACCOMMODATiONYou will notice a significant difference in the quality and individuality of our accommodation from those hotels utilised on a typical coach tour. The Back-Roads team have hand-picked a range of hotels which are more personable, smaller in size and yet possess a special charm, local style or unique history. A hotel is more than a bed at the end of the day, it is a home away from home where you should be made to feel welcome and comfortable. We have therefore chosen properties that are inviting and are of a superior standard ranging from traditional inns, country manor houses, family run guesthouses, hotels in period buildings and even a few castles! For this reason the rooms may vary in size, not all will have lifts and the bathrooms might be smaller than those you are used to at home. However, we can assure you that you will love their warm ambience and fantastic locations.

rElAXiNg iTiNErAriESUnlike large coach tours, Back-Roads Touring has specifically designed these itineraries with plenty of free time and flexibility. Each day varies, however, our touring day typically starts at 9am and we usually arrive back to our nightly accommodation early in the evening so there is time for you to relax before dinner. We also include free days on our longer itineraries so you have plenty of time to unwind, relax and really absorb your fantastic surroundings. We believe a tour should be a stress-free holiday so we take our time to explore the local regions we travel through.

grEAT FOODOne of the best things about travelling to new destinations is having the opportunity to experience the local cuisine. As you travel with like-minded companions through some of the best gourmet destinations in Europe, there will be ample opportunity to taste the local specialities. We include a delicious breakfast daily and several dinners at the hotel or a locally recommended restaurant so you can enjoy the experience with your travelling companions. Try the paella in Spain, pasta in Italy and seafood in Cornwall – we can guarantee our meals will whet your appetite and will be one the highlights of your tour.

TrAvEl AWAy FrOM ThE TOuriST FAÇADE Travelling in a small mini-coach means that Back-Roads is able to access pretty country villages and medieval city centres the large coach groups just cannot access. We can typically go anywhere a car can so you will be transported to

areas away from the usual tourist masses and discover the real country. We endeavour to avoid motorways wherever possible and travel down smaller country lanes and along the scenic route. If you fancy a diversion from the mainstream then let us take you away from the tourist façade!

PErSONAl EXPEriENCESA Back-Roads tour is a truly unique way to experience Europe. Travelling in a small group and getting behind the tourist façade is only the beginning of your experience. We will not treat you like just another number and will take the time to get to know your interests so the occasional detour or change in itinerary is possible to add that certain ‘wow’ factor to your holiday. Visit the local farmers market, stop in at a traditional inn for lunch, take the scenic route or meet a local character or two! All this is possible on a Back-Roads Tour. Our itineraries offer a degree of flexibility and our guides the personal touch. Is there any other way to travel?

SAFE & SECurE TOuriNgIt is important to know that you are travelling with a reputable touring company and that you will be taken care of whilst on tour. Back-Roads is a British company that has been operating in Europe for over 20 years. During this time we have maintained an impeccable record for customer safety. All our vehicles meet the strictest EU regulations and all driver/guides pass the relevant EU driving examinations and go through training with Back-Roads before they lead a tour. Once you book a tour with Back-Roads you can feel safe and secure knowing that you are travelling with a company that takes your health and safety very seriously and maintains an excellent reputation within the industry.

WalESGetting on the Welsh back roads really does mean rubbing shoulders with evocative scenery, extraordinary architecture, glorious flora, old fashioned country hospitality and of course the tongue-twisting place names. From the mining heritage in the south to the stunning coastline in the west and the towering peaks, plummeting waterfalls and mythical lakes of Snowdonia in the north. Wales is a fascinating visit, where you can stroll along handsome Victorian seaside resorts, visit historic castle towns and explore the regions Celtic and Viking past.

Cardiff Bay

day 1 Brecon Beacons. We enter Wales and go back 2000 years to when Caerleon was the capital of a Roman Province; its barracks, baths and amphitheatre are all still there to visit. We learn about Celtic history and cultural heritage, and then we explore Wales’s industrial development, at the country’s most popular heritage attraction – St Fagan’s Museum of Welsh Life. We then enjoy a panoramic tour of the capital, Cardiff, including the recently reclaimed Cardiff Bay and Docks area, boasting the marvellous Millennium Centre and Assembly Building. Then, a drive to our hotel in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons. (D)

day 2 Brecon Beacons. Today we go from the lowest to the highest, from the depths of the Big Pit to the highest road in the country. From barbarity to culture; lunch at the inn where rebels were hung from the beams, then to afternoon tea just over the border in Hay on Wye, a town where every other shop is a quaint bookstore. As no vehicle larger than a Back-Roads coach can navigate the country roads in this region, we relish a true ‘Back-Roads Experience’ as we return to our traditional accommodation nearby. (B)

day 3 snowdonia. We journey through Brecon itself and along the Abergwesyn Pass – recently voted Britain’s most scenic drive. We travel

to the holiday resort of Aberystwyth and the Ceredigion Heritage Coast before continuing on through the heart of Wales. We visit the eccentric Portmeirion, a stunning village created by the architect Clough Williams-Ellis. Some might recognise it as the location for the original hit TV series The Prisoner. Catch the first glimpse of the mountains as we visit Ty Mawr Wybrnant, a traditional stone-built upland farmhouse nestled in the beautiful Conwy Valley where you may see how people lived in ancient times. We continue our journey to the attractive Victorian village Betws-y-Coed, set amongst a perfect outdoor setting with cascading waterfalls, hill-top lakes, river pools and ancient bridges. We stay in a local hotel in the heart of the Snowdonia region. (B/D)

day 4 snowdonia. Today’s venture through Snowdonia National Park takes us through rugged landscape to tales from history as we visit the sites where King Edward I of England conquered the Welsh Princes with the help of his new castles at Caernarfon and Conwy. We cannot visit Wales without passing the small famous town with a long name Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrn-drobwllllantysiliogogogoch. We continue with a spellbinding climb to the summit of the Great Worm (Orme to the locals) to admire the stunning views over the Irish Sea and

Snowdonia. We then return to our accommodation passing through the Conwy Valley, with a pleasant stop at Bodnant Gardens en route. (B)

day 5 shrewsBury. We take one last circuit of Snowdonia, to admire its dramatic scenery and perhaps take a short walk along one of its mountain trails before returning to the coach for our drive over the Llanberris Pass. We head southward to the spectacular lake at Bala before arriving at Powis Castle, home to the Earl of Powis and noted for its attractive gardens. From here it is but a short hop over the border to England and to the market town and birthplace of Charles Darwin, Shrewsbury. (B/D)

day 6 sTraTford-upon-avon. After a morning stroll through the town of cobbled streets, old castle and timbered houses on to the home of England’s famous playwright, Shakespeare’s Stratford-Upon-Avon. Explore the town and visit one of the houses associated with Shakespeare’s time. We continue through the English countryside and past Chequers, the official home of the Prime Minister and villages that inspired Roald Dahl. See if you can spot film locations from British films and television shows such as Four Weddings and a Funeral and Midsomer Murders. Our tour then concludes in London. (B)

We travelled with Back-Roads in April & May 2010 in Scotland and England – the tours we were on were great and what we had hoped for! A highlight was our a marvellous farm stay... rooms, atmosphere, meals, hosts and meals. We could remark on more details of the tours but the important items of guides, drivers, accommodation, destinations, accurate and entertaining information... we give top marks. Hopefully we can take advantage of more tours. Being off those awful motorways, smaller groups, interesting places to stay and explore, great guides and reasonable prices will be our measure for the future.

ScOtlaNdA land of intrigue, drama, warmth and culture that will enchant visitors of all ages and interests. Scotland is a captivating place of immense contrasts and is surely one of the most beautiful and historically fascinating countries in the world. From vibrant Glasgow and refined Edinburgh to the gentle rolling hills, dramatic coasts, towering mountains, breath-taking lochs and heather covered highlands all richly peppered with ancient castles, villages, and abbeys tell the tale of it’s often turbulent history. Beyond the mainland, the Western Isles and Orkneys retain much of their Norse character and offer some of Scotland’s most seductive scenery and mythical heritage.

day 1 orkney. Departing from Inverness, we travel through the unspoilt Northern Highlands countryside. We pass through charming towns by beautiful lochs as we enjoy a landscape rich with the remains of pre-historic occupation. Also in this area lies the Castle of Mey, summer home of the late Queen Mother. Arriving at Scotland’s northern-most tip, we catch the ferry to the Orkney Islands. (B)

The Orkneys are perhaps most renowned for their amazing archaeological sites and we go back in time to explore the Neolithic stone circles of the Ring of Brodgar, the Stones of Stenness and the tomb of Maeshowe. Then, to Skara Brae to see the ten stone-age houses. Huge fortified brochs are scattered throughout the islands but we can get inside one at Gurness. It also home to one of Scotland’s best distilleries, Highland Park Distillery. We travel down through the southern Orkney isles and see Scapa Flow, a

huge natural harbour. Here there’s the Italian Chapel, originally a couple of old Nissen huts, decorated in imaginative style by Italian prisoners of war. (B/D)

day 4 inverness. After taking the morning ferry back to the mainland, we journey through Europe’s last great wilderness to be astounded by its stark beauty. We see historic sites such as Dunrobin Castle and the ninety foot high statue of the First Duke of Sutherland as well as some of the small fishing and crafting settlements of this remote region. Other highlights include Loch Fleet where we might catch sight of the seals and the Dornoch and Cromarty Firths. We then return to Inverness where our tour concludes. (B)

My daughter and I went on a tour of England and Scotland with Jeremy as our guide. The man truly deserves a saint hood at the very least. The tour was fascinating, everything we had hoped, and he was unfailingly polite, informative, cheerful and patient.

day 1 coTswolds. After London, there is no better introduction to England than Oxford. The ‘city of dreaming spires’ is beautiful but has more to offer than just looks. Its university testament to England’s rich history. Poets and politicians, artists and scientists – they’ve been coming here for over 800 years. We see the grandest of all Oxford’s colleges, Christ Church, once the home of Lewis Carroll, before enjoying a guided walk of the city. After lunch we wind our way through the lovely, honey-coloured villages and little towns of the Cotswold Hills. Our vehicles allow us to get down narrow country lanes as we travel to our Cotswold accommodation. (B)

day 2 chesTer. After waking in this idyllic place we leave the Cotswolds to drive across the fruit growing Vale of Evesham to Worcester. Off the tourist trail here, we enjoy a visit to one of England’s quietest but most interesting cathedrals, and your guide will show you the tomb of infamous King John who signed the Magna Carta. We continue our journey north to the town of Much Wenlock. Impossibly quaint, this little town is the birthplace of the modern Olympics! We have the chance to visit a little museum explaining why, before we take a short drive to Ironbridge, once the cradle of the Industrial Revolution and now a UNESCO World Heritage

Site. We step back to times gone by as we visit its stunning gorge and local Victorian museums that bring Britain’s industrial heritage to life. We finish today by driving across lush dairy country to historic Chester and our comfortable accommodation. (B/D)

day 3 chesTer. Leaving proper exploration of Chester till tomorrow, be prepared to be awe-struck as we travel across the border into Wales to explore Snowdonia National Park, an area of outstanding beauty. This National Park is gathered around the highest mountain in England and Wales, Snowdon. It has narrow mountain passes, gushing streams (or ‘nants’), cascading waterfalls, sheep-covered uplands and verdant, hidden valleys that claim the resting place of the real King Arthur. Listen out for the ancient language of Arthur’s time in this corner of Britain that keeps its ancient Welsh culture. We explore it in true Back-Roads fashion, taking you beyond the regular tourist haunts down tracks and paths that will have you gasping! This afternoon we continue back to Chester along the North Wales coast, visiting the most complete walled town in Britain, Conwy, and its stark 13th century castle. (B)

day 4 york. This morning we explore charming Chester, a city whose 2000 year-old history is on display like no other. Complete medieval walls surround the city on Roman foundations from which the old Roman amphitheatre, the most complete in Britain, can be seen. We have time to dip into the cathedral, founded in the 7th century, or to shop in Chester’s unique Rows. Britain’s first shopping mall, these are rows of medieval, ‘black and white’ buildings with covered walkways, built upon Roman cellars that are accessed from the street. This is shopping the Back-Roads way. Hitting the road again, we travel east across England’s backbone, the Pennine hills, to proud Yorkshire and the Bronte parsonage at Haworth. Here we go back in time to the world that inspired the Bronte sisters to write the likes of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. After visiting their parsonage home, we explore the steep little town beneath it and drive to the nearby moors which they loved so. On the way to tonight’s hotel in York we pass through the flower capital of the north, Harrogate, a colourful spa town with a very British, genteel reputation. (B/D)

day 5 york. Get your cameras ready as we investigate this fascinating city, the historic capital of northern England. York is home to the largest Gothic structure north of

the Alps, the medieval Minster that’s a must-see for anyone visiting The North. This morning your guide will take you through the old city and point out the highlights, including the city walls, York Castle Museum, the Jorvik (Viking) Centre, Clifford’s Tower and the famous Shambles, which gets its name from the bloody medieval butchers’ shops that once lined this narrow, cobbled street. This afternoon we have some free time to revisit some of these places or go see the National Railways Museum. You may prefer just to wander through the winding pedestrian streets, take tea at the world famous Betty’s Tearooms or something stronger in one of York’s numerous historic pubs. (B)

day 6 lake disTricT. A real Back-Roads day today. First we explore the small, ancient, market town of Richmond and its impressive Norman Castle. Dating from 1071, it was here that the Scottish king William (the lion) was imprisoned after his capture by the English in 1174. The stark brutal architecture reflects a barbaric age, but gathered around the hill on which the castle squats is a much friendlier place, dominated by a large market square and picturesque stone buildings that tell stories of a long history of a Yorkshire town and its rural hinterland. From Richmond we go up fell and down dale into the Yorkshire Dales National Park. As we

travel along Swaledale (a Yorkshire valley) and climb the bare hills (fells) we see hedgerows replaced by miles and miles of dry-stone walls, whose course reflects a system of land ownership that goes back to Viking days. As always, our mini-coach will take the less frequented roads over this stunning landscape through little Yorkshire villages to our destination in Cumbria, England’s Lake District and our home for the next two nights. (B/D)

day 7 lake disTricT. Today’s journey through England’s Lake District will provide a feast of photographic opportunities as we visit waterfalls, quaint local villages, and travel through panoramic and dramatic countryside. Our highlights include Grasmere, where we pay homage to the life and work of William Wordsworth at Dove Cottage, the Wordsworth Museum and Art Gallery. We also stop at the mystical Castlerigg Stone Circle, one of the British Isles’ most ancient, erected 5000 years ago during the Neolithic period. We immerse ourselves in the stunning natural beauty of the region before returning to Windermere. Enjoy a glass of wine or local ale in a local pub and explore the local town under your own steam before our final group evening meal. (B/D)

day 8 edinBurgh. We say goodbye to the truly memorable Lakes as we head north to Scotland and its Border and Lowland country. This wild landscape offers us an opportunity to see the towns and castles of this once lawless landscape of Border ‘Reivers’ immortalised in the novelist Walter Scott’s work. We visit the writer’s romantic home at Abbotsford before arriving into Edinburgh. This afternoon we enjoy a panoramic tour of Scotland’s beautiful capital city, which is home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites. (B)

Highlights of central Belfast include the Titanic Quarter, as well as a drive through this divided city with a trip up the Falls Road and down the Shankill Road then learn more about the history of the area as we pass the famed political wall murals. This afternoon we visit the intriguing Giant’s Causeway, a World Heritage Site and the jewel in the crown of the fabulous coast of Antrim. The sheer strangeness of the place and the bizarre regularity of the 37,000 basalt columns have made it the subject of many legends. Finally, we head to our friendly Irish accommodation along the winsome Northern Ireland coastline. (B)

day 3 derry area. This morning we enjoy a historical guided walk along the ancient city walls of Derry Our coastal drive will take us to the Inishowen Peninsula in Donegal, a lesser known, but one of the most enchanting and beautiful parts of Ireland. The day continues with a visit to an Iron Age fort, Grianan Aileach, offering stunning views of the nearby Loughs. From there, we travel to the home of the last Gaelic chieftain at Buncrana, then through the breathtaking mountain pass of the Mamore Gap. At the Isle of Doagh Visitor Centre we learn more about the Irish Famine and local customs of the area. We end our touring day with a lovely scenic drive. (B)

day 4 sligo. Our day commences at the Ulster-American Folk Park. Arguably one of the best of its kind, it examines why two million people left Ulster for the New World in the 18th and 19th centuries. The park has more than thirty historic buildings, including a variety of thatched Irish cottages, a Pennsylvanian farmstead, a reconstructed shopping street and a full size replica emigrant ship. In addition, costumed guides and demonstrators re-enact this bygone era, bringing it back to life. We then traverse through County Fermanagh, along the shores of Lough Erne, to the Sligo area and into W.B.Yeats country. For those already familiar with

the great 20th century poet, a visit to sites associated with him will be a real highlight including Drumcliffe Church, located at the foot of magnificent Ben Bulben and the location of Yeat’s grave, as well as Parkes Castle, a well preserved 17th century fortified Plantation manor house. (B/D)

day 5 galway. It is a relaxing drive to the picturesque 18th century town of Westport, in County Mayo, where we will enjoy a rest before heading westward towards Connemara. The west of Ireland is one of the principle motivations for visiting the country and the Connemara region is considered by many to be ‘the best of the west’. Connemara is much visited, but there are many scenic back roads we travel down, such as the spectacular Sky Road overlooking Clifden Bay. There are also other less frequented attractions in the area including Roundstone, a picturesque fishing village. If we have time, we will visit the modest traditional cottage of Patrick Pearce, father of independent Ireland and leader of the 1916 uprising. We complete today’s tour in the wonderful city of Galway. (B)

day 6 galway. After a hearty breakfast there is time to enjoy the freedom of Galway City on a day of ‘organised independence’. Your guide will offer advice on how to make the most of this small jewel in Ireland’s crown. Galway is a ‘walking city’ so

you may enjoy wandering its shopping alleyways, cathedral, waterfront areas and local pubs at your own pace. (B)

day 7 killarney. We have a wonderful day planned ahead, with a typical Back-Roads Touring mix of must-see icons and sights, as well as a range of additional attractions that are not always visited by the tourist masses. Following the coastal road we visit some traditional Galway Bay harbours such as the charming Kinvara and then tour through the lunar-like landscape of the Burren, including a stop at the prehistoric burial site of the Poulnabrone Portal Tomb. Our day will include a visit to the world-famed Cliffs of Moher as we travel to the vibrant little town of Killarney. (B/D)

day 8 killarney. This part of Ireland is a magnet for visitors attracted by the incredible scenery of the area. We spend most of our time on the uncrowded Dingle Peninsula. We uncover ancient churches, forts, local arts and craft centres and beautiful beaches. Highlights will include a visit to the Blasket Islands Centre and the Louis Mulcahy pottery studio. Closer to Killarney, the views are spectacular, including the famous ‘Ladies View’ of the Killarney Lakes. (B)

day 9 Blarney. Just when you thought that the scenery you’ve seen couldn’t be bettered, we make a good attempt at doing so! We travel from

Killarney to the enchanting town of Kenmare, to explore at your leisure. Perhaps visit the lace museum or investigate the ancient Druidic stone circle. Leaving Kenmare we journey over the breathtaking Healey Pass, a spectacular drive to Bantry Bay and Bantry House. Finally, no Irish tour would be complete without at least a cursory visit to Blarney Castle. If you wish you can enjoy the Castle at leisure or explore the village. (B/D)

day 10 Blarney. The harbour of Kinsale, considered by some to be the prettiest in Ireland, is our first stop of the day. The town is renowned as the gourmet centre of Ireland but it also has a fascinating history. In the afternoon we travel through the city of Cork to nearby Cobh, a naval base during the Napoleonic wars and a major emigration port and is where the ill-fated Titanic set out across the Atlantic. Many of the Irish who emigrated to North America between 1848 and 1950 left from this port and many more men, women and children were deported from here to the penal colonies in Australia. (B)

day 11 kilkenny. We start today’s tour at one of Ireland’s popular icons, The Rock of Cashel, located on a high rocky outcrop overlooking the plains of Tipperary. You can explore the site, which incorporates the ruins of a medieval cathedral, a beautiful Romanesque church and a striking

round tower. Next, we travel through rural Tipperary to Kilkenny, Ireland’s ‘most perfect medieval city’ and our resting place for this evening. There is plenty of time to relax and explore the many sights here, including the castle, the 13th century St. Canice’s Cathedral, Rothe House and Black Abbey and the Kilkenny Design Centre, offering the best of Irish crafts. (B/D)

day 12 duBlin. Before returning to Dublin, we will cross the Wicklow Mountains to Glendalough where we enjoy an informative guided tour. From here we drive via the Military Road, traversing some of the wilder terrain of the Wicklows, to the Sally Gap. We then descend to the Powerscourt Estate with its beautiful formal gardens. From here it is only a short journey to Dublin. (B)

This morning your guide will introduce you to some of the highlights of the old town, resplendent with its 18th century facades. This afternoon we head out of the city to get our first “taste” of what the city is renowned for – its wines – in the Médoc wine-growing area in the region. This evening you are free to enjoy Bordeaux at leisure. (B)

day 3 Bayonne/BiarriTz. This morning we enter the Basque Country. We head for historic Bayonne, the cultural capital of the Basque country on the French side of the Pyrénées. Very close by, but very different in atmosphere, is the fashionable summer resort of Biarritz set as it is in this unspoilt corner of the country so close to the Spanish border. (B/D)

day 4 Bayonne/BiarriTz. Today is a day of rest and relaxation for you to enjoy the attractions of this delightful corner of France. You might want to spend the day on the beach, or perhaps explore the attractions of the area in more depth and delve into its Basque heritage. (B)

day 5 Toulouse. This morning we depart the Atlantic coast and head east on our way to Toulouse. We take time to stop in Pau, a charming town with an impressive castle, the Château de Pau, with links to Henri IV, Napoléon and Marie Antoinette. Then we reach lovely Toulouse, known as the “Ville Rose” – the Pink City – so named because of the distinctive brickwork seen all over the city. (B/D)

day 6 Toulouse. A real treat is in store today as we head to Carcassonne, a mighty fortified city which stands majestically on a hill overlooking the wonderful landscapes of the Languedoc and the distant Pyrénées. And being in this area of France, we have some time to visit the fascinating Rennes-le-Château, the mysterious town which has become something of a place of pilgrimage since The Da Vinci Code. (B)

day 7 sarlaT. We say farewell to Toulouse this morning as we make our way first to the fine city of Albi. Its 13th century Cathédrale Sainte Cécile is reputedly the largest brick building in the world. The town has many charms including the fabulous Toulouse-Lautrec Museum, housing many of the post-impressionist artist’s greatest works. As we make our way to Sarlat we hope to have time to at least drive through Cahors famous for the Pont Valentré, a magnificent fortified bridge. (B/D)

day 8 sarlaT. Sarlat is one of the most attractive towns in France and it is a pleasure to visit the old town, dating from both medieval and renaissance times. Lose yourself in the maze of narrow lanes and discover surprises around every corner. But today there is a very special reason to be there – it is Saturday and market day! So relax in this delightful town over a lunch of local produce, washed down with a glass of wine, and spend the rest of the day at leisure. (B)

day 9 angouleme. Today we go further into the Dordogne, a beautiful and popular region full of châteaux, medieval towns and villages and unspoiled countryside. We head first to the awe-inspiring Lascaux Caves, which contain some of the oldest and finest prehistoric art in the world. We continue our prehistoric explorations to the small village of Les Eyzies. We can visit the wonderful National Museum of Prehistory and follow the prehistoric “royal road” which winds between the river and the rocks, an unforgettable UNESCO World Heritage Site. Finally we arrive in Angoulème. (B/D)

day 10 Bordeaux. Before we make our way back to Bordeaux, we have more treats in store. The town of Cognac is of course famous all over the world for the brandy it has been producing here for the past 300 years. We enjoy a guided tour of one of the cognac houses – Rémy Martin, Martell, Hennessey and all the famous names can be found here – and, of course, sample the final product. From here we make our final visit in Saintes, famous for its fascinating Roman history, and the ruins of its great amphitheatre and the incredible Arch of Germanicus. After lunch we make our way back to Bordeaux. (B)

My wife and I experienced the La Belle France 2010. What a magnificent tour, made all the better by Guide/Driver Andy, who had outstanding knowledge of the tour route and highlights on the way. It was the ability to travel through small villages and small roads which added to the feel of being amongst the ‘real’ people of France. We have experienced a ‘big coach’ tour in Europe. Never again now that we have experienced the Back-Roads Touring option. No early starts and late finishes and no travelling from point to point via major highways. As much comfort on board the mini-bus as on a coach. Highly recommend tours with Back-Roads Touring Company. No need to look elsewhere!

day 1 nice. This morning we drive from Nice along the Corniche to Monaco. On the way we see the stunning Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in St Jean Cap Ferrat. We explore this beautiful French Riviera Palazzo, its nine wonderful gardens and Baroness Ephrussi de Rothschild’s impressive art collection which has transformed the villa into a collector’s paradise. We then continue our journey to the exclusive Monaco, the second smallest country in the world, which has been ruled by the same famous dynasty for 700 years. This glamorous country is truly the playground of the rich and famous. Made up of seven areas, the most recognisable region is Monte Carlo, known for its dazzling harbour and entertainment and where you may spot the odd celebrity relaxing on one of the super yachts moored here. This harbour is also known for hosting the most prestigious Formula One Grand Prix and it is possible to travel along the same roads which make up its circuit (including the infamous tunnel). This is a day of decadence where you may visit the famous Casino, indulge in some shopping or relax with a wine. This afternoon our drive back to Nice, the spectacular centre of the French Riviera, will take us past villages such as the ancient fortified village of Eze, perched high on the hilltops. (D)

day 2 cap d’anTiBes. Our first visit today is to the beautiful village of St Paul de Vence, famous for its herbs and perfumes and picturesque narrow streets. We explore the many boutiques lining the alleyways and the artists’ galleries, surrounded all the while by the aroma of “herbes de Provence”. We stop for lunch in the neighbouring town of Vence, and visit Matisse’s Rosaire Chapel, a sacred art monument which he conceived from 1948-1951 (opening times are restricted). This town has preserved much of its historical heritage and enjoys a unique micro-climate. It will be sure to captivate you as we wander its ancient cobbled streets and alleyways, and admire the 11th century cathedral of St Véran with its mosaic by Marc Chagall, and Chagall’s chapel. (B)

day 3 cap d’anTiBes. Today we spend some time in Cannes, the star of the Riviera made famous by its film festival, glitzy hotels, shopping, beaches and old port – this is a place to be seen! The sheer number of exotic sports cars, designer labels and yachts will astonish you. The city is easy to explore, centred around the old port and is quite compact. Walk down the famous “Croisette” – the boulevard and the beach that extends around the bay or the ‘Rue d’Antibes’ – the main street running through the city. Enjoy a delicious lunch before

day 4 aix-en-provence. We commence our journey today with a drive along the rugged coastline, taking in the most spectacular scenery of the Côte d’Azur, the quintessential Mediterranean playground. We travel down the real back roads discovering sights and experiences otherwise missed from the main highway and avoid the less attractive tourist traps. This afternoon we arrive in the historical and cultural town of Aix-en-Provence where Cezanne once lived. We spend time here to discover its evocative architecture as we walk through its streets concentrating on the old part of the town where most of the city’s highlights can be found, including the Saint Sauveur Cathedrale (legend says it is built on a temple of Apollo) and the site of the former Roman town where ruins of the old medieval ramparts may be viewed. If time permits we also explore the 17th century Mazarin Quarter, once home to the city’s aristocrats and set in a grid pattern it is great for a stroll and the Arbaud Museum is well worth visiting (optional). (B/D)

day 5 aix-en-provence. Today we relax in the yellow-stoned town of Aix-en-Provence. A walking tour takes us in the footsteps of Cézanne, passing hot thermal springs, the Pavillon de Vendôme and the Musée des Tapisseries (tapestry museum), finally reaching Paul Cezanne’s studio. Aix boasts a natural history museum and a museum of fine arts and archaeology which you might choose to visit. Or perhaps you would rather watch the world go by in the shade of the trees lining the Cours Mirabeau. (B)

day 6 avignon. Heading further inland, we follow the Durance River to Avignon, meandering through the spectacular vineyards en route. We pass through Ménerbes, the village immortalised by Peter Mayles in A Year in Provence. Our highlight today is the 14th century walled city of Avignon, once home to the Catholic popes. The presence of the Church transformed the appearance of the old medieval city and the Palais des Papes dominates the old historic centre. Another must see is, of course, the St Bénézet Bridge, subject of the well-know tune “Sur le pont d’Avignon”! (B/D)

day 7 avignon. Whilst wandering through the vineyards of the Côtes-du-Rhône, we visit two of the most spectacularly preserved achievements of the Roman Empire, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites

– the aqueduct of the Pont-du-Gard, and the Roman theatre of Orange. Our classical day will end with a visit to one of the famous wine caves for a tasting before returning to Avignon. (B)

day 8 arles. Today we turn south to the Camargue, our first stop being the fortified village of Aigues-Mortes (Latin for “dead waters”). It was created in the middle of nowhere by St Louis, who set out for the Crusades from here. The Camargue is one of France’s most important areas of natural history, and we might see flamingos and other tropical birds and, of course, the famous horses. Then on to Van Gogh’s Arles, a historic Roman city which also inspired paintings and drawings by Picasso. (B/D)

day 9 arles. This morning enjoy the local sights as we walk through the narrow streets of Arles, seeing scenes painted by Van Gogh himself. The local market is not to be missed and the Roman Amphitheatre, once seating 21,000, is one of the largest and most complete ancient monuments of its kind, rivalling those of Rome itself. The afternoon can be spent at leisure, and there are interesting shops selling regional goods and souvenirs. Alternatively why not sit at a pavement café and sip a glass or two of the local wine. (B)

day 10 arles. Heading into the “Little Alps”, we enjoy the Huguenot stronghold of Les Baux-de-Provence. Situated on a precipice, the town rewards us with a view of “half of Provence”. The village itself is incredible, almost carved out of the very rock of the hilltop. Then we pass through St Rémi de Provence on our way back to Arles. (B/D)

day 11 nice. As we return to Nice, we pay a brief visit to Marseille and its old port, known as the gateway to the Orient and Africa. Then we follow the scenic coastal road along the Côte d’Azur, passing through the famous towns and traditional villages sitting beside the sea, on our way back to Nice. (B)

ItalyTantalising and emotive, the vivacious dolce vita of Italy will steal your heart from the moment you arrive. Its sumptuous rustic Tuscan, Umbrian and Alpine landscapes, spectacular heritage, passion for rich food, wine and culture, all bathed in unique dreamy light, have been seducing visitors for the past three thousand years. Italy is a country of wonderful contrasts. From the romance of Venice, the creativity of Florence, the fashion of Milan the majesty of Rome and the history of Sicily. There are few countries as fascinating or rewarding to explore and there’s no better way to get under the skin of Italy than to journey amongst its back roads. Italy truly is, “Il Bel Paese” (the Beautiful Country).

Tuscan Landscape

day 1 florence. Embrace the charisma and colour of Florence from the moment you arrive. Alive with culture, art, theatre, delicious food and first class shopping, it is the capital of the Tuscan region and an ideal base for the next two nights. Head to the hotel at your leisure to relax and recover from your flight, before meeting the group this evening to enjoy the first of many delicious dinners. (D)

day 2 florence. Savour an Italian cappuccino over breakfast before embarking on a fascinating walking tour of Florence, Italy’s outdoor museum. Marvel at the Ponte Vecchio, the beautiful bridge spanning the River Arno. Visit the Uffizi Art Gallery, with its showcase collection bequeathed to the people of Florence by the Medici family, and lose yourself amid masterpieces by some of the greatest artists who have ever lived including Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Rembrandt. Tonight you are free to choose from one of Florence’s many fabulous restaurants and wander the streets of this vibrant city. (B)

back and soak up the atmosphere over coffee in the Piazza del Duomo. We take a picturesque drive to Lucca after lunch and arrive at our stunning base for the next two nights. Why not attempt the climb up the 207 steps of the Torre dell’Ore, a 13th-century clock tower, or the 230 challenging steps to the Tower of the Palazzo Guinigi? Alternatively, enjoy a more leisurely stroll around the town’s renaissance walls before our local dinner. (B/D)

day 4 lucca. Today we set out to explore the steep coastline and the five captivating villages that make up the Cinque Terre. One of the highlights of our tour, the villages can be accessed by boat, train or by foot, depending on how adventurous you are feeling. The spell-binding sea vistas and views over this UNESCO World Heritage Site will not fail to leave a lasting impression. (B)

day 5 volTerra. We travel further afield today to an international icon – the extraordinary Leaning Tower of Pisa. This 12th century freestanding bell tower seems to defy gravity and has been attracting visitors for many years. We view the adjoining cathedral, the Baptistery and the decorated Campo Santo, or ‘Holy Field.’ Then take in the rural romance and timeless beauty of the Tuscan countryside on the way to Volterra, a magnificent medieval town perched high on a rocky plateau. You might

want to visit the famous Guarnacci museum with its fascinating collection of Etruscan artefacts before joining the group for tonight’s dinner. (B/D)

day 6 volTerra. Relax and soak up the traditional ambience of Volterra with a cappuccino in the central Piazza dei Priori. Then the grandeur of the Tuscan countryside will continue as we go first to medieval Siena with its breathtaking array of majestic buildings and its famous cathedral. Immerse yourself in the full flavour of Italian cuisine, courtesy of Siena’s abundance of pavement cafes and great eateries. Then on to one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, San Gimignano, with its striking skyline of 800-year-old towers, which evokes images of medieval Tuscany better than anywhere else in the province. Spend some time wandering its cobbled streets before returning to Volterra. (B)

day 7 volTerra. Today there will be time to take in more of the local area at your own pace. Your guide will offer some advice as to what options are available so you can make the most out of your day. Perhaps you would just like to wander through the streets of Volterra, enjoying the local cuisine and shopping, or alternatively there will be an opportunity to explore the coastline of Tuscany with your guide to sun yourself on the beach. Tonight another delicious Italian meal! (B/D)

day 8 florence. Watch the rolling hills adorned with vineyards and olive groves glide past on the way to Chianti, a region that produces some of the country’s best-known wines, including the famous Chianti Classico. day 4 syracuse. Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples is one of the greatest legacies of ancient Greece and is, not surprisingly, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This archaeological treasure-chest comprises a series of beautifully-preserved Doric temples dating back to the 5th century BC, the remains of the Greek city of Akragas. Your local guide will bring the past to life as you explore this stunning historical site. Then we head east towards Syracuse, visiting on the way Caltagirone, an ancient city which has preserved its rich history. However the city is perhaps best-known for its artisans who create masterly works of art in ceramic, a tradition dating back to the 5th century BC. The Museum of Ceramics, displaying a stunning range of artefacts, is well worth a visit. Then we settle into our Syracuse hotel and look forward to exploring the town in the morning. (B)

day 5 giardini naxos. Syracuse, an ancient town by the sea, once rivalled Athens as the most important city of the Greek world. It boasts superb archaeological sites and a delightful historic centre on the island of Ortigia. Not only of great historical importance, being also the city of Archimedes and Aeschylus, in mythology it was here that Artemis changed Arethusa into a spring of water to escape the god Alpheus.

There is plenty to enjoy in Syracuse, and we explore all the main sights this morning. This afternoon we travel further west to the delightful coastal town of Giardini Naxos, famous for its excellent beaches and bustling fishing port, where we stay for the next two nights. (B/D)

day 6 giardini naxos. Our morning destination today is Mount Etna, a slumbering volcano which dominates the landscape for miles around. The highest volcano in Europe, it is one of Sicily’s most iconic sights, and reaching the summit and seeing inside the smoking craters is a thrilling experience. Then we change pace as we spend some time in Taormina, a delightful town built high on the cliffs, offering breathtaking and memorable views over the Mediterranean. Taormina is a busy and fashionable town, with designer shops and many good restaurants and cafes. You might want to visit the splendid Greek Theatre, or perhaps the 13th century Cathedral of San Nicola. After a memorable day, we return to Giardini Naxos for a relaxed evening. (B)

day 7 cefalu. Now we make our way westwards once more, but in leisurely fashion as we meander along the pretty northern coastline, stopping off as the mood takes us. Rather than heading straight back to the capital, we will wind down a little in true Back-Roads fashion. This afternoon you are free to relax in whatever way you wish in the delightful town of Cefalu, a popular resort, but one which pleasingly retains its links with the past. You can admire its picturesque harbour, alleyways and medieval buildings and its magnificent cathedral, or why not enjoy the beautiful beach lapped by crystal-clear water. Tonight we will gather together for our final dinner, as our Sicilian adventure draws to a close. (B/D)

day 8 palermo. After a leisurely breakfast we make our way back to Palermo, where we say goodbye to our travelling companions. If you are not returning home directly, you might want to stay a while in Palermo to soak in the fantastic atmosphere, or perhaps you are planning to spend some time on mainland Italy. Whatever the case, you will have lasting memories of your trip to Sicily, which will remain with you for many years to come. (B)

day 1 palermo. Our tour starts today in the vibrant city of Palermo, with its fabulous and eclectic mix of styles and flavours from every era. Arrive at your leisure and settle in before meeting up this evening with your travelling companions for your first Sicilian dinner. We have plenty of time to explore this fascinating city tomorrow, so relax this evening and enjoy the unique atmosphere. (D)

day 2 palermo. Palermo is one of the most conquered cities in the world – and all those influences are evident in the local architecture, culture, food and general character of the place, making it one of the most intriguing of cities to visit. Phoenician, Greek, Carthaginian, Roman, Gothic, Arab – all these influences are there and more. The streets of old Palermo are an intriguing and secretive maze, while the churches, castles and palaces are a mix of a whole range of classical, medieval and baroque styles. The only way to understand Palermo is to experience it yourself, which you do today with your local guide. This afternoon enjoy some time out to do a little shopping, or just to relax and take in the sights and sounds of this very special city. (B)

day 3 agrigenTo. Today we leave the capital of Sicily behind to explore the many and varied delights of the island. As we depart the city, we visit the wonderful cathedral of Monreale (Royal Mountain), just outside Palermo on the slopes of Mount Caputo. Famed for its glorious golden mosaics, this is a stunning start to our day. Then we head to the western coast and the pretty town of Marsala, where we get the chance to sample its distinctive and eponymous wine. In the seafaring days of the 18th century rum was the standard drink of sailors – however when it was substituted with local Sicilian wine, the only way to ensure the wine lasted longer was to fortify it with brandy – hence marsala wine was born. Used much these days in cooking, it is a tasty drink not dissimilar to port or madeira – try it and see! Following the Sicilian coastline, we have time to visit the fascinating Greek ruins of ancient Selinunte, set high on a promontory above the sparkling Mediterranean. This once-important city, founded in 628BC, enjoyed centuries of prosperity before being reduced to rubble by the Carthaginians during the First Punic War. The city was later abandoned, but its Doric temples still offer us a glimpse of its former grandeur, as they stand out in relief against the blue sky. And finally we reach Agrigento, where we spend the night. (B/D)

day 1 coTswolds. Relax as we travel through beautiful English countryside to the most famous university city in the world, Oxford. We enjoy a gentle walk among the golden-stone buildings and ‘dreaming spires’ to Henry VIII’s Christ Church, Oxford’s grandest college, whose former students include Lewis Carroll, Albert Einstein and John Locke. For most of the winter (except around Christmas) the students are ‘up’ at Oxford, making it an enjoyable time to experience the city. After our stroll through the college there will be time for personal exploration in this engaging city. You might want to visit the iconic Morse Bar at the Randolph Hotel, where Morse and Lewis pondered over many a complex case. Alternatively, Oxford has many fine museums and famous sites well worth visiting, including the Bodleian Library (where scenes from Harry Potter were filmed). After lunch we travel from Oxford to Churchill’s family home, the stunning Blenheim Palace, which is decorated with lavish festive decorations over the Christmas period. During those months when Blenheim is closed (12th Dec – 20th Feb), we remain in Oxford and visit the well preserved Oxford Castle where you may view the old prison, tower and crypt. We then traverse the timeless hills of the Cotswolds, stopping at some of the exquisite village gems. If we are lucky, it might

be possible to see snow! Our night stop is close-by in a cosy Cotswold village where we will enjoy a delicious traditional evening meal. (D)

day 2 coTswolds. This morning is a feast for literary enthusiasts as we visit Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon to discover Ye Olde England of the Bard’s birth and final resting place, Holy Trinity Church. Enjoy the benefit of fewer crowds of this most popular tourist town in England outside London. The relative peace will be especially apparent in Shakespeare’s birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s cottage. Once we have explored this historic town we meander through quiet country lanes to more honey-coloured Cotswold villages and towns, littered with atmospheric churches and traditional country inns. (B/D)

day 3 BaTh. This morning we visit first the picture-perfect village of Lacock. Both the timeless village and its abbey have been used in countless television and movie productions including Pride and Prejudice, The

Other Boleyn Girl and Harry Potter. And then we reach the splendid Georgian city of Bath. Listed as a World Heritage Site, Bath is truly one of Europe’s most attractive cities, boasting the highest concentration of listed buildings anywhere in the British Isles. Spend the morning exploring this city where you can learn more about Roman life at the restored

Roman Baths, visit the towering 15th century Abbey and Georgian Royal Crescent. Literary enthusiasts may visit the Jane Austen Centre which offers a snapshot of life during Regency times and explores how living in this magnificent city affected her life and writing. There is then free time to enjoy the winter festivities of the fabulously atmospheric Christmas Markets which adorn the streets of Bath (end Nov – Dec). The 123 traditional wooden chalets offer unique, handmade and unusual gifts, decorations and delicious treats. The city also boasts an abundance of interesting shops and boutiques as well as dozens of traditional pubs and inns offering local ales and ‘winter warmers.’ (B/D)

day 4 sTonehenge/windsor casTle. We say farewell to Bath and look forward to yet more spectacular sights as we travel across Salisbury Plain to the great mystical construction of Stonehenge, its stark setting accentuated by the winter light. Then onwards to the glorious city of Salisbury to admire the second tallest spire in Europe and the original Magna Carta housed in the cathedral. Our final destination is a regal exploration of discovery to the world’s largest occupied and oldest garrisoned fortress, Windsor Castle – favourite home of the Queen. As well as St George’s Chapel the burial

place of royals such as Henry VIII and the late Queen Mother, we see the jaw-dropping State Apartments, used for official state functions to this day. During the winter months an additional five rooms, known as the Semi-State Rooms, are also open to the public. At the conclusion of a marvellous day we return to London. (B)

OXFORd, BatH StRatFORd & WINdSOREngland is a country of four distinct seasons; the cooler winter months are a time when you can visit iconic sites and historic towns and cities like a local, without the summer crowds. Join Back-Roads on a magical journey as we meander through the rolling countryside where the views seem more expansive as we peek through leafless trees and hedges. The narrow country lanes that comb the landscape are quieter and winter light adds a sharp, frostier aspect on crisp and clear days. Whatever the weather (and we hope you will see some snow in the colder months) the winter is a cosier, more nostalgic season – the open fires of the rural inns and pubs will warm you after a day’s exploration. During the festive season England’s dazzling Christmas markets and sparkling lights illuminate the bustling streets and the shops will make you appreciate this jubilant time of year.

day 1 perThshire. We depart the wonderful city of Edinburgh as we get set for a remarkable tour to discover more of Scotland’s heritage. Our guide takes us through quaint routes in the locality as we travel towards ancient Stirling. Its castle dominates the city and remains a symbol of Scottish national pride and independence. Nearby the Wallace Memorial stands as a 19th century memorial to William Wallace. This afternoon we take the country trails through some of Scotland’s famed countryside as we explore its local villages and towns. Amble through the rolling countryside of Perthshire towards the quaint town of Crieff, home of Scotland’s oldest whisky distillery and where Scotland’s well known Famous Grouse is produced. We partake in a bit of “nosing and tasting,” as we enjoy a tasting tour. We arrive at our accommodation and our home for the next two nights. (D)

day 2 perThshire. After our Scottish breakfast we take a journey to the Kingdom of Fife, known as the ancestral home of monarchs and the spiritual home of golf. We travel past Scotland’s largest lowland loch, Loch Leven, where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned. We visit some local gems including the medieval towns of Falkland (boasting no fewer than 28 listed buildings) and Cupar as we travel towards our highlight for many,

the Old Course at St Andrews. A pilgrimage for golf lovers, amateurs to professionals alike, we drive along past the course and glimpse the famous Clubhouse and those sites where history has been made. Close by, the British Golf Museum traces the story of the game both in Britain and abroad. There is an opportunity to explore the city and visit its old University, following its cobbled streets to its ruined cathedral, adjacent church and castle. We wind our way along Fife’s Tay coast to the cultural city of Perth before returning to our accommodation. (B/D)

day 3 edinBurgh. Travelling through more of the region’s untouched wilderness, we journey into ‘Highland Perthshire’ and to the awe-inspiring rugged wilderness, made all the more dramatic in the winter months. This region is famed for its lochs, rivers, glens and high hills forming its majestic highland landscape. Today’s itinerary is flexible as we explore the best of the region (as road access permits) as we travel through the heart of Scotland. We include a visit to the town of Aberfeldy where Robert Burns penned one of his famous poems. Admire the views at ‘Queen’s View,’ one of the most photographed beauty spots in Scotland, and where Robert the Bruce’s Queen Isabella and then later Queen Victoria once stood. There

are two small traditional distilleries located here; Blair Athol Distillery and Edradour Distillery and we enjoy a dram and short tour in one of them. Draped over the Lothian landscape, take a moment to marvel at the illuminated city of Edinburgh as we arrive under dusk. We return to the illuminated city of Edinburgh which stands out from within the dramatic Lothian landscape. Enjoy the festive Germanic Christmas Markets or one of the many splendid restaurants this evening. (B)

day 4 edinBurgh. No visit to Scotland would be complete without a thorough discovery of this acclaimed World Heritage Site. We begin our day with a scenic tour passing those well known highlights, including the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle and the award winning Scottish Parliament building. It is a small city with a long tale and has been referred to as the ‘Athens in the North’ boasting Roman, Renaissance and Georgian influences in its architecture. We continue our visit Rosslyn Chapel, recently made famous by Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code. Built in 1446 by the St Clair family, the chapel has stood the test of time as an outstanding display of craftsmanship. It has inspired both Burns and Wordsworth. We return to Edinburgh so you have ample opportunity to explore before we end our tour tonight. (B)

Q

Back-Roads Touring Co. offers a unique touring concept. Here are a few most commonly asked questions to help you decide if our style of travel will suit you. Of course if you have further questions, your travel agent will be only too happy to assist.

whaT is The Typical age of a Back-roads clienT?

There tends to be a fairly wide range of ages, but broadly our clients are in the 40–65 age group.

is iT necessary To have a good level of moBiliTy?

Yes, you need to be fit enough to participate fully. Please bear in mind that you will have to negotiate getting on and off the vehicle on a regular basis, walking to attractions, managing stairs in the hotels and showers over the bath. We frequently use more traditional-style hotels and many will not have lifts, porter facilities or ground-floor rooms. If you are in doubt as to whether our tours are suitable for you, please check with us. Our mainland-Europe tours in particular demand an excellent level of mobility, given that the cobbled streets and terrain can often be demanding.

i have some healTh proBlems, and wanT To know if This will Be a proBlem?

If your health problem is minor and you can self-manage it without additional care or special facilities, then we should be able to accept

you. Again, it is best to check. Do remember that our tour guides are just that, and they cannot be expected to act in a caring capacity at the expense of the other group members.

are you aBle To caTer for my dieTary resTricTions?

We will do our best to satisfy your dietary needs, but you must ensure that any restrictions are made clear to us at the time of booking so we can pass the information on to our hotels. Some of the properties we use are small, and cannot produce alternative meals without advance warning. In Europe properties are perhaps less inclined to make special efforts in this area, so please be understanding if we are not as familiar with your particular dietary needs in comparison to home.

whaT meals are included?

Delicious breakfasts are included daily – English, Welsh, Scottish or Irish breakfasts in the UK and Ireland and European breakfast in mainland Europe. We also include some dinners, either in the hotel or sometimes in a local restaurant. We ensure that you have some free evenings to enjoy the local restaurants. One thing to remember, dinner times in Europe are likely to be later than you might be used to, 7.30 at the earliest and often later in France, Italy and Spain. In Europe dinner is a leisurely and enjoyable experience!

include a selection of entrances in the price. Those inclusions are clear from the brochure and our website. Any other entrance fees are at your own expense according to your choice.

how much luggage can we Bring?

The maximum we can carry is one standard-size suitcase and one small carry-on bag per person. Our coaches only have limited baggage space in the boot so if you have more luggage, please make arrangements to store it while you are out on tour as we will not to able to carry this on the coach.

are Back-roads Tours suiTaBle for children?

Our tours are designed principally for adults, but we will consider accepting children aged 12 or over on request. Please note that triple and family rooms are not always available.

can you descriBe a Typical day ouT on Tour?

Each day is different, on some days there will be longer drives, however, we take our time without rushing from place to place and we make stops on the way to break up the drive. On other days you might find a day at leisure for personal exploration. We might typically leave at 9am and arrive back at our hotel at 5pm – so no early morning starts! Your enjoyment is our priority so we have tried to offer a balance within the tour so you have time for rest and relaxation.

how flexiBle are Back-roads iTineraries?

There are certain visits included in our itineraries which are fixed and included in the price. However outside these there is some flexibility to adapt the itinerary according to such things as the weather, special events and group wishes. Of course all group members must be in agreement if any radical change to the itinerary is to be made, but one of the beauties of small-group touring is that we are not on a strict timetable like the big bus tours and can be much more relaxed and flexible in our approach. If you have a specific request which is not on the itinerary, we will do our best to accommodate it, but this will depend on the agreement of your fellow-travellers and the judgement of the guide as to whether the request is feasible and we cannot guarantee to be able to accommodate it.

are Back-roads Tours always guaranTeed To run?

We will run our tours with a minimum of four people, at which point we will guarantee it. Guaranteed tours are identified on our website, and your travel agent will be able to advise you of the ongoing status. If we are forced to cancel a tour, you will be advised at least 6 weeks in advance.

can you explain whaT a driver/guide companion is?

Our well-educated and knowledgeable guides, from all

am i expecTed To leave graTuiTies?

It is common in the UK & Europe to leave a small gratuity in restaurants and cafes if you have received good service (typically 10% on top of the bill). It would also be usual to give your tour guide a tip at the end of the tour if he/she has done a good job. The amount is entirely at your discretion, and is not mandatory, but it is always much appreciated.

whaT grade of hoTel does Back-roads use?

We generally use 3 star / 4 star standard accommodation ranging from guest houses, country inns, town centre hotels and the occasional castle! But rather than going by the official grading (which is based solely on the facilities available rather than how good it is), we base our choices on quality. So on occasions we might use what is officially a 2-star hotel, but one which we know to be much better than a lot of 4-stars! In all properties the rooms have ensuite bathrooms.

whaT kind of room should i Book?

A very important point to note when you are booking is that we need to know whether you want a twin room (two single-sized beds in a room) or a double room (one standard-sized bed for two people). You need to tell us at the time of booking what your choice is as the room types are not interchangeable.

i am a single Traveller. is iT possiBle To share a room? why musT i pay a single supplemenT?

We do not “match up” single travellers, because we find that in a small group scenario this does not work. And it is very unlikely that another single traveller on the same tour will have a similar request. All hotels will charge extra for a single room, even though this might be smaller than a double room, though in some hotels the single traveller will have a double room for their own use.

whaT else should i know aBouT The hoTels?

The main thing to understand is that many of the traditional properties we use are older buildings not purpose-built to be hotels. So often the rooms are different shapes and sizes – and they are often smaller than you might be used to or than you might be expecting. For the same reason the plumbing might be “temperamental” – just look upon it as part of the European experience! Often hotels do not have lifts or air-conditioning, in many cases because they are not allowed to as they are “listed” and protected buildings with restrictions on what they can do in terms of making changes to the property.

do you include enTrance fees To aTTracTions?

Unlike many tour companies who charge everything as extras, we do

backgrounds and walks of life, have all in addition passed a stringent government test allowing them to drive our vehicles and conduct tours. The small nature of our groups means that he/she becomes your travelling companion rather than just a tour guide, which makes for a much more rewarding experience. On some tours in mainland Europe (e.g. south of France, Italy, Spain) we will often use a driver in addition to a guide as this makes for better operation of the tour in these particular areas.

do i need To Take ouT Travel insurance for my Trip?

You should always ensure you are fully insured when travelling overseas, and we require all Back-Roads participants to have suitable and adequate cover. We will ask for your insurance details at the commencement of the tour and hold them securely.

do you have a policy on smoking?

Virtually all countries in Europe have now implemented a total smoking ban in public places, and the local laws must be followed. There are very few hotels which retain any bedrooms in which you are allowed to smoke, and you must follow the local rules in place. It goes without saying that no smoking is allowed on our vehicles.

will i need a visa?

It is your responsibility to obtain any visas which might be necessary enabling

you to visit and holiday in Europe. Make sure to check with your local consular office as to any visa requirements for the countries you are visiting.

how many people will Be on my Tour?

The maximum number we carry is 16 and the minimum 4. Your guide will usually implement a daily seat rotation exercise on the vehicle so you can get to know your fellow travellers better and see from a different perspective each day.

whaT kind of vehicles do you use?

We own a fleet of comfortable 16-seater Mercedes Sprinter mini-coaches with high-backed seats, fitted seat belts, PA system and air-conditioning. On tours with fewer passengers we might use 7-seater Mercedes Vitos or similar as an alternative.

whaT are The BenefiTs of Travelling in a small group?

Unlike a large coach company we can offer a truly personal experience as we can explore the local region in greater depth. You will meet like-minded friends and enjoy the convenience of your own personal driver/guide, who will impart their local knowledge and ensure you visit sites that the mainstream tourist typically misses out on.

“Now that our trip is complete I wanted to write you to thank you for all of your efforts in working our arrangements, and also Mark for all his help in the early stages of inquiries and planning. In a word, the trip was magnificent – it exceeded all of our expectations in every regard!

Our guide Tony immediately became a member of our family and took care of every aspect of our tour flawlessly. His knowledge of local culture and history is quite extensive and added another dimension to our travels which really enriched our experience – it was like having a local expert in attendance. He went above and beyond the call of duty and handled all of our requests perfectly – from our narrow boat canal ride, to arranging a visit in a wonderful church to hear a Welsh male voice choir – all exceeded our expectations! The accommodation that you picked, as well as the dining arrangements were wonderful. Each was a unique and interesting experience. The small coach was also perfect for us – plenty of room, yet it was nimble enough to visit places inaccessible to the larger coaches. We hope to book another tour with Back-Roads in the future!”

We will only have to pay this maximum amount if everything has gone wrong and you have received no benefit from your holiday. 20. Subject to clause 17 above, if any failure in your holiday arrangements or damage arising from the non-performance or improper performance of the services involved in your travel package or tour relates to, or if you or any member of your party is killed, injured or becomes ill during or as a result of, carriage by aircraft, ship, train or coach forming part of the holiday arrangements booked before departure in your trip with us, our liability to pay compensation and/or the amount of compensation we will pay is limited in accordance with the liability of the carrier under any international convention which governs such services. International Conventions which may apply include, but are not limited to, the following: in respect of carriage by sea, the Athens Convention 1974; in respect of rail carriage, the Berne Convention 1961; and, in respect of carriage by road, the Geneva Convention 1973. The terms of these conventions are incorporated into and form part of your contract with us You should also be aware that these conventions may limit or remove the carrier’s liability to you and the amount which the carrier has to pay to you in the event of damage, death or personal injury. You should also know that the carrier will rely upon its ‘conditions of carriage’ which may limit or remove the carrier’s liability to you and limit compensation under international conventions. 21. If we make any payment to you or any member of your party for death, personal injury or illness, you must give us or our insurers the rights you may have to take action against the person or organisation responsible for causing the death, personal injury or illness and you must co-operate fully with us in seeking recovery of any payment we may make to you.22. Where, as a result of circumstances beyond our control, we are obliged to change or end your holiday after departure, but before the end of your holiday, we will not pay compensation or reimburse you for expenses incurred. You should have adequate travel insurance for your holiday and claim via your insurance company for any loss or out-of-pocket expenses you incur as

a result of the change or premature end to your holiday. In the event that any claim is made directly with us and notwithstanding these terms and conditions we are held to be responsible for that claim, our liability to pay compensation and/or the amount of compensation will be limited in accordance with the conventions referred to in clause 20 above. 23. If however after departure, a significant portion of the services you have contracted for is not provided or we become aware that we will be unable to procure a significant proportion of the services to be provided:(a) we will make suitable alternative arrangements, at no extra cost to you, for the continuation of the package and will, where appropriate, compensate you for the difference between the services to be supplied under our contract with you and those supplied; and(b) if it is not possible to make the arrangements referred to in clause 23(a) above, or these arrangements are not accepted by you for good reasons, we will, where appropriate, provide you with equivalent transport back to the place of departure or to another place to which you have agreed and will, where appropriate, compensate you.24. Every effort will be made to operate the tours in this brochure or on our website, but there may be a necessity to vary the itinerary, or delays may occur for a variety of reasons beyond our control. In the instance that we are unable to visit a site included in the list of entrances due to seasonal opening hours, we will offer a reasonable alternative in fitting with the itinerary. You will therefore need to undertake the tour of your choice with a flexible attitude. 25. All Our tours are conducted in English.26. No refund can be made for services not used once the tour has begun, howsoever this eventuality may be occasioned, including where you decide to leave the tour early. The final decision on the itinerary and the content of the tour will be taken by the Back-Roads Guide, as appointed by us, taking into account the interests of the group as a whole.

exclusion of liability27. Force Majeure 27.1 We do not accept liability for any loss, damage or expense resulting from a force majeure event. Force majeure means unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our reasonable control or the control of our suppliers, the consequences of which neither us nor our suppliers could avoid even with all due care, including, but not limited to, war or terrorist activities, threatened or actual, civil unrest, riot, industrial action, threatened or actual, adverse weather conditions, fire, flood, drought, natural or nuclear disaster, closures, unforeseen alterations to public transport schedules, changes imposed by rescheduling of aircraft or boats, unavoidable technical problems with transport, machinery or equipment, power failure, epidemic or outbreaks of illness or any other event outside our control the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all due care had been exercised, which either delays or extends the tour, compels a change in the holiday arrangements or its cancellation. 27.2 We will not accept responsibility for any client who contravenes any law or regulation of any of the countries visited while on the tour.28. health and medical conditions 28.1 If you, or any member of your party have a medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday you must tell us at time of booking so we are able to advise as to the suitability of your chosen arrangements. We may ask You to complete a medical assessment form to assist us. If we reasonably feel we are unable to properly accommodate the particular needs of the person concerned, we reserve the right to decline the booking or ask for the person to be accompanied by a person who is able to provide full assistance to them throughout their tour. 28.2 All participants on a Back-Roads tour must be in good health as walking is a fundamental part of these tours. Our tours are not suitable for anyone with physical or mental disabilities, or restriction of movement. 28.3 You should also be aware that your fellow travellers may be of a wide age range and from various nationalities.

your liability to us29. You must comply with all Government laws, regulations, local customs and foreign exchange regulations of each of the countries visited whilst on tour. Should we detect any contravention of any relevant law, regulation or custom, you may be asked to leave the tour without a refund of the tour fees you have paid.30. No passenger will be permitted to embark or continue on the trip while their mental or physical condition is, in the reasonable opinion of any representative of Back-Roads Touring, or any Tour Guide, hotel manager, or other person in authority, such as to render him or her incapable of caring for himself or herself, or whereby their behaviour is causing danger to themselves or to other passengers, damage to property, or persistently affecting the enjoyment of others. We reserve the right to terminate your holiday immediately in such a situation. 31. We will not be responsible for expenses resulting in such persons being precluded from completing the tour for any reason, nor will we be able to refund them any part of their trip cost. 32. In all cases we will notify you of the situation and the reasons why we have taken any action against or towards you. We will have no obligation to arrange for your return to the point of departure.

Travel documents33. Please ensure you carefully read your confirmation invoice, tickets and all other documents we send to you as soon as you receive them, and contact your travel agent, or us if any information appears to be incorrect. We regret that we cannot accept any liability if we are not notified of any inaccuracy in any document within 14 days of us sending them to you or your travel agent. While we will do our best to rectify any changes made outside this time, it is your responsibility to meet any additional costs which may be involved, except in the case of an error made solely by Us and where there is good reason for you not contacting us within the specified time.

34. Each passenger is responsible for ensuring that all necessary travel documents (eg. passports, visas, vaccination certificates etc.) are valid and effective. We strongly recommend that you verify current information with your travel agent. We will not be liable to make any refund or pay compensation if you or any member of your party is unable to proceed with the holiday as planned because of incorrect or missing personal documents.

insurance35. It is a condition of booking that you and all members of your party take out comprehensive travel insurance before you travel on your Back-Roads tour and that it is adequate for your needs. Your insurance must include cover for cancellation, medical and repatriation expenses, personal injury, death, cover for loss of baggage, money and valuables, personal liability, delay, curtailment, missed departure and legal expenses. If you suffer from a disability or medical condition you should disclose this to insurers. Insurance cover offered by credit card companies or reciprocal medical cover agreements are often not sufficiently comprehensive to cover these things. Your travel insurance should be taken out at time of booking. 36. You also agree to indemnify us against all third-party actions taken against us in respect of actions, accidents or damages caused by or to you arising from your participation in the holiday.37. In the event of you making a claim against us for services rendered on your trip, you agree to sign over to us, any rights to take action against the supplier or any other person or party that you have a complaint or legal right against and to co-operate fully with us should we or our Insurers wish to enforce those rights which have been assigned to us.38. In the event of you not making a claim under your insurance policy by the date falling 5 days before the maximum length of time permitted by your policy for making claims, you shall assign, by letter sent by special delivery post to Us not less than 5 days prior to the said specified maximum time, the benefit of the insurance policy to us and give immediate notice of such an assignment to the Insurer.

complaints39. In the unlikely event of any dissatisfaction with the accommodation or any other services provided by us, you must report it immediately to your Back-Roads Guide so that prompt efforts can be taken to find appropriate solutions to the problem. It is unreasonable to take no action whilst on holiday, but then write a letter of complaint upon return. Failure to notify the Guide of any problem immediately or at the earliest opportunity in writing or any other appropriate form, may result in your ability to claim compensation from us being extinguished or at least reduced. 40. Any complaint made to us after the holiday has finished should be made in writing within 28 days of holiday completion. In the event you do not notify us in writing within 28 days, this may affect the company’s ability to investigate your complaint and may impact on the way that your complaint is dealt with. In consequence, this may affect your rights under this contract.

data protection41. Information about you and members of your party, including your names, contact details and any special needs, disabilities or dietary requirements, is collected by us when you request information or make a booking with us. You are responsible for ensuring that other members of your party are aware of our booking terms and conditions and this privacy policy, and that they consent to you acting on their behalf in your dealings with us. We have measures in place to protect the personal booking information held by us. However, in order to make your booking and ensure that your travel arrangements run smoothly, we need to use the information you provide to us and pass it on to relevant suppliers. The information may also be provided to public authorities such as customs or immigration for security and anti-terrorism purposes, if required by them, or as required by law. We will only pass your information on to persons responsible for your travel arrangements. 42. This applies to any sensitive information that you give to us such as details of any disabilities, dietary requirements or religious beliefs. If we cannot pass this information on to the relevant suppliers, whether in the EU or not, we will be unable to provide your booking and we cannot accept your booking. In making this booking, you consent to this information being passed on to the relevant persons. You have the right to ask us in writing for a data subject access request to obtain a copy of the information which we hold about you. You will be charged a fee for this. Any requests should be addressed to the Company Secretary, Back-Roads Touring Co Limited, Level 3, 345 Ann Street, Brisbane, 4000 Australia.

smoking43. We operate a non-smoking policy on our vehicles, although we make frequent stops for breaks.

luggage44. There are strict weight limits in Europe and the U.K. for vehicles when fully loaded, therefore we have limited luggage capacity. Therefore you are only entitled to one piece of main luggage of a standard size and not weighing more than 20kg. In addition you may bring a daypack. If you are carrying more luggage than this allowance we are within our rights to refuse to carry additional bags and You will be responsible for making alternative storage arrangements.

general45. No servant or representative of Back-Roads Touring has any right to alter, vary or waive any of these terms and conditions, nor do they have the right to undertake any liability whatsoever on behalf of Back-Roads Touring unless such alteration, variation, waiver or undertaking is in writing and signed by a duly authorised representative on behalf of Us.46. All contracts with Back-Roads Touring are governed by Australian law and are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Australian Courts. 47. You understand that future Back-Roads Touring advertising or publicity material may include statements made by passengers, or their photographs, and you consent to such use of your comments and/or photographic / video likeness.
