CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 2, Week 3, 4th May 2017
Camperdown
Camperdown College students, staff and families again participated proudly in the town ANZAC march and service. Flag bearers Andrew Anderson and Alanah Blake ably led the various community participants in the march and our Junior and Senior School Captains Evie Clementson, Bailey McGillivray, Soraya Clark and Nicholas Jones led our school group and laid wreaths on behalf of their peers.
Clockwise from top: Alanah Blake; School Captains Evie Clementson, Soraya Clark; Nicholas Jones and
Bailey McGillivray; Junior Campus students watching the service; Andrew Anderson.
Soraya also joined the official party to give a reading during the service. It was terrific to see so many of our Camperdown College students from Prep through to Year 12 participate in this important day of remembrance, paying tribute and giving thanks to the service men and women of Australia and New Zealand.
Cherie Kilpatrick Principal
Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,
aspiration and persistence to achieve high levels of learning for all students.
From the Principal’s Desk…
The Camperdown College 2016 Annual
Report was presented and endorsed at
last Wednesday’s School Council
meeting. It is a compliance requirement
that schools report annually on student
achievement, engagement and
wellbeing as well as the school’s
financial performance and position.
Copies of the Annual Report can be obtained through the
College website and either campus office.
Teachers are once again completing progress reports on
Compass for all students from Prep to Year 12. Every six
weeks, teachers allocate a rating on a 1-4 scale for four
learning attributes that underpin student achievement. The
progress report is presented on Compass in the form of
coloured graphs as well as numbers, so that students and
parents can keep track of improvements and identify areas
for attention in the next six week period. We have included
an explanation of the Junior and Senior Campus 1-4
learning attribute ratings in this week’s newsletter. You can
also find these learning attributes tables within Compass
(open in browser) by selecting the pencil icon and clicking
on the School Resources button. Please note that a paper
copy of your child’s progress report can be supplied
through the relevant campus office if you are unable to
access Compass at home.
I am very appreciative of the efforts made by our students
and families to ensure school attendance is an absolute
priority. Any support you are able to give neighbours and
other College families to assist with transport or other
matters that affect school attendance is greatly appreciated.
Every child attending school on time, every day, ready for
learning leads to much better educational and wellbeing
outcomes for individuals, and our whole community
benefits in the long run.
We have made great gains with our overall school
attendance data and our data compares very favourably
with other schools. There is, however, still work to be
done to achieve greater consistency. We will continue to
work towards reducing the percentage of students with 20
or more absences per year to zero, to close the
achievement gap and ensure that every student has the best
chance of a happy, healthy and successful future.
There is a process you can follow if you are concerned
about a young person not attending school and wish to
refer the matter to the Department of Education for
investigation. Any member of the community can make a
referral to a School Attendance Officer about a child of
compulsory school age who appears not to be enrolled,
and copies of the community referral form are available at
either campus office.

ANZAC Parade:
Our campus was very well represented at the ANZAC parade last week. SRC members Andrew Anderson and
Alanah Blake led the parade carrying the Australian flag. School Captain Soraya Clark presented a reading and with
fellow Captain Nicholas Jones laid a wreath on behalf of the Senior Campus.
Camps: Both Year 9/10 students have had the pleasure of being on camp from Wednesday through until tomorrow. Year 10
students have travelled to Melbourne to participate in a discovery program that aims to expose students to a range of
careers/tertiary options whilst also familiarising students with the use of public transport. Year 9 students have spent their time
enjoying all that the Grampians have to offer. Students have camped in Halls Gap, prepared their own meals using trangeas and have
completed three hikes.
Federation University – Discovery Day:
Years 9 students participated in a range of activities conducted by students and staff from Federation University as part of their
careers’ program last week. The activities centred on breaking down the barriers about university education. Thanks to Mrs Maskell
for organising this excursion.
NAPLAN:
The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests for students in Year 7 and 9 will be conducted next
week. It is very important that students are in attendance on these days as performance on these tests is used to monitor student
growth and set future learning targets. The timetable for NAPLAN is:
Tuesday – Language Conventions and Writing
Wednesday – Reading
Thursday Numeracy.
Students who are unable to attend on the day of the test will participate in catch up sessions.
Student Surveys:
As was mentioned in the previous newsletter Senior Campus students have had the opportunity to complete a brief online survey on
each of their subject teachers over the past three weeks. Student feedback forms an integral part of a teacher’s professional
development. Staff will receive valuable feedback on: their practice, impact of learning activities, relationships and enable future
discussions to take place on how to improve learning outcomes.
In addition to this, students in Year 7-12 will next week complete the annual Attitudes to School Survey and for the first time this will
be completed online. The results from this survey provide us with valuable data on students’ views of their wellbeing, teaching and
learning, and school in general, to support school improvement.
Airodrome:
Year 11 and 12 VCAL students enjoyed their celebratory day at Airodrome in Geelong last week. The students spent time perfecting
their skills on the tramps, foam pit and bounce wall areas. A number of students were proud of the fact that they were able to execute
a double front flip!
National Gallery of Victoria:
Last Thursday, the Year 12 Studio Arts students attended the National Gallery of
Victoria to view the Top Arts exhibition, an exhibition that showcases some of the
best artwork from VCE students in 2016. It was a really valuable experience as they
got to view the student folios, attend a presentation and a Q & A session given by
two of the Top Arts students. As well as Top Arts, the students visited the Festival
of Photography, ACMI and visited Hozier Lane to check out the graffiti. A rich and
varied day of art! Thanks to Mrs Mann for organising this wonderful experience.
Year 7 Information Night:
Our Year 7 Information Night will be held on Wednesday 24th
May commencing at 7pm. Please share this date with any interested
families.
Progress Reports:
Progress Reports will be uploaded to Compass tomorrow. These will provide valuable information on how your child is tracking in all
subjects.
Vicki Angus, Senior Campus Assistant Principal
Cross Country:
With sunny skies prevailing upon us, our Prep – Year 6 House Cross Country was
strongly contested yesterday at the Frederick Street Sporting Complex. Congratulations
to all children who participated in this event. It was great weather for spectators and
competitors alike. It was fantastic to see the support and encouragement the students
gave to each other. Congratulations to Manifold house for taking home the winning
shield. Congratulations to all children who have made it through to the Interschool Cross
Country to be held next Friday 12th
May at Noorat. Also thanks must go to Mr Attrill for his organisation
of the event and to all parents and grandparents who came along to offer their support to the children.

Progress Reports:
Staff have now completed progress reports for students. The reports will be available for viewing on Compass from tomorrow. If you
have any questions about your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to make contact with either myself or your child’s teacher. A
reminder that Compass is the platform for communication with staff, parents and students and therefore we encourage all families
who have not yet registered for a Compass login, to contact Amy in the office.
Division Track and Field:
Last Thursday, Nikita Carter and Stella Horspole competed in the 1500m run at the division competition in Warrnambool. Both
students represented our College with great pride, finishing in the top 10 for their age group. Great effort girls!
Staffing:
We would like to welcome Narelle Rasmussen to our Junior Campus staff. Narelle has been employed as an educational support
member and will be working predominantly with the Year 3 – 6 students. Welcome Narelle!
I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome a former student, Madison Helmore. Madison is a Latrobe University, 4th
year
teacher education student, who is working in Year 3/4C over the coming weeks.
NAPLAN:
NAPLAN testing will commence next week. The dates for NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) this
year are Tuesday 9th
, Wednesday 10th
and Thursday 11th
May and will involve all of our Year 3 and 5 students.
NAPLAN is the measure through which governments, education authorities, schools, teachers and parents can determine whether or
not young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in Literacy and Numeracy. The tests provide parents and schools
with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, states and
territories with information about how educational programs are working and which areas need to be prioritised for improvement.
NAPLAN tests are one aspect of the school’s assessment and reporting process and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments
made by teachers about each student’s performance. If you have any questions about the NAPLAN tests, please visit
http://www.nap.edu.au or speak with your child’s classroom teacher.
Somers Camp:
Every two years, our College is offered a limited number of students to attend Somers Camp. This year our allocated dates are
Tuesday 10th –
Wednesday 18th
October. All students in Year 5/6 have now received a letter outlining the camp details and an
expression of interest form. If you wish your child to be considered for the camp, please return the form by Friday 12th
May.
Home Reading:
A reminder that all students at Camperdown College should be reading every night. I cannot stress how important it is for you to show
interest in your child’s reading, including the newspaper and footy records.... anything of interest to them. Reading aloud is also
important for confidence, fluency and pronunciation. To borrow a quote from well-known author Dr Seuss:
Please remember that reading at home should be with text they can read without a struggle. If it is too hard, they lose interest and
meaning. At school the teachers work with them on more challenging books and articles.

Year 9 Discovery Day Last Monday, the Year 9
students (pictured right)
travelled to Federation
University in Ballarat to
participate in a Discovery
Day.
They engaged in a workshop called focus on
your future which got them to explore their
strengths and aspects of their personality and
make links to potential careers and pathway
planning. They also completed an amazing race
around the university, exploring the various
departments and facilities.
Suzanne Maskell, Careers Coordinator
Selected students in Year 3 – 12 recently took part in this writing competition.
Camperdown College was very proud to announce that both campuses had more than ten students make it pass the initial level of judging which placed us in the
top 10% in Australia.

VCAL Airodrome Excursion On Wednesday, VCAL students (pictured left) travelled to Geelong for their
Celebration Day where they enjoyed the day at Airodrome. The students were busy
during Term 1 developing the area around our new shed, cleaning out the nursery
and doing various gardening tasks around the College. It was great to have a day
out socialising together and enjoying each other’s company. I have been extremely
impressed with the students’ level of motivation and work ethic so far this year and
look forward to continuing to achieve great outcomes.

Year 1/2B: The day my pet disappeared…
I am mad at my fish because I just found out… IT WENT TO HAWAII! OK, if you didn’t
understand a single word I just said, I’ll show you. OK, readers, we’re going on a flashback. My fish
is welding. I’m eating breakfast. Suddenly I hear a “Boom!” Oh no! I think my fish has escaped
again! Oh no! It has!
The day my pet disappeared was when my white lion went on holidays to Antarctica. Me and Abey were at my house. First me and
Abey realised that there was a note on the door. It said “I am sorry because I am going on holidays to Antarctica”. Next me and Abey
went to Antarctica. Then we went looking for my pet because I was so angry at him. After we found him we went home. Finally we
made a rule that no one will leave again.
One day I woke up and saw my monkey cage open and (it was Christmas) he had left me a present! I
remembered it was the holidays. I walked to the window and saw my monkey doing the tango down the
street! “Oh yeah, he’s got mixed up and thought we really were going on holidays!” I thought. I saw
Nancy and Noah down the street and when I was talking to them to say “Hello” I saw Kaden in his
house. We all met but then we saw Lazy (my monkey) jump on someone’s head. First I yelled at Lazy,
but he kept jumping on people’s heads, and he just wouldn’t stop!
