Let me congratulate Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, IIT Madras, for being elevated to the position of IEEE Fellow, from 01 January 2009. Hearty Congratulations! I also congratulate IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society, India Chapter, IEEE Madras Section and Affinity Groups of WIE and GOLD for organizing a special lecture on “Advances in Underwater Vehicles” by Dr. Sergey Sukonkin, Head of Dept. of Underwater Vehicles, Experimental Design Bureau of Engineering, Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia, on 13 December 2008. Dr. S. Kathiroli, Director, NIOT, felicitated the function. Prizes were awarded to the winners of the competitions conducted by WIE. Mrs. Ramalatha Marimuthu, IEEE R10 WIE Coordinator, summarized the WIE activities. A presentation followed on the WIE Sangamam Project. The Broadcast Engineering Society (India), Chennai Chapter, and IEEE Madras Section jointly celebrated the National Public Service Broadcasting Day on Saturday, 15 November, 2008 at Multi Tract Studio Auditorium, All India Radio, Chennai. Mr. Chandra Dathan, Director, Satish Dhavan Space Centre, ISRO, Sriharikota, was the Chief Guest and Dr. K. Giridhan, Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras, Chennai, was the Guest of Honour. IEEE Computer Society, Madras Chapter, IEEE Technology Management Council, Madras Chapter, IEEE Power Engineering Society, Madras Chapter, and Computer Society of India, Chennai Chapter, will exhibit a presentation on e-procurement & Material Management in Railways by Mr. B. Srinivasan, Sr. EDP Manager, Southern Railway, Chennai, on 27 December, 2008. The Nov 2008 technical meeting on “Trends in Computer Architecture” organized by the IEEE Madras Section and IEEE CS along with CSI Chennai Chapter was well attended. The time was insufficient to cover all the aspects of the topic. It was felt that a tutorial for four hours could be organized for the benefit of both student and faculty members as the topic is of great importance in the current IT scenario. We were constrained to state that we are not getting inputs from the student branches on the events being organized except a lone event - Student Professional Awareness Venture (SPAVe’ 08) held at Kongu Engineering College. WIE has been active. The event to distribute the prizes to the winners of the Robotics contest was well organized. The recently opened OES chapter is quite vibrant with two events in this month itself of which one has been covered. The other societies such as Computer, Technology Management Council, Power Engineering are also active and have organized more than one event. A report on the national convention on Knowledge, Library and Information Networking supported by IEEE CS is published in this issue. This issue features two articles - “Security Enhancement of Mobile Networks Using JINI Technology” by Ms. Selva Amal Arasi of KLNCE, a philosophical article on “The Powers of Optimism” by Mr . Prithvin Rajendran of SSNCE. We trust the items published under “Infobits & Resources”, “Social Networking” and “Project Control” are of interest to our readers. Dr. P. Suresh Chander Pal, Chair, Student Activity, IEEE Madras Section & IEEE India Council, in his article, has stressed the need to join IEEE & energise the future. Dr. S. Kathiroli, Director, NIOT, felicitated thefunction. Prizes were awarded to the winners of the competitionsconducted by WIE. Mr. Chandra Dathan, Director,Satish Dhavan Space Centre, ISRO, Sriharikota, was the Chief Guestand Dr. K. Technical Meeting on Trends in Computer Architectures

A technical meeting on thetopic “Trends in Computer

Architectures” by Prof. B.Govindarajulu, Dean (CSE & IT),Rajalakshmi Engineering College,Chennai & Authour of the books“IBM PC and Clones: HardwareT r o u b l e S h o o t i n g a n dMaintenance” & “ComputerArchitecture & Organization” was organizedjointly by the IEEE Madras Section, IEEE CS,Madras Chapter, and CSI Chennai Chapter on15th Nov. 2008.

Dr. S. Salivahanan, Chairman, IEEEMadras Section welcomed the gathering.Mr. P. Kumar, Treasurer of Computer Societyof India, Madras Chapter and Prof., IT Dept,RCE introduced the speaker.

The speaker, Prof. B. Govindarajulu,started his presentation with terms related tocomputer architecture, then briefed on the old &modern processors, computer classifications &

generations. The concepts& techniques & moderncomputer architecture werethen introduced. He explainedhow a programmer viewsthe architecture and thed e p e n d e n c y o f t h earchitec ture by o therengineering fields. He also

outlined the five major dimensions in the goal forcomputer architecture, namely - cost, performance,maintenance, capacity & convenience of usage.

Prof. B. Govindarajulu, then explainedabout the multiprocessor and gave examples ofvarious types of processors such as scalar, superscalar, vector, pipelined, array processors, CISC& RISC. Instruction cycles & memoryorganization including cache & virtual memorywere discussed.

In his talk, the pipelining concepts weredetailed out with examples. The CISC issuesand the RISC solutions were also highlighted.

The architectures of popular Pentium & PentiumPro processors were discussed along with thetechniques of software pipelining & parallelism.

The evolution of usage – uniprogramming,multiprocessing, parallel processing, multi-tasking & computer networking principles weretouched upon. Concepts of threading &multithreading, fine & course grainedmultithreading, simultaneous multithreadingwere briefly discussed by Prof. B. Govindarajulu.

He also spoke on the features of tightlycoupled & loosely coupled multiprocessorsystems and discussed on clustering for loadbalancing & fault tolerance, disk mirroring &duplexing principles, server duplication &clustering concepts.

After the talk, Mr. H.R. Mohan,Chairman, IEEE Computer Society, MadrasChapter presented a memento to the speakerProf. Govindarajulu. Mr.Kumar, CSI ChennaiChapter proposed the vote of thanks.

The student membership did not declinein our Section despite the annual membershipfee of $25, which is considered high in India.This is a reflection of the value provided byIEEE membership!

Madras IEEE Women in Engineering: Prize Distribution for ProjectContest on “Society Useful Robots”

M adras IEEE Women in EngineeringAffinity Group organized the prize

Distribution function for the Student ProjectContest on “Society Useful Robots” on 13th Dec2008 at Hotel Pamgrove, Chennai. It was supportedby IEEE Madras Section, Oceanic EngineeringSociety, India Chapter and IEEE MADRASGOLD. The Competition call was made in earlyJuly for the IEEE student members of TamilNadu and 29 papers were received for thecontest from 22 different colleges across thestate. The scrutinizing committee had a toughtime filtering out the papers since the paperswere of good standard and dealt with innovativeideas. Finally after two levels of filtering, a panelof judges evaluated the entries on the basis ofconcept, creativity, technical content andpresentation. The followingthree papers wereselected and announced as prize winners.

1. “A Rescue Robot Control Architectureensuring Safe Semi-AutonomousOperation” by S. Rekhah, A. Akalya, ErodeSengunthar Engineering College, Erode.

2. “S.O.S - Sense of sight – The audible optics”by Mr. N. S. Bharath Kumar and Ms. S.Akshaya, Meenakshi SundararajanEngineering College, Chennai.

3. “Safe Drive” by M. Ramya and V. Nagavigneshof Coimbatore Institute of Engineeringand Technology, Coimbatore.

The lunch was a buffet which was reallyan ice breaking session for the members fromdifferent organizations. The registration startedat 1.00 p.m. and about 80 student members andmembers registered. There was a variety ofparticipation – students of Easwari EngineeringCollege, St. Joseph Engineering College,St. Xavier’s Catholic College of Engineering,Coimbatore Institute of Engineering andTechnology, Meenakshi SundararajanEngineering College, Erode SenguntharEngineering College, Sri MuthukumaranInstitute of Technology, members from

organizations like National Institute of OceanTechnology, Signals and Systems Pvt. Ltd, andother academic organizations across the state.

The function started with invocation byS. Preethi of St. Joseph College of EngineeringMrs. D. Vydeki, Treasurer, Madras IEEE WIEwelcomed the gathering. Following her,Mrs. Ramalatha Marimuthu, Asia Pacific WIECoordinator gave a brief account of Madras WIEactivities. She elaborated on the Student ProjectContest, how the topic was chosen and how ithas helped improved the technical as well associal awareness for the Engineering studentsin Tamil Nadu. Dr. S. Kathiroli, Director,National Institute of Ocean Technologyfelicitated the function. The Chief GuestDr. Sergey Sukonkin, Department of underwaterVehicles, Russian Academy of Sciences, Russiawas introduced by Dr. Atmanand, Chair, IEEEOceanic Engineering Society, India Chapter.

The Chief Guest Dr. Sergey Sukonkin,gave an inspiring talk on “Advances inUnderwater Vehicles”. With his vast technicalknowledge and experience, he captivated themembers through videos and pictures. Heexplained about the tsunami tracking systemand earthquake tracking system, the evolutionof underwater vehicles for the shallow seas andthe deepest trenches and shared his experiencesin their design and development.

The Chief Guest presented the prizesand certificates to the first three prize winners.

Dr. Suresh Chander Pal, Student Activity Chair,and Dr. Michael N. Kumar, ExecutiveCommittee Member, IEEE Madras Sectiondistributed the certificates to the participants.

The prize winners gave brief presentationson their project. A presentation on SangamamProject was followed. Sangamam is a projectlaunched by Madras IEEE WIE for involvingthe student community in technology transferto rural areas. This has been successfully going onin different districts of Tamil Nadu through differentstudent branches. St. Xavier’s Catholic Collegeof Engineering, Chunkankadai, KanyakumariDistrict had come over to give a presentationon the programmes that are to be organizedunder the Sangamam Project. Career GuidancePrograms for the rural school children, rural youthdevelopment program and a WIE awarenessprogram are planned under this project.

Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. T.Thiagarajan, Secretary, IEEE Madras Sectionand the function ended with national anthem.

Faculty DevelopmentProgrammes

Karunya University, Coimbatorewill be organizing three/four FacultyDevelopment Programmes during theperiod Jan-Jun 2009.

Some of the topics include:Computational Fluid Dynamics; IntelligentSoftware Agents for KnowledgeEngineering; FPGA Based System Designusing EDA Tools; Research issues ininformation Security.

Please look forward to detailedannouncements shortly.

NACLIN 2008: National Convention on Knowledge, Library andInformation Networking

The Eleventh National Convention onKnowledge, Library and Information

Networking NACLIN 2008 was organizedby DELNET-Developing Library Networkand Karunya University, Coimbatore fromNovember 4-7, 2008 on the theme “DigitalFutures: strategies for developing world classlibraries”.

The convention, NACLIN 2008, wassupported by IEEE Computer Society,Madras Chapter along with Div II onSoftware of Computer Society of India (CSI),Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation,Ministry of Culture, Govt of India; Ministryof Information Technology and DRDOMinistry of Defence. It was sponsored byPressmart as Platinum sponsor and EmeraldGroup Publishing Ltd as Silver Sponsor.

The inaugural function started with awelcome address by Dr B C Pillai, DeanResearch, Karunya University and wasfollowed by introductory remarks by Dr H KKaul, Director, DELNET who emphasizedupon the need to deliver knowledge at the grass-root level in the country. Dr Paul P Appasamy,Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Karunya Universitythen released the pre-conference proceedingsof NACLIN 2008 containing 23 papers and theNACLIN 2008 Souvenir and delivered theinaugural address. According to Dr Appasamy,the information overload is of major concern tothe researchers and scholars. He said that thenetworking of libraries and information sharinghas become the order of the day. The copyrightand IPR issues are the major issues andplagiarism and piracy is of serious concern.Talking about the future of libraries, he saidthat the infrastructure for digital libraries shouldbe developed and there is a need for devisingstrategies for developing world class libraries.Dr Anne Mary Fernandez, Registrar, KarunyaUniversity extended facilitations to theorganizers and delegates.

The inaugural function was followed bya on “Web 2.0: Tools and Technologies”. Thefirst session was taken by Prof. Dr V Saravanan,HOD, Dept of Computer Applications,Karunya University along with a productdemonstration by Mr Prakash Kamdar, Directorof Digisys Technologies Pvt Ltd, Ahmedabad.After lunch, the tutorial on Web 2.0 wascontinued by Dr M Tamizchelvan, Librarian,Sri Krishna College of Engineering and

Technology, Coimbatore who appraised thedelegates about the various Web 2.0 tools likeBlogs, RSS, Wikis, etc.

The second day of the Convention startedwith a tutorial on Koha : Open Source LibraryIntegrated System conducted by Sangeeta Kaul,Network Manager, DELNET and followed bya product demonstration by Mr Varun,Cambridge online journals and Mr BharatNagrecha of Beeges Computers, Mumbai.

The third and fourth day of theconference had six technical sessions on thefollowing themes: User studies and digitalresources; Resource sharing and librarynetworking; Library Management; InformationSociety and Libraries; Content Management;

Web technologies. Keynote addresses byeminent professionals like Mr. E. Rama Reddy,Retd. Librarian, Univ. of Hyderabad, Prof.Manorama Srinath, Retd. Student Professional Awareness Venture ’08(SPAVe’08) at Kongu Engineering College

The Student Branch of IEEE at KonguEngineering College had conducted the

Student Professional Awareness Venture(SPAVe’ 08) programme on 27th Sep 2008.Prof. K. Narayanan, HOD, EIE welcomedthe gathering. The presidential addresswas given by Prof. S. Kuppuswami,Principal. Ms.Nivedita, Joint Secretaryintroduced the chief guest Mr. C.Robinson, chief security analyst ofwww.ethicaluniversity.com who gave aguest lecture on Google analytics.

Mr. Robinson, began with a briefdescription of the basic terminologies usedextensively throughout most of Google’sproducts with special emphasis on site usagestatistics. Site usage provides details such asthe number of visitors that visit the websiteover a month or a week. He, then explained theassociated statistics like whether the samevisitor visits the site again, the duration of thevisits and tracing new users and their detailsetc. He then delved deeper into underlyingGoogle technologies like Google Gears — thathelp in speeding up websites and helping theend user, Project hosting solutions anddevelopers which could be accessed throughcode.google.com, API’s help in getting existingprojects, modifying them and republishing them.

The next section of Mr. Robinson’s talkwas a brief lecture on how to make moneyonline, and increasingly popular alternative towork@company trends. He went on to say thatmost people already have the necessary skillsto effectively make money online, the basicneeds being a few web programming technologies

like HTML and PHP, designing skills withPhotoshop and above all good communicationand literary skills.

Mr. Robinson said that Google servicesare based around Google’s search engine whichoptimizes search results using a largely artificialintelligence based system. Supported file typesand formats were shown and interesting newmethod of obtaining CCTV footage wherein IPaddresses were used to locate different camerasand their details. More on the technical side,Mr. Robinson explained the life cycle of a googlequery – web server to index server queryprocessing, the query travels to the documentserver for snippet generation and obtaining thesearch result.

After giving a brief introduction aboutGoogle Suggest, which provides more refinedsearch results and is best suited for novel andarticle searches, he moved on to the world ofGoogle Adsense. The overview page of Adsensegives us what we have got as payment so far indollars through Adsense. A typical Adsense pageconsists of: Adsense content, Adsense for

search, account status, references and a viewtab (to view detailed transaction reports).Visitors form the basis for making money usingAdsense and visitors were usually attracted tocontent that was original and not copyrighted.Google accounts automatically suspend anyduplicate pages. Using Google Adwords, wecan create our own advertisements and displayit on the entire internet for public viewing. Italso keeps track of visitors.

Mr. Robinson warned the audience aboutthe threat of spammers and emphasized theimportance of watching our steps online.Domain stealers and sellers are common. Soverifying the domain ownership was of utmostimportance. E-payments and conversions couldbe made safely and securely using paypal.comonline banking services. Using this service, wecan send and receive funds, transfer to localbank accounts, and use a variety of supportedcurrencies.

In the afternoon paper presentationsession, 13 papers were presented. Two bestpapers were selected for awards. A technicalquiz comprising of three suspense-filled roundswas followed. After tough competition, oneteam out of five was selected. The Quiz wasfollowed by technical dumb charades in which5 teams participated. After three rounds, thetop two teams were selected for prizes. A C-debugging competition was also held in parallelin which 12 shortlisted participants contestedstrongly for awards. The function ended with abrief video presentation session, followed bythe prize distribution.

Security Enhancement of Mobile Networks Using JINI Technology

1.0 INTRODUCTION

A network is a group of interconnectedsystems that share services, data and interactthrough a communications link. There are fourthings that must be present in a network: 1)two or more individual systems 2) somethingto share (ex: data) 3) a transmission medium 4)rules of communication or protocols. Theexisting model of the communication in anetwork consists of seven layers. It is called asthe OSI (Open System Interconnection) model.1) Physical 2) Data link 3) Network 4)Transport 5) Session 6) Presentation 7)Application. Ad hoc networks are a newwireless networking paradigm for mobile hosts.Unlike traditional mobile wireless networks, adhoc networks do not rely on any fixedinfrastructure, instead, hosts rely on each otherto keep the network connected. One mainchallenge in the design of these networks is theirvulnerability to security attacks. To overcomethe security threats in the networks we use JINItechnology which is a runtime infrastructure toadd, remove, locate, and access network services.

2.0 LITERATURE SURVEY

2.1 REMOTE PDA PRINTING: It involvespersonal digital assistants to retrieve data froman office and takes printout of it at a businesscentre. It was done by SUN MICROSYSTMSin 2000. Here, PDA (Personal Digital Assistant)uses discovery and join to find lookup service,and then it obtains RMI (Remote MethodInvocation) Interface to service. PDA locateslookup services at office through Internet andfinds printing service. Lookup returns proxy toprinting service. PDA displays GUI (GraphicUser Interface) for selection from proxy service.PDA finds proxy from Storage service. PDAuser configures the printer through proxyservice. Document is dragged and dropped fromthe storage to printer.

2.2 ADTRANZ PROJECT: An R&D projectwas done for the railway manufacturer Adtranz,and was experimented with JINI technology inorder to evaluate it in an industrial application.Two potential application domains wereidentified. The first application domain concerns

the embedded devices on a train. They areinterconnected with a train communicationnetwork. As the composition of a train changesover time, the communication network mustconfigure itself automatically and when the trainis powered up, it should reconfigure automaticallywhen locomotives and cars are added to orremoved from the train. The second applicationdomain is the integration of the on-boardsystems of a vehicle fleet into the back officesystem of an operator and a manufacturer.

2.3 MULTICAST REQUEST PROTOCOL:JINI entities must be able to perform multicastdiscovery messaging when they have beenstarted, for there is a possibility that after amajor network restart, the network is floodedwith messages. The discovering entity sets upa TCP server. Lookup servers run instances ofthe multicast request server, which listen formulticast requests from discovering entities.The discovering entity performs a multicast thatrequests references to the lookup services. Thelookup server connects to the discoveringentity’s multicast response server, and uses aunicast discovery to provide a reference to itself.This was implemented by Johannes Lehto fromthe Department of Computer Science,University of Joensuu, 2001.

2.4 ORBITZ: It created an environment of about800 servers, 90 software developers, 3.9 millionlines of code in the web system with 110,000being added or deleted every week,(most is inthe application layer rather than the serviceslayer) and it sent over 775,000 wirelessmessages in Dec 2003 using JINI technology.

2.5 FORD: Ford Research and PsiNaptic Inc.used JINI technology for Integration of factory-installed and after-market vehicle components andsensors because of complex interdependenciesof components and increased demand forintegration of consumer devices. It was done in 2004.

3.0 PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

The commonly used network system iscongested and not reliable. Moreover, it facesthe problems of:

Finding and connecting services on anetwork, much like the componentproblem in standard, single-address space,object-oriented programming

Creating reliable sets of services out ofunreliable parts, including an unreliablenetwork

Evolving parts of the service set withouthalting the service set itself at any time.

4.0 OBJECTIVE

The problem of reliability is consideredand the security is enhanced using the JINItechnology. Reasons for using JINI technologyis that it is protocol-independent, the need todesign to each layer is eliminated, createsapplications and services that interact withoutpreinstalled drivers and has self healing nature.

4.1 REQUIREMENTS: To be able to run aJINI service or client it requires some hardware.A device must implement the TCP/IP(Transmission Control Protocol over InternetProtocol) and UDP/IP (User Datagram Protocolover Internet Protocol), preferably with DHCP(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). Thenetwork also must support multicast. To beable to use a service a specific client or somekind of service browser must be used.Furthermore, both the client and the server mustrun Java with the Jini-extension installed. JINITechnology is built on the JAVA technologyand uses its features like the Java Virtualmachine, Virtual Object code, Downloadablecode, Unified type system.

5.0 METHODOLOGY

There should be a way to restrict accessto particular groups. Jini provides a way usingJava 2 security mechanisms to limit what groupsa service or application can join. When a serviceor an application tries to create a LookupDiscovery object, the code checks to seewhether the creator has permission to try todiscover each of the sets of the desired groups.

LookupDiscovery will raise ajava.lang.SecurityException if the properprivileges are not in place. By default,applications are allowed to search no groups.

Permission need to be set for even trustedprograms. Create a policy file and pass the fileto JVM (Java Virtual Machine) via thejava.security.policy property. Jini introducesits own permission class just for grantingaccess to groups. This class is:net.jini.discovery.DiscoveryPermission.

Can any individual learn optimism? Yes,according to renowned psychologist Dr. MartinSeligman, you can … and if you believe theresearch, you probably should!

Let us consider a classic comparison ofopinions between an optimist and a pessimist,the difference will be clear. Both of them observea glass filled up half with water. The pessimistsays, The glass is half empty. The optimist says,The glass is half full.

According to Dr Martin Seligman,Psychology is much larger than curing mentalillness or curing diseases. It’s about bringingout the best in people; it’s about positiveinstitutions; it’s about strength of character.

Let us understand the rules of optimism.Never flock with the failures, always go withthe winners. Avoid black and white statements.You must believe in what you do and in whatyou want to achieve. You must believe that youcan succeed and you will. You must believe inthe statement, Failure is the first stepping stoneto success.

Great Britain faced obstacles on all frontsduring the Second World War. Britain’s PrimeMinister Sir Winston Churchill said, A pessimistsees the difficulty in every opportunity, an optimistsees the opportunity in every difficulty. Withcontinued optimism and sheer will power, GreatBritain managed to wade against all troublesand came out victorious.

Individuals always interpret things in thepositive or negative way. It has been identifiedthat there are three primary elements of ourexplanatory style: permanence, pervasivenessand personalization. A quick overview of thethree P’s:

Permanence: Permanence is prettystraightforward. Something happens. Do youexplain the results as permanent and likely torecur? If it’s a bad thing, the optimist tends tothink it is a fluke. If it’s a good thing, they tendto think it permanent.

The opposite holds true for thepessimist: Good things are the flukes and badthings are more likely to recur.

The Powers ofOptimism

Pervasiveness: Pervasiveness looks atwhether we believe an event is specific oruniversal. With a good event, the optimist ismore likely to extend it to her whole life. Witha bad event, the optimist will tend to isolate theincident as specific to that situation. Theopposite holds true for the pessimist. Ifsomething good happens, they think that it wasa fluke. If something bad happens, they think itis a representative of their whole life.

Personalization: Personalization looks atwhether we believe that we are responsible forthe event, or if something outside of our controlwas responsible. The fancy psychological termfor it is locus of control, whether you believethe control was internal or external.

There are many types of windows. Thereare French, rectangular, square, oval, triangularwindows. The purpose of a window is to revealwhat is going on in the outside world. A personwho looks out through a window may seegarbage, destroyed buildings, dead people andso on. On the other hand, a person may seegardens, meadows, rainbows and so on. How aperson sees through a window determines hisperspective of life. The person who sees thedirt of the world is a pessimist while the latteris an optimist. One should never look at thingsat rationally but must appreciate things for theirbeauty. Two prisoners looked out of their prisonwindow. One saw mud while the other saw

stars. The former dreamt of nothing but theguillotine while the latter felt that there washope in him being saved.

Robert Bruce was king of Scotland from1306 to 1329. Robert Bruce waged wars withEdward I, king of England but each time he wasdefeated miserably. In 1305, Robert Bruce waslying in a hut, when his eye was caught by aspider - the creature was hanging by a longsilvery thread from one of the wooden beamsabove his head, and trying to swing itself toanother beam. The spider tried again and again,failing every time. Six times, counted Robert,the spider tried and failed. Six times, thoughtRobert to himself, have I fought against theEnglish and failed. Robert thought, Now if thisspider fails again on the seventh attempt, I tooshall give up the fight for Scotland. But if itsucceeds, I shall try again. The spider swungitself again and finally, on the seventh attempt,it succeeded. The perseverance of the spiderinspired Robert Bruce to achieve victory.

I hope every individual gives up the wayof negatively looking at things so that everyindividual starts behaving professionally andproperly.

Conclusion: Is your glass half full or halfempty? In either case, fill it all the way up witha healthy dose of optimism!

Social Networking is a Lot More Than MySpace and YouTubeJust what is social networking? Ask three

people, and you’ll get three different answers.Although most people have a general idea of thebasic concept, social networking means differentthings to different people depending on theirbackground, interests, goals, and level ofcomputer savvy. MySpace (www.myspace.com) andYouTube (www.youtube.com) are two of themost popular sites on the web. For many people,these two sites satisfy all their social networkingneeds. But the world of social networking ismuch larger than its two highest profile sites.Business networkers could determine socialnetworking isn’t right for them after visitingMySpace and YouTube if they didn’t also checkout the many business-oriented sites that couldoffer them much greater benefits.
