LORENZO QUINN

LORENZO QUINN IS at the top of his game. no longer ha-bitually referred to as ‘son of Anthony Quinn’ (the late, great actor) he has assuredly established himself as one of the most dynamic and challenging sculptors of his generation.

there are themes and references throughout his work to the great figurative masters – from michelangelo, Bernini, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux to Auguste Rodin, and while much of his work is inspired by the legacy and sheer magnitude of their work, Quinn has reinterpreted elements of their art for a modern audience. now liv-ing in Barcelona he frequently returns to Italy to gain inspiration and knowledge. “Inspiration comes from everyday life, from something I read, from conversations with people, family milestones. Essentially anything that stirs an emotion in me,” he says.

Although raised partly in Italy, it was in Rome that he discovered his love for art and he started out as a painter in 1982, after training at the American Academy of Fine Arts in new York. After a brief and successful stint as an actor he returned to his first love – art, and specifically surrealist art having ironically played the master of the form Salvador Dali in one of his acting roles. the transition from art to sculpture was a smooth one as he finally identified sculpture as the most powerful way of delivering his artistic vision to an audi-ence. “For all the superficial things in life, having a famous father has been an asset, but for the more difficult aspects of life it’s been hard because people expect so much more from you,” says Quinn.

A great believer in the democracy of art he is a champion of the collector rather than the critic. “I make art for myself and people who wish to come along for a ride through my dreams,” he says.

Internationally renowned sculptor Lorenzo Quinn, creator of inspirational modern sculpture, has conquered the art world with his powerful bronzes and ground breaking monumental structures

Quinn is as much a wordsmith as an artist and all his pieces are accompanied by poems or pieces of prose. He says it is important that they act as a ‘whole’ and each structure can only exist and be truly understood with the accompanying words. “I don’t believe in art being purely decora-tive work to match the colour of your sofa or walls. It should have a meaning and transmit emotions; it must say something to me - and the people that observe it,” he explains.

He is inspired to sculpt by life’s everyday experiences as well as by poems, literature and what he calls ‘observing life’s energy’, but admits it is his children who keep him grounded. they are, he maintains, sometimes his harshest and most percep-tive critics. they give him ideas and he says he listens acutely to their observations. “Children are so natural and their emotional response so instinctive,” adds Quinn.

the human hand is a unifying theme in his latest collection. A much favoured sub-ject, Quinn believes that sculpture is there

to be touched and felt. "the reason I sculpt the hand is because I need to commu-nicate in a universal language, especially since I exhibit in fi ve continents. the use of this 'hand language' helps me achieve this, creating a dialogue rather than a mono-logue," he says. "It is a powerful symbol, it has the power to express love, to hate, to create, to destroy.”

In ‘First Love’ a pair of hands is ingen-iously linked as if in mid air conveying the extraordinary strength and vulnerability of a fi rst love. “Love comes upon you unexpect-edly, grabs you, lifts you off your feet and

drops you on top of a deserted island with an ocean of unchartered waters all around,” explains Quinn in his accompanying text. "I remember crying, my first memory of true love is one of complete helplessness. my whole existence was involved and nothing else would fit. there was no room for any other emotion.

In his piece 'trust’, a sense of awe and wonder is conveyed as a human figure lies in an open palm. It is an image of purity and honesty which Quinn says is paramount in building human relationships. “the most wonderful feeling and greatest responsibil-

ity is that of knowing that someone has complete trust in you,” says Quinn. “I have been working constantly on gaining my children’s absolute trust. they need to know that their father's love is unconditional but they must also understand that, as anything that unites people together, it’s a journey that must be travelled together.”

In the same way, his striking ‘Decisions’ is a man at a crossroads. Quinn likens making decisions as similar to a train about to take a different line. “It’s about putting things in perspective, about the decisions, even small ones, that we have to make every day. All our calculations are partly choice, so do what your heart tells you and your mind will follow.”

Sculpture is never just figurative or deco-rative for Quinn. His stunning ‘Creation’ sculpture (page 4) displays the mastery of his art. the perfect shape of an egg is framed by two pointing fingers directly inspired by michaelangelo’s

iconic painting ‘Creation of Adam’. Quinn sees this juxtaposition of perfection in man and nature as proof of mans’ ability to live within an ideal world. A homage to two of his greatest inspirations, michelangelo and Salvador Dali, Quinn says: “It has always amazed me to see how the ancient cultures such as the Egyptians were able to create the perfect forms of the pyramids and how nature has created simple forms like an egg. this shows me that man and nature could be in perfect symbiosis.”

this piece represents Quinn’s own towering talent as well as providing a fitting tribute to the great artists michelangelo and Salvador Dali. He says: "this sculpture is my tribute to these two great masters, but especially to Dali to whom I owe my initia-tion into the art world."

Something for which his legions of col-lectors around the world will be eternally grateful.

Original work by two Washington Green artists will feature in Harrods window display this Christmas, as part of its Wizard of Oz theme to celebrate the fi lm's 70th anniversary. Specially commissioned by the world-famous store, John Wilson has created a stun-ning three-dimensional Yellow Brick Road painting, and Sarah Graham an enchanted piece entitled 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'. Graham's painting will also be produced in a very limited edition of just 70, on sale exclusively at Harrods for £450.

Simon Gudgeon’s iconic new sculpture -Isis - recently unveiled in Hyde Park is the focal point of a £1.8 million fundraising campaign for a new children’s education centre, launched by the Royal Parks Foundation in con-junction with London’s Halcyon Gal-lery. Sitting proudly on the banks of the Serpentine, Isis includes a donation box at its base together with 1,000 plaques. Each plaque is inscribed with the names of people who have given £1,000 or more to the cause.

More than a third of the plaques have already been sold and laid around the base of Isis. To date, over £1 million has been pledged for the campaign.

NOT MANY SPORTSMEN admit to interests far removed from the sporting sphere but michael Vaughan has never been shy of declaring his passion for art. “I always liked art at school and it has stayed with me,” explains the man who famously led his team to an historic Ashes victory in 2005.

He has put this interest in modern art into practice by creating the art of ‘artballing’ which may be best described as a riotous and colourful mixture of Jackson Pollock meets Damien Hirst. Vaughan creates the work by skillfully hitting, throwing and even bowling a sticky paint covered cricket ball against a blank canvas. It is a simple con-cept that produces highly original results.

As the most successful captain in the his-tory of English cricket, it's sometimes easy to forget Vaughan the batsman. He was placed as number one in the world batting rankings with eighteen centuries to his name. many of the distinctive works feature his famous shots - the ‘drive’, ‘square cut’ and ‘pull’ - and are simply done by playing the authentic shots, usually covered from head to toe in protective white painting overalls rather than cricket whites.

Vaughan’s appreciation for modern art was cemented back in the early 2000s by an unlikely source – his cricketing team mate Ashley Giles, who introduced him to

the world of cutting edge urban art. “On rained-off afternoons, during a London test match, he would take me down to the galleries in Shoreditch to check out the latest shows,” says Vaughan, who now actively seeks out abstract expressionist art for his own personal collection.

His new passion has evoked an enthusi-astic response. "I tell people what I'm doing and they raise an eyebrow and say, 'Oh really?'" Vaughan says. "But then they see the fi nished works and it really takes them aback, which is great. Almost everyone who's seen them has been hugely and pleasantly surprised."

Vaughan says he has a ‘decent idea’ of what image he wants to produce before he starts to create the freestyle canvasses and then relies on his eye-to-hand co-ordina-tion to execute the idea.

Created in a Yorkshire warehouse studio it’s a delightfully messy process but one which beautifully melds his twin passions of art and cricket. “What I really like about the images is the variety,” says Vaughan, who varies the colour of his paints and his canvases as well as the number of ‘hits' on each painting, the choice of shot, and also his proximity to the canvas.

Vaughan’s work charts the narrative of his successful cricketing career. “With the art it’s been good to get away from cricket

and switch off those thought processes which are required to captain and play at the highest level. It helps you mentally,” adds Vaughan who dreamed up the concept partly as ‘therapy’ after his emotional resig-nation as England captain in 2008.

An inspired gift for any keen cricket fan these prints also stand alone as vibrant

pieces of abstract art. Each highly collect-able edition is personally hand-signed by michael Vaughan.

New to viewWashington Green is well known for finding exciting talent. this season, we have four new artists joining us, each with their own distinctive and eye-catching style - adding new dimensions to our diverse portfolio

BILL BAtEBATE'S STRIkING AND dramatic style evolved from his continuing fascination with the human form and the use of light and shade to give it excitement and mood.

His figurative skills developed whilst he was studying for a Fine Arts Degree at Central School of Art and Design in London, where he graduated in 1984. "It was a great education as it introduced me to more abstract ideas as well as develop-ing figurative skills. Although it was a difficult process at times, it encouraged me to experiment and I needed that. "

Following graduation he continued to evolve as an artist, exhibiting in London and galleries throughout the uK. A great admir-er of Caravaggio, Klimt, J W Waterhouse,

Alma tadema and Bacon, and with an interest in Rothko's mood and atmosphere, his work features the strength and beauty of the body surrounded by a cloudy aura.

Bate's powerful début collection is inspired by his experiences on the coasts of Egypt and South Africa. "I've tried to achieve a balance between what the eye sees, the reality if you like, and contrast it with the excitement and freedom you feel in water," he says. natural elements like the wind and sun also play a vital part in the overall composition. "When you're by the sea, the light is intensified and makes you focus on a particular part of the subject. Yet the areas in shade just merge into the atmosphere. It gives the body a blurred ap-pearance but also one that is full of energy."

Working at a studio in a converted ware-house in Wimbledon, London, which he shares with other artists, Bill starts a painting with an image in his mind of how he wants it to be, but after sketching the initial pose on the canvas the image develops and takes on its own path. taking reference from many sources including models, imagina-tion and life all around him, he works from dark to light, laying on dark brown or blue washes as a ground, and building up from there whilst still wet. He works on a canvas for a few hours before leaving it to dry, working on two or three in this way and returning to them with fresh eyes. "I aim to achieve ‘tight’ realism in parts of a painting whilst in other areas leaving it loose and less defi ned. this is to escape the confi nes that realism can impose and to be more expressive."

LInDA CHARLESBORN IN THE South East of England, Linda's

main artistic background is abstract work, with her interest sparked during her years studying textiles and fashion at Herriot Watt university in Scotland. She began design-ing work incorporating heavy texture using materials such as gold and silver leaf, with her use of colour at the time lending itself to the advent of the interior design boom of the early 2000s and her work starting to sell in large quantities worldwide.

texture still pervades her paintings but over the last couple of years she has been working on concepts where she can combine an abstract feel with real life

imagery. Her three brand new pieces for the new Autumn collection refl ects this approach beautifully. "the use of colour and texture create a sharp, abstract feel to one of my most idyllic settings – a quiet, still, river backwater, hidden from the masses and discovered by a knowing few. A place where you can lose yourself in the tranquil surroundings isolated from the world and left alone with your thoughts." using light to create dramatic refl ections of colour in the still waters, the viewer is taken into the depth of the picture. mystery then surrounds the end of the river leaving what is round the corner through the dark opening unknown. "my aim is to take each viewer on a ‘journey of feeling.’ through the gentle still water adorned with drag weed, past the great masses of bright colourful trees and bushes into the depth

of the image and the mystery that awaits."Linda lives with her partner Keith and

their young son Charlie in a beautiful part of Hertfordshire surrounded by nature and rolling countryside, which provides inspiration for her work. "I take Doug, our Golden Retriever, for long walks to nearby Hatfi eld forest. It's a national trust site that was once the location of a hunting lodge used by Henry VIII, and the forest covers a large unspoilt area featuring a big lake and quiet backwaters. It’s here that I am in my element using my sketchpad or taking photographs." Once back in the studio, she draws on the calm and tranquil feel of the forest and the lake, sketching out the scene of her work and marking areas where she wants to build texture for effect. She also incorporates vibrancy through uplifting colours to create intensity and excitement, enabling the piece to hover delicately between abstract and real life imagery.

ADAm BARSBYAS A PROFES-SIONAL artist for the last 13 years,

Adam's work is inspired by wonderfully happy childhood memories of family holi-days by the English coast and an ongoing love affair with Cornwall. "I’ve always been drawn to the sea, and when I'm not in Cornwall I think a lot about the last time I was. Its atmosphere and mood forms the backdrop to my work, and although I don’t live by the sea, in many ways my work brings me closer to it."

Born in Leicester to parents who were creative in their own right - his mother a hairdresser with strong visual ability and his father spending endless hours building models as a hobby - Adam began drawing at an early age and went on to graduate from the Kent Institute of Art and Design with a fi rst class honours degree. He turned professional in 1996 winning the ‘Best up and Coming Artist’ title in 1999 and ‘Best Selling Artist in the uK’ in 2000, and has

been nominated three times for ‘Best Pub-lished Artist’ in 2001, 2002 and 2003. He has also lectured at several art colleges across the midlands.

Infl uences in Adam's work come from C R W nevinson and Paul nash, whose work he studied and has admired since he was a student. "the artists' colony of St Ives in Cornwall has been a great infl uence too, and where I discovered the naïve work of Alfred Wallis." His passion and affection for the coast is delightfully evident in all his work and he relies on memories, sketches, photographs, seascape artists and even the television to inspire him. "Some days when it’s wet and miserable it’s just the best thing to close my eyes, think about where I’d like to be standing right there and then, and begin to formulate a composition. "

After originally working in a studio from nine to fi ve, Adam now works from home and with a more relaxed attitude, which he believes has helped him to create what is in his opinion his best work to date. "I paint when I want to and fi nd that I enjoy it a lot more. my work is not forced or pushed be-cause I need to paint, but because I want to paint." Since his son was born, he has also moved from painting in one go to a slower and more considered pace. Although his work now takes longer to complete, he feels that it enables him to be more critical, which enhances the fi nished result. "Once I begin the painting I work as if building a jigsaw puzzle, starting in one area and completing that before moving on to the next. Over the following days the image takes shape, and sometimes I change the narrative elements that provide the story within the picture. Finally I like to live with the completed image for a day or two in case I want to make any changes."

KEn ORtOnBORN IN BIRMINGHAM and a graduate of

Birmingham and manchester Colleges of Art, Ken taught art in Birmingham for six years before leaving for Spain, where he was in charge of the Joan miro Centro de Arte at the Baleares International School for 20 years. He moved to the uSA in 1999 and now splits his time between new York's Catskill mountains and the Gulf Coast of Florida. "I have long been an America fanatic and I always wanted to live in the uSA. I have travelled to almost every state and I am still enormously impressed by the sheer scale of the landscape and its tremendous diversity. the American landscape is inspirational and the country’s paraphernalia such as old cars, old bars, and old guitars have found their way onto my canvases."

As a child Ken was a frequent visitor to many galleries and museums, and remembers thinking "wow" the fi rst time

he saw Ford maddox Brown’s 'the Last of England'. He knew then that he wanted to be able to paint like that and get that same reaction from his viewers. He has certainly achieved his aim and has become a well-known artist, with collectors buying his work the world over. As well as winning a number of painting awards and several 'best of show' awards throughout the uSA, he has also won the Washington Square Painting Prize - new York City's oldest art show - and regards it as a cherished honour to follow in the footsteps of the many notable artists who have won it before him.

When Ken bought his house in the Catskills, he found case after case of pristine mason jars in the cellar. "I bought a few up into the kitchen and after studying them for some days I began to see that this was a quite remarkable subject. through painting glass I have exposed an endless path of discoveries. I can paint photorealist images, but also be more expressionistic whilst achieving what I believe to be powerful and engaging work of art."

independently, as "the raised lettering on the jars and bottles, by their prismatic nature, have an ability to capture tone and colour from one side of the composition and pull it to the other." using many procedures that require drying and over-painting, he is invariably working on multiple paintings, consequently there might be weeks without a finished piece

emerging from his studio and then a day when he puts the final touches to three of four works.

His new collection is a particularly meaningful one for Ken as it is the first time he is exhibiting in the uK. "I have won many prizes in the uSA for my works and received many accolades but it's an enormous joy for me and a lifelong dream

fulfilled to show my work in the land of my birth. I am delighted to bring this new collection of work to the uK."

CAROLINE SHOTTON

mooviN' oN UPCaroline Shotton, affectionately known as ‘the Cow Lady’ by her many followers, has proved herself again with a witty and colourful new exhibition of works

AS ONE OF the top selling contempo-rary artists in the uK, Caroline Shotton’s new collection 'moovin' marks a major development in style and technique for the Oxfordshire artist mother of two. “I think of this collection as like a diary really. It’s inspired by my family and cows, but not constructed in a particular way, and refl ects my life and wider things going on in the world.” While cleverly retaining all the charm and humour of her signature style, the new paintings display a more matured and considered style as each piece is designed to elicit an emotional response and convey Shotton’s own comments on society.

the unlikely starting point for all Shotton’s work is the title. “For me it’s always about

the title – I pick up ideas from the radio, newspapers, anything really and always have a pun or word play idea going on in my head,” she explains. most artists would work the other way round but she sees her addictive conjuring up of words and

phrases as a great source of inspiration. the beautiful and melancholy ‘Beef Dripping’ is quintessential Shotton: “I had this ‘Beef Dripping’ title in my head for ages which I remembered from my childhood and as I watched cows munching grass in the pouring rain I realised I had fi nally found the picture for my title and then I started to paint,” she explains.

the 'moovin' collection also sees Shotton use her cows as a cipher for many of her messages about life, love and the darker, tougher times of the modern world. “I didn’t plan their development in any linear way – the cows were originally a kind of comfort blanket for my son when I fi rst drew one on his nursery wall. For him there was a sense that the cow was there watching over him even when I had left the room,” she explains. now they have developed into not just bovine faces with intriguing and enig-matic expressions, but as a way to convey a range of emotions and viewpoints about the human condition. “I have always created work that stems from personal experience yet allows others to add their own narrative,” she says.

‘moovin’ is a delightfully diverse collection, from a

light hearted take on the humorous antics of children in ‘Dairy milk’, which depicts a cow bursting through a chocolate bar wrapper, face covered in chocolate, through to a topical and poignant look at the credit crunch in ‘Cash Cow’ with a devious cow’s head appearing on a giant, crumpled American dollar bill. Shotton says the inspiration came from a Lucky Dollar she has kept for years, and her own evalu-ation of what money and success means.

“money’s a strange thing, it can tear you apart when you

have it, it can tear you apart when you don’t. this

image is intended to make people smile and be positive

For You’ she has torn up a mass of tabloid headlines and incorporated them into the main body of the picture. “I’ve always loved this tV programme and found the title perfect for a piece depicting tabloid gossip – only everything here has a positive spin.” the words of one Guardian art critic who attacked her work as simplistic and typical of the kind of work that is ‘designed to annoy art critics’ is now torn up and forms part of the background of the picture. “I can take criticism on the chin,” says Shotton, but she gets a wry sense of satisfaction from knowing his harsh words contributed to a piece of her highly successful collection. “It’s my way of putting two fi ngers up to the art establishment,” she laughs.

Shotton takes a long leisurely stare at the lighter and romantic moments in life with an amusing spoof of ‘the Good, the Bad And the ugly’ featuring a devil cow, an angelic cow, and a cow with a paper bag over her head. “I really enjoyed painting this piece and even though at fi rst glance it looks like a triptych, the clouds merge together to give it continuity. the angelic

cow next to the devilish one was an easy contrast but I didn’t have the heart to paint an ugly one. By putting the bag over her head you can imagine she’s actually quite beautiful underneath.”

the power and simplicity of love is also explored in ‘mooon River’ (page 21) in which a portrait of a pair of doe eyed cows epitomises the power of true love with the

backdrop of a milky white harvest moon, while ‘I Give my Heart to moo’ is a simple affi rmation of devotion and affection as the soulful looking cow stares out of the picture. For critics who say Shotton is a one cow wonder this collection gives much food for thought.

Shotton loves the reaction she gets from her buying public and fi nds it immensely rewarding. One fan that came to a gallery had a Shotton cow tattooed on her arm which she admits she found “a bit extreme - but rather fl attering too.” Like many artists she fi nds the process of creating a collection a solitary and intense one and the experience of going to galleries and talking to collectors is the fi nal part in the artistic experience. “these pictures are designed to catch the eye and collectors say when they have them on their wall at home they build up a relationship with them and they become conversation pieces. the cows become like family to me – it’s hard to let them go but lovely to see people enjoy them.”

not content with confi ning her signature cows to four sides of a picture frame, Caroline Shotton strikes out into new territory with a highly desirable range of accessories, which would make a perfect gift for any fashionista!

“THE COWS ARE moovin' on to pastures new” is how Caroline Shotton describes her exciting move into a fashion accessory range featuring many of her favourite cow characters. It’s an eclectic range which includes a luxury leather handbag and purse as well as key rings, bottle stop, compact and cuffl inks.

Combining art with a stylish twist, these covetable pieces provide art lovers with a unique way to add to their personal collection. Designs based on the best selling painting 'I Love moo' are cleverly presented as a heart shaped key ring, a classy silver compact mirror and a beautifully presented pill box. For wine lovers the cow bottle stop in silver provides a hu-morous note to any dinner table; whilst the quirky cuffl inks will make an instant style statement and add the perfect fi nishing touch to any outfi t - for him or her.

One of the most covetable items is the soft luxury leather handbag. “It’s designed for busy people – mothers like me who need a bag on their shoulder and hands free,” explains Shotton who sees no reason to compromise on something that is both practical and good looking.

“For me it was not so much a commer-cial decision as much as one that allowed me to explore and revisit my training in graphic art and typography” says Shotton. “I really liked the idea of creating the special

packaging and presenting something new and a bit different to collectors.” Part of Shotton’s ambition is to reach out to a wider art audience as well as provide a new outlet for her many fans. “the reaction has been great from people so far. It’s proved to be a really accessible way for people to get into art and fi nd out about my other work”.

Paul Horton's imaginative new collection takes to the road

Often been described as a modern day Lowry, Paul Horton is renowned for his wonderful array of characters and street scenes with universal themes. this season sees the launch of his fabulous new 'Love is Life' collection across galleries nationwide

PAUL'S NEW COLLECTION of nine limited edition pieces of artwork and a limited edition sculpture captures new and exciting storylines as well as familiar subject matter. Aptly subtitled 'the Art of the Storyteller', the work is striking and beautiful and has an immediacy and innocence, with the world he has created connecting with the everyman and bringing with it many elements that people of all ages and in all walks of life can relate to. He paints from his imagination and from his heart and soul, taking inspiration from the world of theatre, fantasy and storytelling. He never ceases to be thrilled by the positive reaction to his work and knowing that what he creates speaks such volumes to people. "I am most proud that the world and the characters I have created get tremendously positive responses from the public." He is also very excited by the prospect of meeting new people up and down the country during the tour – his fi fth in the uK. "the gallery is my environment; my stage. It's a wonderful opportunity for me to meet new people and tell some of the stories and inspiration behind my work. Knowing that people are getting so much from my paintings inspires me further."

Some of Paul's new pieces return to the familiar scenes of his industrial art with the working man pounding the terraced back streets on his inevitable and relent-less journey to work in a piece entitled ‘Life & times’. "these everyday scenes have formed a cornerstone of my work, and since his fi rst appearance 'the Working man' has become an iconic fi gure within my paintings."

PAUL HORTON

Paul pays a rare visit to the sea in the ro-mantic ‘Love Is Life’. His fi rst painting of the sea came about when he was giving talks at schools and a young primary school pupil commented that he never paints the sea. Paul promised him that he would. "the fantastic public feedback inspired me to create my seascape pieces. to me 'Love Is Life' has become the embodiment of this collection. I have tried to capture a timeless world that represents love and the family, bringing with it happy memories of family holidays and a sense that we all need to love and be loved."

"I love the idea of becoming a storyteller through my paintings. the wizard character affords me the opportunity to enter into another world; to journey to a time of magic and mystery - a world where anything is possible!" Hope is another strong theme in his work, and the sense of anticipation can be felt in watching the tramp wandering into town in ‘When the Circus Comes to town’.

Paul has become increasingly transfi xed by man’s relationship with the planet. He continues to use the powerful symbol of noah's Ark, fi rst seen in earlier collec-tions and originally inspired by a worn and battered Victorian greeting card that was sent to him, with a picture of the ark on the front. ‘Fragile Earth’ shows an ark tilting in the melting icecaps, and although the piece has a clear subtext raising awareness of

would be very different to capture it against the polar ice caps where it is going to save animals in a very challenging place."

the 'Love is Life' tour had a very special and rather unusual launch at a gallery in his home town of Birmingham, where Paul ap-

peared with new musical talent Liam Blake who has just been signed by Chris Hughes, the former drummer of Adam & the Ants who became the successful producer of 80s pop sensation tears For Fears and who has worked with Robert Plant and Paul mcCartney.

Paul fi rst met Liam last year at a gallery exhibiting his work, where Liam asked if he could sing. Hugely impressed by Liam's talent as a singer and guitarist, they became fi rm friends and Paul was thrilled when he asked him to illustrate the cover for his début album, due out early next year. As well as unveiling the new collection, Paul had a number of his works brought to life in an animated short fi lm, which was screened whilst Liam was singing. "It was an incredible buzz to hear Liam singing live with the video playing in the background. It was great to collaborate on such an excit-ing project and go in such wonderful new directions."
