Happy New Year and Welcome Back

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to 2018 and AB Paterson College We have many new families joining us this year and I offer you a special welcome May your time in our College be special and may you come to make wonderful friends along the journey The holidays have been a very busy period for our College as we have refurbished a number of classrooms in the Senior School re-developed the Year 4 Classrooms into some of the most amazing educational spaces I have ever seen finished construction on the new Winton Playground and commenced the demolition works associated with our new building These many developments are not only exciting but demonstrate the highest commitment from our College to provide the very best educational facilities for our students I hope that you may have had a chance to look at the classrooms on your way through the College this week and perhaps played on the climbing equipment in the Winton Playground like so many of our Junior School staff who skipped a meeting to lsquohave a playrsquo ndash the evidence has been captured on film and has been posted on Facebook

Although our Academic Results Summary Booklet for 2017 will be released shortly I would like to commence the year by commending the 2017 Year 12 cohort on achieving some of the finest results in the Collegersquos history ndash a special congratulations to Rhiannon Hounslow (Dux 2017 and OP 1 Medallist) The results achieved were as follows OP1-5 26 students (377) (Best Result in College history) OP1-10 52 students (754) (2nd Best Result in College history) OP1-15 68 students (986) (2nd Best Result in College history) OP16-20 1 student (14) (2nd Best Result in College history) These are tremendous results and represent the finest overall academic results in our Collegersquos history I would like to commend our dedicated staff and students on these outstanding results Please see our Academic Results Summary Booklet available in a few weeks for a more detailed discussion on these results and the many scholarships won by our students The start of the year is a crucial time to set goals and I have strongly encouraged our students to do this today I have specifically offered the following thoughts at our first Assembly 1 Your journey for an incredible year begins here

and now 2 Donrsquot ever give up in anything you do 3 You will have to work hard in school ndash and there

will be times in which it will not always be easy

4 You will learn new things 5 Make wonderful new friends 6 But you will need to believe in yourself 7 Respect yourself ndash never lower yourself or your

standards 8 Respect others ndash treat them exactly as you would

like to be treated 9 Be true to who you are 10 Always be Positive 11 Believing in yourself is the first secret to success 12 Be ambitious in your goals ndash make sure you set

SMART goals 13 Stop Wishing and Start Doing 14 Remember to have fun along the way 15 Be proud of who you are and never let others

attempt to change you 16 Do good and good will come to you 17 Never give up on your dreams

18 And remember you will only get out of the year

what you put in I ask that you please talk to your child about these points and help to make them real in their world Our students need guidance support and encouragement and together we can achieve much

As I saw so many students arrive this morning I saw excitement and I saw more than just a few tears from parents ndash and not just our Prep parents Your children are growing up so fast and this is hard to see It seems like only yesterday I was holding my baby girl and she is just about to turn 16 Enjoy these moments together ndash they are special

Watching the wonderful warmth and emotion this week made me remember a beautiful poem written by a parent (not associated with our College) some time ago ndash Emma Robinson

Dear Teacher

I know youre rather busy First day back theres just no time

A whole new class of little ones And this one here is mine

Im sure you have things covered And have done this lots before

But my boy is very little He hasnt long turned four

In his uniform this morning He looked so tall and steady

But now beside your great big school Irsquom not quite sure hersquos ready

Do you help them eat their lunch Are you quick to soothe their fears

And if he falls and hurts his knee Will someone dry his tears

What if two kids have a fight And hersquos caught in between

Yoursquore right I have to leave now Itrsquos time for him to go

Irsquom sure hersquoll learn so much from you Things that I donrsquot know

Itrsquos just so fast you see

It seems like just a blink ago I first held him in my arms

Itrsquos been my job to love to teach To keep him safe from harm

So when I wave goodbye in a moment And he turns to walk inside

Forgive me if I crumple Into tears of loss and pride

I know as I give him one more kiss And watch him walk away

That hersquoll never again be wholly mine As he was before today

Shortly after receiving Emmarsquos poem her childrsquos teacher Ms Leonie Roberts responded

Dear Parent

I understand that you are scared to wave your child goodbye

and leave him in a teacherrsquos hands donrsquot worry if you cry

Irsquom used to weeping parents Itrsquos hard to leave I know

But itrsquos time to share him (just a bit) To help him learn and grow

Let me reassure you That Irsquoll give your child my best

Irsquoll wipe his tears soothe his fears And change his dirty vest

If your darling child is full of cold Irsquoll blow their nose all day

Just like you Irsquoll care for them In a special way

Irsquoll treat him like I would my own Irsquoll catch him from a fall and

If there is ANY problem Irsquoll be sure to tell you all

Itrsquos true hersquoll grow to love us Theyrsquoll talk of school a lot

It doesnrsquot mean they hate you And that you should lose the plot

Irsquoll tell you a secret That when your child is here

Staff Profile ndash Scott Lewis

Hello My name is Scott Lewis and I am very excited to be joining the Staff at AB Paterson College this year I have moved up from Sydney over the holiday break with my wife and two fur babies and am thrilled to be joining the College community For the past four years I have been teaching at Knox Grammar Preparatory School on Sydneyrsquos North Shore Over this time I was a Specialist Science Teacher and spent three years teaching Year 1 I am a self-proclaimed sports tragic My favourite sports are Rugby Union and Cricket but will happily watch anything on the TV I enjoy living a healthy and active lifestyle and I am looking forward to taking up surfing now that I am based on the Gold Coast I cannot wait to meet all of the wonderful students at AB Paterson College and get into the 2018 school year

Staff Profile ndash Daisy Ross

Hello 2018 My name is Daisy Ross and I am thrilled to be joining the Year 2 team

Over the course of the past four years I have been enjoying a variety of teaching experiences in London and more recently Melbourne and can I just say it is wonderful to be back on the Gold Coast

Gold Coast born and bred I completed both my primary and secondary education on the Gold Coast and my teaching degree in Brisbane at the University of Queensland I love to keep active with horse riding the gym and running high up on the list To unwind I love to read cook and travel

I look forward to meeting the wider AB Paterson College community in the coming days and weeks Unconventionally I shake hands as a lsquoleftyrsquo (I was in a boating accident as a child and I sustained some lsquowar woundsrsquo) PS I have a tendency to spice-up the story for the entertainment of the kids

Welcome back It has been so good to see the smiling faces of our children as they return to their new classrooms after their summer break full of energy and brimming with stories of happy holidays

There are many exciting events coming up during the term right across the Junior School the first of which will be the Junior School Parent Information and Social Evening to be held on 8 February This is a wonderful opportunity to meet with your childrsquos teacher who will talk to you about a range of relevant information and about ways to support your childrsquos learning We will also again be privileged to benefit from the parenting expertise of Dr Judith Locke who has supported College families for many years

I am looking forward to the year and continuing with the progressive work we undertake with the students and staff Something that is really important to me is developing strong homeschool partnerships Research tells us that when this relationship is functioning well children flourish and ultimately that is what both the school and the family want

I think it is timely at the beginning of a year to consider our individual role in developing homeschool partnerships and the personal contribution we make every day in making the College a better place This is the school you have selected for your children to attend There are so many ways that you can become involved and really make a positive difference Your children will benefit from this I look forward to meeting up with you as the year progresses

The start of any new school year is an exciting time If you cast your own mind back to your school days I am sure many of you will have fond memories of your first week back after the summer vacation Seeing friends again the anticipation of a new classroom meeting a new teacher and unpacking a fresh set of books and stationery are recollections that can genuinely last a lifetime

I am confident that the first week back for students in Years 4-6 has been one that has created lasting happy memories Year Four students have had the pleasure of moving into their newly renovated classrooms If you have not had the opportunity to look inside these classrooms yet I certainly encourage you to do so You will see classrooms designed and fitted to facilitate 21st Century learning with an emphasis on collaborative discussions flexible seating arrangements and easy use of technology The Year Four students have been busy this week becoming accustomed to the new classroom design and engaging in learning experiences that require them to think critically about how to make best use of the furniture

In Year Five and Year Six the excitement has been just as palpable for the start of the year These senior members of the Junior School are now in a position where they act as role models and leaders for the College and our teachers have been busy preparing them for the expectations and responsibilities of the year ahead In many classes teachers have been talking to students about their character strengths ndash identifiable traits that define who they are as individuals Through the VIA Institute on Character (httpswwwviacharacterorgwww) students are in the process of completing a survey that helps them to identify their top strengths and develop an understanding of how to use their strengths in school and their personal life We encourage you to join in these conversations with your child Helping them to develop an understanding of their strengths will benefit them

It has been a great start to the year in Years 4-6 and we look forward to making and sharing more memories with the AB Paterson College community as the year progresses

The start of any new school year is an exciting time If you cast your own mind back to your school days I am sure many of you will have fond memories of your first week back after the summer vacation Seeing friends again the anticipation of a new classroom meeting a new teacher and unpacking a fresh set of books and stationery are recollections that can genuinely last a lifetime

I am confident that the first week back for students in Years 4-6 has been one that has created lasting happy memories Year Four students have had the pleasure of moving into their newly renovated classrooms If you have not had the opportunity to look inside these classrooms yet I certainly encourage you to do so You will see classrooms designed and fitted to facilitate 21st Century learning with an emphasis on collaborative discussions flexible seating arrangements and easy use of technology The Year Four students have been busy this week becoming accustomed to the new classroom design and engaging in learning experiences that require them to think critically about how to make best use of the furniture

I think the first day of school is the best day of the school year New uniforms big smiles and bubbling enthusiasm are always in equal measure The start of the 2018 school year did not disappoint It was fabulous to see the childrenrsquos beaming faces as they retold their holiday stories and reconnected with their friends

The teachers had been preparing their classrooms and were excitedly awaiting the arrival of their new students I would like to thank them for all they have done over the past weeks to ensure that the classrooms are warm engaging and inviting learning environments

We welcomed our new Prep children on Tuesday and Wednesday and both the children and parents were very brave as they set aside their tears and nervous excitement to embark upon their journey at AB Paterson College The teachers have been pleased with how the Prep children have settled into their new environment and look forward to a full week with their new classes next week

The Year 1 2 and 3 children were very excited to see the addition of a new playground in the May Gibbs Courtyard The Winton playground features some new and exciting play equipment with a few more surprises yet to come As you can imagine the playground has been very popular before school and during morning tea and lunch times Please note that the children can only access this playground with the supervision of a staff member during the allocated times

I wish everyone a very warm welcome to the 2018 academic year It has been an exciting and eventful start for our students in Years 10 ndash 12 The College Leaders were waiting in anticipation to welcome all new students to our community on Tuesday morning and there was a buzz around the Senior School as students recanted tales of their holidays and welcomed new members of the homeroom during tutor group orientation With lockers assigned and diaries distributed students were ready to tackle their first lesson of 2018

Activities Week is fast approaching and preparations are in full swing Final bag checks have been completed for the Year 10 Outward Bound camp and the launch of Ignite Ideas with Impact has sparked much intrigue and excitement for our Year 11 cohort Our Seniors have settled in to the Year 12 area with ease and have eagerly begun strategising for the year ahead in anticipation of their workshop Success Integrated The Leadership Challenge taking place next week

With such an eventful and inspiring start to the year 2018 promises to be one of the most rewarding and exciting yet at A B Paterson College and I wish you all a wonderful start to the year

Working in groups across Activities Week (29 January ndash 2 February) students will develop products and services that matter and that can create positive social and environmental change With the help of entrepreneurs industry leaders and social innovators students will develop world class scalable business ideas for the real world Ignite Ideas with Impact will culminate in a public trade display and shark-tank style pitch on Friday 2 February A celebratory atmosphere will greet visitors who will be invited into the school from 5pm Food trucks and live performances will accompany the student trade displays showcasing a week of innovation and discovery From 6pm student finalists will pitch their ideas to a panel of experts Groups will be judged on the quality of their ideas their marketing and presentation skills and the positive impact their product or service could have on the world The winning team will receive a substantial prize that could help them develop their idea in the real world

The Pacific School Games is an international school sport championship that has approximately 4000 school-aged students participating in 11 sports at the highest level

Sarah swam a PB in the 50m Breaststroke heats securing a place in the finals In the finals she placed 6th against some tough competition Sarah was also part of the Queensland 11 years old 200m Medley Relay Team which finished in 7th place

Ava swam a PB in the 100m Freestyle heats securing a place in the finals In the finals she produced another PB and finished 3rd Ava was also part of the Queensland 12 years old 200m Freestyle Relay Team which finished 3rd Ava collected two Bronze Medals at her first Pacific School Games

Rianna swam in the 100m Freestyle heats finishing just outside the top 10 ndash another great individual result considering the high level of competition

It was a fantastic experience for Sarah Ava Rianna and their families who also travelled to Adelaide to support them during the games

This is the highest level of competition for athletics in Australia and sees the best athletes from each state compete head to head and in a state versus state competition

Based on his performance at the State Championships in October Kaleb was selected to compete in the 14 year boys 100m hurdles

Kaleb just missed out on the final ndash placing 9th overall ndash but gained valuable experience while competing against the best athletes in the country
