Majors

“Aloha, and welcome to Hawai‘i Pacific University. Located at the center of

the booming Pacific region, we are a vibrant, diverse community of learners from around the world. From nationally ranked programs within the liberal arts and in professional fields, to our stunning campuses and student-centered classrooms, to extraordinary opportunities and connections that extend from America to Australia, China, and Japan, few universities offer you a more unique combination of career and lifestyle benefits than we do or prepare you better for global futures. But come see for yourself. This is as special a university as Hawai‘i is a special place.”

Dr. Geoffrey BannisterPresident Hawai‘i Pacific University

There are some students who dream bigger than others. They are the kind of students who know that tomorrow belongs to those who can adapt, succeed, and lead in a

complex, increasingly interconnected world. And when it comes to college, they’re looking for an education

that’s miles away from ordinary. A small, nationally ranked private university located at a

global crossroads of business and culture. A place like no other… where East meets West to create an

international mix of world-class faculty, diverse and inspiring friendships, and

global perspectives. An experience that’s as much about beautiful

beaches as it is about boundless opportunity to expand their

minds and enrich their lives.

There are some students who believe college should be

both the adventure of a lifetime as well as a lifelong foundation

for the global futures and careers they dream about.

These are the kind of students you’ll meet at Hawai‘i Pacific University.

As an HPU student, you’ll enjoy a higher-education experience that is rigorous, relevant, and personalized. You’ll study with superb faculty: Leaders in their fields who are skilled at research, but who are recognized—personally and professionally—for their excellent teaching. Choose from more than 60 acclaimed undergraduate and graduate degree programs that prepare you to live and work in a globalized world. Learn in first-class multimedia classrooms and labs. Take advantage of two very different campus settings. And spend your free time enjoying the paradise that surrounds you on all sides.

An affordable, private university

HPU’s tuition costs are nearly half of the national average for a private college. Beyond our affordable tuition, HPU boasts an average time to graduate of four years—much less than the national average. We may also make your education even more affordable through financial aid packages that include scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study opportunities.

▪ Bloomberg Businessweek endorses HPU as the “Best Undergraduate Return on Investment” of any college or university in the state of Hawai‘i.

▪ U.S. News & World Report ranks HPU among “America’s Best Colleges” and highlights our diversity in its “Most International Students” category.

▪ The Princeton Review recognizes HPU as one of the top 121 colleges in the western region.

▪ Barron’s recommends HPU as a “Best Buy in College Education” among 3,900 U.S. universities.

“At other places, an undergraduate student

could get into a laboratory, but only to assist

graduate students. Here, undergraduate students

do forefront research, which is a pretty unique

opportunity. We always involve undergraduate

students in our own research and mentor them

closely at every stage. And that experience

pays off. We turn out excellent graduates who

are regularly admitted to some of the nation’s

most prestigious institutions, including veterinary

and medical schools.”

Leaders in teaching and the real world

You’re looking to learn from the best. Our distinguished scholars and experienced professionals will not only challenge you intellectually, but also connect you to a whole new world of academic and professional opportunities. Join them in cutting-edge research and groundbreaking projects. Benefit from their experience as business owners, Fortune 500 executives, political advisors, acclaimed artists, and respected managers.

Imagine, for example, improving your professional presentation and communication skills with Dr. Malia Smith—journalist, communications and political consultant, and former chief of staff for a Hawai‘i State Senator—who offers you all the benefits of her practical experience, professional knowledge, and extensive connections throughout Hawai‘i media and government. Or collaborating on a research project with Dr. Jerome Agrusa, recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Senior Specialist Award as well as the HPU Trustees’ Teaching Excellence Award—a travel industry management expert regularly cited by the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and ESPN News, among others.

Extraordinary mentoringLifelong learning begins with personal attention

Big dreams require extraordinary mentors to help them come true. Those are the kind of mentors you’ll discover at HPU. You won’t find any teaching assistants in your classrooms here. Instead, you’ll work one-on-one with world-renowned scholars who are as passionate about mentoring you as they are about their own research. These professors will not only help you acquire the knowledge, communication skills, and problem-solving and reasoning ability you need to succeed in a global economy, they will also point you to the specific fieldwork, internship, and service opportunities you need to test your ideas out in the real world.

Thanks to a 15:1 student-faculty ratio and an average class size of 25, mentoring student-faculty relationships develop easily and naturally at HPU. But that’s not all. From day one, you will work closely with an academic advisor dedicated to helping you create a detailed, customized academic plan, determining the major that best fits your future goals, and tracking your progress toward graduation. It’s just part of what we offer as one of the most student-centered universities around—a deeply personalized education designed to bring your learning to life, to expand your mind, as well as help you develop the skills you need to launch the successful global career you dream about.

Renowned scholars, inspiring mentors HPU students have the opportunity to work closely with their faculty mentors on such cutting-edge research projects as:

▪ Studying the impact of invasive snowflake coral growths on precious black corals

▪ Comparing MMPI-2 validity scales among compensation-seeking Caucasian and Asian American medical patients

▪ Measuring ocean acidification in marine reserves to determine the impact of global warming

▪ Discovering biologically active secondary metabolites from marine organisms

▪ Integrating sustainability and Hawaiian culture into the tourism experience of the Hawaiian Islands

▪ Testing the antioxidant levels of grape tomatoes that are cultivated in various aquaponics water and seawater mixtures

▪ Surveying Honolulu Marathon participants, leading to important information—quoted in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and by the Associated Press and ESPN—about the marathon’s impact on the economy in Hawai‘i

Anthropology major Nicole Lemas has a difficult time choosing her favorite professor. She admires Dr. Lynette Hi’ilani Cruz for her strong presence and subtle approach. “She allows information to marinate in our minds.” Another favorite: Dr. Topher Erickson. “He’s very direct and hands-on.” She’s grateful for the unbelievable experiences her professors have put in her path, like field trips to the sacred Royal Birthing Stones in Central O’ahu and to a Hawaiian temple called a “heiau.” Says Nicole: “No other university can compare with the opportunities presented to us.”

“My passion for anthropology comes from my professors.

They have ignited a fire in me to continue my lifelong

journey as a student. Because it’s cross-cultural and in

the Pacific Rim, HPU has been a dynamic place for me

to be studying.”

Nicole LemasAnthropology ’11Boise, Idaho

“From what’s talked about at faculty meetings, to staff

support, to every decision we make about resources, our

focus really is on mentoring our students. We engage

students with the topic and the process, and that aligns

perfectly with my research, for example, into how

companies have opened their doors to customers when

developing new products and how virtual worlds like

Second Life facilitate co-creation. Between my experience

with real companies and my students’ skill with social

media, we are helping shift the field of marketing to be

more consumer-driven. We even hold class virtually

sometimes, where we’re all avatars. We’ve had a visiting

lecturer/avatar from Austria. We have class blogs,

podcasts, and videos. Our classes themselves often become

an experiment in interaction and creativity.”

Dr. Thomas KohlerAssistant Professor of Marketing

What does it really mean to belong to an international community of bright minds from across the globe? It means you get to graduate from HPU as a true global citizen with the complete set of intellectual, professional, cultural, and personal skills you require to adapt, succeed, and lead within communities and organizations anywhere in the world.

You can expect multiculturalism to permeate every facet of your learning and life here. Heading to class? Expect to meet up with classmates from Paris, New York City, Beijing, Amsterdam, Cape Town, Sidney, or Tokyo. Heading to the lab? Your lab partners are as likely to be from Nepal as they are from Norway. Step out onto Fort Street Mall into conversations taking place in a dozen different languages all around you. Hungry? You’ll find restaurants on the mall offering everything from local Hawaiian food, to Indian, Mediterranean, Thai, Chinese, and countless other global cuisines, all within a block or two. Heading back to your residence hall or the student center? Your roommates and friends may be from Hawai‘i or the U.S. mainland, from Europe or the Far East.

In class you will learn from professors who come here from business and commercial centers around the globe. It’s the kind of transformational education and college experience that goes far beyond merely absorbing facts, to real experiences and firsthand perspectives that open you up to new dreams…and whole new worlds of possibilities.

diverse international communityLearn with students from across the globe

The College Finder ranks HPU as

having one of the most diverse student

populations in the United States.

From Africa to HPU to HarvardSammy Leseita grew up in a nomadic tribe in Northern Kenya. He was unschooled until he left home for boarding school at 13. After graduating from high school, he returned to his family’s nomadic life; yet he was burning with the desire to further his education. Fortunately for Sammy, two visitors from Hawai‘i helped him enroll in HPU. Once here, Sammy threw himself into his schoolwork, focusing on biology, studying whales and dolphins, working at the Oceanic Institute, and making “friends with students from 60 to 70 countries,” he says.

Sammy is now at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, working to earn a master’s degree in international educational policy. “One of the major things I learned at HPU is how different cultures are integrated and living amicably. I’m hoping that, one day, I will go back to Kenya and join the government. Politics is very tribal in Kenya. But I want to be the kind of leader who can bring all the cultures together, like I see in Hawai‘i, where so many communities live together as one people.”

“HPU is a truly international university. It’s a

perfect fit for students in search of an education

that is global, relevant, and competitive. It’s a global

community where you can share, learn, and enjoy

international experiences everywhere, inside the

classroom and outside, and at every stage of your

journey here. When it comes to choosing the right

university, I could not have made a better choice.”

“Honolulu is an ideal location to learn about

international marketing as well as hospitality

and tourism. With tourists from all over the

world coming year-round, every day is a

Thanks to his career counselor, who helped him both with his résumé and interview preparation, marketing major Matt Robertson recently landed an internship in Waikiki with Starwood Hotels through an event sponsored by HPU’s Career Services Center. The prestigious, global hotel chain that owns and operates numerous high-end properties across Hawai‘i offered him the invaluable opportunity to gain real-world work experience within three different departments: Food and beverage marketing, catering and convention services, and public relations. “For me, working on group projects with such diverse teams only reinforced the importance of the global education I’ve received at HPU,” says Matt. “I feel truly prepared to succeed in today’s global business environment.”

“The HPU Career Services staff has been extremely influential in the business community and helpful to our

company. We enjoy participating in their company visits, career fairs, and on-campus interviews. We’re always

impressed by the high quality of students we get from HPU and we continue to recruit from their campus.”

a network for successConnections to your future

HPU’s success is recognized through the success of our alumni—more than 30,000 men and women who have benefited from an HPU education. Global citizens who are civic and business leaders. People who have learned to adapt to the rapid changes in contemporary life.

Despite living all over the world, this close-knit network of graduates is connected to HPU and committed to helping its future graduates (like you!) succeed. Even before you graduate, you’ll discover you have “family,” friends, and business associates all over the world, ready and willing to connect you to your future.

Jason Kim was especially attracted to

HPU because of its Entrepreneurial

Studies program. Jason took what he

learned from his classes and put it to

work in the real world as the co-owner

of three restaurants in Honolulu. His

advice for students who want to start

their own business? Find a mentor, join

a business or entrepreneurial club, and

have passion and drive. “People have

ideas all day long, but you have to take

action,” Jason says. “If you fail, then try

again.” While studying at HPU, Jason

became interested in business through

SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise), one

of the University’s 50 student clubs and

organizations, and became involved in

international debate.

financial services industry for New York Life. However, a few years later, I decided to leave

the financial industry and pursue a career that I am more passionate about. I am now a

from professors who had decades of real-world experience in various industries. They were

always more than willing to give me advice, both as a student and now as a graduate.

The quality of education I received at Hawai‘i Pacific University, both in and out of the

a unique, global laboratory Explore the advantages of the Pacific Rim

It takes a unique setting for big dreams to transform into big achievements. And as an HPU student, you will live, learn, and play in an environment like no other. One of America’s most exciting, diverse, and safe cities, Honolulu is home to stunning beaches, an enviable quality of life, as well as to Fortune 500 companies. Further, as a city located at a global and cultural crossroads, it serves as a gateway to the Pacific Rim with all the internship possibilities, career opportunities, and professional connections offered by one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

In search of uncommon learning experiences? Explore how tourism shapes an economy…or how multiple cultures co-exist in perfect harmony. Learn about everything from volcanoes and reefs, to ocean currents, trade winds, dolphins, and sharks, and more. Experience the Pacific Ocean as your very own learning laboratory.

Ready to kick back and relax? Hang out with friends from across the globe over a game of beach volleyball. Hike Diamond Head, surf the North Shore, go whale watching, learn to snorkel at Hanauma Bay, visit the many art galleries, shop at the International Marketplace, or volunteer in the community. Regardless of the kind of person you are and where you come from, there’s no end to the magical experiences and memories that await you here.

Being the change in the worldAs a part-time employee at HPU’s affiliate, the Oceanic Institute (OI), student Gwen Wedow has high hopes for the work she and others are doing. Her undergraduate thesis project involves culturing phytoplankton, the first link in the marine food chain. Through photosynthesis, phytoplankton produce most of the world’s oxygen. “If we can learn to use aquaculture the way we use agriculture, we can feed the world, take the stress off the natural environment, and stop depleting the ocean’s fisheries,” Gwen says. While the challenges are significant, she says, “I have a burning feeling inside me that we’re going to make it happen.”

“I’m incredibly passionate about my

studies in marine biology, and I’m also

an avid surfer. Here at HPU, I can

combine both. It’s amazing. Just being

out on the water is a benefit for me.

Beyond that, there’s a strong sense of

community and family here. You really

get to know people on a level that’s

different than on the mainland.”

A favorite professor of HPU students is Dr. Carlos Juarez, chair of the Department of International Studies and professor of political science, who has lectured throughout Europe, Mexico, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. He served on the staff of former U.S. Senator Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) and was a consultant to the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C., the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, and the Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance in Stockholm, Sweden. He serves on the Consular Corps of Hawai‘i as the Honorary Consul of Peru to Hawai‘i. Dr. Juarez works closely with students, mentoring them as they plan both their education and their careers.

“I am now a morning news anchor for

one of the top TV stations in Hawai‘i.

From the tools to fulfill my career goals, to

internships, to a variety of extracurricular

opportunities, Hawai‘i Pacific University

prepared me well for this fast-paced,

research-oriented, innovative career that

I love. It was as part of my HPU practicum

requirements that I interned with a local

news station, an experience that helped me

find my calling as a journalist.”

Two campuses, one universityExcitement of the city; serenity of a mountain setting

The downtown campusLocated in downtown Honolulu, at the business and financial heart of the Pacific, our urban campus surrounds you with all the excitement and opportunities of a thriving, metropolitan setting. Home to most of our business, liberal arts, and general education programs, it features state-of-the-art multimedia classrooms and laboratories set amidst the gleaming glass, steel, brick, and palm trees of Hawai‘i’s capital city. It’s the kind of setting where your classroom conversations with professors may often continue over cups of coffee on Fort Street or transform into an internship at the headquarters of an international business. Many HPU students also choose to take advantage of off-campus housing to live in the downtown area, within easy distance of Chinatown, the Ala Moana Shopping Center, cuisine choices from around the world, and Waikiki Beach.

The Hawai‘i Loa campusJust a free, 15-minute shuttle ride away, you’ll find the Hawai‘i Loa residential campus, nestled at the base of the beautiful Ko’olau Mountains. Here, you will learn from world-class professors and use the latest equipment to study biology, nursing, marine and environmental science, pre-med, and other sciences. Live and learn in a setting of exquisite tropical beauty—yet, you’ll never be out of touch, unless you want to; wireless access is at your fingertips throughout the campus. A natural

outdoor laboratory of mountains and ocean surrounds you—a perfect setting for scientific study and discovery in geology, botany, anthropology, marine biology, and so much more. Take field trips around the island. Sail on HPU’s own research vessel as early as your freshman year. Enjoy easy access to hiking, rock climbing, surfing, parasailing, and other forms of outdoor exercise. The choices are endless, and so are the possibilities.

A sense of communityWhile living in one of our six residence halls on the Hawai‘i Loa campus, you will definitely feel a strong sense of community and “family.” Each hall houses about 35 students who live in suite-style, double- and triple-occupancy rooms. When you need a break from your studies, you can get involved in a variety of fun events sponsored by our active Residents Activities Council (RAC), or take the free shuttle to the beach, shopping, or to enjoy other off-campus cultural and recreational excursions.

“I love waking up every day and being greeted by the

mountains and the beautiful scenery. I am so fortunate

to live and learn in such an amazing place.”

A vibrant, safe, communityHPU’s Hawai‘i Loa campus has 24-hour security. Our main campus is located in Honolulu, one of the safest — and most exciting — cities in the U.S.

An easy, eight-mile ride in the HPU van is all it takes to get from the excitement of the downtown campus to the lush mountain serenity of our Hawai‘i Loa campus.

Why Honolulu? ▪ Businessweek.com states it is the third

best city in America for its overall quality of life

▪ Recently ranked as the third safest large city in America by Forbes magazine

▪ It’s ranked No. 3 on the list of top 10 cities in America where residents feel the happiest and the healthiest in the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, according to USA Today

▪ Consistently ranks among the cleanest, safest, healthiest, and most ethnically diverse cities in America

Vibrant student lifeOpportunities for leadership and fun

Getting involved in a registered student organization (RSO) is an easy way to make friends from all over the world, enhance your leadership skills, or just have fun. At HPU, you can choose from 50 different academic and professional, cultural and spiritual, or special interest RSOs. Can’t find what you’re looking for? Start your own group. If you’re looking to gain even more leadership experience, consider getting involved in the HPU Student Government Association.

Or participate in an activity organized by the Center for Student Life & First-Year Programs, such as the scavenger hunt in downtown Honolulu; Da Freakshow, HPU’s annual talent show; Halloween FunFest, which features a performance by the HPU national champion cheer and dance teams; “HPU Idol”; and more. Of course, there are loads of spontaneous activities, too, like playing volleyball on the beach, attending Sea Warrior games, laughing with friends in your residence hall, or playing music on an open-mic night.

Gathering placeOur Sea Warrior Center, located on the downtown campus, offers a great place to connect with friends to study; to play pool, ping-pong, or foosball; or to enjoy your favorite show on a big-screen television. The center also hosts a variety of events, like “HPU Idol.”

HPU’s student newspaper, Kalamalama, provides HPU students with an opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to a professional newspaper.

Becoming part of the HPU family2010 HPU Student Body President Saige Martin is grateful that he stepped out of his comfort zone and applied to HPU. Saige was enticed not only by HPU’s stunning location, but also by the many opportunities it offered, from high-quality academics to an outstanding choir so he could continue his lifelong love of singing, to a great scholarship, and internships. Connecting to his HPU “family” happened easily during orientation and has deepened through his participation in campus organizations. “Being involved outside of the classroom,” he says, “has enriched my education in class.”

“HPU offers an international learning community in

every sense. We’re an ‘ohana—a family. We have athletics

programs, music programs, academic programs, and within

all of them, you’ll find yourself. What’s great about HPU is

you have options to experience new things.”

HPU Student Body President Saige Martin connects with his HPU family.

“I originally discovered HPU while

working for a local golf magazine in

Germany when my supervisor brought

me an article published in a local

newspaper. I’m so glad I chose to apply.

It’s been an interesting, challenging

experience that has stretched my abilities

and taught me something new every

day. I currently work for the University

newspaper and, from my creative writing

ability to my research skills, it’s yet

another way HPU is preparing me to

achieve my fullest potential.”

sea Warrior powerOur student-athletes know how to win

If you love to compete—or to cheer on winners—you’ll love HPU. Our student-athletes come from all over the U.S. and the world, bringing to HPU a commitment and desire to succeed, in their sport and in the classroom. Our NCAA Division II Sea Warriors compete in the Pacific West Conference. Over the years, our teams have

captured conference and national titles, including the 2010 NCAA Division II Softball College World Series title. HPU also received the 2010 Pacific West Conference Commissioner’s Cup, which ranks the top athletics program in the conference based on the finishes of each team in its respective sport.

Something to cheer aboutHPU’s cheer and dance teams brought home national titles at the 2010 National Cheerleaders Association and National Dance Alliance championships. The HPU large co-ed cheer team won its eighth straight title. The dance team won its fifth consecutive championship, totaling six titles overall. HPU cheerleaders also played a vital role in the success of the Team USA all-girl cheer team, which took the first-place world title at the 2010 International Cheer Union world championships.

“I saw HPU’s dance team compete at

nationals when I was in high school.

I fell in love with the team and

knew I wanted to be a part of it.

I came to HPU right out of high school.

My experience has been life-changing.”

There are many ways to measure the value of a great college education. Between the excellence of the programs we offer, our emphasis on ensuring students graduate in four years (or in three, if they enroll in summer courses or a concurrent degree program), and the extraordinary careers our graduates shape for themselves, HPU is an excellent investment in your future. Our highly competitive tuition costs and the variety of scholarships we award reflect our long-standing commitment to making a high-quality, private college education more affordable for more families. We enjoy a nationwide reputation for the value we provide. It’s why we’re recognized by Bloomberg Businessweek as offering the “Best Return on Investment” of all undergraduate degrees in Hawai’i, and why Barron’s regularly recommends us as a “Best Buy in College Education” among 3,900 colleges and universities in America.

From world-class faculty to truly international learning experiences, from global career opportunities to a network of friends and colleagues from across the world, an HPU education offers advantages few other universities can.

But that’s not all. Not only do HPU students graduate with less debt; they also are more likely to end up with higher salaries, according to the “Best Western U.S. Colleges by Salary Potential” report from PayScale College Salary Report.

“I looked at schools on the

mainland and in Hawai‘i.

HPU gave me a good balance

of what I was looking for. It was

important to me to be able to

get to know my professors. At

HPU, I can focus on completing

my degree and not worry about

getting into classes.”

Rachel SamsonNursing ’13Pearl City, Hawai‘i

Almost every undergraduate degree at HPU can be completed in four years or less, and thanks to the Four-Year Plan we help our students create, the majority of them do graduate within four years.

Can’t make it to campus? Our HPU admissions counselors travel all over the U.S. and the world to meet with prospective students. Visit www.hpu.edu/hpuusa or www.hpu.edu/country to see if a representative may be visiting in or near your area.

Admissions requirementsHow do we evaluate your application to HPU? We try to understand who you really are both as a student and as a person so we may determine if HPU is the right fit for you, and vice versa. Instead of merely using a formula comprised of your GPA, class rank, and SAT I or ACT score, we adopt a more holistic approach that reviews the strength of your class schedule, your extracurricular activities, the personal statement you provide, as well as your academic area of interest. All of these factors weigh into the admissions decisions we make. Our priority deadline for fall semester is March 1; however, applications are reviewed on a rolling basis year-round. Once your application is complete it usually takes two weeks for an admissions decision, depending upon the time of year. If you have questions regarding your admissions decision, please contact us at the admissions office today.

Application:1. Complete the application for admission in its entirety

at www.hpu.edu/apply

2. Submit your official high school transcript.

3. SAT I or ACT scores are required for U.S. students applying directly from high school. If these scores are not posted on your transcript, please contact the appropriate testing office to have your scores sent directly to HPU.

4. The personal statement is your opportunity to let the admissions committee know more about yourself. You may submit writing samples, or even a personal essay or poetry. It is up to you on how you wish to express yourself. There is no set length required.

5. Letters of recommendation may be submitted but are not required for all applicants. You will be notified if letters of recommendation are required to complete your application.
