Scholarship CommitteeHi parents and grandparents! I would like to discuss Life Insurance that theIOV provides. As you know, in order to receive a Grand Lodge Scholarship, your children/grandchildren must be junior/senior members. The MINIMUM

insurance a child from birth to 16 years is $1,500.Following are examples of what it would cost for ONE year of premiums:

1 year = $1.16/month - $13.92/year5 years = $1.24/month - $14.88/year

15 years = $1.52/month - $18.24/yearA scale of all ages is available from your Financial Secretary. These premiums REMAIN THESAME FOR LIFE. Naturally, greater amounts of insurance are available. I hope you will considerthis article and inquire about obtaining this reasonable life insurance for your children. Insurancepolicies may be gotten up to $10,000. REMEMBER the Grand Lodge is awarding $1,000SCHOLARSHIPS for 2008! Have your child/grandchild eligible in the future to receive ascholarship.

Thank you for reading this article.Juanita “Toots” Porter, Scholarship Committee

BURN CAMP COMMITTEE

The Committee is pleased with our progress. The Illinois Burn Camp received a donationthis year of $7,000.00. In the East we are planning our fund-raiser on March 29, 2008. It will be a dinner withraffles, silent auction and dancing. In July we were able to give a donation of $9,000.00 to theArthur C. Luf Burn Camp in Connecticut.

Viking of the Year

Have you a Viking member at your Lodge you can alwaysdepend on? One that help with parties, or, helps picking uparound the club or helps out with bartending, bingo, or anythingelse at the Lodge? Maybe, even helps out other members forwhatever reason? Or perhaps the one that always greets you witha smile or is introducing you to a new member or someone thatthey don’t think you have met?

Perhaps they are officers, have been officers, trustees? These are the types, /kinds of people that would be the VOTY! Look around, you know

who they are!VOTY applications will be out in the fall of 2008, but it is never too late to be looking

around your Lodge and you don’t want to NOT nominate that very deserving person!

MEMBERSHIP/PROMOTIONAL/CULTUREWe are now starting another two years. So, for this journal, I would like to write about Membership. What is

MEMBERSHIP? Webster’s definition is: any persons composing a group or organization. VIKING definition: aperson is a member of a Scandinavian group to perpetuate the customs and mores of Scandinavian Culture.

This VIKING MEMBERSHIP is one that must be done by each and EVERYONE OF US. In order tocontinue “perpetuating our customs and mores,” we all have this responsibility.

How will we accomplish this you ask? Those suggestions will come in another journal.

CAN YOU IDENTIFY?

Leslie A. Ingelson, Moline, Illinois pocketed $10.00 for correctly identifying Princess Lovisa ofSweden born 1951 as the subject of last issue’s photo.

Queen Louise of Denmark (October 31, 1851 — March 20, 1926) was a princess of Sweden and the Queen consortof Frederik VIII of Denmark. Louise Josephine Eugenie of the House of Bernadotte was born Princess Lovisa of Swedenin Stockholm. She was the only daughter of King Charles XV (1826-1872) and Queen Lovisa of Sweden (1828-1871).Louise married Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark (1843-1912) in Stockholm on July 28, 1869. The wedding was

celebrated with great pomp and splendor at a time when Sweden was plagued by its last severe starvation epidemic, but the dowry of the Princesswas all made by native hands. In Denmark Louise became quite popular during her long time as Crown Princess withher cheerful personality. As the years passed by, however, her personality changed; she became more reserved and firm, her husband’s infidelity caused a greater interest in religion, and she raised her children very strict, much unlike her ownfree upbringing. Her only pleasure was her visits to her old home-country Sweden, where she visited her old family andfriends, and she therefore became much saddened when the political situation of 1905, when Norway became independentfrom Sweden with Danish support, made it impossible to visit Sweden. She eventually became Queen of Denmark in1906 as Frederik’s consort. The couple had 8 children, four sons and four daughters.

THOR LODGE NO. 9Moline, Illinois

Greetings from Moline,August 11th our lodge hosted and co-sponsored the“Viking Fest” here on our grounds. The Moline FireDepartment, Moline High School Class of ‘59Scholarship Fund and Vintage Car Club were theother sponsors of the event. Hundreds braved thevery hot, humid weather but had a great timenevertheless. Several photos of the day are included.

The Vintage Car Club featured about twenty-five vintage autos, all restored/customized to betterthan new condition. The variety of makes and modelsbrought back many memories from the more matureattendees as well as “oos and aahs” from the youngerset.

The Class of ‘59 from Moline High Schoolroasted a hog on site and attendees were served agenerous pork sandwich, baked beans, slaw and thebest corn on the cob I had all season.

Everyone enjoyed listening to the music of “The Gray WolfBand” playing popular hit tunes from the fifties through those oftoday. This group has a unique knack of picking up on the soundand style of the original artists of each piece they played. This was myintroduction to this terrific band, which I soon learned is a favorite atmany area nightspots.

Moline Fire Department personnel were on hand to showcasesome of their fire equipment and answer any questions presented.

Proceeds of this event will support a camp for burn victims fromthe mid-west, operated by the Illinois Fire Fighters Alliance; ascholarship fund, and a Black Hawk College Scholarship Fund bythe Car Club and the Vikings.

Now that cool, crisp fall temperatures are present, wewill be looking toward the festive holiday season ahead.

May I take this opportunity to wish all of you and yours a very Merry Christmas and aprosperous, healthy and Happy New Year.

snow blower because winter is just about here. Oh well were all Vikingsso we should be able to handle a little cold and snow. Right?

In September we had our annual pork and corn feed. Everythingwas real good. November 4, was our annual fall Swedish PancakeBreakfast. I cannot give an update on this because this article was writtenbefore the breakfast. December 5, is our election of officers. Friday,December 14th, is the date for our annual Christmas party. 6:00 pmcocktails with a short meeting to follow and then we have that deliciouslutefisk. Remember you must be present to be eligible for the two $50.00prizes given away that night.

Starting with the December 4th meeting we will be starting allmeetings at 7:00pm.

October 5th and 6th, Dee and I attended the Council meetingand sock hop at Tinley Park. What a great time we had. Our councilmeeting was very informative. Britt Hitchue from Linne Lodge inMuskegon gave a report on the upcoming convention to be held thereon June 17-20, 2009. Mark these dates down now so we can see if wecan get a contingent to sail across the big pond for Muskegon. Thecommittee that worked on the sock hop did one fantastic job. The hallwas decorated just beautiful as well as the girls on roller skates. Thanksagain.

Here’s wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a BlessedNew Year.

Seventeen dedicated Viking members of the Jamestown Diana andIngjald Lodges put their belief of supporting a clean environment intoaction when they gathered at the Viking Lake Park in Maple Springs toconduct their annual fall highway pick-up program. This was the fifteenthyear that the Vikings participated in this worthwhile environmental projectencompassing eight miles of highway and is conducted both in thespring and in the fall. The Viking highway adoption communityimprovement project was originally the idea of Past Viking Chief KeithSpaulding in 1992. Chairperson for this year’s project was Betsy Lynch, who was assisted by Toots Porter and the community minded group ofViking volunteers. Refreshments were served to all volunteers followingthe highway beautification project.
