FROM THE PRESIDENT

Exempla Lutheran: A Partner in Your CommunityWhile the day to day world of our nurses, physicians, and other health care workers involves caring for patients, we also are very fortunate to meet members of our community that also want to ease the burdens of sickness and injury on citizens within our community.

Recently, Exempla Lutheran had the honor of receiving some delightful gifts from our next generation – first was a young duo from Fairmount Elementary School in Golden. Elise Miller, age 12, and Katie McCormick, age 11, organized a fundraiser at their school and raised $740 for the Exempla Comprehensive Cancer Center at Lutheran.

Then in February, Girl Scout troops from Arvada came to the hospital and made over 450 personalized Valentine’s Day cards that went up to patient rooms on their food trays throughout the facility wishing them a speedy “Get Well and You are Remembered” message.

Exempla Lutheran is a special place and we are so touched by the giving spirit of our community – thank you for being a part of our world, we are honored to be a part of yours!

Best Regards,

Heart disease, including heart attack and stroke, affect people of all ages, genders, races, and ethnicities.

With more than 2 million heart attacks and strokes happening every year in the United States, it’s important to know the risks.“Heart disease and stroke are an epidemic in the United States today,” states Christina Johnson, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Exempla Lutheran Medical Center. “The good news is that many of the major risk factors for these conditions can be prevented and controlled.”Some of the best steps you can take to reduce your risk include: n Talk to Your Doctor - share your health

history, get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked, and ask if taking an aspirin each day is right for you.

n Control Your Blood Pressure and Cholesterol - if your blood pressure or cholesterol is high, take steps to lower it.

n Eat Healthy for Your Heart - when planning your meals and snacks, try to:

• Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. • Check the labels on your food and

select those with the lowest sodium. Too much sodium can increase your blood pressure.

• Limit foods with high amounts of saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol. You can find this information on the Nutrition Facts label.

• Cook at home whenever possible. This way, you’re in charge of the ingredients and you know exactly what you and your family are eating.

n Get Moving – obesity can increase your risk for heart disease and stroke. Make physical activity part of your daily routine. Try to fit in 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise on most days of the week.

n Quit Smoking – cigarette smoking greatly increases your risk for heart disease. If you’re a smoker, quit as soon as possible, and if you don’t smoke, don’t start. You can also support smoke-free policies in your community and try to avoid secondhand smoke.

If you are interested in learning more about how to take proactive efforts in preventing heart disease, visit millionhearts.hhs.gov and take the pledge. Million Hearts is a national initiative to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes over the next five years.

When hearing the word “hospitalist” many people probably have no idea what someone with that title

would do. They might even believe that it is a made up word, not even real. In fact, the people who undertake this role are well educated, extensively trained and highly skilled physicians. These physicians specialize in either internal medicine or family medicine and work solely in the treatment of people while they are hospitalized. Let’s meet Dr. Dora Hilty, a Hospitalist – Board Certified in Internal Medicine, who is co-chief for Sound Inpatient Medicine and their services provided at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center. (A Hospitalist is also known as an Inpatient Physician.)Tell me about yourself – professionally: I am a working Hospitalist. My undergraduate degree is in Engineering from Trinity University. I went to medical school at the University of Texas in Galveston, TX and completed my Residency at Baylor. I have been a Hospitalist treating patients in hospital settings since 1999.Why did you choose to specialize in Internal Medicine and Inpatient care? I liked all aspects of medicine and prefer to care for the whole patient treating acute illnesses. A hospital setting brings all of these attributes together into one role. When a patient is being treated at Exempla Lutheran for heart problems, how is the Hospitalist involved? That sometimes depends on the cause or reason for the hospitalization. A Hospitalist is like the quarterback of care during a person’s stay in the hospital. Let’s say the patient was admitted for heart issues. We act as liaisons between the patients, family members, nurses, Cardiologist and the patient’s primary care

physician. All of us work together to ensure we provide high quality care during a patient’s time in the hospital. What should patients, family members or caregivers know about working with inpatient physicians? We have a strong relationship with community physicians working with each patient’s primary care doctor, keeping him/her informed of a patient’s progress and sharing a complete report upon a patient’s discharge from the hospital. This will allow the patient’s primary care doctor to continue to care for the patient on an on-going basis.Think of this collaborative approach to medicine as similar to the approach used with Emergency Room visits. But, instead of serving the emergency issue, the Hospitalist cares for acute illnesses requiring overnight stays in the hospital. They work in teams, so that Hospitalists are available everyday around the clock at the hospital. The addition of Hospitalists to the patient care process allows physicians to care for people when and where they need care, without the need to split their time between office appointments and hospital care, or being called away from their office unexpectedly for a hospitalized patient emergency. When you are not working, how do you like to spend your time? I am a very active person. I will often help out at my 2 young children’s school, reading and doing projects with their classmates. I play soccer, enjoy

alpine skiing, like to hike, do yoga and cook. What besides medical journals do you like to read? I enjoy reading about wellness and approaches to better health, but also a variety of fiction from fantasy to historical fiction.Any good stories about being a doctor that you can share? For a while, my youngest son thought that I was a “stay-at-home” Mom, because I am often home when he is. And, when my older son was playing with a friend when he was three, I heard him exclaim – ‘You can’t be a doctor. You’re a boy and only girls can be doctors!’ Boy, how times have changed!

You never know when you will go from being the provider to being provided for. Yet, this is the exact experience of

Bernie Pomarico. Bernie has been a nurse for the in-patient oncology service team for 6 years. Currently, she is the patient – a survivor – the one relying on the great work of surgeons, medical oncologists, radiologists, nurses, lymphedema therapists, clinical trial specialists, genetic counselors and other caregivers. Even though she has a family history of cancer, she “did not expect a positive test result.” But, when the call came for her to schedule further diagnostic tests, it was delivered with a caring, reassuring voice and an assurance that she would receive all the information she needed to make the best decision for her.

At Lutheran, a cancer patient’s care pathway is fully supported by a Disease Site Team. This dedicated multidisciplinary team works with patients and families to create a comforting and healing environment which fosters their education, diagnosis, and disease treatment. Nurse navigators, physicians and support staff members all play a critical role in the patient’s progression from diagnosis through survivorship. If “two heads are better than one”, imagine the power of an entire team of top cancer doctors and nurses brainstorming ways to better treat your illness. That’s what happens every week when physicians and health professionals from the Exempla Comprehensive Cancer Center at Lutheran meet at the Tumor Board Conferences. Our program offers the

These weekly meetings allow our team to present and learn about individual anonymous cancer cases, current treatments, clinical trial availability, patient outcomes, case management strategies and other topics. Health professionals at Exempla Lutheran go beyond the illness to take into account the whole patient in ensuring the most appropriate treatment plan is undertaken.Bernie said she is “proud to be a part of this team and it is good to have medical experts she can trust.” All cancer patients at Exempla Lutheran can use our services with confidence knowing that our center is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer

Program. In addition, the Exempla Breast Care Center at Lutheran is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Cancer. CALL FOR HEART SCAN INFORMATION – 303-403-7871 n WWW.EXEMPLA.ORG/COMMUNITYCALENDAR

Heart disease is still the number one killer of both men and women. This is an appalling statistic,

because, when found early, heart disease can be treated and oftentimes reversed. The physicians at Exempla Rocky Mountain Cardiovascular Associates want to make more people aware of an important screening tool and its benefits. The cardiac calcium-score screening, or heart scan, is a non-invasive test used to detect calcium deposits in the coronary arteries.Coronary arteries are the vessels that supply oxygen containing blood to the heart muscle. Calcified plaque results when there is a build-up of cholesterol in the artery. Over time, the plaque build-up can narrow the arteries and restrict blood flow to the heart. The result may be chest pain, called

“angina” or a heart attack. One of the major benefits of a cardiac calcium screen is that it can help reveal heart disease in its early stages, possibly even years before symptoms emerge. Dr. Jerry Miklin, Interventional Cardiologist and Medical Director of Catheter Lab Services at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center shared a story of a patient who recently underwent a cardiac calcium score screening with beneficial results. “I had a patient who was totally asymptomatic of heart disease, worked out regularly, trim, healthy guy. He had a cardiac calcium screening that resulted in a high number. With further testing, we determined two of his three coronary arteries were totally blocked. I was able to place stents to re-open those arteries. The

calcium screening saved him from having a heart attack.”

How does a heart scan work? Cardiac calcium scoring uses computed tomography, or a CT scan, which combines special x-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to take a series of pictures of the arteries surrounding the heart. These detailed images are then examined by both a radiologist and cardiologist. Exempla Lutheran Medical Center has a state-of-the-art imaging system called a GE Volume Computed Tomography (VCT) 64-slice with ASiR™. The VCT system is more than twice as fast as a conventional multi-slice CT scan which makes imaging faster and easier for patients, in addition to excellent image quality. And, the VCT machine at Lutheran was installed with

ASiR™, a low dose technology utilized to decrease radiation exposure. According to Casey Carlson, Medical Imaging Director, it uses 40-60% lower doses of radiation as compared to other CT systems. “This allows for a very low radiation dose to the patient. I am proud to say our VCT has one of the lowest dose scanners in the marketplace.”

Who should consider getting the test? You should consider having a cardiac calcium screening if you have more than one of the following risk factors. n Family history of coronary disease,

particularly if family members developed the disease at a young age

n Diabetics n Smokers n Elevated cholesterol levels
