Personal responses:

The Thirteenth Pearl is a story about a young detective name Nancy who been askedto locate a stolen pearl necklace that is unusual and very valuable. She soon learnsthat strange and dangerous people are responsible for the theft. They harass her athome and intensify it when she and her father go to Japan, and they finally manageto kidnap Nancy and her friend Ned Nickerson when she returns to River Heights.Through clever sleuthing, Nancy is able to penetrate the rites of an amazing group of pearl worshipers, some of whose members are far from devout, and she uncoversunderhanded dealings of certain employees of World wide Gems, Inc. a tremendous

international jewelry company. The author knows how to attract reader to keep onreading the novel until the end. Each chapter have it owns surprise and thrill. Theopening of the novel is simple and not dragging. It gives the reader an idea why thetitle of the novel is ‘The Thirteenth Pearl’. The author added Japanese cultural in thisnovel. This makes the novel much more interesting to read. The best part is whenNancy and her father go to Japan. In Japan, Nancy had to overcome all theobstacles and blackmail notes. Even all the struggles and mysteries, the author stillmanage to add in some Japanese words presentos, tamairesan, shi and ku. Also, theauthor describes the Japanese wedding ceremony, Japanese art and old customvery detail and it shows that the author did her research about Japan.

Justification: I choose this novel because I love to read mystery story. Further more the novel titleattracts me because I love the number thirteen and this make me really curious wantto know what the story is about and the connection between the number thirteen.After reading the novel, I found out that the author try to introduce Japanese customto reader. From the novel I have learn a bit about Japanese culture. In fact, she havechoose a lot of background scene from River Heights in United State to Tokyo inJapan.

Personal responses:

This poem perfectly illustrates the power of nostalgia and the deep impressions of childhood. From the poem we can see the poet is still touched by memories of hisyouth and can never quite break free of the mysterious spell they cast on his inner self. This poem also brings to focus the beauty of music and its hold over our emotions. We must forever cherish the happiness of our childhood for it is free of consciousness and pretence. The kind of joy we experience as children claims aspecial place in our experiences. It lives on as a memory, constantly reminding us of the bliss of innocence. Mother is the name for God in the lips and hearts of littlechildren. We all have our time machines. Some take us back, they’re calledmemories. Some take us forward, they’re called dreams. We do not remember days,

we remember moments. The richness of life lies in memories we have forgotten.

Justification:

I choose this poem because the title attracts me. I play piano, so I think the title suitme. In fact, the poem has some music element in it. I can imagine myself as thepersona while I’m reading the poem. It reminds me of my childhood and my mother.

Personal responses:

This story is about a girl name June and she being bully by other June in theswimming class. I found that this story suit the teenager because it give a clear message about bully. The author writing focuses on the choices that young peoplemake as they move from childhood to adulthood. The character tackle problems suchas discrimination, lack of self-esteem and the need for self-understanding. At theend, the girl manages to stop the bullying. She is so brave to fight and stand for theright. I learn that we should not fight back the way our enemy fights against usbecause what goes around, always come back around. The best will never remainthe best, and the worst will never remain the worst. Life is difficult and we have toface all the difficulties to be success and it is okay to fall down but gather up thestrength and rise again.

Justification:

I chose this short story because the title attracted me. My middle name is June andthe character in the story is about the girl named June. In the story, there are twopeople with the same name as me. But, the character of each of them is different,where by the first character June, is the lovely one and the second one is the devil of all. This makes the story more alive.

Piano

Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me;

 Taking me back down the vista of years, till I seeA child sitting under the piano, in the boon of the tingling stringsAnd pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as shesings.

In spite of myself, the insidious mastery of songBetrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belongTo the old Sunday evenings at home, with winter outsideAnd hymns in the cozy parlour, the tinkling piano our guide.

So now it is vain for the singer to burst into clamour

With the great black piano appassionato. The glamourOf childish days is upon me, my manhood is castDown in the flood of remembrance, I weep like a child for the past.
