This year’s festival celebrates its 22ndanniversary with three fun packed weeksof events and activities for children all overthe borough. Kicking off with MeadowMadness on Saturday 14 May, Reading’sChildren’s Festival promises to bring plentyof fun, mayhem and madness.

From sport and circus workshops to fundays with art and craft sessions, take yourpick from the many exciting events takingplace at venues across Reading.

MEADOW MADNESS RETURNS FOR THE EIGHTHYEAR RUNNING AS THE LAUNCH EVENT TOREADING CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL 2011. This fantastic riverside setting is the perfect venuefor kids to have fun in. It has the added value of aplay area and loads of green space to run around in.Attractions on the daywill include children’sentertainment andworkshops, charity andinformation stalls,tombolas, refreshments,face painting, arts andcrafts, balloon modellingand that’s not all.

This year’s event has a Royal Theme in celebration ofthe recent Royal Wedding. Why not join in themany regal games and activities and try to spot ourspecial Royal visitors on the day.

Join in the fun at the ‘Larger than Life’ Circusworkshop running throughout the day. Try yourhand at juggling, uni-cycling, hand-held stilts,diabolos, spinning plates and even walking thetight-wire. Also stick around to see John Caudreyperform his very own juggling show at 2pm in thearena.

You won’t want to miss the Hairy Chairs, two GIANTwalking armchairs complete with fluffy slippers andcarrying two very special friends! Why not findthem wandering the Meadow on the day and find

The Readipoppagoda will also feature live setsfrom local young bands, singers and DJs.

Reading YMCAwill be providinga wide range of soft playequipment, there will also be abiscuit icing activity as well as abric-a-brac stall.

The team from Citrus Studiowillbe there to help you getcreative with an exciting art and

photography workshop where you can get creativewith glitter, sequins, paint and much more.

Prepare to be amazed as Beatroots Bateria performtwo very special sets in the arena on the day at11.45am and 1pm. Beatroots Bateria is Reading’scommunity drumming group. Beatroots playsenergetic carnival style samba mixing African, Asianand Latin-American rhythms influenced by theBahian rhythms of Salvador Brazil. Beatroots Bateriais one of the UK's longest established communitysamba groups and has performed at major eventsand festivals including WOMAD, The Thames Festivaland Live Earth at Wembley.

The MAD Academywillrun four free 15 minutetaster sessions for kidscombining music anddance with carefullystructured learning.Sessions will run at12.15pm (walkers to 5 years), 1.15pm (Babies), 2.15pm(Walkers – 3 years) and 3.15pm (walkers to 5 years).Sessions can be booked on the day or in advance on0118 977 0050.

Take part in fun and games at The Dingley Familyand Play Therapy Group tent. There will be a rangeof royal arts and crafts for you to take part in.

Look out for ABC to read,whose special Children’sFestival storyteller will entertain all ages throughoutthe day.

Be entertained by Cloudgliderwho will beperforming in the arena at 2.30pm and 3.40pm.They will perform a whole host of favourite songs toentertain the whole family!

Pop into the art marquee and paint your ownspecial Children’s Festival sun-catcher or lanternwith Gladys Glass.

Reading Music Centre (the Berkshire Maestros) willbe performing at 12.45pm, 1.30pm and 1.45pm in thearena.

THE BIG LUNCHThe third annual Big Lunch will take placeon Sunday 5th June 2011. Led by the EdenProject, The Big Lunch is an initiative tocelebrate neighbourliness across the UK byencouraging communities to cometogether for lunch once a year.

Reading communities are being urged topack a picnic, head to their nearest greenspace and make friends with each other.

Instead of street parties which areexpensive to manage, Reading people arebeing encouraged to go to a nearby park oropen space, eat together, play together,dance together and get to know oneanother.

READING Reading’s Play Scrapstore is a local resourceoffering arts and crafts and educationalresources for use by local community groupsworking with children and adults. The scraphas been collected from local business wastematerial.

The materials we collect range from reusableoff-cuts, over-runs, rejected materials andproduction process by-products to unwantedfinished goods of all sorts.

The scrapstore is open every Tuesday from11am – 1pm and Thursdays 2pm – 5pm and atother times by appointment. For more detailsor to arrange a visit, please call 0118 937 2636.
