The Mary Rose

King Henry VIII had the ship Mary Rose built in the years 1509-11 and was very

proud of it. It was renewed in 1536. In 1544 England started a war against France,

and in 1545 the French sent their ships across the channel towards England. Some

English ships went out of Portsmouth to meet them. One of them was the Mary Rose.

It was carrying 91 guns and 700 men – twice as many as normal. It sank quickly to

the bottom of the sea, because it was overloaded and the weather was very bad.

About 650 men died. King Henry VIII saw tjis terrible accident, while he was standing

in the South Sea Castle.

They wanted to raise the ship, but they couldn't for the next 437 years. In the 1970s

they made new plans to raise it. Divers first found a gun and later brought thousands

of objects from the ship as shoes, bones, bows, arrows, guns, bowls, jugs, sun dials,

even bread and the Bible.

Finally, in 1982 they made a special cradle and on October 1, 1982 they lifted the

ship out of the sea. Even TV was there to report. They reconstructed the ship and

made it a museum in Portsmouth with all the items they found.
