Reading the Scriptures FHE Lesson

LessonbyLaraGoold Materials needed: Scriptures, map of your area (if desired)

Purpose: To teach family members the importance of studying the scriptures

Scripture: “My soul delighteth in the scriptures, and my heart pondereth them, and writeth them for the learning and the profit of my children.” 2 Nephi 4:15

Opening song(s) and prayer: “Search, Ponder, and Pray,” Children’s Songbook, page 109 “Scripture Power,” (enclosed)

Lesson: Ask—What would you do if we were lost in an unfamiliar place and didn’t know how to get home? Where could you find directions? Show Map—Mark your home on the map (just pick a random place if you’re using the map included) Find another location on the map and tell them that that’s where you are lost and need to find your way home again. Have a child crudely trace the streets to get back home again Discuss—We could find our way home by looking at a map or GPS. We would have to find out exactly where we were, then we could follow the map and find our way home again. Relate—While you live on the earth, Heavenly Father has given you divine directions—the scriptures—to guide you back to your heavenly home. Like a road map, they will help you find your way as you read and study them. (SHOW SCRIPTURES) Explain—that Heavenly Father gave us these books of instructions for these special reasons. #1—The scriptures show that Heavenly Father loves his children. (SHOW PICTURE #1) #2—The scriptures tell us about Jesus (SHOW PICTURE #2) #3—The scriptures can help us (USE “SCRIPTURE STUDY SAM” TO ILLUSTRATE HOW THE SCRIPTURES

CAN HELP US WHEN WE HAVE A QUESTION OR PROBLEM) Show Picture of President Monson—Ask if they know who he is. Remind them that he is a prophet of God and receives revelations for us in the latter-days and that he teaches us what Jesus want us to know. Read his quote about the benefits of reading the scriptures. Discuss—with your family how the scriptures have affected your life and if you are not already doing so make a plan for how your family can make scripture reading a part of your daily habits. Bear your testimony of how the scriptures have blessed your life.


Enrichment: Based on the ages and attention spans of your children, choose one or more of the following enrichment activities to enhance the message of the lesson. Enrichment activities do not necessarily need to be completed on the same night as the lesson. We often use them as reinforcement/reminders during the week. Scripture Charades: (for older kids) Using the scripture story grab bag cards, have one player pick a card and act out the scripture story they are acting out. For enrichment you can review the stories in the scriptures afterward, or you can ask them to guess which of that standard works the story can be found in.

Scripture Reading Charts: Using one of the charts included or make your own, start keeping track of where you are in your scripture reading. Scripture Story: Read 2 Kings 22-23 about Josiah and discuss about how much he believed in the scriptures and how he patterned his life on what was taught.

Scripture Cookies To find each ingredient, look up the scripture references and fill in the blanks. Some clues are subtle, so check list of ingredients at the end before making cookies.

Ingredients:

¾ cup “the words of his mouth were smoother than____________” (Psalms 55:21) 1/3 cup “Come unto me all ye ends of the earth, buy__________& honey” (2 Nephi 26:25) 1 ½ cups “To what purpose cometh there to me…the _______ ________ from a far country?” (Jeremiah 6:20) 2 “As one gathereth____________that are left, have I gathered all the earth” (Isaiah 10:14) 2 cups “And Solomon’s provision for one day was thirty measures of fine______” (1 Kings 4:22) 1 teaspoon “Take thou also unto thee principal spices…and of sweet _______half so much” (Exodus 30:23) 1 teaspoon “Ye are the __________of the earth.” (Matthew 5:13) ½ teaspoon “The kingdom of heaven is like unto ____________” (Matthew 13:33) 3 cups “Nevertheless…._____________ for the horse.” (Doctrine and Covenants 89:17) 1 cup “And they gave him….two clusters of ____________” (Samuel 30:12)

Beat first four ingredients together. Then mix in remaining ingredients. Drop by spoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet and bake for 7-10 minutes at 350 degrees, but not before reading “History of Joseph Smith 1:37 and D & C 133:11) (Ingredients: ¾ cup butter, 1/3 cup milk, 1 ½ cups sugar (sweet cane), 2 eggs, 2 cups flour, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1 tsp. salt, ½ tsp. baking soda (leaven), 3 cups oats, 1 cup raisins)


Road Maps help us find the places that we’re looking for. Mark your “home” on here and then pick another location where you are “lost”. The children will trace the streets to find the way “home” again.

Scripture Study Sam—Carefully cut out the four pieces along the heavy black lines, and also the windows above Sam’s shoulder. Fold along the dotted line, then glue or tape the outside edge behind Sam, forming a flattened tube. Glue or tape end to end the long strips containing the situations and the scripture references. Slip this strip inside the tube. A difficult situation will appear in the window above Sam’s shoulder, and a helpful scripture reference will appear in the scripture window. Be sure to look up the references to see how the scriptures can help Sam resolve the difficult situations he faces.


“Study diligently. ‘Every {person} should participate in daily scripture study. Crash courses are not nearly so effective as the day-to-day reading and application of the scriptures in our lives. Become acquainted with the lessons the scriptures teach. Learn the background and setting of the Master's parables and the prophets' admonitions. Study them as though they were speaking to you, for such is the truth.’

Recalling Nephi's interpretation of the vision of the tree of life, that the rod of iron represented the word of God, President Monson said, ‘I promise you… that if you will study the scriptures diligently, your power to avoid temptation and to receive the direction of the Holy Ghost in all you do will be increased.’" ~President Thomas S. Scripture Charades (for older kids)—cut out the cards and place in a basket. Take turns drawing a card, then acting out the listed scripture story without using words. Set a time limit of 2 minutes and if people still haven’t guessed correctly, have the person start giving verbal hints until it is guessed. (It’s from the Old Testament. It has to do with fire.)
