CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE, WASHINGTON, D.C. April 14, 2019 Readings for April 14 hen the hour came . . . (Luke 22:14) One of the best ways to read the story of Jesus’ passion is to put ourselves in his shoes. First, Jesus watched one of his own apostles betray him with a kiss. Have you ever had someone smile at you on the surface but then do something to intentionally hurt you? If so, you have had a taste of the passion. Have you ever had your best friends abandon you in a dark time? If so, you have had a taste of the passion. If you ever had people make up lies and false accusations about you in an effort to destroy your reputation, then you have had a taste of the passion. If you have ever been the brunt of terrible jokes and pranks that hurt, then you have had a taste of the passion. Was any of this fun? No. Did it hurt you deeply? Probably. Did you get angry, feel humiliated, harbor resentment? Likely. Did you want to get even? Maybe. At the passion, if Jesus fell prey to one split second of resentment or one moment of anger, he would not have been able to save us. Everything would have been lost. But he didn’t. Throughout this ordeal, as unjust as it was, Jesus acted like a lamb led to slaughter. He didn’t defend himself. He didn’t fight back. Instead, all Jesus did was say, “Father, forgive them” (Luke 23:34). All of us will face false accusation or abuse or betrayal at some point in our lives. It’s likely that most of us already have. As we hear the passion today, let’s resolve to be as merciful as we can to everyone who has hurt us, ridiculed us, betrayed us, or tarnished our reputations. Let’s also agree never again to undermine someone or hurt someone. Reflecting on Jesus’ passion naturally creates a moment of sorrow in us. It saddens us to see Jesus suffer and be mistreated so much. But it can also help us. We can look at the cross and ask God to help us be more forgiving—just as Jesus was. “Lord, help me to be like you.” Taken from The Word Among Us, Lent 2019 Vol. 38, Number 4: Used with permission. hen the hour came . . . (Luke 22:14) One of the best ways to read the story of Jesus’ passion is to put ourselves in his shoes. First, Jesus watched one of his

own apostles betray him with a kiss.

PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION

Holy Week

We invite you to join us at our Holy Week liturgies and services. Find the schedule in today’s bulletin, or in the brochures in the pew racks, in baskets at the Cathedral doors or at www.stmatthewscathedral.org. Penn Parking Garage next to the Cathedral offers extended hours for the Palm Sunday Concert, Chrism Mass, Tenebræ and the Easter Vigil.

Chrism Mass – The Chrism Mass for the Archdiocese of Washington will be celebrated at the Cathedral on Monday, April 15 at 7pm. Cardinal Wuerl will celebrate this special Mass during which priests of the Archdiocese renew their ordination promises and the sacramental oils for the year are blessed. The Cathedral will close after the 12:10pm Mass and reopen at 6pm. Come and pray for our priests! Holy Week Confessions – The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available at our Lenten Communal Penance Service, Come Home for Easter on Tuesday of Holy Week, April 16, and as follows: 11am to Noon (multiple confessors):

Monday and Wednesday of Holy Week, April 15 & 17 Holy Thursday, April 18 Good Friday, April 19 Holy Saturday, April 20 (no Confessions at regular Saturday time of 4 to 5pm).

6 to 7:15pm (multiple confessors) on Wednesday of Holy Week, April 17 (Confessions before 7:30pm Tenebræ). Good Friday Collection – Please help support our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land by giving to the special Good Friday Collection. This Pontifical Collection allows the Franciscans and others to continue caring for Christianity’s holiest sites and for God’s people in the Holy Land. Please be generous!

Tenebrae – Enter more deeply into the Mystery of Christ’s Passion,

Death and Resurrection! – Please join us Wednesday of Holy Week, April 17 at 7:30pm for Tenebræ. The Schola Cantorum will lead the assembly in the singing of psalms and canticles and chant the traditional Lamentations of Jeremiah. Following each psalm, choral responsories will be sung by the Schola, including Vinea Me Electa (My Chosen Vine) by Francis Poulenc, Ne Irascaris (Do not be angry) by William Byrd, Christus Factus Est (Christ became [obedient]) by Anton Bruckner, and an evocative chant-based composition by Paul Nicholson, Velum Templi (The Veil of the Temple.) Two other motets by Felice Anerio and Russell Woollen also interpret the Christus Factus Est text. Our Cathedral Lectors will proclaim two readings from the Letter to the Hebrews followed by an ancient homily by 4th century bishop, St. Epiphanius of Cyprus. While the 15 candles of the hearse (candelabra) are gradually extin-guished, the Strepitus is sounded in the total darkness created when the Paschal candle is taken from the sanctuary, recalling Christ’s death. The entire liturgy is sung without accompaniment, indicating the sober and solemn character of the liturgical period that we will enter over the next three days. Come to experience this unique and rarely celebrated ancient rite.

Social Justice

Thank you to the Knights of Columbus, Hispanic Ministry, RCIA Catechumens, Cathedral Young Adults, and Parish Council for preparing and serving the meals. Questions on the beneficiary organizations? Contact Mary Budarz at [email protected]. Rice Bowl Collection of Donations – Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl donations may be turned in at the rectory office or in the sacristy on the weekends of April 21 or 28 or on a weekday. Please do not leave donations unattended in the Cathedral. Questions? Contact Norma Canedo at [email protected]. Creation Care Team – Global Unity – “A global consensus is essential for confronting the deeper problems, . . . Such a consensus could lead, for example, to planning a sustainable and diversified agriculture, developing renewable and less polluting forms of energy, encouraging a more efficient use of energy, promoting a better management of marine and forest resources, and ensuring universal access to drinking water.” (Pope Francis: Laudato Si’, no. 164) To be part of our Creation Care Team, or for more information on how to better care for the environment, contact Phil Downey Jr. at [email protected].

Faith Formation

Dr. Robert Wicks gave a great Lenten lecture on strengthening our inner lives.

Saturday Bible Study – Our Bible Study series continues this spring with a look at the Book of the Prophet Isaiah on the following Saturdays: May 4 - Isaiah 1; May 11 - Isaiah 2; and May 18 - Isaiah 3. Save the dates for our meetings at 10:30am in the East Conference Room. Calling All C. S. Lewis Fans! – Join our Cathedral Book Club discussion Monday evening, May 13 in the West Conference Room at 6:45pm to discuss “Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold,” edited by the renowned C. S. Lewis (and highly recommended by Fr. Conrad!). Lewis considered it his best as he reworked the classical myth of Cupid and Psyche into a remarkable piece of contemporary fiction, a classical presentation of the struggle between sacred and profane love described as “the most significant and triumphant work that Lewis has produced.” Are You Thinking of Returning? Do You Think of Yourself as an Inactive Catholic? Welcome! – If you are a Catholic who has been away, or “used to be Catholic,” we

invite you to be an active part of us again. Landings

offers “a safe place to land,” a place for listening and being heard, and for asking questions and reconnecting with your faith. Contact Theresa Prymuszewski (contact info at right).

New Parishioner Registration ~ Welcome! If you attend Mass at the Cathedral, we invite you to register as a parishioner so we can welcome you properly, learn about any special needs and interests, and keep you informed of our worship opportunities and activities. We invite you to consider becoming involved in our various organizations, committees and other aspects of parish life. Register by clicking here or visiting the parish website (www.stmatthewscathedral.org) and clicking the Join Us tab (choose Register as a Parishioner). You also may register at the rectory office.

Celebrating the Sacraments For our Mass and Confessions schedule, see the bulletin front cover or click here.

Baptism Parents who wish to have their child baptized at the Cathedral should contact the Baptismal Coordinator at [email protected]. Parents should contact us at least six (6) months in advance of a desired baptismal date, and may ask for the priest or deacon of their choice to perform the Baptism. Early contact allows parents to be scheduled for the necessary sacramental formation session and godparents to obtain letters from their pastor. For more information, click here or go to the Sacraments tab on the parish website front page (choose Baptism).

If you are a registered parishioner at St. Matthew’s and need a letter of good standing in order to be a godparent for a baptism to be celebrated at another parish, please call the rectory office at 202-347-3215 to ask about obtaining a letter.

Marriage Couples who are interested in celebrating the Sacrament of Marriage at the Cathedral are encouraged to click here or go to the Sacraments tab on the parish website front page (choose Marriage, then choose Weddings) to review our guidelines for weddings. The next step is to call the rectory office at 202-347-3215 and ask for the priest of your choice or the priest on duty, who can speak to you about marriage preparation and the possibility of scheduling your wedding at the Cathedral. Couples are expected to contact us at least nine (9) months in advance of the date on which they hope to celebrate their wedding.

First Reconciliation and First Eucharist Sunday Children’s Faith Formation classes include preparation for the reception of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. For more information on classes, click here or go to the Faith Formation tab on the parish website front page (choose Children’s Sacramental Preparation/Religious Education). Registration packets for classes beginning in the fall of 2019 will be available shortly online and at the rectory office.

Confirmation Each spring during the Easter season, St. Matthew’s offers adult Confirmation preparation for active, baptized Catholics who already have received their First Eucharist. For more information, click here or go to the Sacraments tab on the parish website front page (choose Confirmation). Registration forms for our 2020 Confirmation group will be available shortly online and at the rectory office.

Rite of Christian Initiation Are you an unbaptized adult who would like to become Catholic, an adult baptized in another Christian denomination who wishes to profess your faith as a Catholic Christian, or a baptized adult Catholic who would like to complete your initiation in the Catholic Church? We invite you to inquire about the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. RCIA is an ongoing process of conversion and faith formation for adults who would like to explore our Catholic faith and prepare for the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation—Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. For more information, click here or go to the Faith Formation tab on the parish website front page (choose Adult Initiation Process (RCIA)).

Contact Theresa Prymuszewski, Pastoral Associate for Faith Formation, at 202-587-5139 or [email protected] for more information.

Looking for a convenient way to support our parish offertory?

Faith Direct is the innovative solution that allows you to support our parish using electronic funds transfer from either a credit card or bank account. It is a hassle-free, simple solution for today’s busy families. Sign up using the enrollment form on the other side or go online to www.faithdirect.net and use our parish code DC284 to enroll today!

How does Faith Direct work?

Faith Direct is a secure system that works directly with your bank or credit card–much the same as other direct payments you may have set up for utility bills or mortgage payments.

When do transactions take place? Transactions take place once per month on the 4th or the next business day. The total amount of your gifts for that current month (both offertory & second/special collections) will be debited in one monthly total. The Cathedral will receive the funds 4 business days later.

Can I stop, increase, or decrease my payment at any time? Yes, by calling Faith Direct at 1-866-507-8757 (toll free) by emailing [email protected], or by logging in to your account through www.faithdirect.net.

How does the Cathedral benefit from my participation with Faith Direct?

The Cathedral will see a substantial increase in net revenue, a decrease in administrative costs, and a clearer picture of cash flow for their needs.

If you have any questions about the Faith Direct program, please call 1-866-507-8757 {toll free} or send an email to [email protected],

or contact Pam Erwin at the Rectory at 202-347-3215 x537 or [email protected].

PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION

Vol 38, Numero 4; Cuaresma 2019
