We hope and pray that many of those whom we've known and loved may be among them. (The original meaning of "Hallow-e'en" was eve of All Hallows/Saints, though it has since been secularised, and in some instances occultised) On November 2, we celebrate All Souls, all the faithful departed who are saved but yet to enter into the Lord's glory and behold him face to face. They depend on us for our prayers, and so the annual practice of having Masses offered for the Faithful Departed has become a noble tradition. Mass envelopes are available at the back of our parish churches for those who would like to have Masses offered for certain individuals or for "all the Holy Souls". Alternatively, a plain envelope can be used to include an offering, with the intention written on it. Mass requests can be brought to the parish office, or left in the weekend collections, and our parish secretary, Shirley Sadler, will arrange with the Oratory Fathers for them to be said. in Christ, Fr Scot Anthony Armstrong Can you give a hand? Our St Vincent de Paul Conference is struggling to handle the 15 or more calls for assistance that we receive per week. Too many members have become elderly and infirm so that we may have to reduce the frequency of services (presently five days per week), unless we can attract new members. It only takes a couple of hours on one day per week, and we have transport available if you don’t happen to drive. Women are just as welcome as men in our organisation. The gratitude of our clients touches our hearts. Best of all, we know that what we do helps our clients to get their lives back on track. If you’d like to know more about us, please call Janet Murray on 0412 634 314 or Ian Campbell on 0411179 743.

Reflection

Poverty and tribulations are given us by God as trials of our fidelity and virtue as well as to enrich us with more real and lasting riches in heaven St Philip Neri

The capital sins and their opposite virtues Gluttony and Temperance - An excessive desire for food distorts a natural human need leading to the sin of gluttony wherein food becomes an end in itself A lack of self-control in eating and drinking leads to voraciousness in everything else since one seeks to satiate the hunger and thirst of the soul by overindulging the body We cannot possibly look away from the gratification of foodunless the mind is fixed on the delight of things celestial (St John Cassian) We achieve the virtue of temperance through fasting [The] gentle and loving Lord looks for fasting and abstinence that we may be detached from things of this life

and devote our spare time to spiritual matters (St John Chrysostom) Fasting is linked to almsgiving [H]aving reckoned up the price of the dishes of that day give it to some person in want and you will exhibit humility of mind (Hermas The Shepherd) Almsgiving is an imitation of God Himself

MASS READINGS

First Reading Jeremiah 317-9

The Lord says this Shout with joy for Jacob Hail the chief of nations Proclaim Praise Shout The Lord has saved his people the remnant of Israel See I will bring them back from the land of the North and gather them from the far ends of earth all of them the blind and the lame women with child women in labour a great company returning here They had left in tears I will comfort them as I lead them back I will guide them to streams of water by a smooth path where they will not stumble

For I am a father to Israel and Ephraim is my first-born son

The Word of the Lord

Response Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm 125 (Said by all)

When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage it seemed like a dream Then was our mouth filled with laughter on our lips there were songs

The heathens themselves said What marvels the Lord worked for them What marvels the Lord worked for us Indeed we were glad

Deliver us O Lord from our bondage as streams in dry land Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap

They go out they go out full of tears carrying seed for the sowing they come back they come back full of song carrying their sheaves

Second Reading Hebrews 51-6

Every high priest has been taken out of mankind and is appointed to act for men in their relations with God to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins and so he can sympathise with those who are ignorant or uncertain because he too lives in the limitations of weakness That is why he has to make sin offerings for himself as well as his people No one takes this honour on himself but each one is called by God as Aaron was Nor did Christ give himself the glory of becoming high priest but he had it from the one who said to him You are my son today I have become your father and in another text You are a priest of the order of Melchizedek and for ever

The Word of the Lord

Response Thanks be to God

his gospel Alleluia

Gospel Mark 1046-52

They reached Jericho and as he left Jericho with his disciples and a large crowd Bartimaeus (that is the son of Timaeus) a blind beggar was sitting at the side of the road When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth he began to shout and to say `Son of David Jesus have pity on me And many of them scolded him and told him to keep quiet but he only shouted all the louder `Son of David have pity on me Jesus stopped and said `Call him here So they called the blind man `Courage they said `get up he is calling you So throwing off his cloak he jumped up and went to Jesus

Then Jesus spoke `What do you want me to do for you `Rabbuni the blind man said to him `Master let me see again Jesus said to him `Go your faith has saved you And immediately his sight returned and he followed him along the road
